If i use them when buying something I feel like a cheapskate and it would just be embarassing using all my coppers to buy something.
And i know asda have those machines that exchange it - what do they exchange the coppers to - 10ps?

You've got two options, really:
1. Take them to a bank and pay them into your bank account, if you have the time/inclination to count them into the required bags:
2. Use one of the Coinstar or similar machines that you'll find in many supermarkets. These usually then give you a voucher that you can use against purchases in store, but as you mention they'll deduct a fairly sizeable commission. 7.5% is fairly standard, AFAIK.
