Welcome to the British Army hub on The Student Room

Being an Army officer is about leading from the front, living a life of adventure, and overcoming challenges. There are over 30 different Army officer roles in which you can do this. You could choose a full-time career, or you can join us part-time in the Army Reserve, where you can reach 100% of your potential in just 10% of your time. One thing is certain, whichever way you choose to serve, you’ll experience a life of challenge, excitement, adventure and achievement.

    What will my career entail?

Start building your career as an Officer Cadet and we’ll give you all the scope and support you need to achieve more. At the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) you’ll be supported, encouraged and developed to be a leader. Whether it’s commanding a platoon of soldiers, leading a humanitarian mission or helping to build critical infrastructure and rebuild lives after a natural disaster, you’ll lead a life that’s far from routine.

    Under 18?

While you need to be 18 to begin your officer training, there are still many ways you can prepare for your Army career and start leading a life of challenge now. The following options give you an exceptional head start, and in some cases, a financial advantage too:

    • If you're in Year 10, or just starting Year 11, you could apply to study A-levels at Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College. Joining us here could be your first step towards becoming an engineering or technical officer in the Army.
    • If you’re about to go into Year 12, and you have your GCSE or equivalent results, the Army Officer Scholarship Scheme could be for you. It provides financial support for future officers while they study for A-Levels, Scottish Highers or equivalent qualifications.
    • If you’ve just started or are about to start your final year at school, and you’re planning on going to university, you could join us on a Gap Year like no other. Our Gap Year Commission (GYC) will equip you with leadership qualities – and you’ll be paid around £18,000 to train with us.

To help you further, we have set up an exam hotline to help you get ahead of the game, and you can speak to one of our careers advisors about the right Army role for you. Call our hotline on 03067704777.
