Birmingham City University gained University status in 1992, although its history dates back to 1843, through a series of predecessor institutions. These days, the University has around 22,500 students from 80 countries, making it one of the largest and liveliest institutions in the West Midlands region.

In addition to its strength in the creative arts, the University offers a wide selection of qualifications in subjects such as health, education, media and technology. The University is very career-focused, having almost 40 professional accreditations and a large number of successful industry partnerships; within six months of leaving, 9 in 10 of their undergraduate and postgraduate students are in employment or further study (DLHE survey 2012/13).
