I wouldn't have to give a paper for Visual Arts, just have the final exhibition.
My other subjects are: HL: English, Economics, Business
SL: Environmental Societies, Hindi, and Math Studies.
I'm going into Communications and fashion design, which is why Visual Arts may come in handy (my Visual Arts theme is fashion-related), along with the portfolio I am completing on my forecasts for fashion season spring-summer 2014.

Speaking as a current English HL student, your English really isn't as bad as you think it is, I personally feel that you'll manage English SL quite well, if you have a good teacher. English SL isn't very difficult, they study fewer books than HL students, and their commentary can be on a piece of prose too, unlike in HL, where you are limited to poetry.

I can't speak for Chemistry, as I do not take it myself, but I think that you can wait for your Chem GCSE score and decide according.

This rule is in place for two reasons: ease of photocopying (some ink removers can ruin the scan) and because a lot of students forget/ can't properly write over the erased part - in which case it would be better just to cross out the work.
So I think you'll be fine for this. Your exams officer should have made the rules more clear, but there's nothing that can be done about it now.

Oh... so those were the reasons. Based on the reasons, I guess there will be no trouble scanning papers with white-out. Phew! Thank you for the reply.
Erm, I have few questions about IB MYP.
I recently moved to an international school in hong kong. Since this is my first international school and i have never taken any kind of international curriculum before, it is just... too hard for me.
So my problem is, I keep getting bad grades from ALL of my subjects, especially English. I got 4 out of 7 in english last term and I am about to take English exam at the end of this month.
So, can you please give me any advise so I can improve in English and other subjects??
Thank you!

As was said above, the quality of your essay matters a lot more than the originality. There's a lot to say about weather in The Stranger, so I think you could do a good essay on that. If that's what you want to do and you can do a good job on it, I think you should go for it. Better for you to have a very strong essay that's been done a thousand times than a unique essay that's not well-supported.

Sorry, I know this is a week on but if you retake in November then you'll have to reapply to Uni and go the next accademic year. I've been contemplating the same thing but don't decide on anything until you get your results. The Uni might still take you with a couple of points down anyway (Most of the people I know who got into Uni didn't actually get their offers, that applies to both A Levels and IB)! On top of that us IBers get first dibs on clearing places, which might have one of the offers you declined on it (This is what happened to my cousin).

Good Luck :)

I'm still deciding whether to do IB or A-Levels and people have given me different opinions. Most people are shocked that I want to do IB. Do universities generally prefer IB students? :)

In all honesty, I would recommend and encourage you to sit for the A-Levels instead of the IB and I'll tell you why.

I've sat done IB & have many friends who've done A-levels too. Essentially, The IB does mould you into a person with a global perspective and guide you into utilising a broad and rightly balanced approach to the many matters of life. However, the path of acquiring such a skill-set is filled with vicious hinderances. In IB, you will have to do 6 subjects and complete 3 main components (TOK (Basically critical thinking), CAS (Extra Circ.), and Extended Essay (Consider this as your graduation dissertation)). Each subject will require you to do internal assessments (essays, projects, presentations etc...) and sit for external assessments (tests). Eventually your performance is graded on a scale of 42 points (with a max. of 7 in each subject) and 3 bonus points related to the 3 main components (CAS, TOK, EE). In contrast, the situation is a bit simpler with A-levels where the hassle of internal assessments and 3000 word essays isn't a necessity. Instead, you'll have to sit for the A-level exams. Hence, the first reason would be less hassle and headache.

The second reason I recommend A-levels is that IB is currently underrated. And as some of the members who replied before me, universities tend to be unfair with entry requirements as an AAA DOESN'T equate to 38 points... It would definitely equate to a 30-32 points. Therefore, A-level students tend to get into their choice colleges and universities with less effort than IB students who have to work extremely hard to pull a 38 (WHICH IS NOT EASY <--- THIS IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT).

Therefore, with A-levels you'd have an easier way around to both the university and major of your choice and still have some extra time to practice or develop the skill of thinking openly and critically which is indirectly gained through the IB program.

So choose carefully and weigh the pros and cons of both programs. Either ways, I wish you nothing but the best of luck.

Hey..

Firstly, your subject choices are fine! You do comply with the pre requisites of any Med School in the UK (Or others, around the world, except for India as you do not have HL: Physics, Chem and Bio)... Coming to the part of application, any Med School in the UK would require minium 38-45 points, some have a requirement of 7,7,7 or 7,7,6 in HL subjects, honestly, do extremely well in Chemistry because it is widely used in Medicine. Also, your IGCSE scores are supposedly fine, do not worry too much about IGCSE Biology however if you show drastic improvement in IB then of course the world is in your hands. Make sure you perform very well in your HL subjects and also SL. Also, don't forget to have strong extra curricular activities, you could also volunteer at a hospital.

I'm an IB Alumni, currently doing Medicine and getting in to any Med School with IB is kinda difficult because they set extremely high boundaries for us while it's quite simpler for applicants who did A Levels.

Hope that was enough, do let me know if you need to know anything else.

Hi saychig!
Firstly, thank you very much for replying to my post.
The information you provided was very useful and make me feel less worried about my IGCSE's. I'll try to focus on my studies right now but the HL subjects are pretty difficult :S. Kind of regretting taking IB right now hahaha.
Are you enjoying med school so far? How is the life of a med student?
Thanks again! :)

As an IB student that has just been accepted into med school, you are mainly correct but for the OP sake, feel the need to point out how many IB points you need.

You can get into at least one or two med schools* with 36 overall IB points.
You can get into a significant number of med schools* with 37 overall IB points.
You can get into the vast majority of med schools* with 38 overall IB points.
Oxford & Cambridge are more competitive and you may well want to look at 40+ points for them - but by no means is 40 points necessary :)
And the more IB points allows you to stand out from the crowd but you can stand out other ways - as long as you meet those minimum entry requirements.
Obviously the above still requires UKCAT / BMAT / Personal Statement / Reference / Work Experience / Interviews etc...

It's good to do well in your highers but I have spoken to several med school students who have said Chemistry really is not used that much in med school.

Thank you for the update Lionheartat20! I have been searching entry requirements of different universities as well and it's exactly what you said. The information really helped! :)

Giancoli is possibly better with respect to scientific content, but it also includes many portions that lie out of the scope of the IB programme. Tsokos is decent enough if you will be using it for the IB. I find its explanations very simple and the supplementary material in the orange boxes can be very useful, too. So, I agree with the above posts. Tsokos would be the best choice at this stage.

I'm currently in Year 11 and I made my IB choices in December.

I'm taking;

HL - Economics, Information Technology and Chemistry (in the process of switching)

SL - English Lit, Maths and German Lang B.

I was wondering if ITGS was a respected subject, as I wish to study Economics, Financial Law and/or Information Systems at university. I've been told by my teachers that it's quite a good course, and it interests me. Furthermore, the universities I wish to apply to have no restriction or "soft subjects".

Thank you!! :)

I'm in a complete and utter state right now as I'm in my first year of IB at the moment and I've been doing standard level French since the start. We've nearly finished the year and my teacher had his learning conversations with us and he told me I will fail. I listen to french radio read french articles play French games I've recently (today) got a tutor but what else can I do can anyone recommend text books or anything I can do. I'm in desperate need for 38 points and French is dragging down my average. It was probably the most painful conversation I've ever had and its way to late for me to start a new language so I'm stuck.

Honestly, your teacher is an *******. I think you're doing about as much as you can, and doing past papers would be the ideal option.

However, since this is your first year of IB you really should consider asking about ab initio. If youre doing French SL right now, then you should definitely be able to cope with ab intio with no further preparation, and just by doing some past papers since it should be a lot easier. Even if your school doesnt offer it, you can still do it if you and your tutor follow the syllabus together (that should be enough) and if you manage to get the exam, but that you should confirm with your teacher. A friend of mine is taking a Czech IB and our school doesnt offer it either :)

Here at Oxford our standard offer for IB students...

Here at Oxford our standard offer for IB students is: 39 points, including core points, and including Maths to higher level (score 7.) As I'm sure you're aware, computing is a very mathematical subject. Especially the way we teach it here at Oxford. Our courses start from first principles, so we're not looking for any specific knowledge in computing (although we are looking for a genuine interest in the subject.) We are very much looking for students with a proven flair for maths. So, no I'm afraid that Maths to SL isn't going to be enough for us. You would need the HL Maths (score 7) to meet the standard conditional offer.

I hope that's of some help, even if it's not the news you were hoping for.

Hi there I'm a current student at DGS and have been for 7 years. I'm sitting my final exams at the moment :)

The school has been expanding a lot recently for the 6th form, to accommodate A LOT of new students, so you will be one of around 150 external students joining in year 12.

The school has a good reputation for a reason, students are pushed hard but that's what comes with the IB. There's no escaping the work I'm afraid but there's plenty of support, and if you're aspiring to do dentistry you're going to have to put in the hours no matter where you are studying.

I do know a lot of people that have gone on from a-levels to do well, and success in your exams in 6th is going to come down to your own individual work on either course.

If youve got any questions about subjects or the school i'm happy to answer them

Yeah, the big thing is you need to know your books backwards!! I had Macbeth and Heart of Darkness and (as lame as it sounds) my friends and I would could pretty much recite the entire thing! OK, here are my tips:
- Re-read your books a couple of times over with a pencil/pen and highlighter ready to make notes. Author's very rarely put something in a book that doesn't have a purpose, so even if it seems like the smallest insignificant thing, think about why the author has written about it
- You should also practice doing an IOC. Get yourself a cheap microphone and download "audacity" from the web (unless you already have a voice recording system), pick out a section of about 40 lines in the book and time yourself - 10 mins notation, 15 mins recording yourself.
- Don't keep choosing easy extracts either, try and choose extracts that are going to be challenging
- The hardest thing about the IOC is structuring how you're going speak - it's really tempting to just stop the recording, think about what you're going to say next and then start it up again - DON'T. You may as well get used to the feeling of having a total mind block and continuing to speak anyway!
- your structure should be as if you're reading an written commentary, speak as you would write. Also, don't just say that "the author uses a simile at this point", explain why it's there and it's relevance!
- prepare an introduction for each text you have and memorise it - your introduction will barely be affected by which extract you get. Include: where the extract is from (the title) and the author, where abouts in the book it's located, what's happened before and after this point, and why it's significant in the whole context of the book. You can also provide a VERY brief and relevant background of the author. In total the introduction to take you about 2 mins speaking time

Trust me, practice IOCs are the best way to go - I did hundreds of them and I swear my family thought I'd gone mad and started speaking to myself, but on the day I actually ended up getting an extract that I had already practiced at home and it made me relax. Also, see if you can get a mark scheme for the IOC and either get your teacher to mark some (just to see how you're going) or your family/ friends.

Hope this helps!

OMG Im doing Heart of Darkness too! but the book is so hard. Are there any tips specifically for HoD? Its hard to understand it

I didn't start producing good essays until second year though, don't think I knew enough or I wasn't motivated. My IA was a level 7 though and I'm hoping for a 6 or 7 over all as I felt the exam went well. Also did you know that philosophy is one of the only exams not to be timezoned? so if youve got a friend doing it a few hours east of you its theoretically possible to find out the exam questions in advance, luckily they were easy this year I found so there was no need. How did anyone else find it? I especially liked the core picture

I thought that Paper 2 was amazing, I studied Meditations by Descartes and the questions were a dream, whereas Paper 1 was a bit trickier, but I think I managed to babble on enough to get a 6 at least! It would have been nice to get a 7 but oh well... It's funny you should say that you only produced good essays this year, I was the same, I went from getting 5 to 7s... I think you need to have a lot of knowledge to do well in Philosophy. Glad the exam went well for you :D

No problem buddy! Just reply and I'll try to help with whatever I can!

Narrowing the question is the key, because remember you only have 4000 words so it needs to be focused (looking at socio-cultural impacts and only on Somali refugees in Nairobi is a good plan to keep it narrow) - 4000 seems lots but I was able to write about 1600 in my English paper 2 the other day... so that's about 40% of my EE in my allotted time! Just remember to take photos of things you think would class as socio-cultural impacts and annotate the s*** out of them! So for example, If I were to do something similar, but I looked at how polish economic migrants are having a socio-cultural effect on my local town (I live in outer london, so a suburb town), I would take photos of shops, and maybe look at past demographics to see at what rate the migrants are entering the town and what effect they are having! If you can't find any 'official' data to compare, use local school data maybe? I know schools in my area publish their percentages of ethnic minorities to show how multicultural they are - maybe ones in Somali areas of Nairobi do too?

If you want me to explain any of the models, just shout... actually, ill PM you my email if you wish?

Just write a couple of paragraphs for Section A. A general rule of thumb is about a sentence per mark, so aim for 2, maybe 3 paragraphs, but don't take too long on each answer, obviously. Section B should be a full essay, including an introduction and a concluding paragraph. It should probably be 4-5 paragraphs minimum (including introduction and conclusion). I'd suggest that you just write as much as you can until you have about five minutes left then write the concluding paragraph. You do get points for organization, though, so keep that in mind, too.

It's generally accepted here that these are the easiest subjects to get 7 at HL:
Geography, English Lit, Biology and Theatre.
We do have a reputation for doing really well in those subjects though.

The "hardest" HLs at my school (though I won't order them) are:
Math, Physics, History and French/Spanish.

Chemistry, other arts and Economics are in the middle for us, and I can't say for some subjects like Philosophy because they aren't offered at my school.

Good luck to you, I have Paper 1 tomorrow :S eeekk! :D
Organisation is important in the 22 mark question, so just take 10 minutes to plan out the essay before you start writing. Always read the question a few times as you go. :) Hope this helps!! :D

Hey, can any of you guys help me?
It is the most basic thing ever but I just ... I completely forgot.

How do you answer the 8-mark questions and the 22-mark questions?
I know the 22-mark questions, you'd have to talk about 3 studies and include critical thinking but what about 8-mark questions?

For the 8-mark questions you should be concise and to the point. No introduction or any of that. You'll want to include specific examples, but there's no need to discuss the studies in a lot of detail; just talk about the aim, procedure and findings, and make sure to talk about how it relates to the topic.
The 22-mark ones are actual essays, and part of the points are for organization. You'll want to include an introduction, organized body paragraphs and a concluding paragraph. If your last paragraph comes to any sort of conclusion, then it should be consistent with the rest of your essay.
You'll also need to pay attention to the wording of the questions. They expect a different type of answer for a question with "discuss" than for "evaluate" and so on and so forth.
If you have them, a good place to look for advice on the answers is the back of the IB companion book. My school has the ones published by Oxford and the ones published by Pearson, and they're very helpful. If you don't have them, go to pearsonbacconline.com and look through their online resources.

Hello Yujin Lee,

I just handed my course selection sheet in today OMGOMG!!! After so many consults with my teachers, you can always change your HL and SL subjects. The important thing is that you get the right subjects for you, HL or SL is not what you have to be concerned with right now. English is also my second language and i think i'll struggle a lot. Still, i think that it is worth trying at first. Your subject choices depend on what major you want to study. Many of my friends are studying history HL this year and 80% of them did not get high grades this year in MYP. If you really like the subject then go for it!!

Thank you :D

EXACTLY. Do NOT do the IB.
A demon...

EXACTLY. Do NOT do the IB.
A demon qualification. I absolutely hate it. I literally curse the day they tempted me into doing IB, it took me a couple of months in to realise I've made the WORSE mistake of my life.
If your planning on having a a degree in some faraway land then go on and do this degree but about 95% choose to go on to British unis, which also accept A levels, so do not do it.
I hated almost every second of it. Not at one point did I think 'Maaan...I'm glad I did the IB...' - Never.

The worst bit is, that the colleges and sixth forms don't tell you is that the unis don't get IB. So a degree that requires an IB score of say 36 points and A level grades AAB, PICK DAMN A LEVELS!! AAB is so much more easier to get than 36 points.
The unis don't know and frankly don't pissing care how much you're killing yourself to get these grades, so why kill yourself for a worse deal?

A motto we had in our college was 'If you think you did well - you didn't. If you think you didn't do well - you're damn right! In the end, IB will always screw you over.'

Sorry to sound so pessimistic, but the last couple of years in IB has been the worst in my life. I thoroughly look forward to university.

Hi,
So I think I would like to do IB for the next 2 years and I think I can do a subject from each of the categories to suit me apart from science. Science is actually my worst subject at the moment, and at my school we get a choice from biology, chem and physics (all at either HL or SL). I'm particularly bad at chem, I can't dissect things in bio and I don't think I've had enough experience in physics but I want to know what is the easiest or would be the easiest for me and yeah
Thanks :)

Biology is the go-to option for people who suck at science, because they think it's the easiest. I'm not sure if that's true, because I only take bio and have no other experience. But it's worth noting that the % of people getting 7s in biology SL are alot lower than chem and physics, partially I guess because the people taking bio aren't very interested in it.

Dissecting is only relevant for a few IAs, and even then you don't have to include them in your diploma grade. If you have time and memorize alot of things well, do bio. No thinking involved - just rote memorisation.

The RLS is obviously the banning of the burqha/niqab (and all other religious symbols) in public places and secondary school.
That main question is backed up by: To what extent should the government interfere with religion? To what extent will this ban in France increase or decrease racism and hate crimes? And another question to add later on.
I'm not having much trouble thinking about reasons for pro - secularism / opposers of this movement, and my own opinion, its just the AOK/WOK's that I find difficult.

I know History and Ethics will be major Areas of knowledge
And Perception, Emotion and Reason for WOKs. But I'm just struggling to link these into the talk..! Any help would be so appreciated, so thanks!

Hello,

Hello,

May I point you in the direction of the exam criteria? If you have a look, you'll see that 'response to the question' accounts for merely a fifth of your overall mark. In a sense, albeit a very pompous one, your teacher had a point; the way I've been taught to 'answer the question', if you like, is by tailoring it to the quotes and ideas I include. This is a lot easier than it sounds, as I'm sure you have noticed, because the questions per se are extremely vague and open for interpretation. Thankfully, this means that essentially any quote you mention can be bludgeoned into being relevant and, provided you constantly babble on about stylistic features, you'll find yourself getting top marks every time!

The way I chose to revise is by creating three so-called quote sheets for my texts, in which I deliberately included ones with glaringly obvious stylistic features. To give you an example, upon answering the 'timeless' question, I looked at the theme of smoking, one author's inclusion of specific music and literature, and the repeated theme of physical reprimands. If it hadn't been for my purportedly "shallow" analysis of stylistic features, I would've got 25/25. The way I usually deal with them is by conjuring up some platitudes, e.g. "this emphasises the idea of X on the reader", which I've been told isn't the best, so I'll leave that bit to you.

Hope this helped,
Fellow lang/lit student

A levels vs IB

I've done both A levels and IB this year (IB for...

I've done both A levels and IB this year (IB for the first term, A levels for the second term) and tbh I think you could go either way. I think your IB choices are a lot more suited for your course, and the fact that you have maths in there (I recommend doing SL if you're doing two sciences to higher) will be good.

The one thing that worries me about you is the fact that you get extremely stressed easily, like you said - the procrastination bit is fine, every teenager in the world does it :P However I get really really stressed too in general, and the IB didn't help it at all, which led me to change to A levels (as well as the fact I had to self teach philosophy). If you think this is actually a major concern, then I wouldn't really recommend it, it might not be healthy in the long run.

You can go either way really, you can try looking at universities that you like the look of and see the courses. Some places have really high IB grades (AAA is a lot easier than 38 points, for example) so A levels will be better in that respect, but it's up to you really.

Considering your situation, I would go for the IB (despite me preferring A levels :D) because it looks like the school will get you much better grades than you would get with A levels, plus being around your friends will make you a lot more relaxed and happier. But whatever you do, good luck!

For P1 and P2 - same here, although I wouldn't mind some comparatory question in Single Party States section in Paper 2 - e.g. comparing rise to power of two dictators from two regions or right wing and left wing - then I'd go for Castro and Hitler.

Paper 3 - Mussolini is great, Alexander II is great, but Ataturk would be even better :)

BTW, basing on past papers there are always topics on origins of the Cold War, so we're safe then :> Also, Maths HL and History HL? How do you even manage?

It's a bit insane. I've barely done any History for a good long while, which means I'll have to sit down and swot up like a mother. I used the same strategy for my mocks, and managed a 7 (so I'm banking on a really good short-term memory). As for Maths, I needed to sort out a lot of concepts in my head. I think I'm set for Maths now, so it's largely a matter of finding the motivation to sit down for hours on end going over the History course.

BUT I'M ALL RIGHT.

After the second week of exams, I only have SL Chem, French and the Maths option paper, so everything really cools down.

The only problem with Maths is that you've never done enough, so whenever I want to sit down and do some History or Economics or English, I end up doing a Maths past paper. So I've done a tonne of maths, but very little of anything else.

Sorry for regaling you with my whole life's story. I hope revision's going splendidly for you.

If you're going to take IB, I strongly advise you NOT to take history or HL math.

I disagree here. I take both subjects, and while HL Maths has proven difficult to crack, it can be done if you work extensively on past papers.

As far as History is concerned, if you can't write an essay, then you're going to find it challenging. But if you already have a solid essay-writing technique, particularly under timed conditions, then all you have to do is plough through information. I believe a good few of the people who take History do so because it's a case of 'resorting' to a humanities subject, which is why the number of candidates is so high. But the actual learning boils down to a skill set, and if you've got it, it's not overly hard to score marks.

I'd argue that HL Maths is completely different. It's like giving a concert performance on the violin when you've never played before, and having to learn on the spot. But you get there eventually.

OP's right about not slacking. Especially when it comes to coursework deadlines, ToK essays and the EE, if you leave it all to the last minute you're setting yourself up for pure, livid hell. But if your time management is decent, you leave yourself time to sleep and revise. IB's not about cramming; it's too much for that.

That's going to be a really tough one to research and write about. What are you going to use as proof/criteria for changes in multiculturalism so that it's something you can find evidence of in historical records?
Anyway, why don't you look for a timeline for British immigration? Then you could look at it before and after a large influx of immigrants from other cultures came into the country.
