Hi there,

I should be coming to Sussex in September as a postgraduate. I'm thinking I'd prefer to be in halls as it's better for meeting new people.

Can anyone recommend any halls in particular? Or give me a quick low-down on each?

Ideally I'm after somewhere with a good work/play balance and an en-suite. A double bed would be ideal too (too tall for a single), but I'm not sure if Sussex 'do' double beds...

Any help appreciated!

(This is a bit late so might not be of help...)

Postgrad halls include (cheapest to most expensive):
East Slope (share bathroom and kitchen with 6/12 people but its really nice and social)
Park Village (That's where I was as an undergrad - its ok but no social area)
Brighthelm (got a nice housy feeling to it and one of my favourite accomodations)
Stanmer Court (en-suite, really nice although separated from "main" campus by the road)
Northfield (most recent, en-suite but quite far off the centre of campus)

From what you said: Stanmer should fit you :) No double beds though I'm afraid! And I definitely recommend halls, as an undergrad I knew a lot of postgrads living on campus :)

Hey. I'm just going to jump into this topic. I'm french and I'm going to Sussex next year as part of the ERASMUS program. I will be 21. From what I read, I understood that most of the people who are living on campus are first year. It's gotten me kind of scare to ask for an accommodation, because it could be weird to spend the year with first year students... what can you tell me about that?

Thanks !

(I might as well answer it all in one post haha!)
A lot of students will have taken a gap year (or two) so there won't be too much age difference - and it's a great way to meet British people and get to know Brighton with and through them! Campus life is something to be experienced in my opinion and I'm sure that you won't have any problems with accommodation there :)

OK, hope this isn't too awkward/embarrassing. My son (there blown it for him already!) is coming to BIMM in Oct, he's doing the Sound Production course only problem is he has no accommodation yet and he's in USA til July. He plays guitar, sings in his band, writes songs etc so I know he'd be up for sociable living. He gets intermittent access online (on a farm in Tennessee) so its difficult to make contact, I said if I could start it off he could pick up any possibilities. He's a lot more sociable outgoing than this might make him sound and he particularly picked BIMM because of its concentration of good musicians. If anyone is looking for another room to fill (relatively) cheaply I give him a good reference. If anyone has space/is looking for another person I'd be grateful to hear and will pass on to Conor (O'Reilly). Thanks for taking time to read/respond.

Hi,

If all goes to plan (hopefully) I'll be going to Sussex this September.Trying to sort out accomodation and I was just wondering if anyone has any advice. I want a really social accomodation but somewhere which is clean and not too grotty haha. Park Houses is one which I'm considering since I've heard its quite good socially but the accomodation seems to vary to large extents; some parts of it look fine where as others look quite grotty. Lewes Court (without an en suite) looks really nice but some have said its quiet and not too sociable. So basically has anyone got any advice because I suck at making decisions and I have no idea which one to pick :L Thanks in advance!

I stayed in Park Houses last year, and it was pretty decent (well-worth the money). It is very sociable as you are more likely to meet people as you are sharing with 12 others. The one thing about park houses is that it can be a bit noisy, but around April-May-June time it dies down as everyone knuckles down for exam season. Don't get me wrong lewes court is good as well, but what you said is true that it is a bit unsociable. So if you are a lively person looking for a lively place to live then park houses is a great place to live.

Did anyone who insured Sussex and get below that required grade get in? I am wondering if worst comes to worst I could get ABB.
I already have an A in EPQ (60 UCAS Points), so I am hoping that counts in my favour.

Hey

Specific question for the gym at sussex university as i am applying there.

Is there a squat rack and a deadlift area? What are the rules on doing things such as cleans and snatches? Also what are the rules on using a lot of chalk, screaming, slamming of weights?

Cheers

EDIT
Since i am applying for Medicine there, it is BSMS. Am i allowed to use the facilities at Brighton University?

There's a squat rack and deadlift area in the normal weights room and getting a power cage in over summer to replace the smith machine.

There is also the nice room which the local football team own but less us use a few hours each day. That gas 3 power cages and platforms, like 9 bars and bumper plates.

There are a few guys that lift at Sussex. A few Olympic lifters and a few powerlifters. Like 20 if us.

Chalk, dropping weights, screaming is fine.

I'm in the same position, park houses was my number one choice from the open day as I viewed Kent and it was really nice, like you I love the whole corridor thing, it's really sociable. However i went back on a visit day and saw York house which was dark and grim with tiny kitchens and low ceilings :/.

I'm hoping to go for Brighthelm instead and still put park houses as my second choice in the hope that there's an additional information box where I can beg for Kent house! It'll still be awesome just living on campus though, despite which acomodation.

When I was there( in Kent house), 9/10 people had put park houses very low on their list and just been.put there.

It's very social in Kent house. Lots.of cool people and some good friends were made. Although, 12 people in one shower and 12 people in one kitchen is something I will never do again.

Expect giant queues for showers anytime between 9 and 11am. Oh and ridiculous washing up piles and rubbish piles. When I.lived there every kitchen had maggots at some point in the year. Oh and people will steal food constantly since all 100 people can walk into any kitchen at any time.
Internet connection on campus is alright.

About a 1megabyte per second max download speed I found.

Only problem is trying to use it at peak times (5-9pm) as it slows down a lot when everyone is using it
And it can often be a struggle to stream stuff at this time.

Dunno specifics about those accomadations though since I was park houses. Internet is consistent over campus though.

Hear, hear. I am all for statistical justification (however futile this may be when attempting to draw conclusions on 'employability' of law schools) however, for this situation there really is no need; and that is said with sincerity and practicality and not 'I can't be bothered to use any'.

Apologies, I made the mistake of referring to law firms as 'employers' - i will clarify in the future. Again, another assumption (which i stated in my previous post) that if the OP is referring to reputation there is little in it. Neither a magic or a high-street firm are likely to view either 'better' than the other; After oxbridge and then the top 10 this is when distinctions become blurred and one merely recognises universities as a solid RG/1994 group uni (if that)... If you can provide any statistics showing otherwise, or even another interpretation I will be happy consider it.

Thanks for your replies! I was talking generally, I care about everything because I'm trying to compare the two anyhow possible such as by their facilities, teaching, reputation and of course their employability. But as I see both are about of the same band. Now going a bit off-topic but, would you think that Uni of Westminster is in the same band too? It's my third choice and I've got a lower offer by it and I would have no problem studying in London whatsoever, perhaps I even prefer that, taking into account that I wanna live there in the future. So settling into there from now would make it so much easier for me. But is it kinda similar? Or its not worth it to waste my chance to go to either Kent or Sussex for Westminster?
