I think the order for me (and what I will apply for) is Brunel, Lbro, Northumbria, Nottingham Trent and I'm not sure on #5.

Loughborough is best, I'm going there in September. It's much better than Brunel. Brunel puts maths into everything. Even arts courses at Brunel have some kind of maths hidden in them according to one of the teachers at the open day. Brunel is also a tiny campus in the middle of nowhere. It says it's in London but actually London is the nearest city, about an hour away on the train. A student at an open say I went to said that because it's so far away from anything, most students just hang around their hall of residence for fun. Sounds a bit boring. Loughborough has the best social side with more societies to go to and a better community feel. The product design course also has less exams so is easier than Brunel.

My second choice is Sheffield Hallam. That's nice but it's not a campus and has less things for students to do outside of class than Loughborough. The course and facilities at Sheffield are brilliant though, just like at Loughborough.

I went to Nottingham Trent open day, it's ok but I wasn't so impressed as with the others.

I don't think Northumbria is accredited so that's why I didn't apply. It's not really the best.

Are LAMDA really saying June 1st? I thought the DRAMA UK regs said July 1st for everyone. Oh well.

God forbid you don't get into RADA or GSMD (where Rosie and I will be) I'd accept the LAMDA offer. The DRAMA UK regs say you can only hold one accepted place at a time, so accept the LAMDA offer now, and if you get into RADA or GSMD write to LAMDA and turn down their offer say you're changing your mind, then accept whichever other one you want from Guildhall or RADA.

You're perfectly within your rights to do this, they allow this so you can choose one offer, not decline the rest, and can change your mind. But all this has to be done before JULY 1st, because that's when all the schools meet and student/place swap and discuss.

Congrats on your interviews/places, hopefully I'll see you at Guildhall in a few months, but if not, I'm sure LAMDA or RADA are just as good :-)

There are 67 universities and colleges in the UK...

There are 67 universities and colleges in the UK running Interior Design degree courses (or diploma if at a private institution) so there is much to choose from. Ultimately you must visit the college, chat to the staff, examine the curriculum in detail, find out what costs are involved for books, materials and travel, ask to see a typical timetable to assess what attendance is required and what the contact (one to one tuition) hours are per week. Until you do all this, you cannot fairly judge a place.

UWE arty housemates needed

Hello arty females or males age 19-26! :)

My...

Hello arty females or males age 19-26! :)

My name is Holly and I am 20 in August. I am starting UWE, either doing animation or graphic design in september and looking for creative housemates who will want to share a lovely home in a central location near Gloucester Rd/Stokes Croft.

I have lived on my own for a year whilst doing my foundation and have found I like my own cosy space. I would like to make our house the same by sprucing it as well as we can and making it a nice place to spend our time!

Halls will be full of excited students who don't give a **** about the mouldy coffee stenching out the whole flat, so if you really wanted to be in halls because of the parties but you didn't get in, then I suggest this isn't for you.

If you would like to have a nice home to come back to after parties rather than bringing the whole party home, then this house could potentially be for you!

I would like a friendly bunch of people who like to have a social time (cooking/music/antique or charity shopping/movies/bbq's/outings) but also appreciate each-others personal space. Whilst keeping the place reasonably tidy and organised.

A typical good house would have around 5 light double (possibly single) beds, a decent social kitchen/lounge (with white appliances & sofas), garden/outside space (bike storage), period features, furniture and hopefully 2 bathrooms.
If we are lucky it'll have nice furniture and wooden floors but don't get your hopes up!

The rent will be between £280-£380 a month. This may or may not include bills but I am going to try and find one with it included as it is easier. If not it'd probably be around £20/30 on top.

I am quite particular and don't want to be somewhere cramped, dark and on a main road in a scabby area!

The sooner we come together as a group the sooner we can secure a nice house as many of the 2nd & 3rd years have already sorted their new places and have snapped up all the good deals. The contracts will run from either aug/sept to next aug/sept so you will have to be a student.

I smoke myself but trying to quit at some point so I don't mind that, also people who like to have communal meals or a dinner rota perhaps, also people who like to take any opportunities, try new things and would like to go to art exhibitions and do arty things - form a collaboration?

One thing I would love would be to get a house cat! We would have to ask the landlord nicely!

Ok I am not asking much am I! But if any of these apply to you then don't hesitate to text, email or call me and let me know your name, bit about yourself and we can go from there on Facebook or something.

Nope, not late at all! Still thinking about my choices now lol.
I got offers from Bournemouth, Falmouth and De Montfort. Rejected by Kingston and now waiting for Glasgow.

Since Kingston is out of the question, is Glasgow really that good? There really isn't much on their website and going there to see the uni is gonna be a pain because I'm pretty far away atm. Right now my top choices are Bournemouth and Glasgow (if they accept me).

Falmouth is nice, but.. ughhh so far away :(

I seriously wouldn't worry about that now, I didn't include a single thing from A level in my portfolio! My A level stuff seems awful to me now! Thats what the foundation year is for, building up a good portfolio to get you into uni. The whole interview process was really long, first there was a portfolio review, then we had to wait around the whole day just for a five minute interview with the tutors! The actual interview wasn't that bad, its just getting to that point is the hard bit! Anyway, thankyou and good luck with your A levels !

Hey there,

I thought I would answer this one as a student who is about to graduate in June.
It can be fairly difficult to find work in Farnham if you don't get in there quick and apply before the other students do. I have seen quite a few stores advertising for staff members so they are available.

The Profiles agency always have lots of temporary positions going in and around Farnham. There are also a lot more jobs in surrounding areas such as Guildford, Aldershot & Camberley. I hope this helps.

Hi there,

I've received an unconditional offer from the University of Kent to study on their 4 year Drama & Theatre course.

Was wondering if anyone who is currently on that course could tell me the percentage of practical performance work to written work? And some more about the drama society there if possible?

Having never been to Kent I don't know much about the campus either. I've looked at the website and it says something about UCAS Visit days which I'd be interested in doing but I have not received an email from the uni themselves in regards to the offer, which it says I need to take a code from that confirmation email?

Just basically wanting to get an insight from a current student.

If you can help that would be great! Thanks guys! :D

Well, unfortunately, I've had a very bad experience with the OCA, and it is actually going through the courts at the moment. Following a "fail" on one of my courses, I did a bit of investigating, and found they hadn't even visited my online submission.
When I complained, I was immediately suspended, threatened with dismissal and victimised. I was also "advised" by one of my tutors to go study certain photographers, and when I did, I was faced with images of bestiality, amputations and deformed dwarves. And another edited an image of mine to make it offensive to women.
Just in case you think I'm just one of those guys with a gripe, Bucks New University (The awarding University at the time) found that the OCA's tutor support was poor, and that they gave misleading advice and poor tuition. They advised I be reinstated immediately, but alas, the OCA refused to work with them, hence the law suit now.

Hi all,
I'm currently doing an assignment on metals in interior design.
Basically I need to furnish and design an interior space using only metals - doesn't matter if it's aluminum sheets or brass tile, but I can only use metal.
I'm stuck on what I could do, I mean I know I could use metal laminates and tin ceilings, but what else is out there?
I also need to write a detailed research report on different types of metals, and basically everything related to metal. The only thing I have managed to research right now is the different types of metals and patinas.

Are there anything else that's important to include in the report?
Please help!!! :)

Hi all, had a few months thinking about...

Hi all, had a few months thinking about universities, even though it's at least 12 months until I go, but hey ho it's never too early or late perhaps!?. Basically I'm having real troubles as to what route to go down, it's between BA Arts or BA Graphic Design and I'm wanting some help, but to help you help me i'll list some points below;

- Currently have A's in Art, Graphics and Media.
- I love art more however feel the oppurtunity of Jobs where I live (Guernsey) would be limited.
- I love branding, I would absolutely love to design identities for brands however I feel I'd have to do more than just branding at university like with the A levels course, involving not only the design side but all the other, time consuming and rather boring aspects as well as the price of software like Photoshop and Illustrator and having to update to newer technology as and when it evolves.
- Art is my preferred choice of route however I still haven't discovered a distinctive style, which I'm told I should start to at least think about it.

I suppose these points could define my ideas, and hopefully allow for someone to point me in the right direction.

- I love A level Art.

Hi there,

I'm a mature student looking to go...

Hi there,

I'm a mature student looking to go back to Uni to study Fashion.

I studied art to A levels - I know how to draft basic patterns and have made a fair few pieces (from jackets and skirts to trousers, ball gowns and other bits). However, all my design/prep work isn't available so I'd have to start my portfolio from scratch.

Would really appreciate some help with the following questions:

Do you have to do a Foundation Degree to stand a chance of getting into Fashion Design at CSM?

How polished are they expecting your portfolio to be? Or is it more showing how you think and plan?

How much design do you do on the Fashion Design with Marketing course at CSM?

I'm trying to decide whether to try my luck at getting a place on a Foundation Degree for this September (I realise how late I am!) or whether I'm better off leaving this and just trying for a Fashion Design Womenswear or Marketing place for September 2014.

I'll willing to put in the time and hard graft to get there, but if I'm going to be studing for the next 5 years I'd rather try kick it off this September :)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry for the late replies, I've been away for a while.

@beccafairy: Wow, the student work from Norwich seems pretty darn good. They say that I need at least a B in an arts-related subject for my A-levels, which I probably won't achieve. However, I think the pieces that I do in my own time are a better reflection of my skill, so could I get away with a portfolio with those pieces if I don't meet their entry requirements?

@annalily: I've heard of that "foundation course" thing tossed around quite a bit, but I still don't get what it is. A few people that I know say that all art universities require you to do a foundation course, do they mean that those foundation courses are part of the actual courses you want to do? Can you tell me more about your foundation course?

doing a foundation course would actually solve that problem as they will look at your grade for that instead of your A levels. it's a one year course that you would usually do before going off to university to study art, and you basically choose a 'specialism' closer to what you want to study at university (e.g. fashion, illustration, photography...), but you can essentially do whatever you want within your specialism. it's a completely different way of learning and its purpose is to get you out of the A level mindset to prepare you for the style of learning at degree level. highly recommend it. :)

Professional membership of the Chartered Society of Designers can help, as can their guidelines on contractual procedures and insurance help.

Architecture is design! It is about designing buildings. You do not specify which 'design' area as there is furniture, product, interiors, and graphics that are associated with buildings. Separately, there is fashion, textiles, TV and film, and exhibition/event design. I would agree with past comments that you should follow your heart because you need passion to succede.

Hello! First off, may I ask why you chose oils...

Hello! First off, may I ask why you chose oils over normal acrylic paints? Is it because you've tried oils before/ think they're easier to blend than with acrylics [acrylics dry faster]

The canvas in home bargain are okay, as long as you prime it [they call it primed but you can notice white dots from areas where you haven't put a lot of paint on - which means you'll need to use quite a thick layer of paint, compared to if you prime it with 2-3 layers of white emulsion paint :)]

errrrm I'd just say to start off with pads, and then once you get the hang of it, to move onto canvas if you're confident enough. Do you have a shop called 'The Works' nearby in your area? it's like a cheaper alternative to a typical art shop - doesn't have absolutely everything in it, but the things they stock such as the basics - graphites, water colours, brushes [ which are okay, not the best though - tbh I don't actually recommend them], pads, modelling clay etcetc.

As for oils - once you leave it to dry, from experience it can take up to 2 ish months, dependant on how thick you've used. I haven't heard of anyone spraying it afterwards.. unless you mean Fixative? - or basically Artwork 'Hairspray' - which is for graphite, charcoal, soft pastels etc - anything powdery and can smudge :)

Hi, I'm currently in year 12 and I'm hoping to...

Hi, I'm currently in year 12 and I'm hoping to study Architecture at an okay Uni - Looking at Manchester (joint course with Met.),
UCL (doubt I'll get in .. so I might not even reply & the teaching is so-so apparently),
Kent (a new one on my list but it looks good)
Edinburgh (entry requirements are low ish for archy, considering it's a good Uni)
Cardiff (again, unsure.. but I do like the city :/)

and a couple others.
But basically, I've tried to 'hit the ground running' at the start of this year .. oh BTW subjects I'm taking are: Fine Art [WJEC], Maths [EDEXCEL], Product Design - 3D Design [AQA], Physics [AQA]. and General Studies ~ lol. - complusory.

But anyways, yeah.. I got sidetracked [bad thing]. and some family issues started during my revision period [Mid. November] and so I didn't do well at all in my January exams: -

Maths C1 - D
Physics P1 - U
DT Prod1: C

meh.. I'm resitting all of these this time round so hopefully I get to have at least all D's so I can continue with the subjects I end up choosing [which I'll discuss later]

But basically.. I've revised lots for the C1 resit and after looking at model answers on YouTube.. I think the best is that I've got a very low B/ definitely C?..
Physics - revision is going okay.. definitely hard to do more because of exams back to back.
DT: sat the exam this morning.. tbh I think I'll still get a C this time round, despite knowing a bit more stuff.

Umm.. for reference - GCSE grades are 6 A*'s, 5 A's 4 B's.

So my question is:- with these grades and fingers crossed by the end of A2 I'll hopefully get at least ABB [Fine art, Physics, Maths respectively], or AAB [Fine art, DT and either maths or physics] , will I be able to get into the Universities mentioned above? :/ I know I wouldn't be a very desired applicant.. but.. eh. :/ and I don't have proof on the family issues either.. but I don't have any intentions on blaming anyone but myself

Many thanks.

Yeah I had my heart set on London at first. I didn't get into the slade/goldsmiths/chelsea but I did at central, so the option was there, but I didn't feel like it was worth the money. I have questioned what you're actually paying for doing a fine art degree and to be told you get contact twice a month at central made it seem even more like a rip off.
Brighton seemed like a place where I'd be more relaxed and get better work done so for undergraduate that seemed best and then possibly go to London for a post grad. I'd recommend going where you'll enjoy yourself most, it's a creative subject so you've got to be in a good mental state to get your best work done.

I AM EXACTLY THE SAME! I have had offers from all thre uni courses and am literally deciding tonight ready to confirm tomorrow.

I THINK I'm going to go for Kingston so if either of you decide on there then I'll see you in September!

The reason why I think Kingston is the right one for me is that I know how distracted I get and if I was at Brighton I would spend all my time on the pier putting coins into the machines than doing work, haha! Also, at Chelsea I just felt quite out of place and it seems all a bit more like you work there then leave whereas the other two there seems to be more time spent with the other students.

(Plus they said you could take a beer upstairs in the evenings if you were working late. Totally up for that.)

Good luck with deciding!

Hi there! I'm guessing you went with Kingston? It was a hard one but I have chosen Chelsea which I'm really excited about and can't wait to start in September! Good luck!

If you have a lot of doubts don't talk yourself into going to ntu because of what I said. It should be a gut feeling at the end of the day. The studio space is very good you get your own desk/wall and a couple of shelfs depending where you sit. I can take a photograph of the 1st year studio space if you'd like. I hope this helps

Hey, I studied Dance at Roehampton.

I'm obviously going to say Roehampton, and I don't know much about the course at Middlesex, but I'll talk about my experiences of the department over the last 5 years.

All I can say is that the Dance department is fantastic and the students really come together to create a great team. I've seen the course modifications over time since when I was a 1st year, and the department's never been in better shape. There's a new Head of Dance starting soon, who's been teaching at Roe for years, and I know she's fantastic and has loads of ideas for the future of the department.

Sure, compared to conservatoires there 'isn't much practical' within the first year of your degree, but that's because they're not training you to be the perfect contemporary dancer (such as at Laban etc) However the people I've seen get the most out of their dance degrees are those who are committed to the full rounding of the university experience (I'm not talking about drinking), and do whatever they can. If you just turn up to your classes and go home again, you won't get much out of it. The people that got 1sts because they took academic modules and their writing was amazing, but they didn't spend any time on the practical side, now either aren't working or are working in a career that has nothing to do with dance. Those I know who got 2:1s, and yet spent the whole 3 years soaking everything up from the experience and networking, are those who are now working as choreographers, auditioning as dancers, are working in an arts admin job (which in itself is very competitive and hard to get in to!) or have completed further training in many other arts related subjects.

There are countless postgraduate choreography performances you can audition to be in. In the last year there's been a dedicated network coordinator who has brought to light so many experiences and opportunities externally you can get involved with. In 2nd and 3rd year there are choreography modules, and those are the people who spend most of their time in the studio, building up their creative practices and making contacts. There's also the dance festival and student platform. Networking is key! In 3rd year there are vocational modules where you could lean towards Community Teaching, Lighting, Dance Journalism, Dance Film etc, and many people I know then progressed to follow these avenues after graduation.

Maybe Middlesex is the same, I don't know, but there's a reason that Roehampton Dance has such a good name for itself :)

Also in terms of the general uni, parts of the admin side are a bit disorganised, and you may have friends studying other subjects who complain, but the course is definitely what you make of it. I loved the fact that it's a campus uni too, so you can get really close to your coursemates and flatmates, and you can walk around and recognize someone you know. I loved being a student at Roe!

Good luck with whichever you choose :)

Thank you so much, you have really helped. As I was originally looking for a more theoretical course anyway so my first choices were Roehampton and Middlesex so you can understand my dilemma getting offers from both. They are both at he same level i just need to figure out what is best for me.

What about opportunity and getting into the dance world? what role does the uni play in that.
I know the practical hours are not as much, how many hours a day of practice do you get and most importantly are they worthwhile?
I have so many questions :p

Thanks again

I just received my second rejection from LCC to study Graphic Design, LCC was my first and second choice and I now feel worthless and rejected . Now I have to choose between these three:
London Met- Digital Media BA(Hons)

London South Bank- Digital Media Arts BA(Hons)

University of Greenwich- Creative Digital Media BSc Hons

Could anyone give me some advice on what I should do? I feel so lost. My main concern is a good education and going to an institution that will give me a better standing at finding work within the digital world. Would the BSc look better on a portfolio than the BA Hons?

Do I just pack it all in and apply for LCC and CSM next year? Is it too late to apply elsewhere now?
Any and all feedback will be greatly appreciated

I'm considering applying to drama school for 2014...

I'm considering applying to drama school for 2014 entry. I'm deciding on some monologues, but struggling with Shakespeare. I love comedy, and feel that a comedy character would suit me best. I looked at Launce speech from 'gentleman of Verona'. The characters considered clownish, and it's also in prose. Alot of drama schools says classical/Shakespeare and no mention of verse/prose, but I have been informed that drama schools like serious/natural pieces and not a fan of comedy Shakespeare. Also if I did a comedy monologue in prose, would I stand a less chance, because I think the whole point of Shakespeare was to see how you handle the verse. What do you guys think? Am I right or overthinking?

I have recently accepted to go to staffordshire to do their BAhons in Illustration, only I have a few questions about the course and it would be sooo helpful if anyone that has been is studying on this course could give me some info :)
I am mainly wondering how focused the course is on drawing and conventional Illustration approaches. I know this university has alot of facilities and likes to make use of them, but I just wonder, how much time is spent focusing on drawing skills etc?

If anyone could please reply as soon as possible (even if its just to say you are on the course) that would be great!! :D

Hi all

So I just now (over the weekend) got a reply from central saint martins, so I now have offers from Northumbria, Loughborough, Brunel, and Central Saint Martins.

I have given up on waiting for edinburgh to reply since the deadline is on thursday and I am not that interested. I am also applying to the Royal Danish school for design, and should be getting a reply on wednesday (although this doesn't have an effect on my UCAS choices).

At the moment, my 3 that I am considering are Northumbria, Loughborough and Central Saint Martins. I have done a bunch of research, but still can't decide whether staying in London is right for me, and whether Saint Martins is famous for stuff other than fashion.

Basically, does anyone have any advice/opinions on the quality of the courses/student life, at the 3 unis that I mentioned.

thanks

What I seem to think (I've confirmed for L'bro, product design) csm is very "out there" and different and obviously good but L'bro is more technical and a good place to learn the trade?

Just my opinion

I'm an international student coming from New Zealand and I need some serious help as I have to choose in the next day or so.

So I really want a university that will be beneficial for me later on in life with a good reputation, yet has a great student life and a place I will fill comfortable in to do my design work.

So here are the pros and cons

Falmouth university
Pros
Great student life
Good campus
Relaxing atmosphere to do work in
Good reputation

cons
far away
when my family wants to visit or if I want to visit them in Germany it will be a hassle for travelling.
Possibly a graphic design course is too limited

I am not sure whether to do the general design course at Goldsmiths or to do graphic design at Falmouth.

Please advice ahh

Hi there-

sorry if this is too late to help you decide, we've only just got our official account set up on TSR. I'll try and answer some of your list:

Pros
Great student life- absolutely- our campus (for Graphics) is 5 minutes from the beach in Falmouth, and lots of other beaches nearby. Being a small town/uni means we generate a lot of our own activitiy and there is always something happening. There seem to be more festivals and celebrations in Falmouth than any other town i've lived in! We have an Oyster festival, a beer festival, a food festival, a summer festival, a spring festival...you get the picture! All first year students have a guaranteed place in halls if they want it, but there is plenty of student accommodation in the town as well. We have a dedicated International Office who would be happy to talk to you too.
Good campus- Our campus in Falmouth Town is beautiful (we even have cabbage trees for people from New Zealand!)
Relaxing atmosphere to do work in- some people might prefer to live and work in a bigger institution/city, but the fact we are small means we are able to concentrate on working and playing hard. Having the beach and gardens next to the campus means you can always escape for a bit.
Good reputation- we have a great repuation for Graphic Design, it's one of our most popular courses. We regularly have visiting lecturers from London and our students show work in London as well as at our Degree shows here in Falmouth. We have great industry links and graduates often end up in London after time here.

cons
far away/when my family wants to visit or if I want to visit them in Germany it will be a hassle for travelling- we are far away from a lot of places, we can't deny that! However there is an airport at Newquay which flies to Dussledorf, which may help when you want to visit your family in Germany. There is a regular train to London and you will find that many students organise car shares for trips home/to London etc.

Possibly a graphic design course is too limited- have you taken a look at the Graphic Design website? http://www.graphicsfalmouth.com/ our students cover all kinds of techniques and approaches and end up with jobs in all kinds of industries.

For more advice chat to current student mentors via Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/groups/263344693748606/

Sorry if this all comes too late for you- we are now up and active here on TSR, i'll be online here every weekday and aim to answer all questions in 24 hours. (Although i'm on holiday for 2 weeks from Sat!)

Good luck with whatever choice you make

Hey guys! I just wanted to say, if anyone gets rejected from Bournemouth and is unsure about doing the foundation, I did it this year and it's been really useful actually. The college is awesome and I've learnt a lot more then I expected and you can still base all of your projects on makeup. And If you do the foundation at AUB you only have to get a pass to get onto the degree course in Sept( well those were the conditions this year for everyone on Foundation going onto makeup so I doubt it would change) , so I highly recommend it! I was dreading it but it's actually been quite fun xx

Hey, i'm at Nottingham Trent in my second year....

Hey, i'm at Nottingham Trent in my second year. The course is really diverse you have opportunity to work in lots of areas during your first year, then specialise in your second year.
The night life is great! My freshers year was so much fun and second year has been similar :) there are events most nights of the week. Wednesday is social night which includes a lot of fancy dress! During my fresher year I was in Hampden halls which were great, rooms were small but the people there were what made it great. Theres other halls that have bigger rooms (none are massive when your in halls tbh) and even if you're not in halls in the city centre it doesn't matter as most aren't far away.
hope this helps with your decision!

Hi everyone!

So, I've been accepted to the Universities of Surrey and Durham to pursue a Bachelors degree in Music from October. My preferred career path is orchestral conducting, but I'm passionate about violin as well. The advantage of Surrey is the ability to specialize in conducting at the BA level, but the advantage of Durham is the ranking and also that I have a wonderful violin teacher located not too far from the University there.

Uni of Surrey offers conducting courses, which I'd like to get feedback on if anyone has taken these courses. I've been conducting for about 5 years and i've gotten pretty advanced, so i'm wondering about the extent to which I should pursue these courses.

Which offer would you rather pick - Durham or Surrey?

Thank you!

First of all, congratulations! I'm currently finishing my second year at Surrey, and I've had a brilliant two years. I'm doing the HE2 Conducting modules this year. I started as a complete beginner, but there were also several people who had been conducting for several years (particularly as MDs for shows). The second year gives a really good basis and allows any errors or issues in your conducting to be corrected, as well as being a really fun class!

Then in final year you can choose to study conducting, but it's really selective so only a few people get to study this. If you want to specialise in conducting, I would really recommend coming to Surrey and taking this course, as the lecturer is really good :)

Good luck making a decision!

Yes it is about an hour away from Edinburgh, it has about 3 clubs. The course is good there so if you don't mind not being in a city and having a smaller social circle I would go there.
Glasgow School of Art is extremely hard to get into so I'd say you have the chance of a great opportunity, it's one of the best for Arts in the UK. They also have a wider range on contacts in the industry. They are both really good and I have friends in both uni's and they both love it. Either would look great to any employer!

Although London does have a great deal of...

Although London does have a great deal of contacts it is also an extremely competitive city, so just because you're in London it doesn't necessarily mean it will be easier to get a contact. Also if Edinburgh is your favourite place then what's stopping you from going there? You're going to have to live in this city for the next 3 years so think carefully about which city you chose.

In terms of finance London is extremely expensive, I live here and if you're not good at budgeting and like to party or go to bars ect. You may find it hard to get by, especially if you don't have a job which are hard to find in London.

So personally I would go for Edinburgh I think you'll have an easier time.

Oh, also, it's not that intimidating, you'll meet some great people who are probably from London who will be able to show you around and stuff, London is a great place for days/nights out and packed with galleries and what not, so don't let intimidation hold you back!

I think that if you find a speech that you love,...

I think that if you find a speech that you love, that you connect with and you learn it in plenty of time (the last thing you want is to worry lines on the day), then I don't think it matters how many times they've seen it before. To be honest, there won't be many pieces out there that they haven't seen.

Although saying that.... I stumbled upon a gem for mine. Of of the panelists at RADA even asked me how I'd managed to find it. It's a piece from 'Cleo, Camping, Emmanuelle and Dick' by Terry Johnson - a play about Sid James and Barbara Windsor (and just life working on the Carry Ons). That panelist told me straight after that it was a 'lovely piece' and that it 'suited me perfectly'. Which I was shocked about! Because I have tried to avoid forums until now. Kind of didn't want to know what pieces were common and which ones weren't.

So, I think that even if it's one that people know, choose one that suits you! Because they'll notice that more.

So, for info, this is how my auditions have gone so far.....

LAMDA 1st audition in March:
Hermione - The Winter's Tale - "Since what I am to say"
AND Mrs Iger - Two by Jim Cartwright - "I love big men"

RADA 1st audition in April
Hermione - The Winter's Tale - "Since what I am to say"
Imogen Hassall - Cleo, Camping.... - "I'm surprised you even remembered me"

Bristol Old Vic 1st audition in April
Hermione - The Winter's Tale - "Sir, spare your threats"
Imogen Hassall - Cleo, Camping.... - "I'm surprised you even remembered me"
SONG - Victoria Wood's 'Ballad of Freda and Barry' (YouTube it - it's brill!)
Sight-reading that they provided was a paragraph from Alice in Wonderland

So..... I've got my LAMDA recall on 4th May, RADA recall (they haven't given me a date yet) and Bristol recall on 15th June.

For LAMDA, they have asked me to do the same classical piece, but change my modern (I'm going to do 'Imogen'). Then I have to sing, do some sight-reading, perform a duologue (that they give you in advance) with a LAMDA graduate, then there's a 2.5 hour movement session (I arrive at 12pm and it finishes at 6pm)!

RADA ask for the same pieces as before, but with a song, and this time it's in front of the whole panel. Obviously there are two more 'rounds' if you get past this recall stage.

Bristol ask you to do the same pieces, same song, then you have an interview with the artistic director, then you do classes throughout the day in Voice/Singing, Acting, Improv, Movement.. (it's 9am - 6pm, so a full day!)

The thing that I *think* has got me my recalls is..... my sheer determination to do this for the rest of my life. I know exactly WHY I want to go to drama school and exactly WHAT it will give me. And I think they can tell it comes from the heart. So what I would say is...... Be ready for drama school before you apply. Know that it's the right time for you. Unless you just want to apply for practice. I know people that have done that.

Anyway, Ohhh dear...I realised that none of that has been relevant to much! Sorry for writing an essay. Well, hope some of it's been slightly helpful.........

Let me know how you're all getting on this year with auditions or if you have any plans for next year :D
A x

But if you want to be a secondary school teacher you will have to do a degree in the subject you want to teach :p Once you've started your AS levels though you might have a better idea of what you want to do!

Hi! So I already have a place at Reading to study English Literature and Philosophy, but I have changed my mind and now want to study Graphic Design (I know they are poles apart, but I am 100 percent sure that this is right for me.) I am not sure of the best way to go about this... I'm already 19 so a foundation course will not be free for me, but I've heard that it is pretty essential to compete with the many others who will have completed one and also I didn't do art A-Level so my portfolio is going to be lacking... Right now I am also au-pairing in Spain because I needed some time to think about what I wanted to do, I am so happy that I did this but I am worried about starting uni 3 years behind everyone else if I do the foundation... I AM SUCH A DISASTER!!

Hi.
Congrats on your offer!!
I already confirmed my place at LCC , can't wait to be there...
I chose it because I think will prepare me better for what I want to do.
Sounds nice that you have the opportunity to specialise in one area of design from typo/graphics , design for advertising to interaction and moving image + other paths.I think I'll go for the interaction and moving image.I'm so exciting ...
The last thing to do is to find a place to stay, preferably a student hall. What about you? Still confused which uni to choose?

anyway I'm happy that I finally found someone who was also accepted there.Have you got a link to your work? It will be nice to see it, if it's ok for you.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Happy to see that you are so exited. So was I when I got into the course last year and then reality hit.

E.g. There is no paths on the course. The last year that had paths was 2011 and the areas you can "look more into" from now on are typography, social design, illustration and branding.

Hey thanks for answering! Yeah I've checked them both out, the Oxford course seems extremely academic (and I'm not too bad with essays) but I've heard the extracurricular practical music making is absolutely brilliant there. The Tonmeister course is much less music centred, but has a placement year in industry and fantastic resources for all aspects of music production. However the music outside of the course is much more minimal and definitely won't be of the same standard as at Oxford.

I got into New College - any thoughts?

Thanks :)

I guess then you have to decide which you are more interested in, long-term: musicology/more academic study of music, or music production!

Something to note is that whilst you would be able to do musicology at Oxford and then pursue music tech/electronic music afterwards as, say, a Masters, it is very difficult to do things the other way round

New College, eh? That must have been quite competitive - so well done! Higgy's a bit of a character but you'll grow to love him, I'm sure. I have a friend who did very well under his tutelage.

When I went for my interview I took a selection...

When I went for my interview I took a selection of different pieces. They don't require one thing, they want to see what you can do. I suggest taking at least one piece that you have composed yourself and you are comfortable talking about it, as at mine they asked me to talk through all of my work, but go into more detail about one piece of work, explain what you have done and why. (One girl who did more sculptural work took good quality photos to show, instead of taking it all in.)
I was really quite stressed a few days before my interview, but don't worry about it! Everything went fine! Just be yourself, relax, and enjoy it!
Which university is it that you've got a interview for?
