Hi, here in Scotland it's slightly different. We sit Highers, instead of GCSE and Adv Highers instead of A levels. My Highers last year were Maths, English, French, Spanish, History and Modern Studies ; got all As. GPS means Government & Political Studies, same as A level Government & Politics down south. You might be better contacting the unis you want to apply for and checking with them about your subject choices. All the best!

Hey,

At the moment i'm almost finished my first year of a computer animation degree at Bournemouth uni, but decided that i don't like the course, aside from being horrendously organised, it's far to technical, (maths equivelent of further a level when i havent done maths since GCSE, and programming ) plus I don't enjoy any of the units.

I want to change to a business degree, they offered me a place on the business studies degree at Bournemouth, but i'm not sure about the course or it's reputation it's sounds okay but if i can do better i feel like i should try. The issue here is that i would have to take a year out and apply for september 2014 the only jobs i can get are shop jobs or call centres, i'm looking for something more worthwhile in a business or something but you need experience usually or a degree.

I know i can apply via clearing, but i think Bournemouth will be better than the ones available. The really good courses won't be there.

My A level grades were:

A* Business Studies
A* Graphic Communication
B in English language and literature
and a B in AS Archaeology

Ideally I would like to apply to some of the best, so: Bath, Warwick, Loughborough, exeter
Hopefully my grades and subjects would be okay. The issue is that would changing course and a year working affect my chances?

I only want to take this chance if it will be worth it so can anyone give me their opinions, all comments will be very useful :)

Hello,

I was wondering if there were any fourth years studying BAM or similar at ABS who could give some information regarding fourth year and the placement essay in third year.

I did really well the first half of second year but I am struggling with this half unfortunately. I was just wondering whether people generally feel more motivated/ prepared for fourth year and what modules are the best in terms of lecturers and work loads. Also, do you guys have to do a dissertation?

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Daniel.

Hey,
I'm thinking of doing a degree in Business management (maybe with a joint honours in economics). I'm just wondering whether it will be more beneficial to do a 4 year masters degree, or an MBA

The only problem with an MBA is that you need at least 3 years in full time work first. So would that mean that I'll have to go BACK into education in my mid- 20s?

So... Would it be better for me to an undergraduate placement + masters in my fourth year to get it all done at once? Or would it be worth completing an MBA later on?

Which is more highly valued?

Sorry that my question is so long winded :')
Thank you

Hi guys,

So I'm in a bit of a pickle here - not faring to well with the IB due to personal reasons, and I'm currently predicted 26 - but knowing myself, I could probably pull through with 27/28 if I try just a bit harder.

I'm currently debating between applying for either Westminster or Birkbeck - thing is, I want to go into business and I hope to end up with an MBA, but at the same time, colleges such as LSE won't really take a look at me with a predicted of 26, would they?

My careers counselor made a point that I could still try to apply to universities that were asking for 30 for business (that is, if I do end up with 28 points), as a student with international status like me might possibly fare better. Is this true?

I just wanted to ask for your opinions and possibly what other universities in the London area I could look at. I'm a very sociable person - thus it is imperative that I go to a university/college with a good, vibrant social scene but at the same time, I gotta be realistic with my expectations!

Cheers!

Are you sure you want to go to an university that specialises in education for those from mainly non-tradional backgrounds? Meaning, the student life can be a tad different to most university settings. If you don't mind foregoing those typical uni years to study at Birkbeck then you should apply. Purely because Birkbeck is part of UofL and the prestige of that name may open doors in the future.

As a traditional student (right out of high school) might work against you in terms of grades that they expect. But i was told that if the program you're applying for is not very popular, they may let you in. Best thing is to meet the faculty and discuss your concerns.

Why are business degrees so looked down upon?

Picking a business degree can be tricky, I think...

Picking a business degree can be tricky, I think it is important to have an equal balance of both theoretical knowledge as well as the practical business sense. I don't think they are looked down upon, I think it's all about picking the correct one and which will best suit you. Some business degrees can really lack the practical side which you DEFINITELY need when walking out into the business sector. You may have the theory but need the practical experience and vice versa.. Being a current business student myself, I wanted both aspects, especially the practical side!

I ended up choosing Pearson College purely based on the fact they deliver both really well! If you are looking for a business degree - check them out. I was in your position a while ago, stuck on which course to go on and wanted to make sure I chose a degree that would have be at good stand when seeking for employment. So I was stuck between several business degrees offered by different universities, I ended up going with Pearson College because, it felt like the real deal when it came to business degrees because you mix with real businesses hands on to get the hang of the process of working in that sector.. it definitely doesn't make me feel like I'm doing a 'Mickey Mouse' business degree. With Pearson College there is no such thing, I feel like I'm already working in a business and thats the feel you need to get from studying a business degree! At the end the choice is down to you - make sure you do a lot of research on the course and see what that business degree can offer you when it comes to gaining skills and experience for the real world!

What would you do with a grant of up to £5000, while studying business? You might be surprised how far it can go with proper support from a university!
On a Business Enterprise course at Buckingham, entrepreneurial students pitch their business ideas, in a bid to secure start-up capital.

As part of their degree, students will begin their own business - this allows them to combine the practical experience that many students could only wish for with the classroom theory.

They're all great universities. In terms of achieving a good balance between course reputation, university reputation and student life, perhaps Exeter has the edge? But it's a close call. Although Durham has a great overall uni reputation, the business course is in Stockton I think, not Durham itself, which could impact your experience.

None of them would result in your CV being chucked in the bin in the initial cull.

I've got offers form Manchester and Sheffield for Information Technology Management For Business, and Information Management Business at UCL. I'm stuck between Manchester and UCL, and not sure about Sheffield.

If I was to go by general ranking I suppose UCL would be the best, but what about ranking for business/management? I know Manchester is quite good and has a good international reputation. UCL don't really offer any specific business/management courses, so I wanted to know how they would compare to Manchester and Sheffield? As about half of the course is management/business.

If I was to go to UCL or Sheffield I would have to move out. I have seen some of the Sheffield accomodation at a Open Day but none at UCL. What's the accomodation and food like at UCL?

Also, which one would have the best career opportunities?

Hi there,

Great to hear your friend's...

Hi there,

Great to hear your friend's application to Regent's was successful - congratulations to him!

I would like to suggest that he come along to one of our Open Days. We have these around every month, with the next one coming up on next week, Tuesday 7 May.
This will allow him to get a bit more of a feel for Regent's, see the campus, and he can also chat to academic staff and other potential students over the buffet lunch. He can also bring a guest if you'd like to accompany him.

For more info about the open day, and to register, please go to: http://www.regents.ac.uk/study_at_rc..._open_day.aspx

It's worth noting as well that here at Regent's, one of our real strengths is our careers and business relations team. They work very closely with students and offer:

Career Planner Appointment
Employability Skills Workshops
1-to-1 Guidance
Career Coaching
Drop in Sessions
Events

You may also be interested to know that Regent's is now officially Regent's University, having recently been awarded University title, which is further recognition of the quality of our courses and student experience.

We are the second private University in the UK, and we are the only non-profit private University in the UK. This means that our proceeds are invested back into the institution, the facilities, and the student experience.

I hope this helps to answer some questions.
Best of luck,
Hannah
I would like to find out which one is the best uni that provides the best student experience as well as teaching and learning at university for 'Business Management'. I feel that it is good to have a balance when going to uni with both the academic and social aspects. Are the people at these universities friendly? Which one is easier to make friends? Whats is the nightlife like? What types of societies are there? Which one do you think is the best out of the two for how well the subject is taught and opportunities attached to the degree both during and after finishing the degree.
Its quite daunting to know that which ever one i decide I will be spending the next 3/4 years of my life there. Please let me know what your experiences have been like as well as what you heard about the universities even if you didnt go there.

2nd year Marketing student here.

2nd year Marketing student here.

I didn't expect there to be a lot of maths, but in the first year there was a module based on maths (mainly probability) and computing (Excel) which I really struggled with as I'm not mathematically minded. There was also an Economics module, but this was slightly easier (memorizing definitions rather than doing actual math problems).

This year, there was an accounting module, which I really wasn't expecting, and have found very difficult. I failed the first exam, which was 50% of the mark, but managed to do okay on the second, so I've scraped a pass on the module.

You say you got a B in GCSE maths - with this, I think you will be fine. I did foundation Maths (C grade), and I've managed to pass. I actually got a 1st in the Economics module last year, so I think you might be fine if you really want to do Marketing.

I might also mention that last year, one of our modules was pure marketing, and this year we have 3 marketing modules and 3 general Business. The modules this year are "Brands and Brand Identity", "Marketing Communications" and "Service and Retail Marketing". These ones I enjoy because they involve a lot of advertising work, and I'd like to work in advertising - so to answer your question, yes you could go into advertising with a Marketing degree; but there are other universities that actually offer "Advertising" as a degree in its own right - you might be better off doing a course like this as there's a lot of general Business Studies in the degree I'm taking, which wasn't anticipated.

I see. Where does your interest lie? If it is in IT management then go to UCL, if for other kinds of management, either RSM or another business school in the UK perhaps. The program seems to be an interesting one (UCL). It all depends where u see yourself in the future. Overall I think UCL has a better brand name than RSM. But that's just the brand name, which will be useful if you would like to obtain employment in the country that you study in. If you decide to return, choose the program that will suit the economy in china, or your interest.

Hello guys ;)
So i have two offers - King's college for Business management; and from Cass for Management.
The thing is for the past year i was going crazy - that it how much I wanted to go to King's and I never really thought about City a lot. But once i got the offer i checked out this and got a bit surprised - http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/...gement-studies
Is cass actually THAT much better?
If some of you study on these courses what would you say, do u like it? Morover, I feel like the program structure in Cass is a bit more boring than in Kings...
Anyway, any advice on which one to choose?

No. The Guardian's league tables are notorious for coming out with some wacky rankings.

The exemptions part means that if you did do the...

The exemptions part means that if you did do the Accounting or Accounting & Finance degree, some of your university module exams would be the same as exams needed to qualify for the things you've listed above, and therefore you wouldn't have to do them again.

I think it's very possible to be an accountant with a business and management degree, especially if you pick financial modules. I've applied to do Business & Management next year and am also hoping to end up in some sort of financial career. There will obviously be a lot of competition from people who have studying Accounting/Finance/Other more maths based degrees, so I think it would be a good idea to make sure you pick financial modules and also get experience/internships in accountancy whilst you're doing your degree to help you get a job afterwards.

You can leave school at 16 and train to be an accountant, or do an apprenticeship, so I'm sure it's possible to go into accountancy after a Business & Management degree :)

Out of interest, if you only got a C at GCSE maths, and didn't choose maths a level, why is it that you are so eager to go into accountancy? Are you sure that's what you want to do?

Aston or Brunel Business school!? HELP

Currently in the process of selecting my firm...

Currently in the process of selecting my firm choice for uni, but cant decide between Aston and Brunel. I live in the south so Brunel is a lot closer, but I would live on campus.

Ive never vsited aston but have been to brunel and I found it to be situated in very nice place, the people where nice and so was the campus, and also its close to London which is a city i like and would visit often. whereas Aston is very close to the centre of birmingham, where ive never been so i dont know what its like either,

so my first question is which is a better city London or Birmingham?

secondly, I know Aston is one of the best places for business, and brunel is quite good and getting better. although aston has most likely got the better course, brunels is still pretty good.

so my other question is what would you choose if you were in my position?, Brunel where the course isnt as good as Astons, but have been there liked the enviroment/people etc. and its close to london. Or Aston where the course is better, but havent been there and have no idea what birminghams like and whether i'll like it there

By course i mean the school and where its ranked.
Im also doing a sandwich degree in Business and Management and both require AAB grades...

ANY HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED :D

Hi, I am currently an offer holder for both universities and need help in regards to my decision to which one i should go to

UCL
Information management for Business 4 years (Msci)
Offer: AAB
http://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-stu...4/ubsinfsbus05
King College London
Business Management 3 years (BA)
Offer: AAA

I am currently predicted 3A's
Both seem to be very good and well structured courses with lots of optional modules to choose from
Personally I have a passion for Business but can easily adapt to a new interest in IT if I do go UCL by learning about it

UCL is placed higher among world rankings than kings

I am in deep confusions to which one I should confirm apart from the social aspects of, both are pretty good, what I am more interested in is the employability prospects which one is better?

Overall please can anyone make a justification for which Uni I should confirm

Thank you

If there's one thing I learnt from choosing a Uni, it is that they will do anything to prove they can give you the best experience and prospects, even if it means using obscure "facts" presented as reality. When it comes to Management degrees, the only real figure you want to look at is the graduate recruitment rate (from a reputable source, the number can be fiddled with!). Other than that, the course modules, the campus and the prestige come in to play - and you'll struggle to measure them!

Regardless, I'm sure Heriot-Watt is a lovely university, but it really can not match Lancaster in terms of prospects.

Despite considering myself fairly intelligent I have not applied this at all and so my education is somewhat lacklustre; having been predicted 11 A's in my GCSEs and planning to get into Uni and study software engineering, I ended up finishing school with 5 GCSEs and dropping/getting kicked out of college THREE TIMES.

I've now decided to pump up the determination and go for a degree in either business studies or accountancy, preferably business studies with a heavy approach to the accountancy.

I have pretty much two clear options:
1) Take the next year, study 3 A levels at home while working (I live on my own) and go to uni in Sept/Oct 2014.
2) Scrap all that, carry on working in my full time job and just start a Bsc Hons Degree with Open University in Oct 2013 (they have a Business Studies with Accountancy path course which seems ideal).

Pros and Cons I've figured out so far..

Going Uni:
+ The social experience
+ Can dedicate my time to studying while actually at a university
+ Surrounded by others focused on the same goals
- At least a year before I even start it
- More expensive in the long run
- Will take some major dedication and discipline to study 3 A levels on my own in 1 year WHILE in full time work.
- The cost of the A levels (about £450 each, already got my Maths A level so about another £900 to pay over the next year)

Open University
+ Can begin sooner
+ Can still work full time (I guess banging this on my CV will kind of open up a little more opportunity to me?)
+ Cheaper
- Equal dedication to get it done ASAP around full time work (they recommend you take 6 years.. definately not)
- I'm somewhat cut off from the world or anyone in a similar mindframe as this venture is entirely solo; I can imagine I'll lack motivation at times
- Pretty much no social life

I'm pretty torn on this, as I want to get into it and go for it ASAP, however after some recent events in my life, I'm putting anything that revolves around a social experience as priority.

Can anyone offer some advice?

TL,DR? Just start a degree in business studies later this year with Open University, or study A levels for the next year and go to uni?

Hello! I'm planning to study MiddleEastern...

Hello! I'm planning to study MiddleEastern studies with arabic at the Uni of Manchester this year.. however they also offer Modern language and Business and Management (Arabic).. which is available in UCAS extra.

Now i have never studied business.. but i have a feeling it would give me better job prospects than 'middle eastern studies', especially with the arabic!

Is the business department in Manchester respected? Or should i just stick to M/E studies with arabic..

Any advice?
