I'm going to be getting a tablet for uni work to save having to carry a huge folder like I do at the moment.

I've looked at the ipad with retina display, the samsung note tablet, microsoft surface rt and the pro version. The screen must be around 10 inch, must be capable of accepting sd cards, be less than £800 and it needs to be decent spec. Flash would be a bonus but not necessary. I want it primarily for document making and reading (including pdfs) and browsing, but would like to be capable to play some minor app games.

Thanks in advance :)

Hey, I've been recently looking at e-readers as I thought it would probably save me money in the long run, especially as I will be starting university soon. Also, I just generally thought it would be a more practical device to bring with me when I go interrailing over the summer than a load of books.

However, not being especially tech savvy, I've become slightly confused and was hoping that some of you kind TSR peeps could help me out. :) In particular, I've been looking at the Nook Simple Touch, Kobo Mini (both £29) and the Kindle (£69). Am I right in thinking that most eBooks are not compatible with the Kindle, such as those sold on Google Play and WHSmith? And also, that the eBooks sold in the Amazon store are not compatible with any e-readers that are not the Kindle?

Also, in general, I was wondering if anyone could give advice as to which of these e-readers would be best for my needs? (considering low price is my main objective)

I only have experience with the kindle but there are so many books available that i wouldn't worry about them being/not being compatible with other devices. E-readers are brilliant, i was a bit sceptical at first because i've hardly had time to read over the last couple of years but ive read a lot more since i had it.

Got my 2013 macbook air today that I purchased for uni. Managed to get a decent saving of about 14% by calling them up and paying education pricing. Battery is so good and its the thinnest and lightest laptop I've ever come into contact with.
Good call going with the Air, chromebook looks cool but there are too many flaws in them to make them worthwhile I think. You'll love the air. Battery life is longgg and the flash drive is superfast. Make sure you get 13 inch screen too, the other one is just a tad small I think.

The Airs have the best battery life, because the processor has a much lower TDP (Thermal Design Power) and is more efficient. Right now, go for an Air. Up to you whether you want to wait.

That's only because haswell isn't in the pros yet.
Haswell was only release on June 1st, so next pro update will see same battery improvements

Saying that, if an Air suits your needs, why wait? An air is also cheaper

I've had an iPad mini for bout 3 weeks now, and it hasn't slowed down. Obviously that's not long term, but gaming is flawless on this device. I would say to wait out for a little while longer though. In October/November, Apple should begin shipping iPad mini 2. If the full iPad is anything to go by, it should have a significantly faster processor and also retina display. Display on the mini isn't all that bad as it stands, but obviously retina would make games look stunning.

Foolishly I had some cereal near my laptop and maybe one teaspoons worth fell onto the touchpad. I wiped it up quickly. Then I noticed my mouse wasn't responding and then the fan started to go loud. So I switched it off (in hindsight I believe I should have switched it off immediately instead of moving the mouse). I waited the next day tried turning it on and the power button turns on, I hear the fan working but the screen is still not turning on and after about 30 seconds the fan started becoming very loud. The laptop wouldn't even switch off normally, I had to take out the battery to turn it off.

Should I say goodbye to the laptop :/ can't even apply for jobs now without a bloody laptop fml.

First gently wipe off what you can with a dry towel, (not paper towel unless it's a strong one otherwise it might break up and go everywhere.) Then get some of this:

    Spoiler:
Show

Spray it liberally over your machine and then wipe it off. Then take out the power charger and leave it out. Take out the battery and then stand the laptop on it's side. That way any liquid left inside it will drain away. Leave it like that for about two days. Then put the battery back in. If it starts up and seems to be working ok you've dodged a bullet.

I think this sums the solution up, thanks for that :) Sounds so simple now though lol...I still have the problem of not being able to log into admin. The thing is, I could log into admin AFTER restarting the laptop from afresh, but then I created a new account, made it admin, and made this account a standard user account (this was originally the admin)...and now I have not been able to ever log into the new admin account.

I'll try reinstalling stuff after exams...but any other tips meanwhile?

From what I've read, this seems to be a relatively common problem, and I haven't come across a fix for it yet. All I'd advise just now is that you make sure the password you type in after waking up the computer is the right one. That sounds patronising - you're smart enough to know that - but I mean, if you press a key to wake up the machine, then this might be automatically included in the password.

Sorry I can't give a definite answer, best of luck! :)

Hey,

I had a go at FL Studio 11 in the latest version of Crossover today.

It wasn't too bad to install- pretty much just ran the installer and let it finish. After that, I had to install a font (I went with Arial) as the menus didn't have any text. Fairly straightforward stuff if you're used to Crossover (I don't know if you are), but if you're not it's still not too hard

AFA I could tell, it runs fine- I'm not much of a music maker, so I couldn't really try a whole range of stuff, but what I did try seemed to work fine.
There was occasionally a bit of lag when playing back the song, for example when switching between desktops, opening the notification centre sidebar and when running many other things (I had a heavily-tabbed chrome, parallels and a few other apps open at one point and it did lag a lot)

I haven't tried it with a large music file, I just used the sample tracks and messed around, so I don't know if it would lag with heavier usage.

I also talked to my friend who uses Logic, and he says that Logic is just better really. If you're used to FL Studio, maybe using Crossover is ok but I suspect (no proof tho) that it would become slow or laggy if you used it for long periods of time in one go, or if you were working on big files. But since Logic is native, you'd probably be better off using it

I'll play around more with FLS to see if I can find any problems with it.

Hope that's helpful

Very helpful indeed! I'm not overly familiar with FL so I'll probably go with logic but it's great to know I CAN run FL if ever needs be, fantastic thank you

I'm thinking about buying a new macbook pro sometime soon, but I was left hugely disappointed by the fact that Apple did not announce any updates for the MBP in the WWDC2013. Now I don't usually follow this too much and just follow when I need to buy a new mac, I just want to know whether it's still worth waiting to see if Apple updates it with the new processors or if they don't announce it in the WWDC then it most probably won't be updated?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Apple updates the MBP every year, so I don't see why they won't update it this year? This is what's holding me back from buying a MBP currently.:S

Hi guys, I need your advice.

Soon i'll start my college education, so I need a lot of money for it, which I don't have at all, so it seemed that i'll need to sell my laptops :( I have two of them, but I'm not sure about its second hand price

The first one is vaio s15, bought one month ago in us, core i7 ivy bridge, 8gb ram, geforce gt640lme, fullhd ips 15 inch display, the price of brand new in uk is £1400, i'd like to sell mine for £900-1000

And the second one is msi x610, dualcore amd x2, 2gb ram, radeon hd4330, I don't know what's the price of brand new one, but according to the configuration i would like to sell it for £150.

Are these prices reasonable? Or maybe I should reduce them?

What I would like is a laptop I'll be able to do the old word/powerpoint stuff on, I can watch dvd's, store music, iplayer etc, preferably windows 7 (not a fan of 8), that looks good but is also fairly durable. I wont really be carrying it about a lot, it will probably be on my desk 99% of the time. I'm not particularly amazing with computers as you can probably tell so nothing to complex please.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thank you

I would opt for these two, both from well known reliable makers, very very good value, under £400, definitely have a closer inspection of the specs, battery life of the lenovo is better than the asus, but slightly more costly. They are i5's, which are mid range cpu's, at least 4gb of ram on both, which is above the average user uses........good storage.
Also win8, theres a free upgrade coming with the start menu which could improve the interface as you dont like the old one.

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Lenovo_G580_1336868.html

Haswells are out, however usually they are out on desktops, they aren't rolled out on laptops yet, don't expect them for a few months to be fair. Better battery life and integrated graphics.

At the minute im rather confused about what laptop to get for when i start uni in september. Im studying game art design, the course is split into 50% artwork and 50% 3D modelling in 3DS max. I do currently have a high end gaming desktop pc which will handle all of this stuff but i plan to commute back home to see my girlfriend and family etc. so a laptop would be useful to do some work at home and to take notes on during lectures. I did look at some gaming laptops but as i hate windows it feels like im just paying a grand for the same thing i already have so im now considering a macbook. It runs on a intel hd4000 which i had in my desktop before i brought my graphics card and it ran 3ds max fine, just took forever to render, which surely i could just do on my desktop pc. Could anyone advise me on this please? Have you had any experience running 3ds max on a mac?
cheers
Jake

MacBooks are great if you take advantage of them. and it sounds like you will be. In terms of the graphics I would recommend looking for a model with dedicated graphics for your modelling needs, like a 15" MPB (Retina or non-retina).

I personally am a huge fan of Mac's and I love the software and premium feel, but you have to realise that they are expensive and whether you feel they will be worth the cost.

Feel free to ask any more questions.

Tom :)

7.9 inch screen claim may not be true, but the article suggests full HD and thinner bezel, which could mean it's smaller but still 7 inches.

I would've liked a bigger screen. I hope they put a camera on the back as well, they said 'who takes pictures with a tablet' but it can fit into some pockets and is far more likely to be convenient as a camera than an iPad.

It's hard to tell over TSR, there are a few things it could be.
You'll have to go via trial and error and check each solution individually.

First of all with the internet connection suggestion above, that's wrong. If it was the internet connection the video wouldn't be effected alone it would be both video and sound loading slow.

The first suggestion of GPU driver being outdated could be true. This is almost certainly a driver issue or flash issue.
I'd check to make sure you're GPU driver is up to date, then uninstall flash and install the newest version.

Do you mean install from the internet (are you using internet explorer?)

Anyways if that is the problem then I would suggest that you download Google Chrome or Firefox (you can use another computer in the house or even a smartphone to download these, then put it on a memory stick and install it on your computer)

Can you access the internet? if you can't then at the bottom right there will be a WiFi icon click on that and enter your WPA key (it should be on your router, the one connected to the internet). This will allow you to establish an internet connection, hopefully this helps

The warning could mean that your laptop's CPU...

The warning could mean that your laptop's CPU could overheat and die, I would download REALTEMP and with this check how hot your CPU gets (anything 95C+ is potentially bad!), if it's 70C ish you should be alright.

Okay seems like your fan is clogged up with dust and/or a few broken/loose pieces (screws etc, thats the reason for smoke). Now you could open it up and this would be the best way to approach the problem but just don't lose any screws!

!!!Just to warn you these methods might work or it could mean that your cooling fan has seen its last days if thats so then go onto ebay and type in cooling fan and the model number of your laptop and install a new one!!!

If you do open it up here are a few steps:

-Keep all screws together but don't mix them up (the outer casing screws with the ones from the interior of the laptop)
-Keep an eye out for any wires when opening the casing (you don't want to break these!)
-You'll have to buy THERMAL PASTE, once you've removed the cooling fan you'll need to reapply this onto the CPU.
-Unscrew any screws holding the cooling fan
-The cooling fan will feel pretty solid when you try to remove it (this is because of the thermal paste) but just move it sideways until it comes off
-Clean the cooling fan with compressed air (can be found at ASDA etc... in the electronics section usually)
-clean the residue on the CPU and cooling fan with a wipe (any wipe will do, baby wipe, etc...)
-Apply only ABIT (LIKE A PEA DROP) of thermal paste onto the CPU area and then place the cooling fan back onto the CPU, then screw it back

If you don't feel like opening the laptop up then you can try the following.

-Buy a can of compressed air (from ASDA etc... electronics section)
-Turn of your laptop and give it a shake, (This might allow for the screws, broken pieces to fall through the ventilation holes, highly unlikely!)
-Blow the compressed air into the ventilation grills until you can see it looks fairly clean, this should do it.

If it isn't you'll need to press it together so that when you plug it in there's a connection between those pins and it should hopefully show up (or you could try and solder it?).
A Nexus 7 or iPad Mini would be fine for your needs, I think... except that the Nexus 7 should be noticeably cheaper and probably also make expandable storage possible (I'm assuming anyway... could someone else clarify whether I'm right on that?). You can buy attachable keyboards for both tablets. Also, I've heard reports that some small form Windows 8 tablets could be coming out later this year. One of those could be even better for your needs, as it will likely have (or, at least, be compatible with) versions of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, a USB port for expandable storage and maybe even an attachable keyboard in the box.

Yeah, although I'm not sure if you need to be rooted to use expandable storage.

I don't bash on people who actually like Apple, but I personally don't see any point in them myself. The only thing I will actually appreciate with an Apple device is the superb build quality, however this, too is no readily available with many premium Windows Products.

I personally prefer Windows to Mac OS any day so the only thing that used to sway me towards Apple was the build quality and the aesthetics. But we now have windows devices that are like that (my favorites being the Asus Zenbook and the Acer Aspire S7). If you really want to pay that kind of money for a device, why not get one of those and get an open, convenient and compatible-with-almost-everything OS with it?

I am using a Dell Inspiron M5010 and have just purchased a battery from a British Supplier rather than handing Dell their £80 premium for an inferior battery. After ordering this, I read something about certain Dell lines blocking 3rd party batteries.
So yeah, I have a returns policy if it doesn't work out. What do you guys think about this, has anyone got any experience in this department?

As I suspected, you have a hardware power state issue. This means that your laptop is going to sleep/standby, but your hardware (or at least it's currenct configuration) does not support this function.

Try running Windows Update and try updating any drivers that you can. You can also try fiddling with the laptop power settings, which I assume can be found in Control Panel.
