Hey, I've been recently looking at e-readers as I thought it would probably save me money in the long run, especially as I will be starting university soon. Also, I just generally thought it would be a more practical device to bring with me when I go interrailing over the summer than a load of books.

However, not being especially tech savvy, I've become slightly confused and was hoping that some of you kind TSR peeps could help me out. :) In particular, I've been looking at the Nook Simple Touch, Kobo Mini (both £29) and the Kindle (£69). Am I right in thinking that most eBooks are not compatible with the Kindle, such as those sold on Google Play and WHSmith? And also, that the eBooks sold in the Amazon store are not compatible with any e-readers that are not the Kindle?

Also, in general, I was wondering if anyone could give advice as to which of these e-readers would be best for my needs? (considering low price is my main objective)

Funny you should say that, my hard drive failed again last week, third time in three years, back to John Lewis I go :rolleyes:. I don't really understand why its happened, I've got antivirus software, CCleaner, Adaware and everything on there, never dropped it and it's only left my room a couple of times. Maybe I'm just incredibly unlucky.

The Airs have the best battery life, because the processor has a much lower TDP (Thermal Design Power) and is more efficient. Right now, go for an Air. Up to you whether you want to wait.

Foolishly I had some cereal near my laptop and maybe one teaspoons worth fell onto the touchpad. I wiped it up quickly. Then I noticed my mouse wasn't responding and then the fan started to go loud. So I switched it off (in hindsight I believe I should have switched it off immediately instead of moving the mouse). I waited the next day tried turning it on and the power button turns on, I hear the fan working but the screen is still not turning on and after about 30 seconds the fan started becoming very loud. The laptop wouldn't even switch off normally, I had to take out the battery to turn it off.

Should I say goodbye to the laptop :/ can't even apply for jobs now without a bloody laptop fml.

thanks for the advice, been drawn in to the Air by how light and transportable it is! I dont really know a lot about computers, but have realised that the Air does have a lower spec processor and lower turbo boost but would this make much impact on everyday use? Also 128gb of memory should be enough right?

What does it all mean?

So I don't know much about computers and i'm not very tech savvy at all, and I was just looking for some input.

If you get a custom built PC/laptop (that takes longer to get as it isn't standard specs) is it likely a virus or something malicious could have been installed by the builder on it before you get it?

one was recently purchased and it's acting odd, but the antivirus said it's fine. So i'm going to have to take it in to be looked at and i'm just wondering what could be wrong with it

I think this sums the solution up, thanks for that :) Sounds so simple now though lol...I still have the problem of not being able to log into admin. The thing is, I could log into admin AFTER restarting the laptop from afresh, but then I created a new account, made it admin, and made this account a standard user account (this was originally the admin)...and now I have not been able to ever log into the new admin account.

I'll try reinstalling stuff after exams...but any other tips meanwhile?

Any ideas when I new pro will be out? Kinda want it for summer!

I had a go at FL Studio 11 in the latest version of Crossover today.

It wasn't too bad to install- pretty much just ran the installer and let it finish. After that, I had to install a font (I went with Arial) as the menus didn't have any text. Fairly straightforward stuff if you're used to Crossover (I don't know if you are), but if you're not it's still not too hard

AFA I could tell, it runs fine- I'm not much of a music maker, so I couldn't really try a whole range of stuff, but what I did try seemed to work fine.
There was occasionally a bit of lag when playing back the song, for example when switching between desktops, opening the notification centre sidebar and when running many other things (I had a heavily-tabbed chrome, parallels and a few other apps open at one point and it did lag a lot)

I haven't tried it with a large music file, I just used the sample tracks and messed around, so I don't know if it would lag with heavier usage.

I also talked to my friend who uses Logic, and he says that Logic is just better really. If you're used to FL Studio, maybe using Crossover is ok but I suspect (no proof tho) that it would become slow or laggy if you used it for long periods of time in one go, or if you were working on big files. But since Logic is native, you'd probably be better off using it

I'll play around more with FLS to see if I can find any problems with it.

Well the Haswell Processors were released on 2nd June I think, but I haven't seen any laptops with Haswell processors in them on sale atm unless I haven't search all the sites, but they should be out before you go to uni or even in July/start of August they should be out.

I'm thinking about buying a new macbook pro sometime soon, but I was left hugely disappointed by the fact that Apple did not announce any updates for the MBP in the WWDC2013. Now I don't usually follow this too much and just follow when I need to buy a new mac, I just want to know whether it's still worth waiting to see if Apple updates it with the new processors or if they don't announce it in the WWDC then it most probably won't be updated?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Apple updates the MBP every year, so I don't see why they won't update it this year? This is what's holding me back from buying a MBP currently.:S

There must be about 500 of these but I thought I'd save myself the laborious hours of scrolling...

I'll be doing Psychology and probably English Lit and History.

I don't have a large budget. Definitely under £500 - as low as possible please. What I would like is a laptop I'll be able to do the old word/powerpoint stuff on, I can watch dvd's, store music, iplayer etc, preferably windows 7 (not a fan of 8), that looks good but is also fairly durable. I wont really be carrying it about a lot, it will probably be on my desk 99% of the time. I'm not particularly amazing with computers as you can probably tell so nothing to complex please.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Don't buy a MacBook yet, cos Monday is WWDC and new macbooks will be released with haswell CPUs and the design may well change on the MacBook air, as it has stayed the same for 3 years!!!

At the minute im rather confused about what laptop to get for when i start uni in september. Im studying game art design, the course is split into 50% artwork and 50% 3D modelling in 3DS max. I do currently have a high end gaming desktop pc which will handle all of this stuff but i plan to commute back home to see my girlfriend and family etc. so a laptop would be useful to do some work at home and to take notes on during lectures. I did look at some gaming laptops but as i hate windows it feels like im just paying a grand for the same thing i already have so im now considering a macbook. It runs on a intel hd4000 which i had in my desktop before i brought my graphics card and it ran 3ds max fine, just took forever to render, which surely i could just do on my desktop pc. Could anyone advise me on this please? Have you had any experience running 3ds max on a mac?

7.9 inch screen claim may not be true, but the article suggests full HD and thinner bezel, which could mean it's smaller but still 7 inches.

I would've liked a bigger screen. I hope they put a camera on the back as well, they said 'who takes pictures with a tablet' but it can fit into some pockets and is far more likely to be convenient as a camera than an iPad.

I have an iPad and, though I don't use iTunes for it loads of times, I'm pretty sure that you should be able to update the iPad using iTunes without your iPhone data getting deleted as a result.

Have you tried re-seating them? Try to make sure the membrane in the key slot isn't bent or crushed, maybe try to make sure its clear of any obstructutions.

Other that that, you could go to your local computer store, where they could have a look at it for you with specialist tools, and they might have spares, but you'l probably have to send it to the manufacturer, which could induce a cost.

Yes I already have this sorted, I'd have to be brain dead not to know this.

Mac's are widely used in the design industry, so in this case the Macbook Pro would be cheaper than the iMac. But overall as you said it'd be cheaper to have a desktop.

Just be aware, don't expect max settings or stuff like that, also on a higher resolution screen fps will be lower as its more demanding.

Thanks. I was actually planning on getting an iMac but just came across the Mini and the price tag caught my eye.

Are there any laptops available with Windows 7? I have about £350-£400 to spend. I have been looking around and laptops with Windows 7 are available but are generally under powered compared to their Windows 8 counterparts.

The laptop is for general use. (no gaming or high performance needed)

At all costs, avoud the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. Get the Nexus 7.

I have an Asus f5 entertainment system and it keeps turning itself off.
Sometimes it can be soon after i turned the laptop on and other times in can be an hour or so.

It's only started happening in the last two weeks. I think usually it makes a bit off noise and then goes down. Any ideas what might be up with it?

A Nexus 7 or iPad Mini would be fine for your needs, I think... except that the Nexus 7 should be noticeably cheaper and probably also make expandable storage possible (I'm assuming anyway... could someone else clarify whether I'm right on that?). You can buy attachable keyboards for both tablets. Also, I've heard reports that some small form Windows 8 tablets could be coming out later this year. One of those could be even better for your needs, as it will likely have (or, at least, be compatible with) versions of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, a USB port for expandable storage and maybe even an attachable keyboard in the box.

I'm thinking about purchasing a blackberry playbook and I was just wondering if anyone has any advice or things not to do if I did buy one?
Also whether they're actually worth the money and the quality of the product.
