Let's say I clock out at 9:16pm will I get paid until 9 or 9:15. I've been hearing different things from different people about cut off points.

Going off what I've been told, You'd get paid until 9:06 because they take 10 minutes of every soft that you work for free, which is why youre told to clock out at 10 past. But after that 10 minutes you get paid for every minute you work.

I got vouchers last time when I was temporary, but none this time when I'm permanent.

Also no bonus for me, have to have started before 20th October to get it. A nice slap in the face, been there for 6 months and am permanent, though I'd at least get something. I'm running out of reasons to stay with the company, hours always wrong, still not got my spotlight award from December, just don't see the point.

Same here. I at least am entitled to the bonus but I'm sure they'll find a way to cock that up too. I've written down a big list of issues I'm having that no one will take responsibility for (EDC's, hours changes, pay, holidays, CPR's), and I'm going to acost a manager tomorrow and sit down with him and go over them as it's just getting ridiculous. I'm not going to let up until I get some action, not just a promise that something will be done.

you might as well put your age on it. If they're going to age discriminate they'll just get rid of you at interview when they realise.
don't apply for supermarket jobs/restaurants, you'll be disappointed. Don't apply anywhere that sells restricted products. Look at it from the employers perspective, would they rather a 17 year old who is pretty restricted in what he can do or an 18 year old who can do whatever you want them to? I had the same problems when i was 16/17. Apply for retail jobs like clothing stores etc.

btw that olympics fiasco sounds like the biggest pile of bull**** i've ever heard- they should of looked at your age straight away. They royally ****ed you over there.

Yeah, I'll keep giving retail a go it looks like my only option i suppose...

And i know man, it took me by surprise, according to their rules they did not look at the age because they wanted the people who gave out the positions to abide by the age discrimination act, but dont see how they did not consider my age when I signed the contracts, and had to prove I live and can work in the UK with my passport and such!

I'm the exact same. There are very little jobs...

I'm the exact same. There are very little jobs where I live and I'm getting incredibly frustrated. I've done some volunteer work, I've trained in first aid and I've made sure that all my work experience/volunteer work relates to the job I'm applying for. I'm doing A-levels in French and maths, which I personally believe are beneficial qualifications for working within sectors such as retail.

I can feel your pain! It's very frustrating - you know you're doing all you can, it's just there is nothing in your area. I'd try not get disheartened by it - if you're at college/sixth form then I'd probably just focus on that. I've been told that a lot of places are reluctant to hire students - especially A-level students. If you're 18 then you could maybe look at doing some bar work? Don't lose hope though - you'll find something eventually. :-)

Basically , I have had the magic interview and the one to one interview.
The one to one interview was a week ago today , the store I have applied for is opening up in July so obviously a whole new staff is being hired.
The man who interviewed me , said they would contact me in a few days but, another person got told 7-14 days ?
Does anyone know roughly how long it has took them/ when should I get in contact ?

My online application still says "application in progress" so I haven't be rejected as of yet and hopefully I wont hahaha

Hi Guys, I recently applied for a Supermarket Assistant job at a new Waitrose and was invited to a group interview. About a week after the group interview I was sent an email stating that I was successful and I would then either be matched up to a suitable job or I would be put on hold for 3 months. This morning I just checked my emails and was very surprised to see I could not be matched up with any job position! I really thought I'd get this job as my specification was a minimum of 10 hours and maximum of 25, I would consider temporary work, work in any department within the store and I would work ANY hour of the day.
Now I thought that would be wide enough for me to be suited into a specific job, was 10 hours too high for a minimum hours per week? Has anyone had the same issue, I literally said I could work any hour anywhere within the store - yet still no offer - I really needed this job!!

Heyy, I got offered a job at a new waitrose, I was pretty flexible. Anyway, I found out they only took 80 external candidates. The rest were people who already worked at waitrose. It's pretty much down to luck if your chosen, cause hundreds of people prob had similar availability. I was put hold for another branch of waitrose, I found out today that they wanted to arrange a second interview. So don't lose complete hope! It's easier for them to get back to the people on hold
You haven't worked in a card shop before, that's not the same as 'not having any experience'. You consider the skills required and then transfer evidence of having those skills from other aspects of your life. That's the same way most people get their first job.

I have to go tomorrow for 3 hours and I wondered what kind of tasks I have to complete?
Also what do I wear?
And do I just go into the KFC store and say hi i'm here for the interview lol?
Thank you
:)

Are you going to a group interview or a formal interview?

If it's the group one I had one last week, it lasted maybe an hour and a half/ two hours. I got told to go casual but I wore a nice shirt and black jeans (but these jeans look a lot like trousers so you may want to play it safe and go for trousers). We did a few activities:

1) "Speed Dating" - Basically we spoke to everyone in the group, to find out three things about them (weirdest habit, last job/school and the weirdest food they've ate) though this isn't really the aim of the task imo, they are mostly looking for people who are friendliest and smiliest. Make sure the minute you enter the interview you are smiling. That's what I did and I got the job :)

2) "Desert Island Challenge" - The next activity is we were in groups of four, they gave us a list of survival things and we had to choose ten of them from this, and say why they were important then report back to the group on why.

3) "Customer Service collage" - Next they gave us magazines and scissors and glue and we had to make a poster/collage on good and bad customer service. I did things like a smiling person for good customer service, and a picture of a witch for bad customer service. Be creative! Someone put a picture of a fat person eating food under bad customer service (Don't eat the customers food!).

4) Then we were given a sheet with questions on and went down into the kitchen to ask them things like "how long does it take to microwave beans

5) Finally there was a brief 1-1 interview which was about 5 minutes.

I had my interview on the Monday and on Friday found out that I had the job! Good luck! Basically make sure you are very smiley the whole way.

Also just go to the till and say you're here for the interview. They'll probably offer you a drink like they did with me :) It's a very relaxed process, just try to enjoy yourself and stay friendly! Remember they're looking for confident, friendly and enthusiastic people.

So I've been looking into Summer Jobs now for a...

So I've been looking into Summer Jobs now for a long time, and the other week came across this one, which sounds perfect for me. It's 10 hours a week, mainly in evenings, so I can continue to have a life during the day (or another job) and the pay is okay - ish.

But company employing is a company called Freeola Ltd? I've honestly never heard if them, nor had anyone I asked. They seem pretty legit, but seem to me like something that Rogue Traders from watchdog might target, as they promise FREE emails, and domain names, and web hosting, if you are registered with their broadband, which is slightly misleading.

But company aside, I wondered if anyone had either heard or worked for them before. My parents are really concerned about me (a nerdy 16-year-old girl) working in an environment with: a) some weird indescribable job that doesn't match the description. b) people who don't pay. Or c) Weird people who aren't very pleasant to be around.

Anyway, any feedback about Freeola would be very kind!

Thanks!

Finding a part time job...

I just wanted to let you know that I went into...

I just wanted to let you know that I went into town last Friday and this week have been lucky enough to secure two job interviews! :O

So this message is to let you know that IT IS POSSIBLE. Don't give up hope!

My tips are to go to areas of your local town which don't advertise on the internet. I live in Derby and we have a district called the Cathedral Quarter where there are lots of independent cafe's, shops and restaurants and I was surprised to find a lot of places that had vacancies advertised in the window, mostly shop assistants & waitressing roles. The big stores are great except they rarely have vacancies available, but I found almost all of them took my CV in case a vacancy came up. I also put my CV in these nice plastic wallets so that they would hopefully think twice about throwing it away ;)

Another tip is go with a friend or family member, because the two interviews I've got are at places I wouldn't have necessarily gone into, had my persuasive, happy go lucky best friend not been there to force me into anywhere which had a vacancy.

So I would highly recommend handing out CV's to smaller, independent businesses, going with the most pushiest & supportive of your close friends/ relatives and just being confident, polite, enthusiastic and friendly.

And if this doesn't work, try take a look at catering & events people online who provide waitresses, stewards etc. for big events, meals, concerts and such because they seem to hire regularly and are always looking.

I still can't believe this has happened to me, but if I can do it, after god knows how many rejections, I completely believe that you can too (:
Please, please don't give up hope, just get out there and show yourself off to the world. Think positive, be hopeful, and go EVERYWHERE.
GOOD LUCK :D

Ask around family and friends to see if they need/know someone who has openings. As a consequence of this I've become an avid believer in the phrase 'Its not what you know, it's who you know'.
For example, my second job was waitering for a neighbor who had a catering company. Ask around, people will be more likely to employ you if they know you (provided you're reliable of course!)

Anyone with experience of working at River Island...

Anyone with experience of working at River Island could you help me out? I had my group interview on the 14th of may and I feel like it went well, I was coming up with good ideas and making people laugh but I made sure I wasn't cocky. I have been reading through other similar articles and it has reassured me that I must have done well, I dressed trendy (Black slim jeans, Nike Blazers and a plain rolled up sleeve top) and answered well to given questions. However! I still haven't had my reply as they said I would receive a phone call if I have been successful on a full time job or I would get an Email if I was successful for a part time, I'm just worried if i haven't been successful at all because I haven't received either. Does anyone know how much longer I should wait? I know there is an event coming up on the 28th that successful applicants should attend but its getting close now.

Any help will be much appreciated! :)
Cheers.

Marks offers £6.52 to start with and £6.94 or so once you've been trained, whatever that means. That's for the same sort of customer assistant position. So a pretty decent deal, taking into account even places like the Hilton only offers min wage for a bartender/ waitressing job what a joke.

I'll echo what the other 2 have just said -...

I'll echo what the other 2 have just said - invest in a decent pair of proper trainers when you can - when I first started working at SD I jut wore some regular size 5 asics trainers with a little bit of arch support, then I eventually found a pair that fitted me perfectly last year (size 6 nike zoom structure +15 breath ones) with lots of arch and angle support - I went from being in agony constantly, to being in severe pain for a week or 2 whilst my feet adjusted to the new support they were getting and now I can easily work 40 hours between my 2 part time jobs each work with very few issues whatsoever. I really ought to get something similar for running in at some point, though.

I really cringe whenever I see people just wearing regular "shoes" to work - I used to do it and even just working a few hours a day, I know I have flat feet but I just don't know how they can find them at all comfortable. Especially as, I don't know about you but when I'm on my feet a lot and they get all hot and sweaty, I find they tend to swell a bit, so going up a half or a full size are you're meant to with things like running shoes means that they don't end up getting all cramped up inside half-way through your shift.

It depends on how flexible your managers are. Most managers will give you unpaid leave if you need time off as a last resort, but not on a regular basis. If possible, you could work evening shifts to make up your contract hours so your weekend is free. If you have a zero hour contract, it's probably much easier to negotiate, but again, it depends on your manager and current staffing levels.

Hello people,
I decided to ask online because I...

Hello people,
I decided to ask online because I am in a rather embarrassing situation and I am not sure what to do. I am a foreign student and I have been seeking employment for a year now and so far I have had absolutely no success. My financial situation is very bad, I am almost out of money and if I run out of money I will have to go back home and abandon university. I have good exam results, active student life and I feel very happy in the university, so it is out of question. Plus, I invested my best years and most of my parents' savings into education.
I feel very frustrated, because I am not being given a chance to work. I have almost no work experience, because I have a disability that severly limits my ability to apply for jobs and also limits the jobs I can do. I have been volunteering for a year and even got a volunteering award but employers don't consider this. I don't want any funds, allowances or anything like that. I just want to be granted a chance to work and to prove that I can do the job. It's just frustrating, because I have been applying for a year constantly and not been given a chance to work. I have only had one trial shift and I believe I did well, but I got the phone call the same day saying I didn't get it. The employer did not give me a valid reason why I was not chosen, he gave me a ridiculous excuse and I got really frustrated... I have been through all of the university's services and nobody seems to want to help me. I am pretty sure such a major institution should be able to offer me something. Does anybody know any way of getting a job? I am getting desperate..
Just for information, I am based in Edinburgh and I applied for funds just because I am running out of money. All I want to do is work, but I am losing hope. I have applied for hundreds of jobs and never really been considered.

I would stay as long as you can (unless you get an alternative, obviously). It sounds like you are being disproportionately discriminated against, but money is money. If they sack you they sack you, but you don't know that they will yet - I guess all I'm saying is don't be tempted to walk out angrily, because it's only you who will get hurt. I'm sure it's an appealing thought though.

Normally I wouldn't sanction 'grassing people up', but in this case some kind of complaint might be in order, because your manager is clearly arrogant and unprofessional, and will just do the same thing to some other employee. You have a good record to back you up. At the very least you could speak to them in person when you leave, if only to ask how you can improve for your next job, because you sensed some tension.

Do you have any idea why they might dislike you? Perhaps they feel that their jobs are threatened by you being there? It seems odd they took on a new employee just before having to let people go. Or are you just not their type? Is it possible you give out an air of defensiveness that could be taken in the wrong way? I'm not remotely saying it's your fault, I'm just looking for explanations, and being defensive is often mistaken for arrogance, particularly if you don't think much of the way they talk about clothes and celebrities, or, at a wild guess, if you were a student or graduate and they were not?

If none of the above then it's probable thay have just singled you out as an easy target. Unfortunately, this is very difficult to come back from, and simply being good at your job probably won't be enough. I nice gesture towards an individual might help (birthday card / offering them a lift etc), but I can't guarantee anything. Keeping your head down is probably the only sensible course of action, but it's obviously not ideal. Have you tried asking one of them about it during a tea break? Individually if possible. It shouldn't hurt to try, if you keep it light.

If the worst comes to the worst, just take their money and walk away - these thinks do happen. You could try legal proceedings, but it won't result in you getting your job back. Good luck in your search I hope you find something

Yeah, I've considered walking out but I know that's not a wise decision at all. Some of the younger staff members did that and I understand why, but you're right, it's not going to benefit me at all.

Actually I should have mentioned - the store opened in March and that's when I started, along with everyone else. About 100 people work there. Some of the other staff have made complaints about my manager to someone higher up but I'm not sure what happened. I have a feeling they were spoken to about it, because her attitude did get better, but don't know if it was dealt with seriously.

As for why they don't like me, I can't tell why. The worst thing is that it's not directly rude behaviour; it's very subtle with snide comments here and there. There is a LOT of bitching about other people which I have never taken part in. I'll give neutral responses if someone starts talking about someone else in a negative way, so maybe they feel like they can't trust me because I don't take part in it. I've talked about the situation with my mum and she says that's what fashion retail can be like and sometimes people do get singled out as easy targets like you say. I feel like my managers should do something about it though, but others have approached them with their concerns and they get vague responses like "we'll look into it".

I have a thick skin and when it comes down to it, I'll stick it out until I find something else. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way about the place, which makes me believe the problem isn't me, but just the place in general. Thanks for your advice! It's really useful to hear someone else's perspective.

Hey,

There's a form on the Concordia website to fill in to apply for a project, and you have to pay for it then (I emailed a couple of times before that to check a few details before applying).

Then they email you to confirm they've received your application, and email again within the week to let you know if you've got the place. If the project is full and there's nothing else you want to go on, they'll refund the booking fee.

After that it's up to you to sort out transport. I've booked flights to Spain, but am flying to somewhere a couple of hours away from my project (because I could get cheap flights from near where I live that way) so need to book train tickets nearer to the time.

I had my group interview on the 14th of may for River Island last week and I feel like it went well, I was coming up with good ideas and making people laugh but I made sure I wasn't cocky. I have been reading through this page and it has reassured me that I must have done well, I dressed trendy (Black slim jeans, Nike Blazers and a plain rolled up sleeve top) and answered well to given questions.

Cheers.

That said, whenever I'm shopping I have noticed the personal shoppers I've seen wearing their own clothes, at the time I assumed they were seasonal temps (I noticed around christmas time) But even now they're still in their own clothes, maybe it's to dissuade customers from asking you stuff and letting you get on with your work lol!

I had a similar problem with my university...

I had a similar problem with my university interviews. Instead of preparing for the interviews I just let them happen and rather than trying to remember a prepared speech as I'd tried (and failed) earlier, I just said whatever sprung into my mind without really thinking about it.

That probably sounds like terrible advice but it worked really well for me. I was far more relaxed and my answers were natural and fluent as opposed to saying "um" after every word which I had done in an earlier interview.

I currently work in retail part time and what I...

I currently work in retail part time and what I hate about it is....
- Some of the customers being bitchy towards you
- When there's nothing in stock in the size the customer wants, they start having a go at you (even though it's not your fault that it's no longer in stock) and if there's nothing in stock that they want, they'll have a go at you
- Customers having a go at you for something that isn't your fault
- When you're serving a customer, and another one comes up to you and starts having a ***** at you cause there's no one else about or they are busy with another customer
Can't think up of other reasons at the moment. But there are good points about working in retail - the lovely customers and working with great people.

Marks & Spencer Cafe - Kitchen Customer Assistant Hiring Interview Process

Just putting this in here to help anyone who...

Just putting this in here to help anyone who might apply for cafe or kitchen customer assistant position at Marks.

I found a vacancy on their website a week ago for 20-30 hours permanent contract in the cafe. You need to have had at least 6 months experience in the catering or hospitality industry. I filled in the application, did a 25 question quiz about food, drink and food handling general info and then another multiple choice quiz about customer service.

I passed both so I was asked to book a time for an assessment at the local M&S a week later.

On the day, there were three interview slots at 8, 10 and 12 pm. I turned up at 10 AM and surprisingly I was the only person that attended so not a group interview.

I was interviewed by three people, first a lady recording all the answers and a pretty friendly chap. I was asked to complete another 25 questionnaire about food and beverage general knowledge (very similar to the one online but with some new questions thrown in) and then the manager from the Kitchen in store restaurant was called in to interview me (this was the part of the assessment with all the traditional questions -why do you think you're the best for this role, what kind of experience do you have, how can you provide great customer service, etc).

The I did the role play which is essentially in there to save you and them from the hassle of doing a trial shift.

I was given a scenario in which I was at the deli counter/food hall and had to advise a customer who was planning an office lunch for 6 people and had no clue what to get.

You have to demonstrate politeness and very high standards of customer service. Also, ask lots of questions to get to know the customer's needs, find out if he is catering for vegetarian people, make suggestions and also try to upsell extra products and mention any deal or offers (all this information is given to you in pictures of products with prices on it).

After that, they left me for a while to assess my role play, quiz and interview. Then they said I did really well and they offered me the job on the spot which was great, no agonising for days waiting for a phone call.

As I mentioned the vacancy I applied for was for the Cafe, but as I had a chat with the restaurant manager and explained I needed all the hours I could get, I was told they would place me in M&S Kitchen and give me 35 hours a week, permanent contract. They gave me a 2 week rota with fixed hours with three days for training and they asked me for my notice period to define a start date. They also asked me for my size to sort out a uniform (shirt, trousers, hat, apron).

The rota specifies that it's not a contract "which will follow" so now I just need to call recruitment to find out whether it's coming via post or what.

Hope that helps anyone that has applied for a job like this.

Sadly, there are several groups of scammers dedicated to extracting money from straight men who want to be paid by women / from anyone who thinks there's a market for non-sexual escorting. Some of them have been going for over a decade. I've come across someone who was scammed by six different 'agencies' (some probably the same bunch under a different name). I don't know what he paid in total, but another handed over £1,800 in search of the dream, sigh.

Hi,
I'm on checkouts at ASDA :)
Generally, they will hire you as part time - eg my initial contract was 12.5 hrs per week, however it is easy to pick up overtime and you can ask for your contracted hours to be increased (obviously as long as the company can afford it). I've never had a problem with too few shifts - more the opposite, especially around Christmas...

Any more questions, just let me know :)

Hi, thanks for the reply, I was just wondering how exactly did you get the job? None of the supermarkets have signs up asking for new staff, and there's nothing on their websites either. Do you just go in and ask? Because I gave in an application to Iceland months ago and I've heard nothing back :/

It is my first interview for work so I am some what nervous but my brother says its like I have the job already as they ant my NI card already etc.anyway any questions or stuff I shall try and figure out answers for.
I worked there for just over a year and a half. (it was for my first ever job too)

For my interview I wore (this is gonna sound really bad)
Black skinny jeans
A long shirt
Converse (I recommend not to wear these though)

They will ask general questions like, what do you know about the store, what products do we sell.
Can you give us an example of a time you have had to work in a team.
Can you give us an example of how you have helped other people.
Tell us what you can bring to the company.
Can you tell us about a time when you have had to help someone in a difficult situation (or similar)

My interview was infront of a manager and a senior member of staff. There were no other people there and it was just a one on one basis :)

They often ask for experience in a job where you don't actually really need it in order to check that you know what you are letting yourself in for. Take jobs with really high turnover e.g. outbound call centre sales. People who have done this know how tough it is to have 99 out of every 100 people tell you to "take a hike". So if you did it for two years in the past, and are willing to do it again, there's a good chance you'll last a while. Most people trying it for the first time last a couple of weeks.

1. I have a trial coming up, has anyone had one before? I was wondering about the kind of tasks they have you do.

2.Hair. what are the rules on hair? does ALL of it have to be tied up if its long? i.e no fringes or anything?
i was thinking of getting my hair cut short to avoid tying it up. how short should it be to fit in with rules? (im female)

Hey..
1. You can request time off for exams, but as its such a small team and everyone is students its very unlikely that they will take you off the rota completely for the exam period; usually they will rota you out your normal shifts or try and give you less where possible.. An then put them up on the cover sheet for other tutors to sign up for.. the exam period is usually the trickiest time to get cover for as everyone tends to be doing them at the same time but the managers are very understanding and try to help out where possible and most tutors will try and cover you/swap where possible

2. The holiday pay is a little confusing at first.. Technically you don't get any set amount of holidays you can take.. You can't book certain days off.. Instead you just need to find cover - you could take a whole month off technically if you were able to find cover for all your shifts. Because you don't have a certain amount of days holiday you won't ever get 'holiday pay'.. So they get around this by paying you 15% of your monthly hours on top as 'holiday pay' e.g... If you earned £200 one month for the hours you worked.. You would actually receive £230 as they would calculate 15% of the £200 and pay it to you for your holiday entitlement

3. As much as you want/can get covered

4. Just be relaxed; most of the questions are about child safety and they're pretty much common sense.. They do a role play and the manager pretends to be a child and you have to 'tutor' them through a question.. Usually a maths one.. Just take your time with it and break it down.. Try and make it interesting by like asking them their favourite pizza topping and using pizzas to illustrate your fraction question.. And let them hold the pen and dothe writing/ working out themselves.. They really like this! They want you to help them.. Not do it and let them watch! As long as your genuine and you show potential.. They're very understanding about nerves etc. try to be bubbly as its a very bubbly and upbeat role and it helps if you don't take yourself too seriously and your willing to do funny voices etc! Don't worry it all seems daunting at first.. But kids are the easiest people to work with!

good luck!

Thanks SO much! I feel much more in the loop now :D

Sounds odd and not traditional interview gear but looks so so smart and better than a badly fitting bland trouser suit.
Youre applying for a fashion shop so id be tempted to wear a dress.- but be sure to smarten it up with shoes and blazer etc. Good luck!

I've never worked for TK Max but I have worked in...

I've never worked for TK Max but I have worked in a few retail shops so I'm guessing the interview process will be similar. I don't know what role you applied for but hopefully some of this will be useful.
Don't worry too much try to just be yourself, if you get the job you'll more than likely be working along side the person interviewing you at some point. people can tell if your being fake in a interview and it can count against you! So just be yourself only a little more professional, like when they ask you what you do in your spare time don't tell them you watch Game of Thrones or paint beautiful landscapes. That's your chance to brag about how suitable you are for the job e.g play a team sport means you're a good team player, socialising, stress how you love meeting and interacting with people. Some typical questions might be why do you want to work here? (The company has a good reputation) say something to that degree lol try to get across that you're really into customer service! You like working in a team and also individually! Think of some examples you can use to show how well you worked in a team like being a group leader in a project at school or something like that. Might be a good idea to get some extra info on the company. Also dress appropriately. Smart trousers or a smart skirt keep it formal. The person interviewing you will form a much better opinion on you. That's all I can really think of tbh. Don't sweat it, it's only another person at the end of the day good luck!
They are completely uninterested to the final product of this, but will be watching how each person interacts with their group. As a guide, they like friendliness and input, but especially like if you notice other people who are quieter and ask them what they think. i.e. outgoing but not overpowering and trying to outspeak everyone else.

They will also usually ask you to talk to a designated person in your group for a few minutes, and then speak to everyone about your partner in that activity. The key in that is just to sound interested and confident in your presentation.
Magic sessions are usually assessed by current staff, who have no training on recruitment. This can make it a bit random, depending on who is assessing you,

Rache2 - I would probably look to use your academic experience and any other experience that you have already to define the area of work with children, prior to getting into teaching. Whilst waiting to get some paid work, I would suggest you get involved with some volunteering immediately. Most charities will need your support. Beyond the fact that you are contributing and that its a good thing to do it. You will as you know be gaining some experience, that will support your application for paid work. Most employers will expect you to have some experience, because experience reduces risk of employing someone that could affect their reputation or even cost them money. So if you have done anything that would suggest that you are a safe bet then you need to ensure that they are aware of it. The employment market is ever changing, as are the actors in it. Although there are various jobsites, etc, the best way always is to do the leg work and repeat your request to various organisations, asking for their advice. Most people are willing to help and can point you in the right direction. I hope that helps if you need any more help do not hesitate to ask. LondonGrads

Does this mean that I have the job, as they say they're going to monitor me doing the work? I'm unsure if I need to go in a suit as it doesn't sound like a standard interview. Anybody know if this means I've got the position?

Your friends right, theres alot of competition on ALL jobs at the moment, you can never expect to apply for a job and actually get it, no matter how much experience you have. I applied for 4/5 residential summer camps roles with large recruiters who have many camps, with total flexibility as to where i'd be living, and have had 2 interviews so far, one of them been successful. Aswell as beefing up you experience you can also make a strong point of why your applying for the job, what would it do for you in terms of your long-term career goals. If you have coaching qualifications then this sort after so you should have no problem getting a job, and sounds like you have good experience from Primary/DofE. The main thing that will swing it will be the interview and from this they can get a better impression from your personality, tone of voice + enthusiasm (for telephone interviews). The problem you might have is that its getting abit late in the application stage, most recruiters are making their final selections and holding interviews in May at the latest. Also Age is a factor, I don't know your age but I know ideally they'll recruit the oldest people who they believe can control a group of 17/18 year olds!. This is something i might struggle with and have no experience of!! I'm almost 23 though. I suspect you havn't been successful for the job you applied for 2/3 weeks ago, don't worry about it, just apply for more camps! copy and paste the information into the app forms as they're mostly all the same and your bound to get something! Good luck :)

I'll hopefully have completed a sailing coaching qualification by mid-July, but unfortunately it isn't really relevant to most of the jobs! I mentioned it anyway though, as I guess it shows some experience and there are some transferable skills such as leading groups of people and the accompanying first aid qualification.
You're right, I have left it a little late to be applying! I've been revising really hard for my final A level exams, so didn't get round to applying before (and only just really started planning what to do over the summer anyway).
I'm almost 18, so only just meet the minimum age requirement for most of the jobs, and am unable to be very flexible as I haven't passed my driving test yet and already have most of July booked up with a major sailing event and the completion of my sailing coaching course - which could also be a reason why I haven't got any job offers yet! From what I could tell the 'peak' season is July, which I can only do 1.5 weeks of :S
I've applied for a few more summer schools today, having decided that I can probably get to some of the residential ones a bit further away by train/ bus. I haven't heard back from any of the ones I applied to before, so you're right I've probably been unsuccessful (I just wish they'd tell me though!).
Anyway, thanks for your advice - I'll keep applying! :)

I was just having a read of the 'annoying customers' thread (find it hilarious that its hundreds of pages long) and I noticed a few posts where people felt the need to justify working in a shop by saying the only reason they do it is for extra cash at uni/college.

I work at McDonald's, so I definitely know what it's like for customers to think I am stupid/uneducated because I work there. I actually once heard a customer's son insult the job right in front of me, and the mother said 'oh, shh, it'd be alright if you were at college'. Sure, it was nice of her to defend it, but, to be honest, most of the people who work there aren't at college, and so what? Are they automatically a failure in life because they're working, yes, an unskilled job, and aren't in education? Surely, it's better to be making an honest living, working hard, than being on the dole/on jeremy kyle. Most jobs in retail/customer service aren't easy, so why do people see those jobs as the lowest of the low?

So, where does it come from? This idea that everyone can lord it over people who work in retail like they're the bottom of the pile? I think most of it is ignorance, personally; I have one "friend" who knows full well that both of my parents work in retail, and have done for the past 30 years, yet they still talk about shop work as though it is some last resort if you can't get a job doing anything else. I feel like I'm one of the only people who actually has some respect for people who work in retail, yet others seem to think that anyone who doesn't get a degree/high flying job is a failure.

Sorry for the rant but I am at uni, and am considering a graduate scheme in retail when I leave, and it really annoys me how some people think that shop workers are automatically stupid if they aren't in education. Even if they aren't "book-smart" they probably have more common sense than 75% of people in most universities who have never earned a penny of their own money. What does everyone else think?

I agree.
I guess people who dont work in retail dont realise what its like to actually work there. I work in mcdonalds part time, and its a harder job than people think. The same goes for other retails jobs. People think they are easy and "beneath them", and that its ok to be generally ****ty to those who work in retail. But those jobs arent as easy as people think. Since working at mcdonalds, ive had up most respect for other retail workers.
There are many reasons why people work in retail, but working there doesnt mean you are thick. For example some people i know work there because its convenient to work there (hours etc) if you have kids at home/school. Others are working their way up to be assistant managers, managers etc. Others actually enjoy working there 9even though there are a few ****ty customers).

How about volunteering at a local charity shop. Or you could volunteer with rainbows/brownies/guides etc. I know that they dont have meetings in school holidays, but you can still help, as they have camps, sleepovers and other trips going on in the summer, as well as you still being help from when you finish uni up until the school holidays. Or you could volunteer at a unit near uni while your at uni.
