I've sent them an email before and they confirmed that they received my application. However, as of now (18th of June), I have still not received an offer or rejection. Do they normally take so long to reply? I really want the offer as it is currently my top choice! (I have received offers from Birmingham and Leicester but love London too much to leave it.)

I originally applied for Japanese, which I got rejected from at least in part because of my lack of A Level language.

I'm currently doing the first year of BA History at another university and I am considering applying to either first year entry or second year entry (probably first year though considering how different the modules are).

In regards to language A Level or equivalent, is this an expectation for BA History at SOAS?

SOAS's website says nothing about it on the BA History page, so I'm assuming that for single honours History proof of language ability isn't a requirement, but in practice is it preferred as it is for their language degrees?

Firstly, I am sorry to hear about your unsuccessful application, I read about it on a different threat and would not be too down about it. I would say it is quite possibly due to whatever you included in your personal statement, admissions tutors really like seeing a clear interest in a subject and that can make all the difference sometimes, even when you are slightly short of the grades required.

Linked to that, yes you are right, for a straight history degree a background in languages is totally irrelevant. If you do intend to make the application I will simply reiterate what I have written above, try to write a statement that just clearly conveys the reasons why you want to study history or SOAS, a student who understands what they are applying for and why always looks good.

Good luck with whatever you do anyway!

The summer school is essentially a set of 'everyday' (as you described it) set of SOAS modules which have been condensed into a two week intensive program to offer to non-SOAS students. While it is the first time it is being run and therefore hard to judge it properly, it is fair to assume it will be fairly similar to studying the corresponding course proper. As for reputation, well we like to think we are fairly reputable when it comes to the regions we study, the Government and Politics of the Middle East course in particular is a very popular undergraduate course taught by a fantastic lecturer, Charles Tripp, and would most likely be an excellent experience.
Hope that helps.

If you don't mind me asking, are you applying on the basis of your OU results or on your previous A Level results?

I ask because my A Level results were too low to directly satisfy the course requirements, so I applied hoping they would take the results from my CertHE into account, which is worth 120 points.

As I applied during the course, I obviously didn't have my results at the time of application, so they would have been making a conditional offer.

Once I have my results from the CertHE, is there a chance I would get a better response applying for 2014 entry with a CertHE that has already been completed?

I am loathed to repeat myself because you routinely ignore what I (and others) say... but like I said in your other thread, most universities will consider a CertHE in lieu of A levels but you will not be made a conditional offer. You need to actually have the qualification before you can be considered. If you are serious about studying Japanese you should be spending this year learning a language, any language, to show that you can. If you do not attempt to show some language learning ability then you risk being rejected again.

They will certainly take the CertHE into account if its in a relevant area. I wanna do Japanese and i am doing an OU degree in English Language right now. They told me thats fine but i emailed and called around a little to ask what they want from that. They said 120 credits same as you mentioned. My A levels are all over the place and OU is degree level so pretty much only using my OU credits as theyr more than typical students have anyway as its way above A level. Interestingly i still got denied on the basis that although i passed, they werent amazing results. so 2014 and actually putting in some effort is my plan. applied for a job today to pass the time and not be poor in the meantime.

Ugh, what a load of it. Some inconsistencies in...

Ugh, what a load of it. Some inconsistencies in U.K. league tables and suddenly everyone is scrambling to the be first to prophesies doomsday for a university which has always been far more popular outside the U.K. than in it. *newsflash* U.K. league tables have been inconsistent for far too many U.K. unis since fees have gone up. The press releases issued by some of these schools make me wonder why they agree to be rated in the first place. There is something seriously flawed in a ranking system which puts a uni like Sussex at 11th one year and 50th two years later, or Surrey from 19th to 8th in the same span of time:

Just the inconsistencies between two league tables should be enough to discredit them. Some with as many as 7 differences in the top thirty (See Complete University vs. Guardian).

If your argument is that SOAS applicants are now rethinking their choice because they suddenly want higher paying and more competitive jobs (as if they didn't before?) and SOAS degrees don't yield them, then you may want to rethink your argument.

First, SOAS degrees have always been somewhat niche. This is cited as an advantage more often than as a disadvantage. To the extent that the school is called the School of Oriental and African Studies, all the programs are to that extent qualified by reference to "Asia, Africa and the Middle East". If someone was intent on studying those parts of the world, realizing that they are not the areas in which other major research institutions specialize would not likely detract from their initial interest.

On the contrary, in an increasingly competitive job market, it should stand to reason that one would invest in opportunities which would yield a competitive edge, that which would set you apart from other applicants - say...a language not taught with the same academic rigor, if at all, at other unis? or...a module on Islamic finance and banking to support your econ degree? or...per the above post, a law degree that steps outside the parameters of one country's jurisprudence? or...to consider something other than the "high paying job" potential of a degree, critical perspective on religious studies that goes beyond the tired Abrahamic trifecta?

Second, I don't buy that the school is doomed because fees have been raised and people are therefore less likely to attend. I stress this because a quick glance the Guardian's PG subject tables show that in almost all subject areas in which SOAS is ranked (another shortcoming I will get to), at least 50% of the FT students are from outside the U.K. and therefore pay anything in the range of 10-15,000 (This, I should add, is still a steal for students from many countries and even a rise in those fees is unlikely to deter them from enrolling.)

Finally, I would direct your attention to one redeeming aspect of league tables, especially those compiled by the Guardian) to make a more informed assessment of a uni's worth generally, and more importantly, to individual students. In the PG subject tables, one can scroll through the student-staff ratios for any given subject. Leaving aside the fact that SOAS is in the top five for most of its areas of expertise listed by the Guardian, SOAS remains only 1-2-3 places behind Oxbridge and LSE for almost every listed subject's number of staff per student. As an incoming student worried about getting my money's worth, those are the numbers I would be concerned with.

This is all leaving aside the well-received point that SOAS' size and specialization (read: no STEM programs) should all but exclude it from comparison to universities with their own hospitals (an argument which should be made under both the good and bad light of rankings), as well as the fact that SOAS is much better received outside the U.K. than within it, an observation I make only from personal experience and extensive travel.

I'm not sure why I felt the need to make this case so extensively, but I guess I'm just tired of people assigning a number to quality of education. Students should be aggressively researching programs that fit their budgets and their interests, and their potential for becoming a critical but contributing member of society. Alas, a quick glance at league tables or clearing lists does not research make.

Here is my experience of SOAS so far. It hasn't been easy but it has been rewarding. I worked hard - much more than a lot of people who inevitably had to drop out because they complained that the workload was too high. All the people who complained they didn't want to do the classical Japanese bit - all you had to do was join a double degree and perhaps even learn an extra language while you are there - I opted to do Korean. That way you could choose not to study those and pick whatever you wanted.

And the people who said they could barely pass the N2 exam after 4 years are not exactly exemplar students in my opinion. They predict us to be at a minimum of an N3 level by 2nd year and as a second year, I am already preparing (and have passed mocks for N2) with minimal effort (an hour extra every 3 days since the start of the year).

I have seen my fourth year seniors - the best students are fluent. It really is up to you how you use your four years at SOAS - if you take the challenge, I don't see why you wouldn't be fluent at the end of the degree.

Also, sure money pays bills but I'd rather be happier doing a smaller job than do something I find boring. That is the reason I chose to do Japanese and Korean and is probably the reason I like studying here.

Exactly, many graduates, including myself make use of the third year rather than just mess about, and become fluent, many of my classmates were fluent in fourth year, a lot of the best japanese graduates are from Soas, better linguistically than most Oxbridge graduates (a Cambridge friend said the Japanese of her classmates was.'crap'). When I graduated, I passed the old JLPT 1 with 75%	and as I was only tenth highest in the soas exams in my year, there are probably others who did even better on Jlpt. I find the most graduates in Japan associated jobs tend to come from Soas, I currently work in Japanese tax in KPMG and four of my colleagues are from Soas. I know many in Japanese departments of Bloomberg, Willis, Deloitte, PWC and others who are all SOAS graduates.
I will say that soas is a more academic than career focused uni but due to the unique range of degrees, you can make yourself stand out. Indeed, I've not had much problem finding work even though I graduated in 2010.

I posted this thread already somewhere else, but I think this page is more appropriate for my questions.

My name is Ruben and I am currently finishing a BA in European Studies at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. After a gap year, doing 2 internships, I would really like to study International Studies and Diplomacy at SOAS.

Is there anyone out there, who is currently following this programme?

I particularly have questions regarding admission and job prospects after graduation.

How hard is it to get in? Do you know the ratio of applicants and people who get accepted?

How well known is the degree in continental Europe and among institutions, such as the EU or UN?

Thanks for your help.

Regards from NL,
First and foremost, Dinwiddy is quite the place to be if your priority is to meet people from SOAS. Dinwiddy is standard, BUT it is the cheapest, most worthwhile option in central London. For en-suite rooms, its the cheapest I have seen so far in London and its not a bad place to live. Also, its 15 minutes walk from the SOAS main campus, around the corner from the Vernon Square campus and up the road from King's Cross tube station. There are also several bus stops within a minute's walking distance which will take you to Leicester Square, Victoria and other places for nightlife. Just up the road from Dinwiddy is a Tesco, and a little further (about 10 minutes walk), there is a large Sainsbury's and a small shopping centre with movies at Angel.

The area around Dinwiddy is generally very safe, I have not heard of any incidents at all. Only around SOAS, pickpocketing is a slight problem, but people publicize any incidents on the SOAS facebook groups, so you've always got a heads up.

The British Museum is right next to SOAS, other museums are a couple of tube stops or a bus-ride away. In terms of shops, Dinwiddy is about 30 minutes walk from Oxford Street, the main shopping street in London, and near SOAS there's a small "high street" called the Brunswick centre, with a few restaurants, shops and a supermarket.

In terms of jobs, I am not too sure, I haven't checked out the job scene as yet because my Law degree kept me a little busy! But if you're better at time management than me, you should go for it!
Living in London seems expensive, but if you budget correctly its not too difficult. The most money would probably go to transport, to be honest, depending on how much you'd travel by tube. The bus is cheaper but takes longer.

I hope this has helped :)
Hope to see you at SOAS, all the best!

2 months ago I received a conditional offer from the SOAS. Until yesterday I've been waiting for another feedbacks but as it looks like right now SOAS would be my CHOICE.
Is there anyone who is currently studying this course? I am a student from the Czech republic and I am willing to listen anyone's opinion in terms of professors, campus, atmosphere etc.

Also the name of my course is precisely Law and Persian. I was wondering whether is there any possibility to change the language. Because the general subject is obviously Law ... Persian was my personal choice.

Thanks.

Hi!
I just finished first year of Law LLB at SOAS!
The one thing I have to say is that SOAS has an amazingly diverse atmosphere, which you probably cannot find elsewhere. Yes, other universities have cultural diversity, but it seems to me that at SOAS these different cultures are shared and appreciated to a unique extent.
The campus itself is welcoming and lovely, there is always a protest going on, we occasionally have visits from camels or donkeys, and don't be surprised if you see someone climbing a tree. SOAS has so many quirks that give it its unique charm.
At the same time as being a quirky uni, SOAS has an impressive staff. Even though other universities may offer similar courses to do with languages, Asia and Africa, their standard will not be on par with SOAS', as the focus of our uni is Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

For your specific course, Law and Persian (or whichever language you choose to substitute for Persian), this is a BA and will not qualify as a practicing law degree. HOWEVER, you can still go ahead and do the qualification to practice, but you'll have to put in a little more study (if this is, indeed, your goal). Basically, you'll do two law courses alongside your language study, and the two courses you do will be theoretical (very interesting courses, don't be put off by the fact that they are all about theory!), as opposed to technical ones about practicing law.

SOAS is not too difficult about course changes, it shouldn't be too difficult, except that the SOAS admin is notoriously slow.

I hope this helps you make your decision! All the best :)

[QUOTE=eMJaaay♥;22943011]1. The admin is REALLY really REALLY bad. Get with it and be prepared to do a lot of running around trying to sort stuff about.

I have a question: does the SOAS career service work well? I mean, is it really useful and supporting to find a job while you are still studying (MA)? Or not?
I am asking because in my (underdeveloped) country (Italy), offices such as careers service are completely useless and ineffective! Also, there is no job left to find ...
So tell me, anyone experienced that?

Is there someone who already attended this program which could give me some feedback about it? Or someone else in the music department, could you tell me what is like? And most important: SOAS career service really works?? (I will need to work to finance my studies).
Thank youuu!!!!! :)
