Some really subtle quoting there :p I know what you mean, i had to read the little side notes in order to get what they were saying half the time - i mean, who even says 'I am in blood stepp'd in so far that, should i wade no more, returning were as tedious as to go o'er'? Why not just say 'it's to late to go back now'?! :S

quoting? hah I made it up on the spot - weird huh? ;) bloomin' heck that quote is tedious, infact, all of Shakespeare is tedious!

It's like, you know in English Lit when you're asked to analyse the sentence 'the curtains were blue', and your teacher's like 'the author says the curtains were blue to emphasise the cold relationships between the characters in the room, as well as act as a fallacy towards the temperature outside and in the house'.

What the author really meant was that 'the curtains were blue', whereas Shakespeare acts like the teacher in explaining why....just putting it in much more complicated Olde English :p

I have a few questions about Bowland accommodation:

Could you please tell me the difference between the; basic standard, standard and basic ensuite and if you could tell me how many people you share with, too, that would be excellent.

Basic standard is called 'Bowland Annexe' and there are 20 rooms per floor divided between two kitchens. Standard is called 'Bowland Main' and are the newest rooms on campus with 9-12 per kitchen. And basic ensuite is called 'Bowland Halls' where you will be living with 3-5 people per flat :)

Hope that helps.

Accommodation Help between Furness and Grizedale

Hi there, I'm Jordan - a current fresher and...

Hi there, I'm Jordan - a current fresher and member of Furness's JCR exec. :)

Good choice on choosing Lancaster, I'm sure you'll have a great time here regardless of which college you choose.

Furness and Fylde are the two newest accommodation blocks only being completed at the end of 2006. Furness's new accommodation was four blocks of superior en-suite accommodation. You can see what one of the superior en-suite flats looks like on our 2013 video here. This is what a Grizedale en-suite room looks like; I think Grizedale townhouses have been renovated recently but not sure on when the en-suites were last refurbished. Both colleges have nice looking, modern accommodation either way. :)

Furness College is well known for being the smallest college with a community feel, if you watch through the video posted earlier, that was one of the key reasons for why people love Furness. We have roughly 1000 undergraduates at a time with a fresher intake of about 400 a year, and are renowned as a drinking college. We have an excellent paint party in freshers week, among other events, as well as our bi-annual 15 hour bar crawl in both first and second terms. You get to know the whole social scene of Furness through these socials and make a lot of friends outside of your immediate friendship groups. If the social and community side is your main interest, I can't recommend Furness enough - it has been a great year and will be even better for next year's freshers with our new college bar and space that we didn't have during this year's intro week.

As to sporting events - neither Furness or Grizedale are particularly renowned as sporting colleges - but every college gets very involved so there will be opportunities wherever you go. Each college has at least two football teams, two netball teams and bar sports teams. Each college competes in the carter shield, which is basically an inter-college tournament with a different sport each week, and each college has their own annual sporting rivalry face-off. Furness has Patriots, which is a weekend of loads of sports matches against Cartmel. There's Legends between Grizedale, County, Fylde and Pendle, as well as Founders which is Lonsdale vs Bowland. Each college gets very involved in sporting endeavors, so you can be sure to find teams and sporty people in any college. On top of that, if you're really serious about a certain sport there's often the uni teams which take members from all colleges, so college would be unimportant in that aspect.

As to distance from the sports centre, I'd agree with Tish, they're probably about the same. :)

Hey! Just wanted to see who else has put Pendle College as their first choice for accommodation starting September.

Why did you choose Pendle?
What was your second choice?
What accommodation type have you selected?
What course are you hoping to do?

I chose Pendle because it was close to the InfoLab, as well as close to the bus stop. Pendle residents also move in on the Saturday, which would be more convenient for me. They had the type of accommodation I wanted and I like the look of the rooms!
My second choice was Grizedale.
I have chosen Superior Ensuite!
Hopefully doing IT for Creative Industries.

Hope to see you in September!

So I have a worry.
I have a place to study comp sci at Lancaster, but I've never actually done any kind of comp sci... I'm very interested in it, I spend ages reading about logic and the theory behind... but anyway, I have a whole month (September) to prepare for uni, what do you recommend I do to attempt to make my transition into the course as smooth as possible!
(I'm not afraid to work hard!) Thanks guys!

You don't need to do anything.

Every University course starts off assuming either zero, or very near zero, knowledge, and the first term is essentially just to get everybody up to the same level, regardless of what they have done before coming to University.

For example, I did Maths at Lancaster and about the first 6 weeks was all just A level Maths and Further Maths, to get everybody up to the basic standard required for the rest of the year, and other courses are the same.

Opinions on Lonsdale College?

My friend lives in Lonsdale and at the moment...

My friend lives in Lonsdale and at the moment there isn't too much going on there but it's the quiet study period. This college is a bit of a walk into the centre of campus so that may bother you if you want to roll out of bed and into lectures. It's handy in a way as it has an off-campus kitchen which you can rent out for parties if you want. It's known as the "party college" but all colleges each hold events. Lonsdale have a DJ booth, dance floor and games room. The bar is rather spacious so they make the most of it. Being out of the centre is nice if you want to make the most of the summer (it's been very nice the last couple of weeks). Outdoor BBQs are nearby and there's enough grassy space to lounge around. If you like playing sports this college is also relatively near the football pitches.

I'm at Lancaster at the moment but it's not my college. Can't complain :)

It is indeed expensive, I think the rent increased for our year too D: brilliant haha. I get what you mean, there's no way I'm going for en suite, too expensive plus I don't feel I really need it. Uuum I haven't heard much other than it's apparently "lower quality" than others.. but yeah as you mentioned they're refurbishing some of Bowland for next year and it looks pretty darn sweet. 8) Hahah I'm sure you'll get the odd hour sleep :P just depends on your personal preference really, 20 may be tolerable! :D

Applications for accommodation are now open, and just can't decide between County and Furness!! I'm sure I'll be happy where ever though. Looking forward to starting? :D

I've just finished my application and chose bowland upgraded standard and furness standard! don't know my chances to get into my first choise, though. Furness seems awesome but in matters of price I need to get into bowland. yes i will torelate 20 xD but picked quiet area, i need to sleep a lot or i look like a sleeply zombie the next day. hope i can meet people equally nice and sociable xb you shouldn't think too much like i did last year, just be intuitive and choose the one you have a better vibe :D

i couldn't be more thrilled for the upcoming year, but scared as hell xD

Hi Matthew, as you can probably tell from my...

Hi Matthew, as you can probably tell from my username, I'm going to be biased. I'm a Furness first year currently on the exec of Furness College, which I personally believe is the best on campus (although most people say that about that college), but I also feel like we fit your description of what you want in a college.

Furness is the smallest college on campus, and such everybody gets to know everybody and we have great and frequent nights out. Our pub, Trevor, is excellent and one of the best on campus, we have a central location on campus - accommodation is a two minute walk from Alexandra Square and the shops, and close to the majority of lecture theatres. We had our first massive paint party this year which was incredible (see paintglowtour.com if you haven't seen one before), and Furness is home to the greatest social at the university - the bi-annual, legendary 15 hour bar crawl. It is an event of epic proportions, as you can imagine, and definitely something that you don't want to miss.

Our two accommodation offerings are upgraded standard and superior en-suite, you can see examples of both of them in our 2013 Why Furness video:

Lonsdale is traditionally known as the party college, but for me it's still living on reputation in that aspect. Lonsdale friends of mine had a less party orientated freshers week than I did and their extravs have supposedly been on the decline for the past few years (although I can't personally say, not having been there). All colleges have their share of events and partying, and I don't think that Lonsdale particularly stands out in that aspect. Your best bet, whatever college you select, is to find friends in Freshers Week who like to party as much as you do - they'll be easy to find. Most nights out are just nights out with your mates and not college created anyway :)

Fylde, situated next to Furness in central campus, is traditionally seen as the sports college. This could be because of their sports bar which I do enjoy visiting for football matches every now and then. As to their sports teams, with the exception of netball this year, they're not particularly any better or worse than the other colleges. There's Legends between County, Fylde and Pendle, as well as Founders which is Lonsdale vs Bowland. Each college gets very involved in sporting endeavors, so you can be sure to find teams and sporty people in any college. On top of that, if you're really serious about a certain sport there's often the uni teams which take members from all colleges, so college would be unimportant in that aspect.

Let me know if you have any more questions :)

Hi, I'm looking to do exchange at Lancaster next year from January to mid-year.

As I'll only be there for the Lent and Summer terms, I can only apply for courses that run during these times - when I checked out the course module search online, none of the subjects said what terms they were offered in.

How do I see what semesters subjects are offered?

If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be awesome!

Thanks heaps :)

G'day mate! I met a lot of Australians in my last year at uni so I'm sure you will too and have "heaps" fun!

As for the modules, I tried to find it but couldn't see it anywhere. I know that information used to be in the module pages but it's no longer there. Bummer.

You would be surprised how good the night life is...

You would be surprised how good the night life is at Lancaster. As other people have said, we have 9 colleges, all with their own bars, each college has student execs who arrange events and socials all year long. There are a massive amount of societies available across campus who all do their own things as well, so there is always something going on somewhere. And its commonly forgotten that Lancaster has two universities, so there are a large choice of bars and clubs in the city centre with student nights every night off the week.

Compared to the other unis I have visited friends at, even the ones in city centres, we have a hell of a lot available to us.

1. Which is the best college(accommodation)? I was thinking Lonsdale because of the ensuite stuff and the bar is good apparently or maybe a townhouse but what do you think?

2. Is the computer department good/popular? I've got an offer for Computer Science Bsc :)..

3. Guy to Girl ratio? So are there more girls or more guys at lancaster?

4. How good is the night-life?

5. If I bring my tv and Xbox, will I still have to pay for a tv license? Because I won't actually be watching live tv so?

6. Final question aha, I have family in Blackpool, what is the transport like to and from lancaster? And if you know how much it costs per journey?

1. Currently in a Townhouse - relatively the best accommodation on campus in my opinion

2. Computer Science Department is really good - lectures really good and coursework interesting and relevant - android development option at end of first year - also students get 24 hour access to dedicated labs for the department which is great around deadlines (current Computer Science and Maths student)

4. Not the best but with 9 college bars on campus can be a good night

5. If your not watching tv you don't need a tv license

6. trains and buses are very regular from lancaster and the university area.

Minors aren't an influence on the future unless you want to incorporate them into your actual degree by changing your course structure. You have plenty of choices e.g. Politics, Sociology, Law, Philosophy, Gender & Women, Economics, Geography, English, Creative Writing, Psychology, and Criminology. I am studying History as my major but took Gender & Women and Criminology as my minors. There's some overlap which helps my overall understanding e.g. impact of industrialisation on crime, family structure, etc.

Well I'm going to be doing Physics at Lancaster, but via the OpenPlus route. Link below if you don't know what it is. So with selling the house, I thought moving Lancaster would be beneficial as I can get to know the area first :) It just seemed pointless renting a place in Manchester for 2 years, then moving Lancaster. I kind of want a new start.

Are you thinking of getting student accommodation? I've done some good research now, so I have a good idea on the nice places :)
