I've mentioned the reason in a reply up above. They had their own business, it went to hell and they both went bankrupt. They're not allowed bank accounts apparently.

Is it illegal to open a bank account in my name and let them have it to put money into/take money out of, so they have no excuse to use my money?

Sorry didnt see that bit.
Errr technically i think it is or atleast against bank policy... for instance when i tryed to get a statement for my dad from his account they wouldnt let me since its not my account... you could try setting up one in a joint name with you and one of them?
But legally speaking im not sure, theres potential for getting into trouble but id consult a legal or financial advisor on that.

The big private halls of residence are certainly convenient but they are super expensive for what they offer. Maybe not a bad option for first year though, as you find your feet and get acquainted with London.

Hi,
You need a National Insurance Number. You can get one from a JobCentrePlus office in the UK, but you need to attend for an interview, so I doubt you can get one in advance of arriving.

In order to get one, you need to prove that you are able to work in the UK (passport etc) and that you are going to work in the UK, or are actively seeking for work - so you need to bring a letter from an employer or employment agency that you are registered with - stuff like that.

Probably best to ring them up and find out what you'd need.

This has more info.

Well Everyone likes freedom to live their life...

Well Everyone likes freedom to live their life their way, but when it comes to holding of finance not all are good at these main topic, because we have never been taught to manage money from the very young age, if that was the case, you would have now manage your finances easily, but for now I will suggest you to stay at uni and look for a job that gives you a holiday at weekends so that you may work for weekends for your 1st internship, well, if you break up your income and costs and then analyze where to put money and where to save, this could help you in a better way, lets take an example
you earn suppose $500 a month and you have following costs to be maintained :
Paying rent of your uni house $100
Paying for the food and other essentials $300-350 P.M
you still get left with $100 and you may save them totally or partly you may use it for leisure and partly you may save it, so that you may get $50 plus apart from your regular salary for getting ease at spending again you should target some amount from your income to save every month from your job income and in this way you may also save for contingencies in future.....

I'd say they are not a bad buy, you could definately do a lot worse.i bought some nearly a year ago and as of a couple of days ago they had doubled. So not too shabby. I brought them as I thought they were a safe bet as the government will never let them go under and before the recession either 5/10 years ago I think they were approximately £10 a share of something (can't be bothered to look it up) but it worked out that if they increased to a similar price I would earn £50000 roughly from a £3000 investment although that would take a few years, if ever. But they areprettysound although I can't say if or how much they will increase by and I believe once they start sorting out RBS more their shre price shall continue to grow (hopefully lol)

Hi people,

Basically I am currently filling out my NHS Bursary application form, this is the first time I am doing this.
It was all going fine, until I got up to the part about forthcoming income and expenses for my academic year (13/14). I'm confused as I won't be getting any income so would I just enter £0.00 for everything. And there's a part that also says "maintanence recieved" does this mean the maintenance loan I'm going to get for the year? It also asks to include the rent in the part about expenses, but I have no idea what that is yet?

Please any help would be amazing!!

Thank you, Calum :)

So, I'll be 16 when i go to Africa - Mozambique in August.

I need to raise £1500 to go.

I'm going with an organisation and we're going to visit the orphanages, the townships, schools, churches and more; We purely want to help people there and just get a bit of realisation of what life really can be like!

Any ideas of how i can raise the money to go?

Pleaaaase!

If you really gave two hoots about the wellbeing of orphans in Mozambique you would not spend $1500 on the cost of the trip. You'd simply send that $1500 directly to a relief agency who could put it to some actual use.

I hate it when people do this. All this is is a glorified holiday (paid for by naive sponsors) to an exotic location at the end of which you can tell people how much you "truly understand poverty" and have an affinity with African orphans. It's all about using other people's money to feel good about yourself. It's about as selfish an act as there is.

I have no idea if this will make sense, but hey;

In a business transaction, in which a large amount of cash will be given, how are you able to tell if its real or not? If I gave it to a bank to put into my account, would they be able to check if its real or not at the time, or would they put it straight through. Similarly, if I put money through the machines, would it pick up notes as fake?

I'm not planning on dealing with fake money, but I'm worried about being given counterfeit money as (this is theoretically btw) I wouldn't be using an agency to protect myself against this, and I don't want to be scammed, or arrested on suspicion of trying to circulate fake money. Advice would be nice please xX

Anybody tried freelance jobs like working from home? I can see that some of my friends work on sites like http://freelancer.co.uk or http://www.essaly.com
I think it is quite good if students with particular set of skills such as coding experience, making websites or even doing social media marketing should work freelance to earn extra money...
anybody had any such experience? wanna share?

it'll mostly be boring stuff like toiletries, laundry (my halls change a fortune for this...), travel, and then money spent on socialising. i think it varies depending on your lifestyle and situation though really - like if you're living in a city centre where you have everything on your doorstep, you won't really need to use public transport, however i study in london so i allow a lot for travel. as far as socialising goes just think about whether you like to go out clubbing much, how much you usually spend, etc.
i think it's best to see how you get on and adjust your budget accordingly, though this could mean ending up working part time or cutting back on certain things depending on how much loan/grant you get.

Make sure you actually have that overdraft arranged - you still have to activate the overdraft even if it comes advertised with your account. The 0% APR means your overdraft is interest free so you won't get charged to use it. Because of this I've been looking to rent all inclusive properties, only my ignorance on the subject has led me to wonder whether I'm actually saving money or paying extra for convenience?
Looking for all inclusive also really narrows my choices. I think I should have maybe already sorted accommodation by now but time's gone so quick! Can I jump in and ask a couple of quesrions?
which products should I go for? I'm thinking of investing less than £1k to see what the returns would be. Also what quantities would be the norm for a trial run?
i have researched some products on Alibaba and Aliexpress and found similar prices on eBay. I.e. no margins to be made if china is selling directly to the end customer.
i want to go a bit further thou as I think sell on the net is the way forward not sure what to sell thou.
any help / ideas :)

I suggest doing a bit of market research to find out what people want. Take a look around local buy and sells on facebook etc and see what sells and what doesn't, for example, those electric cigarettes seem to be the biggest craze at the moment, there could be quite a bit of profit in those or go one step further and personalize them to make you different from everyone else.

Be careful on alibaba, i have heard a lot of horror stories from it! lol. I have personal experience with dhgate and their items came in mint condition, no complaints so far (apart from the long deliveries from hong kong, ah well, it's free)

Ebay is a highly competitive market, i would recommend starting your own website and starting small. Grab an e-commerce site and start selling things locally on buy and sells / boot sales / markets etc. It's hard if not impossible to compete with the power sellers on ebay since they can lower their prices due to paying lower fees. You have to consider sellers fees and paypal fees on top of your price with ebay.

One more thing, DO NOT SPEND 1K ON STOCK! business is all about trial and error, start small and grab a few random pieces to see what works for you!

Hi,
I've been on JSA for 3 months now (with a break of 1 month) and on Housing benefit since 2 weeks.

I've just got accepted for a graduate job starting mid-June, so I'll have to cancel my JSA and contact the Council regarding the housing benefit.

It says on the council website that you could still get housing benefits even if you've got a job but the 2 conditions are:

1-Savings less than £6K, which is clearly the case, I've got none:D

2-A low income.

So my question is, how do they determine a low income? it's very vague and London rents are insane, so I won't be able to pay my current rent on my own. That's why I need to see if I can get help.

Thanks for any info guys!

Hi, hope I can be of some help. I am currently on a low income (around £400 a month) and receiving housing benefit. After I graduated and before I got my job I was on JSA and receiving full housing benefit. I had to take my first two months payslips into the council in order for them to see what my earnings where. Each council sets it's own local housing allowance which is what they think is a fair amount for rent for a certain number of bedrooms in the area. They use this allowance and take into consideration your earnings to decide how much you will be entitled to. (How they actually work this out I don't know). The local housing allowance will be more in London than where I live though. I currently get £88 every 4 weeks in housing benefit whilst earning what I do each month. Your local council website should have an online benefit calculator you can use which will enable you to see what you may be entitled to.

If there's already a thread with the specific information I'm after please feel free to signpost me in the right direction.

I'm 22 but class myself quite rightly as an independent students- financially independent for the last 4.5 years but since only two of these were working the other two I was in education I haven't got a leg to stand on as far as NHS bursaries are concerned since my Mother simply won't pay what the NHS ask her to. Now I'm planning to move in with my partner (as a married couple/cohabiting) but would this then mean that both his AND my mothers income would be added together to assess my bursary claim or would it only be his?

Thanks in advance

Do you have an overdraft you can use?
Definitely go to your university advice centre, they have money put aside for things like this and can either give you a loan or grant. I would advise against taking out any kind of bank loan considering your income is so low. Other than that, you could ask your letting agent for an extension. Not all would agree but I know mine let my housemate pay 2 or 3 months late so that he could wait for his next loan instalment.

In the UK, you can still get share certificates (for free) if the shares are in your name rather than in the broker's name :p . It costs around £20 to buy shares in your own name, but it means the shares are yours, and you don't need to pay monthly fees to the broker any more. You can even sell your shares on directly without commission (if you can personally find somebody to buy them off you).

I'm not too keen in day-trading, trying to make money etc - it's more of a casino environment. I'd prefer to just buy a share or two, keep them for a few years, and thus be part of a company as it rises (or falls). It's not about the money, it's about the experience, I'd say. :U

And penny stocks... why bother when proper companies like M&S are just a fiver? ;)

What this fellow said basically.

I also found the problem in trading in stocks especially through agents is they charge a hefty premium for the privilige, lloyds does £15 per trade so unless youre bulk buying or what have you it maskes it a little harder.

Maybe I should be minding my own business, but the gambling industry is fully aware of people doing this, and they don't seem to mind: (quote from the Telegraph - copy it into google if you like)

Graham Sharpe, from William Hill, says the industry does not have a problem with matched betting. "There's no illegal element," he says. "It's a free bet and you can do what you like."

I think some percentage of people trying this - as with free bets in general - are going to end up getting addicted, regardless of how much self-discipline they think they have. If the average free bet is 25£ (so your matched betting profit is likewise £25) and the average gambling addict loses hundreds or thousands of pounds, then you can see why the industry doesn't mind this happening.

This is a marketing scheme like any other, and they are fully aware of what people will do. Just like a five-year-old who thinks he managed to get a free balloon out of McDonalds, when in fact all they're doing is giving McDonalds free advertising.

I came up with the matched betting idea myself a while back, before I saw all this hype on the web, and I did the maths and everything and worked out how to consistently win using these bets. But the reason I decided against it was that the risk is too high - even a 1 in 20 chance of ending up as a gambling addict is far too high in my opinion, since the free bet is only £20 or so but the losses of a gambling addict will climb into the thousands of pounds.

I was going to write about the maths that I had worked out, but frankly, I think it would do more harm than good. I hope that those parading this matched betting will have a little think and understand.

Apologies for the essay long post; thank you if you take the time to read through it.

I’m 21 and have been working full time on and off (but usually on) since I left sixth form. I decided to apply to university at the last minute this year and amazingly got myself a place to study what I hope will lead me into a lifelong career. Despite being ecstatic and desperate to get started, I have this huge worry looming over me.

Money. I’ve always been concerned about it. My ideal is that by the time I’m in my late 20’s I would like to have had enough money for my perfect wedding, and have bought a flat/house. So I started a thread a couple of weeks ago asking the lovely people of TSR, at the age of 22 how much in savings they will or would realistically like to have; to figure out whether the amount I’ll have before starting my course in September was a good amount or not. Quite a few people said they would only just be finishing uni so would have very little or nothing at all, but those that mentioned they had been working prior to this age were looking to have £15,000 - £20,000 saved. Sadly, I wasn’t planning on having anywhere near as much as this saved, more like around £7,000. My course isn’t one that is going to allow me to work very much, if at all; so it’s not as if I can continue saving throughout uni, and my family aren’t in a position to surprise me with a nice lump sum to help me out – I’m pretty much on my own with this.

But leaving my £7,000 in an ISA to earn not much interest doesn’t seem like a useful thing to do with my money while I don’t need to access it. I’ve been looking through the suggestions on money making/investment threads on TSR and wasn’t exactly surprised not to find anything that didn’t take a lot of knowledge and patience to make a decent return – two things the rest of my life doesn’t leave a lot of room for. Then I remembered something that I said to my partner the other week:

“It’s a shame we didn’t save up more money before I start uni, then we could have bought a property, rented it out for the next 3 years and had someone else start paying off our mortgage.”

I have a bit of background knowledge of letting and to me, this kills two birds with one stone. It means that my money would be doing something useful for me whilst I wasn’t using it (and maybe even turning out a tiny bit of profit) rather than just decreasing in value over time, and the property would be there waiting for us at the end of my course with a smaller mortgage than we started with. But of course £7,000 isn’t going to buy me a house, so I was thinking of deferring my place at uni till September 2014 and working my socks off between now and then to earn enough for a deposit.

What would be your view on this; financially, practically, etc? Obviously not a lot of people will have actual experience, but just general thoughts would be appreciated, or advice if you do would be even better.

Thanks very much! :)

TL;DR – Should I defer a place at uni to earn enough money for a buy-to-let property?

Before you can get a mortgage you need a good credit rating.

For example have you had a CC or an overdraft?

Of course if used well they can be good- ie if you pay your credit card off in full every month you pay no interest!

Hi guys,

I am currently promoting a site...

Hi guys,

I am currently promoting a site called fixtheodds around uni and on forums.
It guarantees money through something called match betting (wiki it if you want!).

The amount you can make is limited by the amount of freebets anyone is entitled too but for me i made £700, some have made more most make just under £500.
Money going through the site is risk free as site refunds you if there's a cock up.

It always sounds to good to be true and people think its a scam which is why i've included two articles below from FHM and the telegraph to demonstrate its legit. Currently over 10k people have used it...majority students!

You can sign up via the link below, use referral code 16520.
-----
It works through free bets. We've all seen the offers of £50 free bet ect around towns and the tele. To get these bets you need to place a qualifying bet first. Traditionally you may loose this bet and the free one therefore losing all you money. What this site does is finds odds you you so you can bet for and against a match. When you do this you win on either outcome which pretty much evens out your return (you make a couple quid loss on first bet due to commission). You do this again with the free bet and you win the value of the free bet minus a couple quid commission and the first commission. So may look like: gamble £50, win either way, loose £2. Gamble with free bet, win £48 either way. win £46 overall just have to withdraw it!

If signing up or recommending to people please use referral 16520, if you do this I'll be tied to your account as a fixtheodds ambassador and you can contact me if there are any Qs!

Ok so I'm currently interrupting because I wanted to change my course. That means I've taken a year out of university between my first and second year to kind of re-evaluate and decide what I really want to study. It's not the same as a placement year... I basically just stop being a student and then carry on as if nothing happened in September.

most people go home to their family when they do this but I've decided to stay in my student house. I'm setting up a business which will fully launch in September so I need to spend a lot of time here.

I only interrupted in December so somehow got the first and second terms loans. I only get the minimum though so quickly used up my overdraft as well. Then everything went through in march and they haven't given me a third term loan. Now I'm £1500 in debt, no income, no savings, and I'm worried that Lloyds will notice my third loan hasn't come in and start fining/charging interest on my overdraft as I'm not officially a student.

please help, what do I do about my overdraft? I'm scared to talk it through with my bank because I'm worried once they find out I'm not a student this year they will want all their money back...

Im now desperately applying for jobs (I know I should have done it ages ago...) but I've got 3 more months to pay of my rent and I'm setting up a business which is going to cost me a fair bit. The Uni has an entrepreneur loan system but I can't access it until I re register in September which will be too late.

I'm now relying on the business making enough money in the first week otherwise I'm not going to be able to afford to continue university.

Why don't you get a bailout from your parents?

I think Lloyds are a nice bank- at least to me!
Get a job asap

Can't you contact the uni and maybe get a hardship loan?

Okay so I graduate this year and I need opinions on what I should do after graduation.

Background info: I live in a small town where I won't be able to get a suitable job, I also wouldn't be able to find a good job in the nearest city (I do a language degree). I also haven't learnt to drive yet so wouldn't be able to drive to a further city to work. I also REALLY want to travel for like 4 months.

Now my dilemma is ... what should I save for first?

If I save to move (to London for example) to find a good job I won't need to drive as there's the tube but it also means I'll learn to drive at a late age ... I also wouldn't have any money left over to travel as London living costs are expensive. Or if I moved to another city I wouldn't be able to travel as I'd be paying rent.

If I save to travel I won't be able to afford to move out until I come back and find a job and then earn enough money. Plus I'd have to save money to travel before I go so that means not being able to move out for like 2 years roughly and therefore not being able to find a great job.

If I save to drive It'll take me longer to save to do anything else (travel or move out) and then if I find a job in London etc anyway I wouldn't need the driving skills/a car.

I know I don't need to decide entirely right now but I was wondering if anyone has opinions/advice? Maybe some of you have been/are in a similar situation? :)

I'd say learn to drive as early/cheaply as you can and travel later-when your finances are sorted

I've been with lloyds for 5 years, no problems.
I got a letter through the other day saying they were going to automatically update my under 19s account to a student account, and I would have to sign to request for them to not do that, what annoyed me a little bit because I feel pushed into going into their student account when I haven't properly looked around.

I have seen what seems best is the biggest 0% over draft limits? I'm really reluctant to get into a massive overdraft whilst at uni and believe I will be financially ok, so just looking for some advice, is Lloyds an OK student account even though it hasn't got the largest 0% over draft limit?
Any advice would be amazing!

Hi,

Just a quick question regarding credit cards. Has anyone exchanged currency with a credit card in say the post office? If so is this kind of transaction regarded as being similar to withdrawing money from an atm, where there is often charges or interest applied to the withdrawal of money from an atm?

Thanks in advance!

This would be the same as withdrawing cash from an ATM afaik. I'd just use a debit card tbh, or better get the cash out, and exchange it. I remember that some cards charge? So if you take the cash out first, you're not going to get charged

Or of course, get a top travel card

Yeah, you have to be careful with paypal. My boyfriend sold a digital copy of Black Ops to someone over it and then two days later the other party charged back the thirty-odd pounds claiming they'd never received any item. He'd already spent it however and, as they're not allowed to take money directly from his bank, his account has been banned for not 'rectifying the balance'. Such a joke - we sent them the chat logs and everything and it even says on the payment note 'Digital game Black Ops 2'.

The reason they'd stop both accounts in the same household is probably because he could attempt to use yours. Have you actually asked your brother what he's done to get the accounts suspended? Unless he sorts the issue out you may just be unable to use the service. :(

Too true, paypal always sides with the buyer, no matter what.

A friend of mine sold a motorbike on ebay, total price was just under £3,000 with the sale being done as £1000 deposit paid through paypal upon winning the auction and the rest in cash upon collection of the bike.

The bike was in the exact same condition as in the advert, arguably looking even nicer when it was bought than when it was listed, and the guy was perfectly happy with it when he completed the sale.

A few days later he complained to paypal saying that what he had bought didn't match the description, they took the £1,000 back off my mate, and sided with the buyer over it. He did eventually get the money back, but it took him well over 6 months before paypal finally gave it to him.

They can be an absolute joke.

Hey, I worry about money too. It's not good. I have an interest free overdraft of 1,500 which due to my bad spending habits, I managed to use up. So now I'm in debt to the bank, plus other things... which equate to around 2500 in total. I do plan to get out of my overdraft so I can concentrate on my other debts, but being so far into it, I can't see much of a way out for a long time :(

The only sensible way out I can see is if I work about 5 or 6 days a week over the summer, and limit my spending (something that has proven very difficult so far). Either way, thinking about it is very stressful. Once you're in, it's hard to get back out.

Does anyone know if the Lloyds Scholarship accepts Access Courses and if so what would the grade requirements be?
I have almost met my conditions to get into Bristol Uni, and by the same my course finishes I should be getting over 45 distinctions. It would be unfair IMO if access courses are not accepted.

I am with HSBC, yes they gave me a credit card but I don't use it, I only ever wanted a debit card. But HSBC are really terrible, I got offered up to £3000 overdraft but they started me at £750, I am now in second year and they have refused on several occasions to extend the overdraft at all...so much for up to £3000! They failed to provide a particular reason, just a general 'you don't meet our criteria' which means nothing! I wish I could somehow switch as all my housemates and boyfriend are with different banks and had their overdrafts raised in second year....not me! They have even charged me for rent going out on the same day as I got paid because they processed the rent going out first. FML!

Hey.

To set your mind at rest, I did an access course this year and half the intake has been on JSA at some point in the year, because everyone's on crap part-time work because the course is so intensive. I'm surprised college hasn't told you this already, but these courses are designed to come in under the 16 hours p/w cut-off for benefits, to enable people to improve their position.

Tell college you can't do more hours than that, and they'll let you drop inessential modules (like core IT, which is only level 2 anyway so not that useful for higher uni offers) or excuse you from some classes to get in under the legal limit. They'll also help you work your classes around when you have to sign on (fit everything into 2 1/2 days if you can, then you can still work or whatever the rest of the week). Tell the jobcentre as soon as you have your learner agreement so they don't get on your back about it. Be careful to evidence that you're looking for work properly or they'll claim you're not trying hard enough and kick you off it, but it's entirely possible to do both at once.

Don't worry, it shouldn't be a problem :)

Thanks so much for that. I don't want to have to claim but I have no other option I apply and apply to get nowhere. Education is my route out if this situation but I will need to finance it. I intend to and still am looking fir work so I'm hoping all will be well :)

LOL @ 2nd post! Bankruptcy takes quite a bit...

LOL @ 2nd post! Bankruptcy takes quite a bit longer than one missed payment, and with an overdraft available it won't be missed anyway.

To the OP - your overdraft will be used. Should be completely automatic with a direct debit in place. The bank are very unlikely to cancel an overdraft without warning, although they could if they wanted to. Overdrafts are repayable on demand.

More likely if you go for a while (say 3 months) with no significant money coming into the account, they might review it and send you a warning letter. If you go into the overdraft every month but then come back out (because you get paid) it can probably go on like that forever.

Any interest due for using the overdraft will also be deducted from it, usually at the start of the next month.

Of course they wouldn't levy the OPs vehicle, but the person that owes the money... what they would do is a DVLA check on any vehicle nearby.... if they could get a match even as a registered keeper/user they would of course levy. So if you even let your friend use the car etc.... not advisable there are way for successful traces. A bailiff is going to be as resourceful as possible..... true say, about the third statement, but they will firstly try to stick in a "pay as you go meter".

You've completely lost me with the first half of this post.

Not sure what you mean by "so if you even let your friend use the vehicle"?

It reads as though you're implying that if the OP allows her indebted flatmate to use the OP's car, then the OP's car can be seized? Which is, of course, complete nonsense. If the OP owns a car, then she would be the 'registered keeper' of that car and the bailiffs couldn't touch it irrespective of whether the indebted flatmate also used the car. There's no such thing as a 'registered user'.

Somebody earlier mentioned the concept of a 'deemed contract' making the OP jointly and severally liable. This is a very good point, but only applies in certain circumstances. It will only apply if, when the OP and her flatmate moved in, they did not change energy suppliers and stayed on the existing tariff. If that's the case, then the OP can be pursued for the entire debt. However, if they changed energy supplier, or if they switched to a new contract with the existing supplier, then only the OP's flatmate is liable (assuming it's only the OP's flatmate named on the bill)

Aspects of the Companies Act 2006 would need to be considered (particularly in more complicated M&A transactions involving things like issuing shares) and the Listing Rules/Takeover Code would need to be considered if we are talking about public companies, but these are regulatory issues rather than contractual issues.

There's no equivalent of Student Finance for a...

There's no equivalent of Student Finance for a Masters, so generally as above, it's funded from savings or loans from various sources.

You can compete for funding from the body which looks after funding for your field - for my field, it's the AHRC (Arts & Humanities Research Council). However these are insanely competitive and very difficult to win. It's usually easier to apply to a uni which controls its own Block Grant from a body like this, as you'll only be competing with other applicants to that uni. Even then, "easier" is a relative term. Occasionally a uni will offer scholarships to cover fees, but again, these are competitive.

Some science-based funded PhDs come as 4 year deals, where your first year is effectively your Masters. In this case, your Masters is funded as part of the course. Although again, these are highly competitive.

Hi,

I am bad spender and I went into the bank to extend my overdraft on my student account. When I was there I was asked whether I wanted a student credit card (even though he could see how bad my spending was). Whilst there he tried talking it up saying that it would improve my credit rating he tried for ages and I kept saying no in the end he asked why? I said I don't trust myself, he laughed and said he hadn't heard that one before. Anyone else had there bank try this one on them?

Never ever use a Credit card dear .... the only reason they gave you a credit card is to make you more in debt , I have looked @ your profile and it seems that you already have financial problems. Be careful , credit cards my seem and look good , but eventually , you will regret it.

HSBC have always been good for me. They usually have good interest for saving and a very good online banking and support system.
Quite a few people use the same bank as their family so that transfers can be completed within minutes rather than hours or days between two different banks.

To be honest it depends on what branches are near to where you live, whether you want a savings account or one that you can just dip in and out of. Comparing interest rates is always a good starting point.

Look, your stance is that you want to make money out of poor people, and make them worse off. You feel guilty about it, though, since it's clearly an immoral thing to do, so you don't want to admit it and also try to make yourself feel better by saying that everybody else does it so it's okay.

That, or you're trying to play Devil's advocate but rather than actually take a stance you just quibble over small details and insist the obvious be spelled out.
