Accommodation - age discrimination?

As I am currently applying for university...

As I am currently applying for university accommodation to start in September, I was worrying if anybody else has come across a ban on applying to undergrad accommodation due to their age?

I have come across a number of universities who advise their mature students that undergrad accommodation may not be the best for them, but they certainly don't have a blanket ban on them applying....The university that I want to go to has some ideal accommodation for undergrads (I am an undergrad BTW) but I have been told that because I am over 25, they wouldn't consider me and that I would have to move into Postgrad accommodation instead....Is this not blatant discrimination solely on the grounds of my age?

If I am an undergraduate and I am paying the same fees as all the other undergrads, then surely I should have the same opportunities that they have? Why should I have what I feel should be a fundamental part of the student experience (namely associating with my fellow students) denied to me on the grounds of my age? Not to mention that the postgrad accommodation doesn't offer the things that I want (and am willing to pay extra for) such as an ensuite and car parking etc.

I am seriously thinking of making a complaint about this but I am really not sure that I want to be seen to be making trouble or how much good it will do? :(

Stop being terrified. I've gone from being...

Stop being terrified. I've gone from being youngest, studying with people up to twice my age, to being up to twice as older as my fellow students. Even after finishing studying I still have friends who are half my age and friends who are now retired. Strangely enough when I invite them to a party, they usually all get on, even if the only thing they have in common is knowing me. I learn from them and they have learnt stuff from me, despite our different life experiences. But I am open to getting on with people, I don't mind if they don't share the same life experience and I don't assume that my life experience is superior to anyone else's, it is just different.

Even if you have people the same age, those who come from overseas or have travelled more widely may have a significantly different outlook than someone who has lived in the same place the entire time and then gone to work for some years. Just don't fall into the trap of thinking that everyone else knows so much more, they just might be better at putting on a confident front.

Anyway, make your return to study easier by actually preparing to study. Get the reading list, find out what text books will be used on the course. You may be able to borrow them from the library or buy them cheaply second hand on eBay or amazon. Don't just get the books, read them. Anything you don't understand, make a note of it and ask when you get to that part on the course. Once you have the timetable, find out where your classes are and aim to arrive 10 minutes early. Checking you are in the right place with a fellow student is an easy ice breaker.

Hi everyone.

I just registered my interest in Gateshead College's full-time HEFC to start in September.

I wasn't even aware of Access courses until I hit a wall last year when applying to Uni - it had been just over 5 years since I received my HND and so I was told this would be required if I wanted to go back to study...

I was hoping to hear from any of you who've already done the course or are starting in September...

I've gathered from reading around that the course can get quite intensive as it's essentially like doing A-Levels in the space of one year, but do you know what the general weekly hours are you spend at college? I ask because I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to manage for a year financially - I know student loans etc. aren't applicable for this, so I'll need to work part-time while studying... How did you/will you manage?!

On a less serious note, what do you guys find the general ages are on this course? I'm going to be 27 when I start and as silly as it sounds, it's a little daunting to think I'll be the oldest on the course!!!

Any advice appreciated.

Andrew.

When I did my course I was the youngest at 21. There were people from 21 - 50 on my course.

My course was three days per week, 9:30 - 2:30. I worked evenings and weekends, some people I know worked night shifts as it pays more so you can work less hours.

Be aware that as you have a HND, you won't get full funding for a new degree. As you'll have an equivalent qualification.

Hello.

I have a few questions, that if anyone can answer I would be very Grateful!

Abit of a read, but i need to get it clear.

So I have lived on my own since I was 16 (now 23) and with my partner for the last 5 years.

When applying for student loans/grants will this mean anything?

I am willing to work part time for money, but I need to know if im going to be able to get enough loans and grants to cover my basics (rent/living) etc.

My partner does work, but only 15 hours a week, so not enough to support us.

I will be applying at stoke but live in wolverhampton.

I left school with nothing, literally nothing. But since, I have had lots of jobs, current job im in. i have been here for 2+ years and its in the same area as the course im applying for. I have my english and maths GCSE's at C - and level 2's that are equvilant also. I have multitude of other grades for specific courses - branches of IT - Like Design, Office etc...

I have 2 level 2 Btech qualifications - Lots of units in each, passed with either a merit or distinction. I am just finishing on my Level 3 course - So Uni is level4.

Do I stand a chance at actually achieveing this? Im going to the open day tomorrow, So will hopefully get to speak to the tutor, but its not 100%.

They said on the phone everyone is assessed on there experience/background, Being a Mature student would my work background and personal statement be my best shot?

Thanks!

With regards to funding they will take in to account your income and your partners income, as well as benefits etc. It's likely you'll get the full amount though.

If you're applying for a course which is somehow linked to these smaller certificates etc they will help. If not, then they won't help much tbh.

Your personal statement, and experience in the field you want to study is what is more likely to help you, as well as completing your level 3 course (if the uni accept it as an entry requirement).

Hello everyone

I'm Ruth, I'm 24 and planning to apply for nursing to start Sept 2014, I'm currently deciding my best route.

I've worked in business for the past 6 years (mainly IT systems but also stints in insurance and finance) so it's going to be a huge change for me! I applied to study English when I was 18 but changed my mind at the last minute and got a job instead so it's a very scary (but exciting) prospect to go back to university now.

It's a huge relief to see so many students in their 30s (or older) on here as I've been worrying that I'll be old at 25!

I really cant wait to get started and finally spread my wings a little :)

Thank you all so much for getting back to me, it's been really really helpful.

I think I'm going to look into doing an access course. I've had a glance through the syllabus and I dont think there's anything I should struggle with too much so I feel quite confident that I can do it. I spoke to one of the providers and they said expect between 10-15 hours per week, which I can probably just about manage (I also normally find that I work quite quickly so hopefully it shouldnt take quite as long as that).

Now my issue is funding! I HAVE to do distance learning because of my work schedule and the Distance Learning Centre doesnt currently accept the 24+ loan.

Hi, I'm 39 and hoping to get on to Access to Health in September as I want to change careers from teaching and get into health! I don't have any science in my background so am excited and nervous ha ha about that!! :$ Re tuition fee funding for mature students... - I slip through the gap in that I don't qualify for a tuition fee loan as did a degree after school which is tough as there's a degree locally that would give me practical experience into working in health. So am applying for the 24+ advanced learning loan for the access and maybe go further afield/look at NHS funded degrees in future...I have two kids so will be a tough but gotta make the change! Anyone else in the same boat re career change/kids/funding?? x

Hello Kathryn,
I just joined the Student Room, read your post and felt I should say hi as i'm in a very similar situation.
I am 40 and a single mum of 5 children and definately in need of a change, having worked as a dental nurse for 19 years and raising a family, it is now or never!!!!
Im also going to apply for the 24+ learning loan so fingers crossed but it all seems such a minefield at the moment but im sure all will become apparent!!
Anyway all the best to you and I was glad to see there was someone in a similar situation.

Here is the Student Finance page with relevant...

Here is the Student Finance page with relevant info on eligibility. You are eligible. I imagine that your level of maintenance support will be based on an assessment of household income (as if you are your partner were your own parents) - http://sfengland.slc.co.uk/full-time....aspx#your-age

As for your application - if you have relevant experience then it definitely needs to be part of your personal statement. Your tenacity in leaving school without many qualifications, and then gaining qualifications since, ought to count in your favour.

HOWEVER - don't harp on too much about being a mature student. You will feel much older than 18 year olds, but you are still pretty young really (tutors won't see a massive difference between 18 year olds and 23 years). So - make as much of it as you can as long as it's relevant, but don't overdo it.

Hi again,

Not sure if I can post a follow up...

Hi again,

Not sure if I can post a follow up question? But I have contacted the university and received my transcript. I have a total of 225 credits, just 15 short of graduating and obtaining my foundation degree.

Would 225 credits be enough to be awarded a Diploma of Higher Education? With regards to Dip HE, if I were to be awared one, would that be enought to get myself on to a top up degree course?

I know it is highly unlikely but does anyone know if after this amount of time there would be any options to try and gain the remaining 15 credits?

Once again thank you for your previous responses, I have been feeling a bit lost in my current line of employment and feel I need to do something about it.
I'm 19 years old and did go to uni for a bit but thought the course wasn't for me and this was specialising in media.. I decided to take a gap year out but am confident that in future sometime I would want to go back to uni. My question is if want to specialise in business or IT, would an access course be best so am more acceptable to do a course like this for uni?? Or does my level 3 course that I did (got an equivalent of AAB) be alright?? I also got 13 A*-C grades in gcses too...

Hi,

Please forgive me if this thread is in the wrong section, but I have a problem that I need some help with. I'm currently 21 years old and I'm interested in going to University, I've done a lot of research and I've found a degree that I'm really interested in. I have the right A level grades, well the equivalent (BTEC national diploma at Distinction - Distinction - Merit), however I cannot say the same for my GCSE's.

The University requires C+ in both GCSE Maths and English, my Maths grade is atrocious and I have a D in English and a C in English Literature. Does anyone know how I can improve my Maths and retake the GCSE exam? I just can't seem to find the right path, and I don't where to start.

Also would I need to retake my English GCSE as well? I'm not sure if the University would let me in with a D in English and a C in English Literature.

Thanks for the help,

Markus.

OP if I've read correctly you are considering an...

OP if I've read correctly you are considering an international foundation course in Canada, at an institution that is not affliated with King's College London (a member of the University of London). But you want to study in the UK.

You could consider an international foundation course in the UK at one of the reputable universities you are interested in. You should ask is if the Foundation course offers direct entry into the Law course at the same institution upon successful completion of the course. If it does and it meets your criteria for a reputable UK university, then this your best option. You should get a feel for the level of work that the university expects and it should make for an easier transistion to the degree if the course is structured correctly. Check also which other universities are available to you on completing the foundation course. Sometimes the international foundation year is done in conjunction with other universities and will allow you entry to their courses as well if you decide you would rather study elsewhere on completion.

With an access course, you have to factor in time to apply to various universities, attend interviews as required alongside meeting the demands of the access course. There is no gurantee that you will be offered a place on a course, there is more than one exam board for Access courses, so you have to check if it has sufficient content at level 3, the more level 3 distinctions you can gain the better. Are you proposing to do the Access course via the OU, in which case their structure is slightly different to the one done in Further Education Colleges in the UK?

You might get a more definitive response if you e-mail the admissions tutor with details of the qualification you want to take and give your existing qualifications. If you are mature (over 21) with relevant work experience, there can be some flexibility. However since you want to study Law, it can be very competative.

For international students from North America, most reputable universities will consider AP results, they want at least 3 in relevant subjects, usually they ask for 5, on less popular courses lower grades might be acceptable. You can demonstrate recent study with you OU course.

I reckon at least 10% of my course is over 28. ...

I reckon at least 10% of my course is over 28.
It is actually quite hard to 'age' people, I've been surprised a number of times at finding out another student was older or younger than I thought. I'm pretty sure that at 25 you'll not stand out in a nursing degree.
I think 'being rusty' is an excuse that people use in advance for in case they don't do well. Most of the A'level students will have had four months off from studying and routine so they are just as 'rusty', maybe more so if they haven't had to spend the summer waking up to the alarm and getting themselves to work everyday.
You don't have to eat pasta bake everyday. Save as much as you can while you are working and stock up on things when you see them on special offer. There are loads of ways to stretch your money. With a bit of planning and by ditching brand snobbery you can eat really well on very little. Maybe you'll also be able to work part-time as well. Have a look at the NHS jobs website, there are loads of bank (flexible) jobs advertised at the moment. There might also be additional bursary funds for you as a mature student on a low income.

Your fears are quite normal though. There are always lots of reasons to not do something that takes us out of our comfort zones but you have to consider what you future holds if you don't do it.

If there website doesn't say anything then surely you won't need them. If you're still concerned though maybe ring their admissions number, they'll tell you or put you through to someone who can tell you the exact requirements. Some unis prefer the Access course to contain specific modules or 24 credits at distinction etc, they'll be able to tell you if they have any Access course specific requirements.

When I left school at 16 and went to study A levels, I spent the year getting kicked out and eating, socialising more than wanting to study.

Dropped out, still living in parents house and messing around.

Left home, grew up and realised the world isn't a pretty thing and that those who do not work hard will not end up where they wish to be.

Don't live under the roof of parents, worked minimum wage jobs for the past 5-6 years, never having anything consistent or something to promote/move on to.

Started an Access course at the age of 23, and working my butt off. Already achieved 8 units at Distinction and 3 units at Merit and still not finished the course.

What am I going to tell the 18/19 year olds this September in University? One thing I have more than them? Life Experience !

Well my mind changes by the hour regarding accom, but I keep coming back to three places, Hawthorns, Winkworth and Richmond Terrace. I know halls have their disadvantages but at least you know to expect them (loud music, people not keeping the kitchen clean etc), plus I can sleep through anything! I can see where your coming from with houses for mature students, my only fear would be that it takes just one person to make the whole house an uncomfortable living environment. I think I would prefer to get to know people first.

We can put on the application what’s most important to us. I will just ask to be put with other Mature Students, that's if there are any other MS who make the same selections, the rest is up to chance. Lol....

Just got the email. Damnnnn. I think I know what glitch they're on about, I spoke to Jon about it around a week after I made my application I went onto the site and it gave me the option to 'Continue with incomplete application' as if I hadn't applied already. But I did because I got the confirmation email through instantly after I clicked 'apply'. I emailed the Accommodation Office and they said it'd been flagged as a problem and then asked me to FWD the confirmation email just to show I wasn't making it up I assume. And thats the last I heard. So I assume it may have something to do with that?

Lauren, I recommend applying ASAP to make sure you get the accommodation you want. :)

Don't think you'd need to BUY any books tbh.

When I did my access course I barely used any books! You'd obviously need to buy the books that you're covering in English. But apart from that you don't need to buy any.

I suppose if you really want to do some reading, find out which subjects you'll be doing and by some AS / A Level books in that subject.

Have you had your results yet? I did my graded unit today and I think I'm on the same boat. Although I do have a resit in June if I failed.

I e-mailed the SQA asking them the same question you've asked on here, this is their answer:

"Please be advised that if you fail your Graded unit you will receive a
certificate with the units that you have successfully passed.

Once you have passed the graded unit you will be certificated for the whole
I e-mailed them and asked them how I'd be able to sit the exam again independently after college is done and they said this:
Please be advised that in order for you to complete your graded unit you
will have to be registered and presented by an SQA approved centre
The SQA has no input to the way in which centres (schools/colleges/training
providers) present qualifications, therefore please contact the centre in
which you wish to study to discuss the options available."

hi , I have today attended my college...

hi , I have today attended my college appointment where we had to do literacy and numeracy test. Firstly we were given 1 hour in which to write a letter to the head of access explaining why we want to be on the course.then next we had to answer three questions based on a written article. all of this to be completed within the first hour. next we had the literacy and numeracy tests on the computer. i went into these test today believing that nothing too taxing was going to be asked and was just a basic assesment ,how wrong I was it was quite difficult. after reading some posts on here and other sites people seem to be playing down the difficulty of these tests. i can say now that the tests i took today were more difficult than i thought they would be. i would advise anyone who is to sit these tests wherever it may be to prepare yourself a little for your own sanity as there is nothing worse than being under prepared and wishing you studied a bit. even though they say that we are not being judged on the results it would be naive to think that everyone will get on course with limited spaces they will quite obviously chose the people who score the best. its worked out o.k for me today as i got level 1 in numeracy and level 3 in literacy which apparently are good scores! i just wished id done some revision before. :)

The above poster has given you some good advice. However, to add my own two cents in - have you considered doing an apprenticeship? At 22 it's not too late as the cut off age is 25 :).
It's just another options for you.

You could also study for A levels through distance learning through somewhere like oxford college, and the open university to undergrad courses that may be helpful to look into

There's a few options...

Have you looked into...

There's a few options...

Have you looked into doing an access course? I don't know too much about them, but I believe they're one-year courses at the start of a full degree designed for people who don't have traditional grades.

Local colleges might offer evening or weekend A Level courses you can look into. Obviously I don't know anything about your area, but there's a few colleges that do that round where I am, maybe there's some where you are as well?

You could also homeschool A Levels and apply to university with those. I'm doing that right now - I left school when I was about 14 due to health issues and still haven't gone back (I'm 20 now). A Levels acquired through self-study are just as valid as those acquired through a school or college, but they can be a bit of a pain to get as most of the administrative framework is structured on the assumption that candidates are at school. 100% exam subjects like maths aren't too difficult, but any course that involves a practical or coursework element becomes an instant headache. It is possible if you're motivated though. It's taken me 2 years to do my A Levels at home, studying most of the time and working part time. I guess if you're really dedicated you could in theory hold down a full time job and do a full 3 A Levels in one year, but 2 or 3 years is more realistic.

You can skip A Levels entirely if you apply for an undergraduate degree at the Open University, which doesn't require traditional grades and will get you a proper degree.

Most of those options don't really fulfill the "hands on/visual learning" qualification, but I'm not aware of anything that caters to mature students who've been out of school for a while that does so.

Hi there,

Whilst not exactly in the same boat...

Hi there,

Whilst not exactly in the same boat as you (I'm 35 and now feeling very old indeed!!!), I recently applied and was interviewed for the MSc (pre registration) physiotherapy course at Birmingham. I made the decision to apply the week before the application deadline and managed to secure a days shadowing at Russell's Hall hospital in Dudley within a week of emailing them. I know it's a bit far afield for you but might be worth a punt.....?

I also managed to get some shadowing with a private physiotherapist, who was really helpful, so I'd have to suggest just keep plugging away and asking lots of private practises. You're sure to come up with a winner eventually.

Well it's nice to hear I'm not the only one worrying about it!

@jessykins I'd stay at my job if I could but as It's a Mon-Fri 9-5 gig that's not going to be possible. At the moment, as I'm wanting to go into Nursing I'm applying for various HCA jobs in the hope that when I do go to college it'll be easier to pick up evening and weekend shifts. If I must work (and I must if I want to eat lol) I'd rather being something in the field I'm interested in but I'd work in ASDA or clean toilets to get through. I just want to start - waiting til Septembers gonna be hard! Such a shame about your college being so far away!

@MissLCM - You're the same as me - I'll do almost any job to earn a living so long as I know there's something at the end of it!

@ Camason - that's my ideal situation really - working evening/weekends/nights around my course in a healthcare related job so I'm getting all that experience too/ I'll to give my other half a photo so he remembers what I look like lol. I'm fully prepared for the course to be intenstive, after years being an admin and phone monkey I'm actually looking forward to it (Wont be saying that when I'm knee deep in essays I'm sure!)

@Niki - I wouldnt worry too much about being benefits - you're using that money to better yourself and get a career - That's amazing! I'd do the same if I was in your situation x

If you've met or are going to meet the requirements in other aspects of the course then I'd recommend you focus most, if not all, of your attention on the subject you're struggling with. That's what I'm doing. I've pretty much met the requirements in all but one subject, so I've actually opted out of the final unit for one of the subjects because I have/will have enough credits from elsewhere allowing me to focus all my attention on the subject I need to get right.

Of course, there is a chance that they will be lenient, especially if you only miss out by a small margin. My advice is to cross that bridge if you come to it. Worrying about it can't be good, so I'd say you should focus on the course for the moment and hopefully you won't have to contemplate what you'll do if you just miss out on 60%.

Hi
I am currently studying a Biology A level,...

Hi
I am currently studying a Biology A level, due to complete this June. Ive done this through 'NEC' which has been excellent( im on traCk to get an A) However I chose them as they have a assigned center in my city, so I knew i could sit exams there. You send your course work to you NEC tutor who sends it off to the exam board.
When i began looking into doing this the main problem i found people were saying was finding someone to sit the exams. Some schools will take external canditates alot wont. So make sure you look into this first.
A level has cost me around £800 in total, paying for NEC course, each exam and course work submission.

Quote;
When I was searching the internet, I did come across a forum where someone stated that one would need to download certain material from the examining body website for each subject?

Im doing edexcel biology. On teh edexcel biology there is a specification, whch tells you everything you need to knwo for the exams. I imagine, each exam board would have the same? Trying searching for 'specification'?

I agree with Lee1710, when it comes to exams, do as many past papers as possible, again and again. You may feel you know the material, but thsi will help you understand the mark scheme.

Good luck!

Unfortunately it is true for the normal 5 year...

Unfortunately it is true for the normal 5 year medical degree. Under the ELQ rules if you already have a degree you are not eligible for funding for the normal 5 year medicine course.

If you choose the accelerated 4 year graduate entry medical course, some funding may be available to you, but you will have to pay £3,465 (applicable for September 2013 entry) in year one, from years 2-4, an NHS busary will apply for the first £3,465. But you have to fund the gap between, your contribution or the busary and the tutition fee. Student finance is available if you qualify, to fund the gap.

If you haven't already had a look, read http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki...cine_-_a_guide and http://bma.org.uk/working-for-change...fees-agreement

If you are not eligible for student finance then and you can't self fund, then saving up is the only route. Professional Career Development Loans are not sufficient to fund the gap since fees went up to 9k and they only cover courses lasting a maximum of 24 months.

Since the introduction of ELQ and the increase in tuition fees, doing a second degree has be become financially unaffordable for most. Unless you are studying for a subject that is really exempt from ELQ which medicine is not.

You also may be better off posting in http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=684

It may also may be necessary to appeal if you think you should be eligible for student finance, but the online system says no.

In another thread OP you mentioned that you gained your first degree in Canada. Since the introduction of student loans in the UK, each year has brought more restrictions on who and what is eligible for funding. But ELQ, introduce in 2009 made things worse. The banks that used offer loans for law and medical studies withdrew from the market and the financial crisis meant no new private providers have entered the market. So you are left with a situation that unless you can self fund and you are based in England the student loan market is limited to SFE. Most of the busaries and grants are only available to students eligible for student finance, so catch 22.

If you have been resident in the UK for at least...

If you have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years for non educational purposes and are not subject to any visa restrictions you may be eligible for student finance for graduate entry medical school. By restrictions I mean things like not eligible for recourse to public funds, which may apply for the first 5 years after being granted leave to remain. This does not apply to other undergraduate courses which are not exempt from ELQ rule, where your Canadian degree would make you ineligible for student finance regardless of your immigration status.

Have a look at http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki...cine_-_a_guide

Graduate entry medicine is very competative and there are not that many study places available in the country. Many candidates miss out despite having a stellar academic background and relevant work experience. Even if you could fund your studies yourself, there are limited places for home and international students.

I havent seen much threads on this so decided to post one. I recently applied to an access course for nursing at harrow college. And went there for a diagnostic test yesterday, there were about 30 something people some young and older. Under 19s were told to leave. It was basic maths test, and an essay question which was called 'write the challenges you may face during the access course and how would you overcome them' and a story which we had to put the paragraphs in order
However I'm in full time employment and I'm hoping to hand in my resignation at the end of July but I'm not sure if I'm entitled to any help I'm a single parent and been saving some money each month for my tuition fees but as it happens cos I'm over 24 I actually get them free iv been looking for part time work over the last few days around 16hrs but I'm getting a bit jittery as il be quoting work on my own accord iv heard a few stories that if I claim JSA then I could have to give up the course and look for full time work again.. But I'm doing this to better myself as currently on minimum wage and can't live on that forever! In five years iv not has a pay rise but I know I can triple my wages when I pass the degree can anyone help any advice would help...

This is quite an old thread and funding arrangements for Access courses have changed substantially since many of the responses were posted. So you might get more responses if you start a new thread.

If you resign from your job, you probably will not be eligible for JSA immediately. Try and find a part time job whilst you are still working. The college where you are planning to do your Access course may have a fund available for students suffering hardship, but because you are coming from employment to study, you may not be eligible. Check if your Access course has sufficient hours that you qualify for exemption from council tax.

Good Luck,

Use of Notebooks: In Writing and Learning

NOTEBOOKS:
GENERAL OVERVIEW OF A LIFETIME OF...

NOTEBOOKS:
GENERAL OVERVIEW OF A LIFETIME OF COLLECTING

In the more than fifty years(1949-2010) that I have gathered my writing into notebooks the writing has fallen into three general categories: (a)school, (b) job and (c)(i)personal, (ii)Baha’i. The first category was created in the years 1949 to 1988 in my primary, secondary and tertiary education and training as well as external studies programs(1973-1988). From the hundreds of notebooks created in the years of category (a) only two remain. From the hundreds created in the dozens of jobs I have had, category (b) the only ones remaining are the approximately 30 files/notebooks from my last job at Thornlie College, notebooks from several of the social sciences and humanities.

The final category of notebooks now in my possession are what I have called personal/Baha'i. They were created not for use in a place of employment, not as a teacher or for a school system. They were created for my own use in my work as a Baha’i or in my personal use as a writer and poet. I have been gathering resources now for forty-five years, 1965-2010, but only seriously for the last twenty-five, 1985-2010. I have been fine-tuning my collection of notebooks in the last ten years, 2000-2010. I now have some 250-300 notebooks covering millions of words and many subjects and topics. These notebooks now serve and will serve as an important part of the base for my many writing projects in these middle years(65-75) of late adulthood(60-80) and old age(80++), if I last that long.

Little did I know when I created my first notebook at the mid-point in the twentieth century that sixty years later notebooks would come to occupy such an important place in my daily life. -Ron Price, Pioneering Over Four Epochs, 15 January 2010.
(300 words)
---------------------------------------------
THE CONCEPT OF NOTEBOOKS

Anselm Hollo in his book The Poet's Notebook: Excerpts from the Notebooks of 26 American Poets(WW Norton and Co., NY, editor, Stephen Kuudisto, et al., 1995) wrote that: "I love reading poets' notebooks. Poets are curious critters, and it is a pleasure to relax with the jottings and musings of such literary practitioners." Many writers and poets, though not all, keep notebooks. This section of my Pioneering Over Four Epochs, section IX, contains information relevant to my notebooks. What readers find here provides a general framework for the many notebooks I have kept over the years.

There are generally two types of notebooks which I use. One is the type wherein I keep notes on a particular subject. I have kept notebooks on a great many subjects which I do not list here, but I list them elsewhere for my own interest and record. Another notebook is the type where I keep quotations on the specialized subject of writing, the literary process: poetry, reading, autobiography, diary/journal keeping and letter writing, inter alia. In this latter category I have a dozen major files and in the former category I have some 300 files. There is material in these notebooks going back to the 1960s, the beginning of my pioneering experience, my experience since leaving the town I was born in and the town in which I grew up; but, for the most part, my notebooks assumed the form they did by degree in and after 1992, as I could see the end of the tunnel of my FT employment and especially after I retired from full-time employment in 1999, part-time work in 2003 and casual-volunteer work in 2005.

I now have some 300+ notebooks covering millions of words and many subjects and topics. These notebooks now serve and will serve as an important part of the base for my many writing projects in these early years of late adulthood(60-80) and old age(80++). I rarely read a book or even part of a book which does not involve some exercise in note-taking, although I must say that many people over the years loan me books that are of little value to me personally and nonote-taking has been involved. I should add, too, that since I gave up teaching English Literature in 1994 I rarley read fiction.

I have been gathering resources now for approximately forty years, 1970-2010, but only seriously for the last twenty, 1990-2010. I have been fine-tuning my collection of notebooks in the last ten years, 2000-2010.

Ron Price
15 January 2010
(300 words)
========================
AN INTRODUCTION TO MY NOTEBOOKS

In his work from day to day Leonard da Vinci concentrated on one thing at a time and, while he concentrated on that one thing, that thing was the most important in the world. Not much got done in the short term because da Vinci seemed interested in everything but, over a lifetime, da Vinci accomplished many great things, albeit unfinished. After his death Leonard da Vinci’s Notebooks were hidden away, scattered or lost. His wonderful ideas were forgotten; his inventions were not tested and built for hundreds of years. It was largely due to his wide interests that the things he started were never finished. These casual, passing, fleeting, but intense, interests can be found described, outlined, in those Notebooks. These Notebooks record his observations, his sketches, his notes. They are all scattered through 28 Notebooks in over 5000 pages from 1490 to 1519. The Notebooks are a fascinating mixture of philosophy, scientific enquiry and art with, arguably, four major topics: painting, architecture, mechanics and anatomy made when he was 37 to 67.-Ron Price with thanks to ABC TV, “Leonardo da Vinci,” 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., October 31st, 2004.
________________________________ ________________________________ _____
Some may see it a little presumptuous for me to compare my Notebooks to those of one of the greatest geniuses of history. But, as Bahiyyih Nakhjavani writes in her article Artist, Seeker and Seer, our greatness “rests not in ourselves as much as in our ability and desire to circle around the great.”1 ‘Contrast’ is a better word than ‘compare’ because my Notebooks are so very different than da Vinci’s. I won’t ennumerate all the differences; perhaps the main difference is a visual bias in his work and a print bias in mine. Mine were collected some 500 years after da Vinci’s. Perhaps the first Notebook I created was in 1949 in kindergarten and from that year until 1962 I created many a school Notebook. None of these notes now exist except two essays from English class in 1961-2 and now located in my Journal Volume 1.1.

I have some other notes going back to the early to mid sixties, to the start of my pioneering-travel life in 1961-2, newspaper columns by Richard Needham of the Toronto Globe and Mail, and the 1970s, mostly (a) photocopies of material given to me by students at Box Hill Tafe in Melbourne, (b) from Baha’i books which I keep in my Notebook: “Notes/Quotes file B,” (c) from a sociology of art course I taught in 1974 and (d) from media studies courses I taught in Ballarat in 1976-7. But the vast bulk of my notes comes from the period 1982 to 2004. Many notes and Notebooks from 1982 to 2002 were given to the Baha’i Council of the Northern Territory as part of the History of the Baha’i Faith in that territory.

What exists now in my study are notes and Notebooks for a twenty-five year period, 1983 to 2008, from the age of 39 to 64.2 This collection of 300(ca) Notebooks, in the form of two-ring binders and arch-lever files, consists of written notes and quotes from books on a multitude of subjects, photocopies and typed copies of the works of others and notes taken mostly from my reading and to a far lesser extent my observations and experiences. There are many categories of these Notebooks: (i) journal and diary Notebooks, (ii) Baha’i Notebooks and (iii) Notebooks on a multitude of humanities and social science disciplines/topics. I have made a list of these and previous Notebooks in Section IX.1 of my files. They are found in the same file as: Section VI, Volume 2: Part 1: Unpublished Writings. I have also added additional information on the notebooks of other writers to help provide perspectives on my own notes and note-keeping. I should add, too, that there are many (iv) poetry Notebooks which occupy an extensive category unto itself. One could say that these are the four main categories of Notebooks that I have in my study twenty-five years after I began to keep notes that became the collection that now exists.3

New ideas are incubated, to some extent, in these Notebooks. I have squeezed brief writing periods, sketches of varying lengths and tasks of different kinds, into my frenetic life out of necessity because I was teaching a particular subject, out of interest because it was associated with my involvement in the Baha’i Faith or because I wanted to write about a subject, an idea, an experience, if not at the time I recorded the words, at least later on. I rarely recorded observations of nature in any detail, although occasionally I did in my poetry. The accounts of my experiences can be found in my journals and my poetry.

There are 1000s of pages of notes; I would not even want to begin to count them. Over time I hope to write a more detailed outline of their origins, their evolution and their present contents. I’m not sure they are worth preserving as da Vinci’s were hundreds of years after they were written. I think it unlikely, although I will leave that to a posterity that I can scarcely anticipate at this climacteric of history in which I am living. For now, though, this brief statement is sufficient.4
________________________________ __FOOTNOTES_____________________ __
1 Bahiyyih Nakhjvani, “Artist, Seeker and Seer,” Baha’i Studies, Vol.10, p.19.
2 My Notebooks from the age of 18 to 39, from 1962 to 1983, are so minuscule as to hardly rate a mention. Those from the age of 5 to 18, although extensive, have disappeared into the dustbin of history. My first notes from the period 1983 to 2008 come from January 19th 1984, a journal entry. A more extensive analysis than this cursory one here may reveal a different timetable, a different history of my Notebooks.
3 Of course the whole note-taking process could be said to begin in the early years of primary school, say, 1949-1953 by which time I was in grade 4 and nine years old.

Hi just been offered a place on this access course, anyone know when campus details will be finalised? Says nothing on the website. They mentioned at interview they could be moving the course from Park Lane to the Horsforth campus. They also it could be a 5 day week course instead of 3 days a week which would be an awful lot of travelling for a couple of hours a day

If you are aiming for interactive gaming and 3D...

If you are aiming for interactive gaming and 3D modelling, it would appear that you need a combination not usually available in an Access course or A levels. Which means the university course would cover much of the specifics, you just require the right foundations. A strong grasp of mathematics would be good thing to develop. So an Access course with significant Mathematical content would be a good thing. If finances are an issue studying For A levels in maths part time would be viable, if you have the commitment and aptitude.

Computing is not all maths, but the area in which you are interested in does benefit from a good grasp of logic and discrete maths. Have a look at some of the free mass on line course providers, for example udacity.com and coursera.org. They have courses which can help to give you a better idea of what you will encounter at university before you get to the really interesting stuff. Plus it should help you to get in the right frame of mind to learn formally.

I've received an unconditional offer to a local college on a HND course, and as far as I know the latest I can accept their offer will be June 6th, I'm not sure however on my future :(

I might be offered a job with a new company possibly end of August time that would offer similar training and a strong future for me, so not sure where to go currently!

If I accept the college course offer, when is the latest I can politely decline to attend? Would this also play havoc with applying for the course tuition fees to be paid as well as my maintenance grant? (I'm not exactly sure currently on that process either)

Many thanks for the help :)

If you applied before Jan 15th, the deadline to accept offers is May 8th. If you applied after Jan 15th, then the deadline is June 6th.

You can accept the college offer, and then tell them up until the day of enrolment that you don't want to take them up on their offer.

You need to apply for funding NOW, just incase you want to go. If you decide not to go to this course, then simply pone student finance and ask them to cancel the application - you won't get any money from them if you don't start lectures at the college, so don't worry about that.

Hi,

I'm thinking of going back to university after making some pretty bad decisions about where to study the first time around. I'll be nearly 24 by the time I'd enrolled - and would love to hear from any younger 'mature' students (early to mid twenties) who've gone to university and really enjoyed it. I feel like I could still go and get a great education out of it, no doubt about that, but I'm not so sure about the social side of it. I still really want a proper university experience and would like to meet people - I've never enjoyed the fancy dress/pub golf thing so I don't feel like I missed out there but it'd be nice to find people who like going to gigs and stuff. What is anyone's experience of socialising with younger students? Did you find it difficult or not? I've actually got friends ranging from 20-mid thirties so I know it's possible, but in real life you obviously encounter a wider range of people in different situations and contexts - the thought of being surrounded by teenagers makes me a bit nervous.

Depending on what I decide to study and where, I won't necessarily be starting completely from scratch - I've got the option of beginning in the third year if I carry on with the course I was doing, so I'd be there one year at an English university, two at a Scottish or Irish university.

I think it's my own problem and something I'll have to get over myself, I definitely don't want it to hold me back and I know it's probably just my own paranoia and shyness.

I want to hear from people who have first-hand experience of it, or anyone who has slightly older friends at university - anyone...?

Thanks!

It all depends on yourself as a person.

I went to University when I was 18 and dropped out after first year because I wasn't enjoying my course.

I came back to the same University and am coming towards the end of my first year now and it's definitely a different experience.

I'm 21 now and it's safe to say there is a big difference between being 18 the first time and University and coming with a tiny bit more experience of the real world. To me, the freshers seem very young and don't interest me. I came back to the same halls of residence as last time which is known as being quite outgoing and it's just not really the same the second time around.

Like i said though, this is just me. I'm not so concerned with the "University experience" as the majority of people seem to be. I got it all out of my system the last time I was here.

I think if I had come to University at the age of 21 for the very first time I would have had an easier time with the Uni experience. But because i've been before and returned it's a different story and I think first year for me especially was done and dusted before.

My experience wont necessarily be the same for you but if you start again you may soon see that it was a different attitude towards and time in life.

Unless your gym membership is very cheap or...

Unless your gym membership is very cheap or easily affordable for you, let it lapse. Your teacher training college should have some gym facilities that you will be able to use on a needs basis. There may be sporting societies that you can join as well. If neither of those works for you, look out for vouchers on daily deal sites, that wil allow you attend a gym or exercise class for a period of time for significantly less than a monthly gym membership.

With regards to whether you will have time to go to the gym whilst studying, you will have time if you schedule time. If you don't, there will always be something else to do. There is always more reading, background research and knowledge condolidation to be done. But taking time to do some exercise also helps the learning process.

When you go to your placement school, you may find that your current gyms location is inconvenient. Which is another reason not to commit to a year long membership. If you don't think you can cope without the safety net of being able to go to the gym when you want, the 3 month membership, would give you the option to go until you start your course.

Good Luck.

its not too hard but can get your brain going as you don't come across much maths day to day, like percentages and stuff! On a lot of questions you have a calculator and there's a space for working out so you should be fine!

i have just enrolled at Gateshead to do human biology, health studies & English language. I originally enquired at newcastle, went to to enrolment evening to find the course leader off sick and no one there to fill in so got put in a room with a load of 16 year olds (I'm 26) and their parents, choosing which course to do once they pass their gcse's!! Got told to fill in an application and they would be in touch, apart from the evening being a complete waste of time I then got in touch about 3-4 weeks later to be told there was no application form in my name but here's another just post it back!! Ermm no thanks - so went to Gateshead college, sat through a presentation for the course with the course leader, did the test, had a one on one and now I'm enrolled :D

newcastle might have a 'good reputation' but the staff are a joke, Gateshead have been nothing but helpful and happy, a far cry from newcastle! Yeah Gateshead might not be as convenient to get to but having previously studied at both I don't know why I bothered with newcastle this time to be honest, I 100% recommend Gateshead :D

Hi Jenhan,

Thank you for your reply, Newcastle was never an option for me. I live in Sunderland and the easiest college for me to get to is actually Gateshead.
I think I am alright with percentage's and stuff, but will go over them again. A calculator does help a lot lol.
I have a 15 year old daughter who is predicted A* in the GCSE maths so she will be a big help.
I am hoping to do psychology, human biology and I have been told that I will have to do quantitative methods, as I only have a D in GCSE maths.
I did actually do 2 HEFC modules way back in 2001, how ever these are not valid anymore. I am really looking forward to getting back to learning.

Thank you again for your reply.

Maybe I will see you in Human biology in September :D

Rather than going on to do access now you would...

Rather than going on to do access now you would be much better off to just re-do your GCSE year, if you can, and get 9-11 GCSE's at the best grades possible. I know this seems like a big deal, but I missed a lot of school when I was young due to health problems. Luckily these happened after my GCSE's, but I have never been able to complete my A-levels. I'm 23 now and that is the one thing that is holding me back and I wish I could have completed them sooner, even if it took me 3-4 years to get the right grades.

You may well find that despite good access grades uni's won't accept you with so few GCSE results as you won't be a mature student when you apply. OR when you go to apply for jobs people won't look at your application due to the lack of GCSE and A-level results when you're young. A lot of access students still have GCSE and A-level results, even if they're not as good as they should be. Research this for the Physics courses you want to apply for.

Also when I was your age going back to school with people a year younger than me was an absolute no, no; I just would not consider it. But now because of that stubbornness (and various health problems) I am having to go back to study with people who are about 7-8 years younger than me! One year when you're 16-20 is nothing, but as time goes on that year means an awful lot more. Don't rush it just for the sake of getting to uni quicker, you can go there at any time if you get the right qualifications when you're young.

I have a few teenage friends here and they're very nice but it would sure be nice to spend some time with other mature students. I'm 27, and sometimes the age gap is really glaring when they talk about going out and getting smashed every night and listening to Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber. XD

I only just discovered the Burlington society here (for mature students) but I haven't gone to any meets yet and unsure if I will this year because of time constraints and exams.

I also have another question - those of you at uni (any, really) what did you do about accommodation? Did you commute, move into halls or find older flatshares? I've lived in halls this year and feel like a change for my next year, the constant partying is getting a bit old, hehe! :D

No it is not too late to start an access course....

No it is not too late to start an access course. The distance learning place mentioned by the OP is a private business, it is in their interest to encourage you to start the course as soon as possible. By running the course over 12 months rather than the 9 months of an academic year it allows them to schedule their resources more easily. Also it gives you more time to get to grips with new concepts.

If you have time to do a Access course full time, the advantage is that you have to commit a certain amount of time in college every week. You have regular contact with lecturers in person. You will also have to complete work according to strict deadlines. This can be very demanding if you have other commitments. Some colleges offer Access courses on a part time basis over two year.

Although Access courses at brick colleges are completed over 9 months, bear in mind that between half terms, bank holidays, Christmas and Easter you will have at least 6-7 non teaching weeks during the academic year. Although you will typically be expected to complete course work during that time.

It really comes down to which one suits your needs best. If you are confident about self study via distance learning and the course meets the requirements of the university you want to apply to. But if when you ask questions of the distance learning course provider and they are inconsistent or slow to reply, I would be concerned. Sometimes academic administration communication is poor, but these are the people you would have to deal with if you have a problem during the course. So ask yourself if you have the patience to perserve and to follow up to get the correct information.

If you haven't already done so, have a look at the OU Access course. If you meet their funding criteria it can be very affordable and they have a good track record in distance learning support. Check also that their Access course would be suitable for the university course you are interested in.

Hi everyone,

I'm in a bit of a quandry at the...

Hi everyone,

I'm in a bit of a quandry at the moment due to a realisation that I had at 4am filling shelves with baked beans and I'm after a bit of advice. I left university in 2008 after the second year (ie didn't graduate) of a BSc Motorsports Technology course and wandered headlong into the economic mess we're in now, sitting on the dole for 18 months before getting a job with a local charity helping to deliver Learn Direct ICT and maths courses. After a redundancy and another six months of signing on I'm in the pleasant job of stacking shelves on the local supermarket's night shift. It was on one of these great shifts that it finally hit me - my life is totally screwed up. I'm bored out of my skull after only six months of baked beans and spaghetti hoops so there's no chance of me progressing through the company ranks, my lack of other experience and meaningful qualifications coupled with very few job opportunities means there's next to nowt I can move into and the PTLLS level 4 that I did get while working with Learn Direct makes me too qualified for most apprenticeships going. That leaves getting back into education and probably heading back to university.

The question is the route.

Being more interested in physics and materials (the modules I got on best with in degree round 1 were high performance materials and mechanics), I'm looking at courses in that kind of area, like materials science/engineering or metallurgy, so I know I need to get my maths level 2 (Level 2 Cert. in Adult Numeracy) up to at least AS Level and the AS Physics I did back in 2006 upgraded to A Level (I was surprised to find that the course spec I studied is still live with OCR). I've found a distance learning company that offers both A Level Maths and A Level Physics but local colleges do too, though in the "16-19" sections of their websites. Reading through this forum, I see that access courses are another route.

I suppose what I'm asking with this post is this: does anyone have any experience, as a mature student, of studying these kinds of subjects by these routes? I'm not sure which I prefer the sound of best and I'm not sure how colleges take those a decade older than normal wanting to do A Levels. I know nothing at all about these "access course" things so if anyone could give me a brief overview of what the score is with them I'd be grateful. This is all before I get into looking at the happs with student finance these days since that has changed since round #1 too.

So many questions wandering around my head about this. Makes me curse my younger, idiotic, bone idle self :o

Thanks for any help,

Anth.

I don't think you are mad at all, if you then I must be to. I am going to Uni at the age of 42 and will be 45 when I graduate. I left my secure job with a Local Authority last August to return to college to study for maths and English GSCE and an Access to HE. I was dreading it at first as I hated school but I love and I am actually feeling a little sad I have only 5 weeks left. Cant wait to go to Uni though. For the last 8 years I have wanted to do this but was too scared to make that leap and now it has come down to its now or never and I don't want to live a life of regrets and what ifs. I really feel sorry for my poor hubby though as my daughter is off to uni as well this year, so he will have 2 stressed students in the house. Good luck and ENJOY!!!:)

I've just been accepted onto a foundation degree course which will run for 2 years and then I'll do 2 years after that in uni for the full degree. Didn't have enough points to go straight to uni but this is one way of getting the degree so I'm happy! Spent the last few years in jobs that I don't enjoy so I'm prepared to work hard and be a bit skint if means I'll end up where I want to be. I am slightly nervous at the thought of not having a full time job but I'm good with budgeting so I should be fine!

Hoping that I'll get along with others on my course even if there is a bit of an age gap but I don't think I'll be the only mature student on my course so fingers crossed that I won't feel like the odd one out!

As your referees won't budge, go back to Askham...

As your referees won't budge, go back to Askham Bryan and explain the situation. See if they can offer you any flexibility. For example maybe they will accept a reference from a previous employer, or you could send them some examples of your recent coursework with marks and feedback.

Are your referees just being bound by college rules? Maybe you could contact your college's Admin team and ask? If it's a college policy not to comment on suitability in references, then Askham Bryan might be more flexible.

Just a piece of side advice which might help - When you send emails, make sure that you're writing at GCSE level, even though it's not academic writing. I know you're in a tizz right now, but your post above contains no sentence structure and is quite difficult to read. Ensure that you make it as easy as possible for Askham Bryan to see that you're literate, capable and a good prospect.
Good luck!

It's personal experience.

I was doing an AS Level part-time when I started thinking about going to uni - a sort of introduction back to study, to see if I liked it. I'd planned to study it across two years (finishing it just before I started uni), which was acceptable to the place I was studying with when I started out. However, eight months in, the exam board notified a series of major changes to the subject's curriculum which would start the following academic year - effectively half way through my planned study. I was told that I'd have to complete my AS Level within a year or start again from scratch with the new syllabus. The new syllabus was so different, that what I'd studied would no longer be relevant. There wasn't time for me to complete in the remaining four months of that academic year, so I had to abandon it. AS Levels were designed to be taken in a single year and I was told that no allowance was made for part-time students who might need to take longer.

That was with the same exam board, so I think it would be more likely to happen if you're swapping to a different exam board, four years down the road. You'll only know for sure by asking the colleges.

Thanks for the response, so you mean you had a gap in the middle of an AS level, not AS and A2? I found the JCQ document on this and it looks promising- "A candidate returning after a break (e.g. gap year) to take an Advanced GCE qualification at another centre where a different specification is being taught, provided that this is within the shelf life of the original specification." and they also say "A candidate returning to a centre after a prolonged absence" is acceptable so I should be fine. I am gonna contact the exam boards as well as the colleges to be safe.

I cannot find any similar cases or advice on our situation:

I currently receive DLA at middle care & lower mobility. I'm studying an access course part time & depend on my partner to help care for me (we decided not to to apply for carers) throughout the day & he takes care of our one year old & primary aged children by doing school runs, cleaning house, bathing them etc. He DOES NOT work.

We currently receive income related ESA (WRAG - couple), DLA, Child Tax Credit, Child Benefit, Housing Benefit & Council Tax benefit.

I am planning on becoming a full-time student next year.

I assume that ESA will stop once I go to Uni full-time & I'm unsure about DLA; I'm yet to look into that. I do realise that I can get a lot of support throughout uni with having a disability, hence the decision.

Anyway, I'm unsure of what we will be entitled to once I'm a student. I have read that, as a student, we will not be entitled to Housing Benefit and a little worried about that with having the children. This is assuming DLA stops which, if it does, will not mean I won't still need the help to some degree & we will definitely need my partner at home to care for the children.

I think I remember, a few years back, someone saying that it may be possible to change the way our claim works & get my partner to claim for me & the children rather than me doing it & then, with him unemployed & caring for the children, he will be able to claim housing benefits. Once I have completed my degree & our youngest is in school, my partner plans on returning to education or begin an apprenticeship.

There is very little advice for couples with one not working and one a student & I'm utterly baffled by it all. Is there anyone there in a similar situation or anyone who knows what the process is in these circumstances?

Thank you x

What you said is completely correct, even if you study part-time you will still only be eligible for the equivalent of 2 years, and the latter 2 years (or 4 years if you are doing 50% intensity).

You might also want to consider how you are going to get into Uni to do this. I like you started a degree in Biology and left after year 1 to pursue a career in retail management. I applied this year to go back to Uni in September only to be told by all 5 choices that I wasnt eligible to come back to study as I had no formal study within last 5 years, so now I am going back to do an Access course full time in September, then to hopefully get into a full time degree in 2014. I seriously regret the choices I made, now that I will be 28 this summer, I wish I had never left.

I currently work with Student Loans and I am surprised you are so informed already with this, most people I speak to daily are confused as soon as they think about finance.

Hope this helps a bit.

I've done as much research as I can, hence the conclusions I came to; I have to say though, there is a fair amount of ambiguity to it all and it takes a fair bit of 'reading between the lines' to get to where I am.

So the last two thirds of my course are likely to be covered by SFE? In terms of Access I will probably be going down the Open University route, as they have no entrance requirements and seem relatively well regarded in the profession. I have spoken to OU and they have said I can register for the course now (part-time, over six years) and then apply for funding from May onwards, which they seem to think I will get.

Wondering if anyone can give me some advice. I've applied through UCAS to do a Social Work degree as a mature student. I have an interview next week. I'v e been given a conditional offer which I have accepted. I only applied to do Social Work and because I have accepted the conditional offer can no longer add any more options. The thing is I am having second thoughts about doing Social Work for one I don't think I'll make all the conditions set on the offer and I have not studied for a while so think it would be best for me to ease myself in my taking a degree course with a foundation year I've been looking at Psychology, Criminology and Sociology all these course come with a foundation year. But I'm stuck as to what to do as I have already accepted my conditional offer for Social work on UCAS!

Hi all I'm Phil, I'm 26 and looking to get back...

Hi all I'm Phil, I'm 26 and looking to get back into education. After college I completed a BA in Philosophy and then started to work for Sainsbury's as a shop assistant. 4 years later and I'm starting to worry about my future :) I have been looking at Askham Bryan in York which offers many tempting Land based courses. The problem is, as in many aspects of life, money! As I have already completed a degree it seems I can not apply for another loan but there is a new 24+ learning loan available for level 3 and 4 courses. I would love to apply for a foundation degree but the second year would be level 5 so I think I would only be able to get a loan for the first year. If anyone has been in a similar situation or could offer me any advise on this I would very appreciative. I was anxious I may have left it too late but reading these forums has given me a lot of confidence and made me see it is never too late so thanks student room! Also the level 3 diplomas look awesome too but I am unsure if they would be a suitable level after already completing a degree, has anyone had experience of a level 3 diploma as a mature student? Thanks very much for your time I look forward to being part of student room forums and will update you on my applications :)

When I went for the interview for my Access course I had very little idea about my next steps other than very generally towards a career in teaching (no idea even about primary/secondary).

I have ended up taking my course over 2 years part-time which allowed me to secure a school placement and to take my stronger subjects in my first year. This enabled me to gain some confidence and experience that allowed make some decisions with a lot more information.

If you are unsure about your academic ability or find the quick turn around to making university choices daunting then it's potentially an option, it certainly was better for me.

I can't give you much specific advice on unis, except to say that I've heard of all of them as being fairly good for science/ engineering subjects. I personally would put Durham, and probably Nottingham, Manchester, and Loughborough as being particularly good, but I don't have any particularly good knowledge so don't take my word for it!
It's a VERY good idea to get an accredited degree as this will allow you to go directly into related employment, whereas without it you may need a little extra training or may get slightly less related jobs. Also, it means that the course is probably very focussed actually on engineering rather than going in depth on possibly less relevant or interesting subjects, but then you may prefer a course which is a bit broader... If in doubt, stick with the accredited ones.
I've also heard that about Nottingham as a city. The uni is actually more on the outskirts, and was very nice when I visited - it is very green and would definitely have a good environment to work and live in. If you're likely to go into the city more, then maybe you should be very slightly concerned about it's reputation, although to be honest you should be fine as long as you stick to sensible areas. I'm sure you're old enough to be sensible and look after yourself!
My cousin went to Brunel, which doesn't say a lot of good about it... however, I don't really know a lot about it. A good place for info on employment prospects specifically for the course at the uni is UniStats - google it.

Thanks for the advices
Hope everything turns out well for both of us! Good luck :)
