I didn't apply for economics but I did really basin one maths module at AS (got a D) and I applied and still got in (for Philosophy and Economics). Given that Economics is super competitive and there will be other candidates who haven't done any resits, there will be other preferable candidates. But if your overall grade doesn't come down by much, you may still stand a chance. What Im saying is, if LSE is where you want to go, still apply! Besides, you don't know how bad you've done until August so just relax and focus on your other exams!
Either they do not care since you meet the criteria with your other four subjects
Or, they may think you can't handle a lot of workload or that you neglect subjects you don't think are important. My advice is try to get at least a B and you'll probably be safe :)

Hello!

As far as we've been told, 40 week contracts are for the Myddelton wing. What's more, if you are a postgrad, you will (in most cases) be made an offer for Myddelton.

If you'd like to get in touch with administration via :Rosebery@lse.ac.uk to confirm the above fact and get some peace of mind, please do so.

Thanks very much, and apologies for the slightly delayed reply!
I have accepted an offer for Rosebery hall but they haven't specified whether the offer is for the Rosebery wing or the Myddelton wing. I am a postgrad, and the contract is for 40 weeks - although I had asked for a 31 week contract.
Does that mean that I'm the Myddelton wing? How can I know for sure?

An LSE student is just as likely to fail in the job market as a UCL student. It's a misconception that students have that going to one of these two top universities is somehow better than going to the other. Insofar as opening doors is concerned, all they do is get your foot in the door, in equal capacities, it is your own application and grades and abilities that carry you into a job.

My suggest: stop fretting about statistics and job prospects if you have both LSE and UCL on your horizon. Pick whichever you want, flip a damn coin if that makes you feel better, just go to uni determined to work. That will eventually get you a TC/Pupillage.

It's true that there are a lot of people studying Economics with very high numbers of A*s both at GCSE and A-level; that being said I know people who got less A*s, a couple of B's or even a C at GCSE and made the cut through what I imagine was a good personal statement and strong A-level predictions. With that in mind I'd say you stand as good a chance as anyone if you get those results and keep up the good work :)

I'm guessing you applied for spring weeks and got none? There were people on LSE Econ who got 5/6 offers and people with none. It varies, the uni alone doesn't guarantee anything.

Your degree is fine, I'd even go as far to say that even if you were at Cambridge or LSE for Economics you'd still get zero offers.
You need to work on other aspects of your application whether it is extra curriculars or commercial awareness or whatever.

Hey,

I just submitted my application form. I put high holborn as my first but all my friends have been saying how bad HH is. I kinda wanna change it now.

Passfield seems really attractive to me in terms of the social aspect and so on. I just wanna ask if it is in a safe area cuz i know it is quite close to camden town. Camden town can be a quite doggy place.

As an international student, i was gonna chose a 40 weeks contract. But I might just stay in the hall for only easter holiday, not christmas. Is it possible for me to stay in Passfield only during Easter? Extend the contract?

Another thing i am awared of is that Passfield does not have liftsss?! I have got quite a lot luggages. Are all the single rooms on the top floors???

thank you so much!!

Heya. Passfield is in a safe location. Camden is about 15 minutes’ walk away (which is further than you might think in central London terms) and the hall itself is definitely not in a dodgy area - perhaps look up the address on street view for the best idea. We've only had one incident of stealing near the hall in the entire year - which is pretty good for 220 residents staying over the course of 8 months. I would add that I've never felt particularly unsafe in Camden during the time I've spent there. It's chaotic on a Friday or Saturday night, but pretty harmless. Crime on the whole is low in central London.

With regards to staying over Easter - it is entirely possible, but you won't be able to technically extend the length of your contract. This is because Passfield becomes a hostel over the holidays in order to raise funds and subsidise our rent. Instead, you can choose to pay the nightly hostel rate (which I think is about 20-30% more expensive) and live in the hall over the holidays as a guest. This is fairly common and you won't be the only student to do this over Easter.

Finally, Passfield does have limited lift access to the LG, G, 1st and 2nd floors of the main building. This covers most residents, but there's no guarantee that you'll be placed in a room that has lift access. Don't fret though - the committee and other staff will be on hand to help carry bags and move people in.

Hopefully this has helped answer your questions – Passfield has lots in place to help international students move in. You indicated an interest in living in a single room - do note that the hall has a roughly 50/50 split of people living in singles and shared bedrooms and keep this in mind when/if you apply to the hall.

Hello,

late reply but I'll say I agree with crunchychips on the university rankings being rather pointless. imho, outside the oxbridge duo, school name matters considerably less. i got offered Warwick and UCL too but I specifically wanted LSE so I waited. plus I didn't like it in business school.

no doubt there will be people who disagree about the oxbridge part but... they do have the alumni and good funding. my oxbridge friends are alot better treated than most university students i would think.

would you prefer life in warwick or london? because three years is a significant time you're going to spend in either one of them.

it's a great school, and if you can get a scholarship/funding from them, even better. you can run out of organs to sell when living in london.

I'm an international student and I'm going to apply this autumn. I was considering Government at LSE but I'm quite anxious about the entry requirements. I have B at CAE and next month I'm taking CPE. My diploma is excellent and I'll have good recommendations. I am really interested in this course and have several awards from national debate contests, but what if I take CPE with C? Please, if there's a EU student in this course, give me an idea of what my chances are!
Thanks :)))

I am 2013-14 admit in MSc in Management Sciences (OR) at LSE. However given the recent changes in visa regulations and rather shaky European conditions, I am skeptical of the condition after graduation. It will really help if you can through some light on it.

Also, I understand that LSE is ranked amongst top in employability, but I am not sure how it works on course by course basis. It will also be helpful to know what jobs are available for post graduates from LSE in general and for OR program graduates in particular.

Well, this is going to be a bit of a pessimistic thread (and I don't mean to put any prospective LSE students off). But, I'm in my second year now and I remember the days when I used to LOVE studying for Maths. I used to do hours of work and not even feel as though I was "studying" as I found it that enjoyable. The same applies for Economics. But now, I sit in my maths lectures BORED OUT OF MY MIND! I'm sure the content is interesting but the lectures just make me fall asleep, the teaching is okay (I don't have anything to compare it to, university-wise) and I feel like no one really gives a **** about you, they teach for the sake of teaching, which may be why I'm not interested in Maths anymore and cant be bothered to do homeworks. Is it just me? I took some actuarial modules and I find them so much more interesting, which isn't like me at all as I used to be a micro/calculus/algebra enthusiast! So, is it just me? Is it just LSE? Or is it more the transition to university that changes your taste? My friends at other universities love their subjects even more now. EDIT : it may not be LSE but just the way things are taught at university or how different Maths is at university (abstract) than at A levels. (Ps my enter key doesn't work, hence the lack of paragraphs).

I gave my TOEFL last year in September and got 106 whereas my program needs 107. I have got certificate issued by my university that my entire degree was taught and examined in English. Planning to send them both the things.

Will LSE accept the language condition put up on my offer? I do not want to retake for just 1 mark. Have you heard of any case where LSE has lowered their language requirement? What should I do?

As long as you can justify why you're taking something, you should be allowed to. Econ History is quite a popular choice in 1st year, never heard of someone taking just History. Maths/Finance/Languages/Operational Research are generally common options in 2nd/3rd year.

Hi,

I'm an international student who achieved the highest grade (top 95th percentile) in Swedish, English, French, Advanced Maths, Physics and Social Studies and Economics. I have various relevant experience and EC, and an extenuating circumstance on six months leading me to postpone my graduation with half a year. I plan on going to France the first half of the year before uni.

I will be applying to Cambridge for Economics but as for LSE I'm not sure whether it'd be best to go for Economics (my personal first choice) or maybe for Accounting and Finance since I've gathered it might not be as competitive admissions-wise. Maths and Econ would would perhaps be as prestigious as pure Econ but I'm unsure if I could handle the maths.

Thoughts?

I went from Business Maths and Stats to Maths and Economics - it was very easy since I did all the 1st year Maths and Econ modules. My friend wanted to go from Philosophy and Econ to Maths and Econ - he didn't take all the 1st year modules but they made him a conditional offer (something like he needs 70% in MA100).

Switching into Economics is quite popular - they make conditional offers that you need 70% in Econ B, one of MA100/ST102 and 60% in other modules (I think).

Generally, switching in 1st year is difficult for admin reasons mostly, but switching just before 2nd year is not too bad, but it does in theory depend on the availability in each course.

Switching to a course in the same dept is a lot easier since you only need to talk to 1 person and usually courses within the same dept have a common 1st year.

GCSEs are not the only way used, they're just one of the many things considered. When it comes to one of the most competitive courses at the LSE, such as Economics, the only way of getting in is by having an as close to perfect profile. So while LSE acknowledges that GCSEs aren't everything, how would they distinguish between two applicants who have A*A*A predicted in their A2s, have all As at AS and an excellent PS and recommendation; but one candidate has mostly A*s at GCSE and the other has As and Bs. Why should the applicant with As and Bs at GCSE be preferred when another applicant has the same profile but has had consistently high achievement right from his/her GCSEs. It comes down to that. LSE isn't saying that you're any less brilliant because of slightly less perfect GCSEs scores, it's saying that someone else is even more brilliant than you (on paper).

Thanks for the reply.. I 100% agree with you :)

It depends what you're willing to sacrifice.

You can get accommodation for around £90/week from LSE if you're willing to share. Otherwise it's around £120/week minimum for a single at Butlers Wharf. I'm not sure about the prices of private flatshares.

Apart from accommodation, London really isn't that much more expensive for groceries and things compared to normal big cities and how much you will spend on food and leisure will vary from person to person. Travel to and from university can be free if you're willing to walk.

Wouldn't be able to comment about Oxford commute but I can't imagine it being wonderful, especially if you have 9am lectures!
