I done a past paper today and got 90%, which believe it or not I was annoyed with, I made a couple of stupid mistakes! Hows your revision going? Have to say doing F361 is a welcome break from the Livy!

Revision for this one's actually going okay, but then if it weren't there would be a problem for the A2! Yeah I keep messing up simple stuff like agreement, but hopefully as I've been doing as many as I can as quickly as possible, I'll have the time to be able to go through it properly in the exam! Urghh livy... You don't even get the satisfaction of finishing a sentence and knowing it's right as the whole passage is about the length of one of his sentences!

How are you approaching your revision?
I've learnt his rise to power but after that it gets very bitty with his dealings with the different groups - I'm not sure where to start!
Any advice or resources you recommend?

Hi. I took this exam last year and got a good A...

Hi. I took this exam last year and got a good A and some of my class is retaking it tomorrow. For decoration, I know in the past the board has asked specifically in about how are houses decorated such as in the 2009 paper "Wealthy citizens in Herculaneum and Ostia used decoration in their houses and gardens to
reflect their interests and beliefs.’ How far do you agree with this statement [25] so I think its really important to know. It would be good especially in essay about houses because what does the decoration say about the owner? Think about social identity and what the houses say about that owner for example: a big house would say he's rich, the house is very well decorated with nth style fresco's/paintings. This shows that he wanted to impress visitors with the well decorated rooms. I think that he could be in politics as he has a large banqueting room to entertain and his house was built to impress visitors etc.....(House of Menander). Decoration deff does help!!!! Inscriptions do help to back up your points and it shows the examiner you are considering all different types of evidence. Hope all this helps!

In my school Latin and Greek are taught in year nine, but you only start Classic Civilsation in year 10 if you choose to take it as a GCSE subject. I thought it looked interesting and I would rather be doing it instead of Art.
Is there any way I can prepare for it beforehand?

My school doesnt offer till A-level and me and 3 others got As in January even though we'd only been studying for a couple of months. Its not that hard so u wont need to prepare. It is fun and very much essay based, but no tedious coursework like Art.

Hi, I know this late but figure better late than never! I also saw you on the Bryanston thread :) I went to Repton last year, and it's amazing. Slightly more freedom and less academic focus than the other Jact Summer schools is what most people who had done the others said. Pupils over 18 were allowed down the village pub etc, and there wasn't much homework. But fantastic food, fantastic people, decent accomadation and lovely teachers. Definitely recommend it! Hopefully see you at Bryanston :)

What you are proposing is certainly possible (at...

What you are proposing is certainly possible (at least to AS; you may then find that you can go further, I simply have no experience beyond AS level) if you are linguistically able (which I would presume you are, if you're taking two languages, interested in Literature and History, and motivated.

I'm currently teaching myself the AS course (with OCR as they're the only exam board that offer it.) I'm using a combination of the following (although of course this is just what I ended up doing - your mileage may vary!)

1) Linney's Latin Class - http://www.linneyslatinclass.com/ghlectures.php
If you can get past William E Linney's slooowwww American-accent, his lectures are exceedingly useful. They are keyed into a textbook, now in the public domain (which can be read or downloaded at http://archive.org/details/firstyearlatinb00harlgoog) and take you from zero latin knowledge to a very respectable position, certainly enough to read many passages. Although it starts off with very basic grammar, the textbook teaches grammar in a slightly eclectic order (the ablative of means, for example, before the past tense) and rewards working through from the very beginning, if only to create an even firmer foundation for later Latin study.

2) http://www.cambridgescp.com/ws2_tlc/...ras/ocras.html
A vocabulary tester. This is good, but i find it less effective at getting the vocabulary into my long term memory as

3)http://www.memrise.com/course/352/as-latin-vocabulary/
Sign up, it's free - and persevere with the memory exercises, which can seem odd at first. Creating 'mems' may seem like a waste of time but I find them helpful in the long run, and the site automatically tells you when to review different sections so as to most effectively fix the vocabulary in your memory.

4) Latin Unseens for translation, by Ashley Carter
The only thing I've actually spent money on - and it was only £10, roughly, from Amazon. Tricky, so feel free to pm me or post on this forum if you get stuck!

5) OCR itself. http://www.ocr.org.uk/qualifications...tin-h039-h439/
The OCR website has past papers, mark schemes, the teacher guide, schemes of work and examiner reports for each unit. Very useful, especially the examiners' reports - which are not only sometimes a bit wryly humorous (yes, I'm quite sad) but also tell you a lot about what the examiners are looking for. Also do not forget the legacy papers - especially for the A2 unseens, these are very useful.

6) For the literature unit at AS (which is in two halves, currently Cicero and Ovid) there is a useful analysis and commentary of Cicero's In Verrem (which arguably goes beyond the scope required for AS) at http://inverrem2_1.theclassicslibrary.com/contents/ . For Ovid, however, you are largely on your own.

Hope this was helpful - feel free to reply with any questions!
