Hi,

I am currently doing a 4 year integrated masters in Biological Science. I am wanting to apply for dentistry this October and wondered if I would still get the same funding as someone who had done a 3 year. i.e. if I apply to grad courses, would it still be that I fund the first year then the rest is by the NHS? Or does doing a 4 year undergrad mean i wouldnt get funded?

Thanks

It would obviously be best if you did everything you could to get the best grades possible across the board. However if you meet their A-level requirements, have good shadowing, extra curriculars and personal statement all you can do is apply and keep your fingers crossed like everyone else!
Might be worth calling the uni's you're most interested in and discussing it with them, they'll give you a clearer picture.
Good luck.

Yeah I mean its just I messed up big time on my s1 exam, just worried it might drop my over all grade from an A to a B but if I'm right it should still be an A :) I've got fairly good gcses and I've done my work experience and a lot of voluntary work over the past sort of 4/5 years! I was able to look at the mark scheme for my exam though and hopefully I will still get an A, I would be devastated if I got a B :(
Thanks good luck to you too if you're applying

I know this thread has popped up a lot of times but I was getting slightly unsure about my GCSE grades :/
Im in year 12 atm, I was wondering if my GCSE's match up to standards with other applicants, like not just meet the minimum requirements:

6 A*s (Maths, History, English Lang, English Lit, ICT double award)
6 As (Bio, Chem, Physics, RE, Citizenship, Media)
1 B (Spanish)
1 C (PE)

Ive heard of people with 8-10 A*'s applying :/

*Passes out*
You have 4 more subjects than me and more A*s and more As. Look, you're not going to get any trouble. The only trouble you can ever get with your GCSEs is if you don't have Bs in English Lang and the Sciences and Maths. Which you have. Bristol want an A in those subjects, but you've covered all them.

People are always gonna look better than you on paper. Hell, you're much better than me and a few others wanting to do Dentistry in Uni on paper. It honestly doesn't matter. They won't reject you just because you don't have 10A*s.

Right, I knew there was some kind of ongoing process by which the BDS is "transferred" to their system but assumed it was the USMLE.
I have read a few comments about some universities considering applications from access course students on a case by case basis - is there any evidence of this?

None of the Uni's I have contacted have indicated anything other than a strict no unless they openly accept them.

Yes, some of them are not very clear on what they will/won't accept regarding Access courses. From my own experience I can say that Newcastle are very friendly and welcoming regarding Access and seem to put an emphasis on having a well-rounded application, while Glasgow, Liverpool and Sheffield also told me that they accept them...Some places abide by the principle that academics are only an element of an application and so will take into account other areas such as your extra-curriculars, work experience, personal reflection etc. Sadly, some other universities on the other hand will reject many potentially great students at the outset every year solely on the basis that they have a blanket "not suitable" policy for Access qualifications.

It really is worth speaking to each individual dental school that you are interested in and seeing what they say, as I think it is very much a "case by case" basis with some schools.

Quick questions... Is chemistry hard to get your head around at a-level? I'm not very good at it now (at GCSE) but I'm determined to work hard for a-levels... Also do dental schools really look at your GCSE grades? What grades do you need to get in? Also what would make me a good dental candidate for uni apart from grades? Is there anything that would make my application look even better if I had it on there? Thank you!

Chemistry A level is not that hard personally. But some people do find it hard. It depends more so on the way your mind works. Even if you are not good at it at gcses, a level is a lot different. I only managed to get an A* in a gcse chemistry. But in my AS, i got an A (highest grade you can get).

Im in year 12 and I know that at the end my teachers will predict my points, these are what Im quite sure they'l give me:

Bio HL- 6
Chem HL- 6
Hist HL- 6

Maths Studies SL- 7
English SL- 6/7
Spanish SL- 6

I'm worried these won't be enough, I have enough work experience and if all being well with my UKCAT and my all round application do I still stand a chance?
Most uni's ask for 36 points and Im hoping for 38 but normally A-leveler's have A*A*A predicted even though the cut off is AAA :/
Im just worried :(

As long as you are predicted 6's in Chemistry and Biology HL you should be fine as long as your UKCAT score is good (unless you're applying to non-ukcat universities too). And I know that Newcastle give offers of 35 points for IB (one of my friends received a 35 point offer this cycle), so I'm sure you will do fine. And regarding the A level predictions, I was predicted AAAA, so no A*'s and still received 3 offers, so I wouldn't worry about being predicted the minimum score needed for entry.
Good luck!

If you're really eager to get started, my recommendation would be to start simple with anatomy. There are some good videos on the internet, aclands atlas of anatomy is a good one. It's 5 hours of head and neck dissection, if you just watch through it again and again, it will start to sink in and you'll become familiar with the anatomical terminology. Knowing your anatomy in first year can take a big weight off your shoulders as there is a lot to learn and many people find it quite overwhelming.

Aside from anatomy, things get a bit more complex, pharmacology is a tricky one unless you have someone to teach you, so is neuroscience ans physiology. Dental materials is pretty complex too. But i suppose you could make a start on biochemistry.

Search for Kaplan biochemistry on youtube, the videos are very good and you should be listening out for pathways such as gluconeogenesis, ketogenesis, fatty acid oxidation, glycolysis, glyogenolysis etc.

You'll have to wait til you get to uni to really get stuck in with lectures but i'll set you a couple of challenges which should keep you going, and if you manage to master them you'll have a great head-start.

Learn the names of all the cranial nerve and especially the ones which innervate the mouth.
Know the complete innervation of the mouth, sensory, special sensory, motor and parasympathetic secretomotor.
Be able to describe the branches of each of the 3 divisions of the trigeminal nerve.
Know the branches of the facial nerve as it travels through the parotid gland (there are 5)
Find out what the circle of Willis is and why it is important.
Find out what the Brocca and Wernickes areas of the brain are for
Find out what the corticospinal tract does
Find out what gluconeogenesis is and how it is regulated by insulin/glucagon/Acetyl-CoA
Find out how local anaesthetics work, do they block receptors, ion channels or do they act on the brain.
Find out the stages of amelogenesis and describe the differences between the primary and secondary dentitions.
Know the number of teeth in the primary and secondary dentitions and in which order and at around which time they erupt.

Those are just some random questions, but if you can answer them, you'll be doing well :)

Best of luck.
Ryan

I also do general studies. Which should be all in all 4 exams with easy A's.

I'm afraid if you're predicted a B in chemistry it'll be 4 straight rejections, you absolutely need to be predicted and then achieve that A.

General studies may be an easy A, but universities know that and for that reason none of them accept it, along with critical thinking.

Have you done your work experience, thought about UKCAT and extra-curricular/work experience? If you haven't i suggest you get on in quickly as time is quickly running out.

Bart's tend to rank on UCAS tariff so bear that in mind.

Wow...you posted in a 7 year old thread, how much scrolling back did you do?! The person who started this must have already qualified! haha

Well it's hard to get into ... like every other dental uni. For a start people generally call it Barts, not Queen Mary. Secondly, same as every other uni, good UKCAT, good GCSEs, lot's of extra curricular and work experience. Musical instruments are good. Barts have a system at the moment whereby they rank applicants on UCAS tariff, so you might want to take that into consideration.

Don't buy your girlfriend a pair of loupes off...

Don't buy your girlfriend a pair of loupes off the shelf, they need to be fitted for each individual which is dependant on the working distance that your girlfriend feels comfortable with. If your girlfriend wears prescription glasses for reading then it would be wise to buy loupes that clip on to the frame so that if her prescription changes she can have the lenses in her glasses changed. If she doesn't wear glasses for reading then she could consider through the lens(TTL) loupes which are built into the plain glass of a pair of glasses. Always factor in illumination with loupes which will take the cost over the £2000 mark!
My advice would be for your girlfriend to discuss the matter with the reps who are normally at most postgraduate meetings.

Ah thanks for that. You will like Dundee I don't my masters there. It's a nice place n the good thing is everything is close together near the uni/ town etc.

you must be so excited. I'm hoping uhi will come and offer me an insurance place as the woman rang me a few weeks back asking If I'd had offers elsewhere I'd accepted and wanted to remain on there reserve list.that was when I found out I was around the middle of there reserve list. You must have done really well as you got an offer from Dundee then must have been near top of reserve list for uhi. I've accepted a dental nursing place now at college now and will reapply next year.

Dental Hygienist Spain

Hi,
I realise that this reply is a lot later...

Hi,
I realise that this reply is a lot later than your original post.
I have been working as a Dental Hygienist in the UK for over 13 years, and I've worked in a variety of places.
In the last few years you can no longer train as a "mere" dental hygienist, the training is now for a dental hygienist/therapist. However many of the positions available are for dental hygienists.
The salary for a hygienist varies quite greatly from region to region but also from practice to practice.
Many hygienist are on a self employed basis (responsible for paying their own tax, national insurance and don't get paid for holidays or sickness). Their hourly rate is usually a little higher to compensate for this. Hygienist tend to gat paid more if the patients are seen on a private basis, rather than in an NHS practice.
The hygienist may get paid a set hourly rate or they may be paid a percentage of the cost to the patient (again this may seem quite high but this is to compensate for not getting anything if the patient does not attend).
The hygienist appointment time can vary greatly from practice to practice. From 15 minutes per patient at a NHS practice to 60 minutes at a specialist private practice - this also influences the hygienist wages.
At one of the practices that I work at , I have 30 minutes per patient and get paid £32 per hour (regardless if the patient attends or not). I also have another practice that I work at where I only get 20 minutes per patient and I get paid 40% of the takings (potentially £50 per hour if all the patients attend). A few years ago I worked in a Dental hospital - there the hourly rate was £18 per hour - but I had 4 weeks paid holiday, sickness pay and the provision of a pension.
I hope this is of some help to you.

PS your english is very good:)

Hi I am a Canadian, I have the choice between Newcastle and Southampton for MBA. Any pros and cons for either of them in terms of which Companies come there for campus recruiting? I want to get into Mgmt. Consulting.

Newcastle has 2/3 major accreditation and Southampton has 1/3 major accreditation
Newcastle is way up north and not sure if any major companies go there for campus recruiting though but has a much lower fees compared to Southampton. However I am certain that Ernst & Young, Deloitte among other companies do go to Southampton for Campus recruiting.

Any advice?
Thanks

Of course there is fulfilment to be had. I wrote...

Of course there is fulfilment to be had. I wrote a long post on the good points of dentistry. It's here:

http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show...426&highlight=

I did dentistry partly for the financial security yes. Everyone does. Not riches-security and job stability. Well to be honest it's been a hassle from day 1. Worrying about how much you'll make that month, will the boss even bother to pay you and how much will you have to do free of charge? Oh and what happens when the UDA quota runs out?

But I also did it because I was interested in the subject. I still am. I am so saddened by what has happened in the UK. The easiest place to be sued in the world and also very easy to be in front of the GDC over a trivial matter. The market flooded with dentists. Now direct access. Red tape coming out of your ears. Oh and £50K to do specialist training.

All I'm saying is that if someone decides to study in Europe, it shows a grim determination to be a dentist. Being a student in an Eastern European country would be like being stuck in a 1970s time warp. I certainly wouldn't enjoy it. It must be hard. Their motivation is likely to be the same as most dental students-financial/job security, intellectually challenging (sometimes) and a respected profession. With the dental profession in this current state I just don't see the point of putting yourself through it because the life at the end of it is largely like the description above. I'm just telling the truth.

If I were you I would consider saying that you are really grateful for the offer of experience and appreciate that the staff would be putting themselves out. Then say that the placement is valuable to you personally and understand that you are being encouraged to support their nominated charity. Go on to explain that you are a skint student and can't really afford the suggested amount - would they be happy to take you if you paid a smaller donation.
While I can't condone this request, in a way I can understand it. Dentists get loads of requests for work experience and often the only one who has something to gain is the student, if the dentist is giving their time why not expect the student to give a bit.
A suggested donation of about £50 would be more reasonable - this is a lot of money but not much more than a train fare or tank of petrol to go on a Uni visit. Many students spend much much more than this on travel to work experience placements.
Although some may find this suggestion of a charitable donation distasteful not all dentists facilitate work experience out of the "goodness of their own hearts" - many only give work experience to relatives, friends or e.g. as a favour to the child of a member of their golf club!
This placement sounds fab - the donation may be harsh but seems to be worth it!

Thanks everyone, you've been a great help. They have allowed me to do a days work experience for free which is better than nothing I suppose!

Hi everyone.

I was wondering if anyone could share their experience of getting onto/applying for Dental Hygiene & Therapy after completing an Access course with me.

I'm 20 and I've not long qualifed as a dental nurse and am now in the process of applying to start my access course in September. I don't have the best GCSE's; I got 2 B's in English, a C in Maths and a CD in double award Science.

I'm really determined to get onto the course and know it's what I want to do as my future profession but I can't help but feel quite disheartened when I think of coming to apply to uni's as I know there's typically 8-12 places with around 400 applicants at each place and I just think there's no chance for me with my qualifications/grades compared to those coming out of school with A*'s.

So any advice would be appreciated and anyone who's been through it via my route I'd love to hear your experience.

Thanks for ur help. What kind of things would you suggest for the gap year?
Also I plan to take the ukcat pretty much straight away as way to help determine whether i'll apply again.. I had some real trouble with the abstract reasoning, got only 530 in it last year... do you happen to remember any useful tips for that?

I would say to get a job where you would be interacting with people all the time. That'll help your communication skills and finance. Get work exp in dental practices, lab, hospital with maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontics. Get all of them cos it will help so much, I had 2 paragraphs on w.e in my p.s. also vol work with old people so care home for a few months and try asking primary schools to be an assistant part time. Also use medify for ukcat. It requires Atleast a months prep so don't do it straightaway but make sure you do like 4 hours a day for a month - this sounds crazy I know but I know people who did this and one of then got 802! If you really want to do dent, go for it. Apart from that enjoy your gap year, try and do a lot of vol work elsewhere and if you cant find work exp like hospital near you, don't give up, london has many hospitals that offer w.e, stay in London for a week cos it will be worth it, trust me!

Hi

I'm planning to study at the UoL for a BDS undergrad for Dentistry this upcoming academic year and was wondering what the general timetable is like during the first year....
I live nearby so I am still unsure as to whether to move or whether to commute during my first year especially with expensive tuition fees

Any comments re: rough idea of timetable ie days/hours per week of lectures/practicals would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance :)
