Which ones the closest to the dental school?

It would obviously be best if you did everything you could to get the best grades possible across the board. However if you meet their A-level requirements, have good shadowing, extra curriculars and personal statement all you can do is apply and keep your fingers crossed like everyone else!
Might be worth calling the uni's you're most interested in and discussing it with them, they'll give you a clearer picture.

is it easier for english students to study Dentistry in scotland and ireland due to tuition fees?

I know this thread has popped up a lot of times but I was getting slightly unsure about my GCSE grades :/
Im in year 12 atm, I was wondering if my GCSE's match up to standards with other applicants, like not just meet the minimum requirements:

6 A*s (Maths, History, English Lang, English Lit, ICT double award)
6 As (Bio, Chem, Physics, RE, Citizenship, Media)
1 B (Spanish)
1 C (PE)

Ive heard of people with 8-10 A*'s applying :/

Right, I knew there was some kind of ongoing process by which the BDS is "transferred" to their system but assumed it was the USMLE. I know that whichever it was, it pretty much made it unfeasible for her to do. I wonder why it takes 2 years of additional conversion training though? Surely the BDS/DDS can't be that different in content :E

I have read a few comments about some universities considering applications from access course students on a case by case basis - is there any evidence of this?

None of the Uni's I have contacted have indicated anything other than a strict no unless they openly accept them.

Quick questions... Is chemistry hard to get your head around at a-level? I'm not very good at it now (at GCSE) but I'm determined to work hard for a-levels... Also do dental schools really look at your GCSE grades? What grades do you need to get in? Also what would make me a good dental candidate for uni apart from grades? Is there anything that would make my application look even better if I had it on there? Thank you!

Is there any difference between Heathfield and Belmont flats?

Im in year 12 and I know that at the end my teachers will predict my points, these are what Im quite sure they'l give me:

Bio HL- 6
Chem HL- 6
Hist HL- 6

Maths Studies SL- 7
English SL- 6/7
Spanish SL- 6

I'm worried these won't be enough, I have enough work experience and if all being well with my UKCAT and my all round application do I still stand a chance?
Most uni's ask for 36 points and Im hoping for 38 but normally A-leveler's have A*A*A predicted even though the cut off is AAA :/

If you're really eager to get started, my recommendation would be to start simple with anatomy. There are some good videos on the internet, aclands atlas of anatomy is a good one. It's 5 hours of head and neck dissection, if you just watch through it again and again, it will start to sink in and you'll become familiar with the anatomical terminology. Knowing your anatomy in first year can take a big weight off your shoulders as there is a lot to learn and many people find it quite overwhelming.



Aside from anatomy, things get a bit more complex, pharmacology is a tricky one unless you have someone to teach you, so is neuroscience ans physiology. Dental materials is pretty complex too. But i suppose you could make a start on biochemistry.

Search for Kaplan biochemistry on youtube, the videos are very good and you should be listening out for pathways such as gluconeogenesis, ketogenesis, fatty acid oxidation, glycolysis, glyogenolysis etc.



You'll have to wait til you get to uni to really get stuck in with lectures but i'll set you a couple of challenges which should keep you going, and if you manage to master them you'll have a great head-start.

Learn the names of all the cranial nerve and especially the ones which innervate the mouth.
Know the complete innervation of the mouth, sensory, special sensory, motor and parasympathetic secretomotor.
Be able to describe the branches of each of the 3 divisions of the trigeminal nerve.
Know the branches of the facial nerve as it travels through the parotid gland (there are 5)
Find out what the circle of Willis is and why it is important.
Find out what the Brocca and Wernickes areas of the brain are for
Find out what the corticospinal tract does
Find out what gluconeogenesis is and how it is regulated by insulin/glucagon/Acetyl-CoA
Find out how local anaesthetics work, do they block receptors, ion channels or do they act on the brain.
Find out the stages of amelogenesis and describe the differences between the primary and secondary dentitions.
Know the number of teeth in the primary and secondary dentitions and in which order and at around which time they erupt.

Those are just some random questions, but if you can answer them, you'll be doing well :)

You focus on dentistry, apply for dentistry and if you fail to get into dental school then you can take a gap year and reapply with a focus on dental hygiene and therapy. Applying to both together will mean your chances of getting an offer for your back up of DHT will be very low.

They are all the same mate. Dentistry is dentistry no matter where you go. Just need to get one offer and that's all

I was so so excited when the offer came through! My interview was on the Tuesday afternoon and I'll be 18 when we start too :)

If I were you I would consider saying that you are really grateful for the offer of experience and appreciate that the staff would be putting themselves out. Then say that the placement is valuable to you personally and understand that you are being encouraged to support their nominated charity. Go on to explain that you are a skint student and can't really afford the suggested amount - would they be happy to take you if you paid a smaller donation.
While I can't condone this request, in a way I can understand it. Dentists get loads of requests for work experience and often the only one who has something to gain is the student, if the dentist is giving their time why not expect the student to give a bit.
A suggested donation of about £50 would be more reasonable - this is a lot of money but not much more than a train fare or tank of petrol to go on a Uni visit. Many students spend much much more than this on travel to work experience placements.
Although some may find this suggestion of a charitable donation distasteful not all dentists facilitate work experience out of the "goodness of their own hearts" - many only give work experience to relatives, friends or e.g. as a favour to the child of a member of their golf club!
This placement sounds fab - the donation may be harsh but seems to be worth it!

Thanks for ur help. What kind of things would you suggest for the gap year?
Also I plan to take the ukcat pretty much straight away as way to help determine whether i'll apply again.. I had some real trouble with the abstract reasoning, got only 530 in it last year... do you happen to remember any useful tips for that?
