I always used to go to the gym but it closed down so now it means instead of just walking a couple of secodns down the road I have a full 20 min walk :(

Woah thats amazing!!!! How much money have you raised so far??? and I take it your stopping off at places along the way.

That's annoying! Realistically I shouldn't go to the gym, have a forestry right opposite which I could just walk the dog in, I'm just too lazy to try and pick him over the fence to get there :$

Haha thank you! Well I've got around £80 so far, but have a few events like yoga night, pub quizzes and things to do so fingers crossed will get quite a bit from those! Hopefully Chris queen can do some advertisement for the raffle of his books aswel!
We aren't really stopping anywhere, it kind of goes walk to station, train to station nearish, walk to zoo, walk to accommodation (yet to be sorted ) walk to station, train to station, walk to zoo and so on  I've a feeling I shall be rather tired by the end of the week!

Let me add phones would be an excessive cost for a decent one e.g. an iphone which is grossly overpriced by my reckoning. Tablets have wifi connection anywhere- the university has campus wide free wifi so all lecture theatres etc so you wouldn't be paying extra for internet, you'd obviously already have internet at home and most cafes and places now also have free wifi. Your tablet will be a one off cost, a phone is an excessive cost and I think the tablet would suit you much better. A phone is much more likely to get damaged/stolen/ especially nights out. The nexus also has a front facing semi decent camera if you did need photos. Although like silverstar said, it's not allowed and there's really no need to as theres a lot of interactive photos put online for most modules.

I use my tablet a lot in lectures to elaborate. You can also get the blackboard and have access to all the lectures in one place and have your timetable on there too. Sold it yet? Screw lecturers if it helps you. I personally like having the internet in lectures, although I generally just download and annotate the lecture.

Only RVC allows you to practice in North America without taking further exams. The big one you take is the NAVEL, but unless you go to Glasgow or Edinburgh I believe there's a bit more involved. It's expensive though.

However, you can practice anywhere in the EU having gotten your qualification from any of the 7, as they are all EAEVE. I think you can also practice in New Zealand and Australia with your RCVS accreditation which is what you get in order to practice in the UK. I think it's just a case of registering (at a cost??).
Info: http://www.avs-uk.org.uk/working-abroad/info_10.html
On a side note, Kosice has started giving out grad places now :D Accepted mine yesterday!!!

My understanding from answers to questions asked at RVC when I was there at interview was that anybody wishing to practice in the USA will be required to pass state licensing exams, this obviously includes RVC graduates. The explanation given included the diversity of livestock, wildlife, associated diseases and medicinal licensing across the country meant that different states can have very different veterinary operating conditions; any vet needs to demonstrate preparedness specific to that state.

So actually you need to pay both, plus the tuition fees and accommodation :)

So far all I've paid is the registration fee of €185. I then sent off all the documents I was asked for and later received an acceptance letter by email and then again by post. I haven't been asked for €650 to hold my place yet.

Right guys, I have set up the just giving pages,...

Right guys, I have set up the just giving pages, unfortunately I'm not allowed to link them but all you have to do is go onto the just giving website, search teams/zooathon and you should find the page. Or you can search for my name and get it from there. If this fails, pm me! I'll also be posting the link on the Facebook groups so you can access it there, aswel as the Facebook page for vet school!

I have a copy of each book, so vet school part one and two, up for grabs. All you have to do is donate on the zooathon page, make sure you UNTICK the box declaring that you are not getting a ticket, product or service in returns for the donation, and TICK the box that says its okay for me to see your email address. Otherwise I can't contact the winner!

Once you've donated I can add your email address to the raffle book I have at home, I will be updating the page with pictures of the books etc then the day before we set off (14th July) I will announce the winner and the books will be sent en route to Bristol Zoo!

I really hope a few of you are interested and can donate. They are both amazing charities that deserve every penny they can get. :) Thank you for taking the time to read the thread, I hope to be sending one of you the books :D

I was wondering if any current students could give me an idea of times that lectures start in the mornings, and finish in the evening? I'm looking into the best way to commute in, and I'm roughly looking at arriving at half 8 and leaving between 6-9ish (based on my last degree which had lectures all over the place, but a more accurate picture would help :)

Yes, I downloaded the PDF from the RCVS website. The problem is that none of the ones in my local area have any openings and if I go further afield I'd need to leave home which I can't afford (plus I'd need to find a different course provider and make sure it was within travelling distance by public transport since I don't drive). I found an e-mail address for one of the course providers that I tried to ring so I've asked them a few questions in an e-mail - now I'll just have to see if they respond. Unfortunately, the nearest course provider to where I live is actually in a different town which I can just about reach through public transport - so I've only got one option regarding course providers which limits me.

Basically I'll see what the course provider responds with (if they do - they seem quite elusive) and if they are unwilling to take me on whilst I'm not employed within a training practice then I'll have to make Veterinary Nursing more of a longer term career goal since I'm currently unemployed and need to get into work ASAP which means I'll have to take up an admin/retail job and look for openings in training practices whilst I work. It kind of feels like I'm putting my life on hold by doing that which is frustrating. I'm sure I'll find a way of getting into the profession somehow, it just takes a bit of perseverance, research and patience I guess.

It sounds like a good plan although I can appreciate that the situation is frustrating. Once you have your admin/retail job it'd probably be worth learning to drive as a lot of course providers are out in the middle of nowhere and many practices are now requesting in job ads that nurses have full driving licenses

Hiya!

I was curious to know what you think is the best vetmed uni in the UK?

RVC to me seems like a fantastic uni but others disagree. Cambridge is also known to be a top uni for vetmed, but researching on the course it seems more onto the theory and veterinary science side of things.

Looking at league table, I always get different rankings.

So if you're applying or thinking of applying to vetmed for 2014, what will be your top choice and last choice?

Also what do you think about the new Surrey Veterinary School? :)

ALL the Universities produce brilliants vets and all are Russell group unis and there is high employability for vets in general. There is no such thing as the "best" uni. They are all different, and often for applicants, it's more a case of who picks them rather than the other way around - at the end of the day you will go to wherever you get an offer, unless you get a choice of more than one which is bonus.

Cambridge is more heavy on theory or so they say, and some of their graduates seem at a slight disadvantage in terms of practical skills following graduation (as admitted my Cam vets who I've done work experience with). However, I am sure they catch up as I have meet some highly respected Cambridge vets in practise who are doing quite well for themselves.

Surrey is yet to be tried and tested so I don't think anyone can comment on their successes or shortcomings yet.

League tables change quite dramatically from year to year and also between newspapers so need to be taken with a very large pinch of salt. You're better off going to open days to get a better idea of what each uni offers.

I'm sure you'd be fine, those are all high grades. Refer to each unis website for their GCSE requirements just to be sure as they vary a bit. At the end of the day you need to try your best to get the best possible results you can ;)
Also, forgot to mention, but my GCSE, A level and work exp. profile can be found in my user profile (just click my name).

Quick question for people at uni already, how did you decide which vet school was the right one for you? how do you know what the differences are between them, I'm having to choose soon and i have no idea which one I want?

When applying to vet med, it is more about which uni chooses you, rather than which uni you prefer to go to! It is unusual for first time applicants to get offers from all the unis they apply to. So wherever you apply to, be sure you will be happy there if it is your only offer. Best not to pick favourites or get hung up on one vet school to avoid disappointment - I wasn't too sure about Liverpool, but now that I am here I wouldn't choose to go anywhere else!

I found open days to be useful in getting the best feel for things as you get to see the facilities & talk to the students, followed by their prospectus. Uni Stats website might give you come indication on student feedback (though remember things may have changed in 5 years from the time these students gave their feedback). Stay away from league tables - they way they are calculated means they should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Things to think about:

How far from home do you want to live? (for me I would never apply to the Scottish unis as I live in the South and travelling there would be waaaay to expensive for me)

Cost of the location? E.g Liverpool is dead cheap compared to RVC which obviously has London prices (although you'll get a bigger loan to offset this)

Where is the uni campus in relation to the city? E.g. Notts is out in the sticks, but here in Liverpool the campus is a 15min walk from the city centre

What attractions does the city have nearby? (e.g. are you interested in theatre, art, etc.)

What style of teaching would you think suits you? E.g. Notts & Surrey are more practical based and others are more traditional

What facilities does the uni have? E.g. Liverpool has their own hospitals for smallies, equine and farm (with very good reputations) . Others may have better sports facilities etc. if you're into this.

Would you prefer to integrate with other students as well as vet , or prefer to be mostly around vets? E.g. RVC seemed to be just vets everywhere

Entry requirements? Some put more emphasis on academics (e.g. Cambridge), others on practical/team work skills (Notts), others on lots of varied work experience (Liverpool) in their selection process. You may meet some requirements but not others at the time of applying so check this.

Are you prepared to sit an extra entrance exam? (E.g. BMAT is required for Cambridge and RVC applicants)

Yes well I was told to not bother asking until I was 18 by a lot of places, so that's why its a bit last minute and this holiday will be very vet-filled :p Ok well I will do that , although I've had more luck in England than France so far XD But I've found some vet students at the local vet school (which is a very good one but don't want to do classe prepa or stay in France) who said they'd help me.. so am trying to get as many contacts as possible!!
I will definatly do that! Although i often have to email as because of my school hours, by the time I get home its 7pm and too late to call anywhere :/

A bit of a random question but I'm not sure where to ask it.
Can vets have a specialization same as doctors do?

I don't mean anything like 'Small Animals", "Farm Animals", "Equine" etc. etc.
But something more like Oncology, Cardiology etc.

I mean, I know you can specialize in something but is it as official as in Medicine (internship, resident, exams blah, blah blah) or do you just concentrate on whatever you want to do after the 5 years at vet school?

Definitely! All the vet schools have departments I.e. orthopaedic, cardiology, soft tissue surgery, neurology etc. You have to do the internship and residency thing though, and then sit more exams to become specialised :)

Lincoln or RVC for Bioveterinary Science?

Hi, I had the exact same issue last year, I'm...

Hi, I had the exact same issue last year, I'm currently at Lincoln doing Bioveterinary Science and I love it. I got into RVC on results day which was my firm and ended up wanting to go to Lincoln, mainly because of horse riding, but i genuinely dont regret my decision at all. Lincoln is a lovely little city and the accomodation here is better than what I've seen anywhere else with a lot of it having 3/4 sized beds. Also the course is great and from looking at the course content at RVC, i think the course is really varied because of the variety of other degrees here. Also the nightlife here is so much better than I expected when i came here because it is quite small but because the uni is so big in the city, its quite a student-orientated city which is nice. We also have the engine shed where loads of bands and DJs come to play (we've had zane lowe, ben howard and lucy rose amongst others this year). The only things I don't like about lincoln is that sometimes it can be difficult to get to places like london because of no direct trains but it is possible and the level crossings are really annoying but can be avoided!

Hope this helps!

i found that the higher ranked a yard was, the ruder the staff were. obviously this is not the case all the time, but in my area it is. Trent Park Equestrian Centre is a perfect example of the rudest and most over priced stable ever. The owners treated all clients like dirt, and instructors would shout at you for no reason. because it is such a ''prestigious'' place, they forget about their tender love and care for horse and rider, hence why i sold my horse and moved to a tiny yard, which is close to my home and not as well known. but the owners and people there are so lovely. it really does depend on size/popularity!

No problem. :)

I think the eating animals/sending them for meat is a whole other debate. I am a meat eater, BUT I only eat meat sourced from a butcher who has his own abattoir. He never has more than 5 animals on the premises at a time and slaughters them one at a time, very quickly. ALL the animals live free range, 'natural' lives, including the chickens. If I go out and am not sure of the origins of the meat then I eat the veggie option.

I think the biggest problem is that the majority of people are completely ignorant as to what goes on, and they don't want to know because they know it's gruesome. As long as the animal has been treated kindly and lived a life like the animal should, and then been treated humanely at the abattoir then the moral dilemmas are quashed more than knowing that the animal has lived a life in a crowded cage and mass slaughtered.

I really think there are worse things going on in domestic homes than on many farms and abattoirs. Farms etc. are easy places to target by the RSPCA and the like because they are more accessible and due to the sheer scale of the operations. BUT domestic homes are much harder pin point and charge. Did you see Watchdog last night? I would be much more concerned about those horses than most animals going to slaughter today.

Wow... Essay! Anyway, just explaining my justification and views. I feel that we need to tackle many more issues before condemning meat eating, which arguably is an important part of our diet.

Also, yes people use rifles on horses. The problem with horses is that they panic, if they have a bad injury and the vet cannot get to you quickly enough, then sometimes things have to be done. It shouldn't be that difficult, but sadly people do make mistakes. This also makes it harder with the injection, try to make a distressed horse stand still whilst you find the right vein!

I actually went to school with someone a bit like you, she HATED meat eating and had been a veggie since she was 6! People were horrible to her at school, she was very pro animal rights etc and she refused to go to an abattoir before she went to vet school for the exact same reasons; she was 16 at the time. She is just finishing vet school, and has obviously had to go to the abattoir, but she has since ditched being a veggie for eating meat from a local butcher with his own abattoir who deals with his animals in the same way that I outlined above! How things change! Good luck.

Thank you, unfortunately I can not stop things happening in domestic homes, but I will do my best:)

good luck to your friend too:)

I go to an international school in france and Eunicas people came to talk to us about those universities ;)

Basically the entry requirements are so low because some of them base themselves either on your personal statement, on the interview or on an entry tests. Like Lithuania, Slovakia..
and even within Poland, Warsaw as an entrance exam but no interview and Wroclaw has just the interview but no exam!

I think it's just due that they have different educational systems that rely less on exams than we do (I mean if you think about it the whole system of exam is a bit stupid as at no other time in your life you wil have 2h to answer random questions XD) or they rely on their own specific entrance exam.

Furthermore don't forget that they wantforeign students and this makes them attractive to you ;) Personally they are my back up plan but they are quite attractive!

The programs were designed and written by a particular member of staff, as I remember, and he insisted they could not be converted to or written for macs-it was done using a specific pc based program that had no conversion or something.

I have had many computer geek friends over the years and believe where there is a will there is a way, but "No" was the last answer I heard (again, 4 years ago).

As I said even if they still cannot be viewed on macs (and maybe they can) the alternative would be to use a university computer, which all the ones at Bush and I think also the central library are pcs. Before I moved here a friend told my dad that Macs hadn't taken off as much here and the uni was not compatible; don't get one. So I didn't. Meanawhile a classmate of mine asked the uni directly, was told no issues with macs, brought hers, and then couldn't use the programs unless she a) stayed later at school/used 'free time' during the day to access them or b)used an external computer at the central library, Pollock Halls, or one of many computer labs/access points. Having said that I have seen many staff with a mac. So hopefully it is more compatible than it was.

I have a whole lifetime (my lifetime!) of...

I have a whole lifetime (my lifetime!) of experience with horses and still feel like I know nothing, so the best piece of advice I have is don't trust what anybody says, use your own judgement.

If someone says 'Go and take that horse out of the stable and groom it and tack it up' and that horse is putting its ears back, bearing its teeth or turning its back end on you (classic aggressive stance), and you don't feel confident in how to handle the situation then just say. PLEASE don't put yourself in a dangerous situation just to please the yard owner, chances are that she/he is equally as scared of the horse which is why you've been asked to handle it. Hopefully your placement won't be like this, but just a warning because I have heard of lots that are.

Don't approach a horse straight on, always approach from one side or the other. Horses have eyes on the side of their heads and can't see what's directly in front of them, so you'll likely startle it if you walk up to it head on and start stroking its face.

Don't approach a horse with your shoulders squared, looking it straight in the eye, or with a hand(s) held high. The horse will interpret this as an aggressive move and likely move away, or turn its back end on you. Instead walk up calmly and quietly, look down and raise your hand enough for the horse to smell you. Once (s)he has accepted you you can stroke their neck and face.

Never use a dandy brush or curry comb on the face, the bristles are too hard. You're much better off to pick the mud off here with your fingers. Mares (female horses) often have more sensitive skin than geldings (male horses, I doubt there will be any stallions) so keep an eye on how she is reacting to the type of brush you are using. It is always better to use a softer brush and press harder, than using a brush with hard bristles gently (if that makes sense!). I hardly ever use a plastic curry comb or dandy brush. I prefer a rubber curry comb (they are circular pieces of rubber with a handle and small teeth), you rub this over the horses' skin to remove grease and dirt, most horses love this it is like getting a massage. Then I use a brush with long bristles to flick away the dirt, finally I use a soft body brush to polish the coat.

Don't go into a field with more than one horse without someone experienced who knows the horses, until you know all the horses in that field. They might be fine, but you could risk you or the horses(s) getting injured, or letting them all out!

Don't wear strong smelling deodorants or perfumes around horses. These are essentially pheromones, horses are VERY sensitive to smell, so you could be putting yourself in a dangerous situation if you go into a yard smelling like this.

There are very few horses I've met who a genuinely aggressive or difficult, there is nearly always a reason and with correct and sympathetic handling one can 'cure' these problems. BUT please don't put yourself into a situation where you could get hurt just because you want to show willing. Horses can be dangerous and many people just don't know how to correctly handle them.

Enjoy yourself, working with horses is hugely rewarding and they are wonderful animals. There is nothing better than building a bond with a horse.

Finally USE YOUR OWN JUDGEMENT. I know I've said this twice, but it is very important.

Hello!

This thread is for glasgow vet school...

Hello!

This thread is for glasgow vet school applicants of the September 2013 to meet other people in their batch beforehand. :)

So I'll start; I got into Edinburgh, Glasgow, East Anglia. Rejected by Oxford(for the fun of it haha!) and Bristol(complications).
I scored 39/45 in the IB :D

I've wanted to become a vet since 8th grade and prior to that I've always loved animals. I could attribute that to my having pets throughout my life, I enjoy taking care of animals and just being with them makes me happier. I go to vet's clinic in my neighborhood to help out, but now I accompany another vet on house calls, since it's just the two of us there's more space to learn.

So, what's your story? :D

I somewhat disagree with skatealexia...there can be a lot of drug calculations and that sort of thing involved in veterinary medicine, both as part of the degree and once graduated. Nothing too complicated (not exactly algeo or calculus) but still very important. And as she said, there has been a statistics course component (definitely not my favourite). So I wouldn't say you don't have to touch maths.

I agree though to contact the universities. I know at the Dick Vet if you are diagnosed with dyslexia or other form of disability then there are systems in place to help you, such as counseling, support and extra time on exams. I am not sure about consideration of your dyscalculia in your application.

There are multiple threads on this.
It's not the easy option.

You need a 2:1 in your degree, along with relevant A levels and GCSEs. (extracurricular etc)
They also expect a large amount of work experience, a lot of applicants may have long term placements.

If competition for a place wasn't hard enough, you then have to pay the fees.
Currently between £9,000 and £27,000, as you are entitled to no loans for a 2nd degree you must fund this yourself.

I don't want to put you off, but believe me it's not an easy route and it's very expensive.

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this so not sure how much or little i'm meant to write haha. (I also just posted the same thing in a different forum before finding this ooooops :$)
I REALLY would like to be a vet - never been so interested in something ever and I guess its always been my childhood dream... but I went off the idea for a while as I thought you needed maths at a level until literally a month or so ago.
I'm currently studying as levels, biology chemistry and english, however I'm not sure I'm going to get a B in chemistry this year, which im guessing is the minimum I need this year so I can (hopefully) get an A next year. I'm more likely to get a C at as i think... or at least I hope thats the least I will get :|
Also I only have a C at maths GCSE, but otherwise have 5 A*/As in english lit and language, double science and drama. Most of the unis require a B at maths, but is this definitely necessary? I'm not sure how important it really is.

I also am worried I'm not gonna get enough work experience in before applying in september/october time, I currently have done a week at a vets, have another week booked in half term and a week booked at a kennel and cattery in summer. I will obviously need to book some more in summer and for next year too.

Basically, I'm wondering if it would still be worth applying this year (even with a C in chemistry and C in maths gcse) or instead take a gap year after A2 and improve my chemistry grade if I don't get a B this year, gain more experience etc. and then apply?

Any help will be so appreciated x

I think GCSE results are quite strict. You could resit the maths as you'd only harm your chances by having a C, but you could contact the universities individually to ask. There's a fair bit of maths to the course so you'd need a reasonable grasp to understand it.

I would take a gap year/apply the year after instead. I think you'd be risking it with a C in chemistry and the C in maths. Just my opinion.

You need to be aiming for about 15 weeks of varied work experience to stand a good chance. Yes, some universities require less, but most people will have an extensive amount. Remember you need to cover basics of farm, equine and small animal husbandry placements and then both small and large animal vet placements. :).

Hope this helps.

Hey everyone just looking for advice really since i'm completely clueless about what i'm doing. I'm 20 and i have wanted to be a vet for as long as i can remember, unfortunately I've had an incredibly difficult education. Long story short i had to move school in year 4 and was only left enough time to get 6 a-c GCSE by the time i got into another school. Then i had to leave in second year of sixth form due to mental health reasons, leaving me with no A-levels to speak of. I've overcome those hurdles now and i want to get back into education and try to fix my messed up life.

I have no idea if i can even attempt to become a vet since i'm years behind and my qualifications are terrible. I was thinking of maybe redoing my GCSE in chemistry and biology before attempting to do A-levels in them plus psychology, because i have forgotten a lot of the pre A-level work i did 3-4 years ago and i always found chemistry difficult.

I have volunteered in a vet clinic for one day a week, which may be increased to more time in a few months, i also volunteer in a local animal sanctuary. I am not lazy and i'm willing to put in as much time as i have to, but i just have no idea where to start on my studies.

Anyway sorry for the wall of text, any advice is appreciated.

Why dont you look at doing an access course? I am currently doing an access to nursing course and one of the girls in my group has applied to uni to do veterinary and has been accepted in three of them. The access course will allow you to redo your maths and english gcse as well as giving you a level three (A level) in biology, sociology, psychology and IT. As long as you get a lot of work experience, im sure you would stand a good chance. Plus its only a 9 month course so you could apply for uni next year! I know its not ideal but its definitely something to think about!

Hence, it is made to be difficult in order to differentiate between candidates; I ended up feeling pretty crap at the end of it to be honest, but I still got an interview at RVC & Cam. I didn't have time in the exam to answer all questions, to be honest, so if you don't know an answer, go onto the next question! And do lots of past questions to get a feel for everything.

Firstly, here is a great threads full of advise: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show....php?t=2229275

After you find out what you can improve on, then you can figure how to improve your interview performance or think about what you could do differently the next time round.

I'd advise you to carry on looking for work experience. Liverpool (and the other unis) will be wondering how you have progressed during your gap year, and building on your work exp. is one way of showing your dedication, learning more about the industries and profession, and increasing your confidence.

I'd advise you to rewrite your PS and improve it for the subsequent year. Our free PS Helper section on TSR is very good and could give you some useful points for suggestion.

Good luck!

Some unis require more work experience than...

Some unis require more work experience than others - look up their requirements online for various unis (Liverpool require the most at 10+ weeks with most applicants having 15+ first time round. However, others, like Cmabridge, only require 2 weeks but need a better academic profile). As a year 12 student, you have a whole 6 weeks to do work experience in the summer, plus one week in the October half terms, and you could also do lambing over xmas. So you could, if you really tried and was super organised, get up to 8-9weeks of experience before you would get most of your interviews assuming you've not done any experience at all yet. If you could get this amount of work experience, and took a chance to apply to some of the unis where you meet their requirements in terms of work exp. then you might stand a chance, and even if you don't get a place, you would get some useful interview practise for the second time! Choice is up to you, of course.

Obviously fingers crossed that I get the grades. But what do I do if I don't? Can I retake modules and try again? I've heard VedMed uni's don't like retakes. Anyone been in this situation before and know what to do?

Don't worry about this until you get there. Some dislike retakes, true, but others might take you. This should be detailed in their individual prospectuses. I think Liverpool accept retakes so long as you have an impressive work experience list to complement your application, but not entirely sure so you would have to email admissions.

I'll be applying for 2014 entry to vetmed. I did my A-Levels in 2006 in Bio, Chem and Psych, but got D,E,E :(
I'm planning on doing an access to HE (science) course starting in September 2013, this is accepted by some of the vet schools... I have to do really well though. I've already started re-studying A-Level Biology and Chemistry from textbooks to give myself a headstart :P
I remember a lot of it and to be fair... I was predicted A's when I did my A-Levels, I just didn't put the effort in :( so fingers crossed I've got what it takes to get a load of distinctions! (It's a big risk leaving full time employment in a secure job to go to college... So I'll be working my ass off!!!)
I'm just worried that when I apply in October my tutors will not have known me long, and unlike A Levels, I won't have AS grades or predicted grades to give the admissions staff an idea of my academic abilities. Also, if they see my 2006 grades... well... :(
I should be okay from a work experience standpoint too, I've got 2 years veterinary practice work ex, one year kennels/cattery, 6 weeks volunteering abroad with big cats and monkeys, about 5 weeks Livery/riding school/small farm and 2 days lambing. I've got other ideas to do as well but I work full time so its been hard getting this much, I'm having to take things one at a time, squeezing in days here and there.

I just hope I can get to interview stage! I know I'm capable and will do everything to get enough credits to meet the academic requirements... but October is probably too soon for new tutors to be able to confirm this.

I'm so excited... I hope things work out. This application business has become an obsession!!

Hi there, I was really worried about having only been on the course 2 weeks before the application deadline also, I contacted the unis and they told me that they sometimes ask for an ammended reference later in the year and that they understand this is often the case with access students.
It is hard applying without having any time to prove yourself with assignments, I was in the same boat having completed my alevels in 2006 (B, D, D), I was unfortunately not called for interview but am now on track with straight distinctions to try again next time as a re-app.
I know what you mean about being scary leaving a good job to return to study but whatever the outcome it is so worth it :) Good luck :)

Hello,
I have been a student at both...

Hello,
I have been a student at both universities! I did Animal Sci at Nottingham (SB) and my vet degree at Liverpool. Although I didn't attend the vet school at Notts (plans had just been passed to have one as I was leaving) I preferred Notts to Liverpool as an institution. I felt it was much more organised and an environment far more geared to learning and I believe their slightly different approach is superior than more traditional courses.

Last week I was teaching some surgery to the interns at work, one of which was a Notts grad. She was much more practical and knowledgeable than I was as a new grad and she had taken a seven month gap between graduating and starting work. I have to say that I was very impressed.

I think the best thing to do is to have a good think as to what is right for you and where you feel most comfortable. You will have to spend a long time there and it would be pretty miserable and drawn out five years if you didn't like the place.

Hope this helps x

I haven't myself been to one; however a friend told me about the XLVets database, where you can search for a vet in a specific subject area in a given location. I found large animal vets around Edinburgh/Scotland using them. The catch is they book up fast and the dates listed as "free" on the search tool aren't always accurate, so it is best to confirm with the practice and I would say book sooner rather than later. Good luck!

It does seem to use the word "you" which would imply this email is specific to you and you only rather than a generic email. I would say that the feedback appears useful because it was quite specific. You might not feel it is useful because you disagree with it. They might not mean that you are bad at working in a team, just that other applicants were able to work better. You need to look critically at yourself and ask where you could have improved (most of us can improve if we had to do the same again). Good luck for the future.

I have been offered a place on the Veterinary Science course for September 2013. Unfortunately, I think I may have to decline because the fees are so high (I am a grad student). I wanted to know if anyone could give me any advice on sources of funding please? It will be so disappointing if I can't accept it because of money :(

As far as I know, from friends applying for grad vet med there is not funding and you have to self fund it all. Did you not know this when you applied? Or were you not made aware of it during the application/interview process? One person I knew had to prove she had the money to pay for the course before they would even consider her application. As Liverpool are one of the more expensive ones I'm surprised they didn't let you know.
