Not really!

A student like him would not get into Oxbridge, LSE and Imperial.

And prior to meeting him on TSR, I never believed a student like him can get into the next tier of top universities like UCL, KCL, Durham, Warwick etc because I believed those universities were quite selective. But he claims to be in Warwick to my utter shock.

This is not about articulation, it is about basic reasoning. The guy is thinker than Rodney from Only Fools and Horses.

What most of you TSR kids don't understand is that the world is not only about finance. KCL kills Warwick in most other areas of employment and has a higher average salary on average, as well as higher employment figures. The last 10 years of flash from Warwick is not a basis to be laying claims of superiority or greatness. and its reputation is not as strong as KCL anywhere outside UK.

I'm not really sure if you're serious. Do you think getting 6 A* at GCSE and A*AA at A-Level makes you that intelligent? Considering that this coupled with a vaguely decent PS is good enough to get you into LSE and Imperial for most courses. I know a handful of bimbos at Oxbridge, yet one of these bimbos has still managed to secure a grad job in M & A at a boutique bank despite studying Land Economy. Intelligence is a blurry subject.

What areas does KCL kill Warwick in? not finance, politics, even Law is negligible (in regards to actual job prospects, will not deny that KCL's department is better regarded) The difference in average salary is £2-3k, hardly worth mentioning. 6/10 are London unis, which is a factor. I would argue that Warwick is just as well perceived as King's in Europe at least. King's really isn't all that rated in the Asian community, when you're 4th in your own city, it knocks you of your perch slightly. King's is better known, but there is a big difference between recognition and prestige. I would agree and possibly suggest that Warwick's success is likely to be a flash in the pan.

I have just been admitted to M.A Peace and Conflict at LSE. But I also have an offer from King's International Conflict studies.

The problem is the cost. Is LSE really worth paying twice as much as King's? It seems a bit excessive. In the end, is it not the work experience that is most valuable? And certainly, I wanna work for the UN so I probably won't get a fancy job at a private company and see myself starting off at a refugee camp.

Advise me please. All comments and responses are most welcome. Thank you.

What is the perfect course for one person wont interest another person - therefore here is no 'best' Uni for any subject.

As suggested above, read lots of different course descriptions and go to Open Days at a wide a variety of Unis as you can. Work out what areas of the subject really interest you and therefore which course will hold your enthusiasm and interest for three years of study. Dont forget to also look at courses that are similar but called different things - International Policies, Global/World History etc - and look for courses with an integral Year Abroad which will not only be great fun but really assist your knowledge and experience.

Often you dont need to actually buy the books!

Sorry that's not every helpful now you've spent the ££, but in future think about simply borrowing them from a library (on inter-library loan f your local library doesnt stock that particular book). Many books you are required to read, you just read once and never pick up again, therefore. its a waste of money actually buying them. Once you are at Uni you will have access to a massive Library with all the course resources you need. You probably wont buy more than a couple of books during your entire course.

Good websites for books you do need to buy are Abebooks, Alibris, Ebay and Amazon. Many are discount or secondhand - just make sure you get the right edition of the specified text.

Manchester does a law and politics course, and there are quite a few IR modules available.

However, it seems like transferring isn't the solution to your problems: you're lonely and don't like living at home. Have you asked your uni if it might be possible to move into halls for second year? Alternatively you could go for private halls, or even a spare room in a house share. And societies. Join them! And go along!

Hi there!
Im quite biased in my comment because I've been in love with esps from day 1. I don't think any course offers its opportunities.
2.Espsoffers a lot more variety as well which in my case is a very big deciding factor.
3.lindon is an expensive city, top 10 in the world, but there are many students living here, proof that its possible to still manage :)
4. I quite like the city life, it never gets boring and you can try new things whenever you want and can escape quite easily to the greater London country if need be.
5. The financial situation is up to you to decide... Rooming in London is quite expensive but then again, it's probably one of the best, if not the best city in the world.
6. Depends where you would like to live in the future. London and ucl can get you many connections --as I. Sure endinburough can as well, but there are many more people to meet in lLondon

anyway, I'm biased towards esps because I think it's
perfect but you shouldnconsider what you want to get out of your uni experience above all else. :)
hope this helped

Go read the History of Edinburgh, it is older had has more history than UCL.

My brother and lot of my friends with to UCL and they will tell you there is hardly any difference between the two.

Yes. You won't spend 3 years learning the finer details of the benefits system.

Have a look at the modules offered, but its likely that it will include theoretical perspectives, political ideologies etc and will also cover things like criminal justice

I had a look at module description from both unis. Both offer really nice interesting modules (Durham has a bit more modules though). The main difference is that Durham has a range of modules about the Middle East, while Warwick has only one in the third year. I kinda like Warwick a bit more, but can't help wonder whether it is the right choice.

Regarding language, I think I will choose non-credit modules just in case I fails miserably.

Also, Durham is quite far from London. That's not really convenient when travelling from Heathrow. (I am an international student)

I am going to put Sussex as insurance choice any way since its offer is lower than my other choices. Should be a nice place to go if I miss the firm place.

Durham is far from London but I reckon the journey is probably easier than getting yourself to some fields outside Coventry ;)

This is to anyone who has studied/is studying Politics and IR:

How interesting have you found the degree (most/least interesting module)?
Was it worthwhile?
What are you considering to do after you graduate?
How many essays to you get on average per month?

These are probably really vague questions, but i just want some feedback before i (hopefully) start studying it in September. :)

I graduated with a 1st in IR&Pol.

1. Very interesting on the whole- I avoided the bits I thought would be boring!

2. Very worthwhile. Interesting and stimulating without huge stress. I learnt theory, quant&qual analysis and got to meet some really useful people.

3. Since graduation I have been at law school with sponsorship from a law firm. I go to train as a solicitor in September.

4. This will vary from uni to uni. At Oxbridge, you will have one or two a week. At other places, you may only have 10 in the whole year.

Hello!
I'm thinking of applying for a Politics based degree next year (preferable IR/Politics).

I'm wondering if it would be right to mention any of these things on my personal statement as extra-curricular. :)

-EU Mock Council participation

-LSE yr12 Political Conference attended (Begged my teacher, despite being in yr11 at the time)

-Working for MP during Summer

-UCL summer school challenge participation (Riots, rebellions and Political change)

-Extended project (looking at Genocides)

-Local political participation (canvassing etc)

-Reading books such as Plato's 'The Republic' and Monbiot's 'The age of Consent'

Is there anything here in particular that would hold well at Univerisites like Bristol?

Thank you for any help given! :D

Any/all of those would be fine. I'd maybe miss off the canvassing because it points to a political leaning. Whilst this is of course fine, it does lead to the assumption you'll approach your studies with a certain bias.

Sociology Degree?

Most Humanities or Social Science degrees dont...

Most Humanities or Social Science degrees dont lead to a specific career pathway. They are more about learning to think, read, study, discuss on a higher level. That is why you see many graduate job ads asking for 'graduate, any discipline'. So, dont get too hung up on 'what job' a degree prepares you for, at this stage deciding on a subject that really interests you is more important. Good advice on choosing a subject here : http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki/Choosing_a_Subject

However, for clinical work related to Psychology, make sure you check the professional association (BPS) to see which courses are accredited and which are not.: http://www.bps.org.uk/bpslegacy/ac

Read the course entries for both Sociology and Psychology at a wide variety of Unis to get a feel of what each of these courses might be about (no two Uni coutses are exactly the same). Dont forget to also look at related subjects like Social Anthropology, Criminology, Social Policy etc.
