This may be a bit late or irrelevant now but due...

This may be a bit late or irrelevant now but due to my illness, I was offered to stay on campus for the next year. I struggled to find people to live with and then recently I did find people to live with and whilst we get on, we rarely speak and we're staying in a house with an agency which isn't very good (takes them ages to do any fixtures, lots of hidden fees) and I don't know how well I will get on with any of the people in the house. Saying this though, it means I'm covered for next summer (even though I can just move in with randomners in town or stay on campus over the summer) and it means I am close to town and close to my friends living round the corner from me. However, I don't know if it's worth living in town living with people I hardly get on with just for the sake of living in town, when I could live near my lecture halls and the library and be able to do my work efficiently instead of worrying about bills and risky agencies. Then in third year I can live with people I actually get on with well that had already sorted housing before I met them.

Usually if you're put on campus for a second year, they will accommodate you with postgraduates, other health students or reps. Plus you can sort of live the life of a fresher again, meeting brand new people and being invited to parties as well as parties in town or wherever everyone else lives. It's easy to feel left out since all your mates will live all over town, but at the same time you can't give up living somewhere that is safe and all the bills and fixtures are sorted for you asap, especially when there's so many agencies that con students out of so much money.

It's a tricky decision but the way I look at it is, your friends will probably adore living in town for a while until it starts to get colder and they're having to travel in every day or travel in to use the library. A lot of people will appreciate campus accommodation so much more.

Ooo you could try ringing UCAS and ask them to change the option on your application. I'm not sure about University of Manchester specially but my Uni approached me about accommodation through emails and I think most Uni's do (or posts). You could also ring their accommodation number and just let them know the situation you're in and they should be able to direct you from there OR go on their website and see if you can apply for accommodation if it's already open. I hope this helps

Out of curiosity, I wonder if this affects your student finance e.g. will you get less money because you're living at home? :s

I think it depends on what your placement is and...

I think it depends on what your placement is and how noise affects you.

I've been on a placement year this year and working 8-6 but often went into the office earlier to get work done. I would have been really stuck if I lived in halls and they were as noisy as I remember them being in my first and second years regarding sleeping.

I would go for a self contained flat. You won't be a loner as you can meet and talk to other people in flats, and if your on placement you'll meet tonnes of people who you work with.

Are there other students on placement with you? When I found out I got on the placement I asked their HR department to give me the contact details of the other students who had got placements so I could talk to them about moving to the area and possibly getting a shared house. Perhaps this could be an option?

I hate to be negative, but I think you'll get...

I hate to be negative, but I think you'll get placed in a "special" halls of residence - i.e. one for postgraduate or international students.

At Manchester (where I went), they tended to segregate ages like that - even in a "normal" 18yr olds' hall, they would put all the people who weren't 18 in one corridor or building. It depended - sometimes it was age, or people who had taken a gap year or two, or international students, or postgrads.

It's sort of a shame really - I personally don't think age is important. In my halls for instance, all the people who had even only taken a gap year were all grouped together.

I don't think you're too old, many hall tutors are postgrad students who are many ages, and live amongst the students, though whether they mix with them or not is a different matter.

Like above posters have said, it's a question of your circumstances - the uni etc.

It's not a silly question at all. The problem is that the answer is quite complicated.

Most standard undergraduate courses last for 30 weeks, plus 1 week freshers week plus (usually) 4 weeks holiday at Xmas and 4 weeks at Easter.

So an accommodation contract where you had to move out over Xmas and Easter would be 31 weeks, one where you just had to move out over Easter would be 35 weeks and one where you stayed from September to June would be 39 weeks.

51 weeks is only if you are doing a course which carries on over the summer (e.g. a postgraduate masters course) or if you do not have other accommodation to go to (e.g you have no family or you live independently)

So the differences for you are 40 - 43 weeks. It may simply be that different accommodation providers have different lengths of contracts (often "private halls" will have a longer contract) and that you may not need a longer contract - but you may have to take one if you want to choose a particular residence that only offers that length.
However, there may be some courses where you may need to stay longer than the standard undergraduate term, particularly healthcare courses (nursing, radiography etc). Although it's possible that you may not need a longer first year contract if your probable second year accommodation starts at the beginning of July.

You need to look at the dates of the contracts and compare that with your term dates (speaking to your department if necessary). If that doesn't decide it for you, then pick whichever residence you want and you will have to pay the contract length for that residence.

And I know this might seem obvious, but remember that a room at £106 for a 40 week contract is actually cheaper than one for £100 a week for a 43 week contract.

Sorry, that was a bit long!!!!!!:o

So super helpful! Thank you so much! I definitely understand now, and i'm glad you mentioned that health care courses may be longer, i'd never have thought about that. I'm gonna call the university tomorrow to confirm the length of my course. Thank you again!!! :D

I'm trying to apply for accommodation at Plymouth university where I'll be studying medicine. They kept on mentioning 51 week contracts on the post-offer taster day, but the term dates that they have given us fall well short of this and I can't even cover the 40 week accommodation costs with my student finance so I don't really want to waste money on accommodation which I won't be in.

So what I was wondering does anyone from Penninsula know how long we need?
thanks so much :)

I've not really looked at it but are you sure it's done on a direct debit basis? If not then it won't really help. Do you think they could set up a standing order for a certain amount each month?
If your house mates really are a bit feckless then this may not be a bad option, but I do remain slightly sceptical of its worth for the rest of us!

yeah halls are the way to go for you as someone...

yeah halls are the way to go for you as someone said it's £17.50 If you buy in advance that's £87 per week halls are usually that much not to mention the bus fair to get to uni brings it up to about £94 a week which is alittle more than halls then you will gwt tired travlling trains will be cancelled or delayed and then there train strikes which means you will be late or miss lectures and what if you have a day that looks like

9am-10am lecture
Free (up until 8pm)
8pm-9pm lecture
This does happen it happened to me you won't really want to be travelling back after that and where would you go in that big free block sure you could go to the library but you couldn't spend all your time there your mind would explode
an your social life well being 1 hour 15 minuets away lets face it you wouldn't have one. Your time at uni would be very lonely many home students have said this. You also wouldn't save much money as traveling n this situation would cost as much as if not more than halls which include bills and internet connection really for your own sanity go to halls

Due to my student loans being suddenly cut off I had no money, and couldn't get back to University to collect my belongings. (I was informed of my removal from the course in december whilst I was at home for the holidays)
So I didn't get the rest of my things until February. Now my uni is telling me I owe them £860 for the time that my room was being used to store my belongings

Everyone does it differently - in my house we divide the rent by the number of rooms, but the bills by the number of people. Everyone has always been fine with this, as couples do use more energy than one single person because they both need showers, to wash their clothes etc.

I think you need to sit down with them and call a house meeting

I'm fairly lucky because in my house next year, I'm in with my two closest friends, my fiance and three strangers, but all electricity and bills are included in the price - however, I'm sharing with my fiance and we're paying £130 a week, so £65 each, compared to everyone else paying £90 a week, so if it wasn't all included I'd be worried that people would resent us for it or ask us to pay more. Our landlord has said that whereas everyone else pays £80 to cover all washing, we'll pay £120 between us - because although we'll use more than one person, we won't use as much as two separate people as we'll wash clothes together.

I echo that there needs to be a house meeting OP.

Hi, We just had a guy from Tenants Deposit...

Hi, We just had a guy from Tenants Deposit Claimline knock on our door and convince us all (our house of 6) to sign up with them. They said that landlords are supposed to protect your tenancy deposit when you first move into their house, but if they haven't sent you a certificate telling you that they've done so within 30 days of you moving in, they probably haven't done it. They said that this is the case for 92% of people they sign up, and so these 92% are entitled to compensation - up to 3x the original deposit. On the website it says that if anyone opts out, then a claim for that household cannot go through, so now that I've signed up, it's not going to go down well if I pull out. But now I'm regretting signing, mainly because I don't know what the fee is if we do have a claim, although I imagine it's substantial. Our landlord did not send us the certificates, an inventory, a gas safety record when we first moved in, but over the course of our tenancy he has not been problematic. I don't know who I should trust. I just wondered if anyone else had had any experience with Tenants Deposit Claimline, or a similar company, or had any advice for us. Thanks.

Oooh no. Universities that ask you o apply if it's your insurance won't usually allocate you a place until they know you're definitely going there. And so shouldn't ask you for a deposit.
I'm fairly sure that no university would ask for a deposit in those circumstances but if it seems like they are doing, ring and speak to someone. Don't pay it unless it's clearly refundable (and if it is, what's the point of them asking for it?)

Hi :)

I've chosen my first option as York St John and I'm rather nervous about moving from home to a new part of the country. Somebody offer advice?

How long does it usually take before you get to know people you share accommodation with? Is it not awkward if you have to share a bathroom? Silly questions like that.
I can't wait to get away and start again but at the same time, I'm pathetically scared!

I'm going to York St John too hopefully to study physiotherapy! What are you studying? Yeah i'm pretty nervous too, but it'll be really exciting meeting new people etc :) I've not a clue what accommodation to apply for or anything tho! I want to find out where others on my course are going :)

It's worth checking the contract for details. But generally, if you've signed a contract for a year, you have to pay for the year whether you are there or not. You may have a break clause, allowing you to end the contract early, but this wouldn't guarantee you could come back next year. Also, if you have signed as a group, you may impact on the other people. You should check the rules about sub-letting, as that may be the best bet.

I've asked my roommate that studies law to read over the contract, actually. :)
I'm pretty sure me leaving won't impact my roommates, though. We've veeb told that we rent per room, and someone leaving for whatever reason would never increase the amount of rent that we pay.

I'm the same!

I am actually very sociable and like to go out but I won't be drinking really or going to clubs. I will go out to the student bar and other bars but I know personally (from past experience) if I start going out a lot to clubs I won't apply myself properly to my work! If people don't want to be my friends for it then fine. Don't ever do something you don't want to just to fit in.

And anyway I'm sure if you join clubs etc where people have the same hobbies and interests as you, you will actually make some TRUE friends who could well be friends for life if your lucky... rather than just drinking buddies who you will probably forget about because all you have in common is drinking.

I'm sure everyone will be very accepting of each other no matter what you want to do. Also if you happen to not make friends with anyone in Halls, or even in your Uni, take a look at local clubs and things you could join and I am sure someone will be out there who can be your friend! :p

So I've lived with most of my housemates for the...

So I've lived with most of my housemates for the past 3 years and we're all good friends (there's 6 of us) but they have really upset me recently about how unreasonable they're being.

We decided to get a house together in 2nd year after knowing each other from halls and managed to find somewhere we all liked and could afford. To decide who gets each room we numbered the rooms and drew numbers out of a hat, as we had a spare room in the house (inc at no extra rent), we said that the person who got the slightly smaller room could also have the spare room (effectively meaning they have the most space overall). This all worked out pretty well (especially as it turned out those of us who had the small rooms in halls got the slightly bigger rooms) and everyone was happy. The person with the small room didn't really use the spare room in the end apart from a wardrobe, this was her choice not to use it.

The next year we all stayed together except one housemate who left for a year abroad and another who joined (who we all already knew and got on with). We had trouble finding a house that we all agreed on (one housemate is very picky and 'apparently' doesn't like big rooms), after spending ages looking around I ended up compromising on a house I didn't like as all my other housemates liked it (the condition of this compromise being that when choosing next years house I wouldn't have to make the concessions). It was then decided that one person should get the reasonably large downstairs room because she has a big amp to carry around for gigs, then the people with the smallest rooms got first pick (which was the new housemate and the picky housemate who got the two rooms last year). Although originally the rest of us were going to draw rooms from a hat, I am told that one housemate has been allowed the ensuite room because him and his gf (another housemate) can both use the bathroom so the main bathroom is not as crowded (whilst I can understand this point, I still feel it a little unfair that being in a relationship gives him that advantage). Eventually I end up with the box room (being a little annoyed that I neither like the house nor room), I express that I am annoyed about how things were sorted but accept how things turned out.

This year when looking for houses (two housemates leaving, two of friends coursemates joining us - have met a few times and they seem nice), we had set a maximum budget of £60pw (rents previously were £53 and £55), despite this budget numerous viewings had been organised for more expensive houses, which wasted time as I could not afford them, for some reason my housemates were in a hurry to sign (by november - 9 months or so before we'd move in) and told me they wanted to sign a maisonette which was £62, I viewed the property and did not like it (small and there were a lot better houses for the money), I reminded them of our agreed budget and reiterated what I had said last year when I signed for the previous house, they said there was no other option and that I was being unfair for making a fuss. I have hated this house this year and have looked forward to a new one so I stood my ground and said that it was someone else's turn to compromise. They ended up signing for this house anyway (knowing that I'd probably have no other option or that they would be able to find someone else to), a few months later after having tried to find an alternative living situation I had to give in and agree to signing with them.

Thinking that I would at least get first pick of rooms as I had the smallest this year, I was then told that we weren't doing that this year as we have 2 new housemates so it wouldn't work (the housemate that decided this incidently was the one who got first pick this year - obviously knowing she would've ended up with one of the last picks). I told her that we did the same last year with a new housemate and that just because the rooms are in different houses they can still be judged by size (as was done before). I feel so angry and don't know how to sort this, it would be unfair to have different prices for different sizes as we have not done this in the past (especially as this year one housemates room is 4 times the size of mine and both have been the same rent). I know that I will probably lose in this situation again, as that housemate is quite controlling and will ensure everyone else is on her side.

I feel so hurt, these people are my best friends and we get on so well almost all the time, I can't understand how they can be okay with twisting things and breaking agreements just for their own apparent personal gain. What hurts the most is that the one who is the most controlling is the one who I would consider my best friend at uni, she is the only one that knows about a problem I have that has caused me to be quite unhappy at times, yet in spite of this has caused a situation which is obviously going to cause more stress and unhappiness.

Please let me know if you think I'm being unreasonable, I know it may just be a room, but its that my best friends seem to rate getting their own way above a friendship.

(Sorry for the long post, needed to vent my frustrations)

Although a lot of the reason for restarting from year one would be to get that uni atmosphere. obviously that's much harder if you aren't in a place with any other students :S
Gah, I'm so confused with what to do! I wish they could give me more of an indication as to whether I'll certainly get accommodation with King's or not. It hardly seems fair that 1 year at another uni means i shouldn't get any guarantee of any accommodation :'(

I was wondering if anyone could share their experience of what it's like in halls as an older student. I'm not that old but it does worry me that I cant keep up with the young 'uns these days..........

Thank you :)

If your partying days are over and you want peace and quiet I wouldn't recommend going into halls with freshers however most unis either offer quiet halls or postgrad halls or both which might be better options.

Don't be an ********.

You don't want to ruin your revision, your landlord is asking for you to let him walk somebody around your house for 10 minutes, he's not saying you've got to stop working for 5 hours to talk somebody through every square inch of your house.

Chances are that you wouldn't even notice him taking anybody around the house, unless he knocked on your bedroom door to see if somebody could have a quick look, in which case you'll be disturbed for about 10 seconds as somebody pops their head around your door, glances at the room, and leaves.

Also, if you refuse this then I wouldn't be at all surprised if your landlord starts looking for any reason to deduct parts of your deposit, it's exactly what I would do, as if you're going to act like an ******* and tell him he can't show anybody around then I would decide to act like as much of an ******* back to you.

I wouldn't put it quite like this but maybe you can arrange a time for people to view when you normally have a break from revision? I can see where you're coming from though, if 10 people come to look at the house on the same day it could get quite distracting....

Hello, I'm new...and have a question to ask. I'm currently a first first year at university and we've put a holding fee down on a house, and I was then informed that my guarantor didn't qualify because she wasn't a homeowner, and my parents aren't allowed to be one due to the fact they're in debt management. I've asked everyone to be a guarantor for me, and the only other possibility is paying the whole years rent up front (which is £5, 300) which for a student isn't possible. Can you suggest anything else for me? I don't want my housemates to lose the house

I've moved to Amsterdam with work and have an apartment available for rent during the summer.

Was working in Canary Wharf which is only 10-15 mins by bus from the apartment (277 or D7).

Dead easy to get into Liverpool st too by central line (about 10 mins).

Would be for 3 people though. Let me know if you're interested!
As an example, Manchester allows both those who are on foundation courses, and those who live very close to the university to live in halls (indeed, it guarantees a space).

- When I went to the post offer day for Bristol and we got a tour of the campus, the girl said that they don't really use the Student Union as it is a bit out of the way, whereas in Sheffield it seemed like the Student Union was a central hub for socialising/working/eating etc. What is the student union like at Bristol? Are there good, modern facilities? If not, is there a big space where everyone hangs out?

You'll find that this is quite common in unis that are large and city-based. It's purely the case that there are other places available for students to go to, and so there is less necessity to use the SU. It's certainly the case at Manchester (where the SU is directly on campus) and when I visited Loughborough (campus uni on the outskirts of a small town) for an open day when I was applying they said that the SU was very active... and there was only one club in town. You'll find that at Bristol people tend to meet up with each other in halls, cafes on and close to campus, and bars (especially those in the Park St / Triangle area).

Bristol's SU has recently had a big refurb, but I haven't actually been inside (I'm a local, not a student at Bristol) so I can't comment on it.
