Hi! the money of the Fundraising goes to support the ICS programme, and allow more national volunteers to take part in the programme.
You will not be asking people to pay for your holiday: you will not be on holiday, you will be working hard for local communities. For free.
Plus your placements costs a lot more than that, so it's just really a contribution from people who want to support you and make this happen.

Hi, thanks for your answer.

What is the benefit of the ICS programme? Other than to me and others like me, if the money is just going to pay for British people's flights etc? Does it benefit the people you're volunteering with in any way? There's a lot of stuff going around about 'voluntourism' which I'm sure you're familiar with, just curious as to what the organisation's position on this is?

It does look like a really great programme, the fundraising thing especially. I would be 120% up for fundraising for the communities that you volunteer with in the host country, but I'm not sure if I would feel comfortable asking people to give me money for it; I understand it's not a holiday but I think a lot of people would percieve it as so, plus I'm struggling to see who the beneficiary of people's money would be if it's not me/other people on the ICS programme?

Through Girlguiding Scotland, I had the chance to go to an international camp, and mentioned that on my personal statement, as I was interacting with foreigners (a bit more practical than teaching.)

If you could get/had a pen pal then that could also be worth mentioning. :)

Aside from that, it's also a good idea to mention why you're interested in French, and what you think you'll gaining from studying French. :)
Hope that's of some use.

I've been looking into setting up a charity myself though I don't know much about setting up a charity in a professional way, would it be possible if we could exchange details so I can ask you for advice? I would like to set up a woman empowerment program in order to provide female Syrian refugees with skills, resources and support that would enable women to become more financially secure alongside an initiative that provides scholarships for foundation and undergraduate degrees for Syrian students.
Any advice you could offer, would be extremely appreciated :-)

I got an email in early April for transport, which was my second preference.

A little disappointed that I didn't get spectator services, but the transport role involves the media, officials and athletes, so the chance of getting a glimpse of Tom Daley (such a fangirl) is still a possibility!

My interview is on 18 June, so flying up from London the night before. Any of you from Glasgow and have any good recommendations for things to see, places to eat at?

I did read somewhere that they are sending interviews out very slowly. Gmail put the confirmation email into my spam filter; so it may be worth checking that. Good luck to everyone else!

Hi You should go on the veterinary medicine forums, theres loads of us on there and loads of current students and prospective students (like me) who are always willing to help and give you advice.

Though to answer your questions to become a vet you need to go to university for 5 to 6 years (depending on which unis you apply to and what course you decide on as some are aimed at people who haven't taken A-levels) to get more info on grades and stuff you need to look at all the vet schools websites but generally its 3As (sometimes an A*) at A-level.

Most people applying aim for what liverpool asks when it comes to work experience, this is 10 weeks work experience with 6 of it being husbandry (farms, catterys, kennels etc) and 4 weeks vets (must me at least 2). The core work experience most people advice is, Small animal vets, Large animal vets, lambing, dairy farm, cattery/kennels, something to do with horses (riding schools and those sort of things and pig farm (if you can find one). Though its good remember that most applicants will have more than 10 weeks and people (like myself) have applied multiple times so will have lots of work experience so its best to have as wide as variety as possible.

Hope this is some help :)

I'm not entirely sure, although I guess it depends what you'd be doing. I think medical work experience can be hard to get for any one under 16 and then there's stuff like patient confidentiality to consider. You'd be better off asking the place you're applying. Sorry I haven't been much help, but one thing I will say is do some work experience closer to Sixth Form/ college if you're planning on doing some vocational afterwards as places such as universities will be looking for recent extra curricular activities.

Well, I've spoken to someone who did work...

Well, I've spoken to someone who did work experience there and she said that they got her to write a few stories for the paper! So I wanted to be prepared just in case...

Shadowing journalists would be great experience though!

As I'm not exactly 'well connected', how could I go about finding out about anything different? The newspaper itself has a website but of course, what's contained on their website isn't going to be different.

I've read about that a lot - pitching an idea to the editor. The idea makes me feel nervous and I'm not even entirely sure I'd know how to pitch an idea!? What's expected? A conversation? Notes? A powerpoint!? I wouldn't know what was even considered worthy enough to pitch...

I know I probably sound like a complete newbie - and to be fair, I AM! Ha but any help (the more details and pointers, the better!) would be massively appreciated! Thank you

That's great that you're nearly there! Have you got any work or business contacts that might sponsor you towards your final bit of fundraising?

I've hit my target now so just looking forward to going out to Tanzania in the summer now, climbing Kili and visiting a school which is funded by the charity... then coming home to graduate, eek!

When do you head off to India? Do you know what kind of projects/work you'll be involved with? I know two people who've recently finished projects with ICS, one in Kenya and one in Nicaragua, sounds like a brilliant experience!

I'm busy these days so I'm gonna finish it off after next week. I'll be back home and working where I can talk to customers in the pub I work at.. I'm hoping to get that, if not I'm going door-to-door. I don't have it in me to organise any more events.. maybe a pub quiz.. lol.

My events never really raised a lot of money though if I'm honest. I mean added together they did but as single events people wasn't to generous.

24th of June I'm off! A large part of it is water sanitation projects but it could be a number of things, working in schools, building in other communities. I don't find out till I'm there, which is exciting.

So you're not an ICS project are you?

Hi Guys, I've written a letter to gain some work...

Hi Guys, I've written a letter to gain some work experience because I wish to apply for Medicine after this course. Could you guys tell me if it sounds right? Don't be afraid to be critical :)

Dear Dr *****

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED – SHADOWING A DOCTOR

I am writing to you regarding a temporary work placement to shadow a doctor.

I am 19 years old and am currently a 2nd Year student at University of Manchester studying Bsc(Hons) in Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry. With completion of this degree course I am looking to apply for Medicine and start a career as a doctor. Studying Chemistry combined with a subsidiary Maths course at University has given me the analytical skills and problem solving skills to becoming a doctor. The Medicinal part of my course has given me an insight into the pharmaceutical and clinical departments of Medicine which has further instigated the desire to carry out a career in Medicine.

Therefore, to gain a further insight into the career of a doctor, I believe that working with a doctor and observing the everyday tasks around a doctor’s life will be very beneficial for me. This will allow me to note the challenges a doctor needs to face and will prepare me for my future career. I am very enthusiastic about Medicine and the course has always been of interest to me. I believe that a career in Medicine, for me, is the best way forward. Therefore, gaining work experience in the Medical field will confirm this belief and help me to proceed on this path.

I have, also, applied to work for the NHS as part of their voluntary ‘Ward Duties’ scheme at Name Hospital in Location. This will allow me to experience the caring and communicational skills that are vital for a doctor. Ward Duties will allow me to engage in conversation with patients and tend to them. Being a doctor means that a good caring character is necessary and this experience will allow me to offer my caring nature. Also, communication is a key skill for a doctor therefore my communicational skills will be further developed when working at the hospital.

With my extensive research, I understand that working in the Medical field as a doctor is a very demanding career and being flexible is a priority in this profession. Medicine is a subject that requires pure dedication and motivation, which is what I am willing to offer to this career. I hope that this letter has shown my passion and thirst for the subject.

I appreciate the time you have taken to read this later and I am hoping that you will offer me a work experience placement to shadow yourself. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely

Johura Alom

Hi, I'm 16 and am looking to do some volunteer work abroad this summer for a reasonable price! I was wondering if anyone was planning on doing some volunteering to do with law or human rights because I'm looking for a volunteering buddy!
If you'have been before, are there any companies you recommend going with that aren't to pricey?

Thanks,
Samantha:)

My friend completed his world challenge and he went to India. :) He did a lot of sponsored sporty stuff to raise his money and had a great life experience raising the money and spending his time in India for a month.
A lot of people on the course dropped out though so only about 5 of them did the expedition. I guess it was tough but well worth it!

There is a really awesome organisation I have volunteered with before in the summer for a few weeks. It's one of the cheaper ones I could find, and I believe they have some animal conservation trips. (Being cheap it doesn't mean they're a really bad, disorganised company, they's the opposite). I volunteered with children and it was so much fun, you meet great people and get to travel. They are called 'Original Volunteers' :) If you have any specific questions about it let me know!

I used to run a music blog which was receiving a good amount of views per month from me writing album reviews, artist reviews, just informing my readers of new music basically. My main audience was chart type music so pop, R&B and rap but sometimes other sorts of music and upcoming artists from any music genre.

I've let the blog slip but now want to get it back running again. I was wondering if anyone is interested in writing some articles? The more the merrier really. If there's anyone interested in music, I'm happy to discuss ideas and I'm open to any articles being published. I simply just need them sent to me for me to then publish (with your name at the bottom!) This could be great for any budding journalists looking for experience and something to put on their CV. There may also be the opportunity for regular bloggers if I'm impressed with the articles!

Thanks!

So, I have an informal volunteer interview for admin position at NHS hospital and was wondering what I might be asked at it. Since it's informal, I expect to be asked why I want to volunteer here, what I can bring to the position etc. Does an informal interview means I have pretty high chances to get the position? It's only few hours a week and I really really want to get it.

Are there any other questions that they might be asking? Like general one 'What do you know about us' or 'tell me your strengths and weaknesses'?

I'd really like to participate in some type of volunteering work for around 1 hour a week, is their any places that would take someone who is 14?

This was posted from The Student Room's iPhone/iPad App

Lots of places with nowadays. Just contact a local charity working in a field you're interested in, and they might have something for you. Pick somewhere easy to get to, unless you've got really kind parents who won't mind driving you there every week!

Just a note- if you want to do first aiding (as someone else has mentioned) I would choose the St J's Ambulance, rather than Red Cross, as you can be 14 to go out on duty with the SJA, but you have to be 16 with Red Cross (although you can still join a group and have training before then).

I'm 14 years old and I'm looking to volunteer and I'm willing to do anything! I've volunteered at my local riding school for 3 years so I know how to interact with the public professionally from aged 5-55, but now I just want some new experiences so I welcome any ideas! Thank you!

If you want a real hands on experience while dealing with the public and possibly going to live events, look no further than the St John Ambulance First Aid team.

Depending on your young age, you will either be part of the Beaver team or the Cadet team. You'll learn first aid and be part of a team who may attend any number of events.

What's good about joining SJA at a young age is that the transition from Beavers to Cadets, then Cadets to Adult First Aid is seemless - attend and induction and you're good to go.

It's also extremely well known, promotes and teaches essential first aid skills (do you know what to do if you find a baby choking?) and has many different areas you could go into (cycling response team, emergency response team, trainer, trainer assessor, etc.).

If you want to know more, do ask the St John Ambulance thread or phone them! They're always looking for new volunteers.

Good luck!

I got there to the meeting 5 minutes early and when 8:00pm came around nobody had turned up so someone guessed it had been cancelled, but I was annoyed as nobody had contacted me to tell me this instead of wasting a journey. Maybe next week.

Oh dear - I hope it happens this week round!

Mine was quite lovely. Most of the people were really jokey and happy - we talked about the London Marathon and what types of injuries we'd come across.

I say "we" incorrectly, because I'm not a First Aider yet so I wasn't allowed to join! :(

But yes, so I joined that unit and hopefully I can get some training underway! :)

Battersea
Last Chance Animal Rescue in Bromley
Cat Cuddles Sanctury in Greenwich
There are a few in Kent, like Foal Farm in Biggin Hill and Retreat Animal Rescue in Swanley but they are hard to get to via public transport
