I'm sure mine doesn't - I've only seen her once. Why should it matter? I'm a doctor but not a GP, I only remember a handful of previous patients' names. I remember faces quite well, or clinical stories, but only a few names stick with me.

The average GP has over 1000 patients on their list - from my experience I'm impressed by what they DO remember!

Mine does mostly on the day, with a small number...

Mine does mostly on the day, with a small number pre-bookable, but you usually need a specific reason to pre-book, e.g. follow-up appointments, scheduled vaccinations, etc. In general, I have to call at either 8am for morning appointments, or 11:30am for afternoon appointments (miss it by 5 minutes and you'll miss all the appointments).

Given the booking systems they have to use, and the number of patients being managed by each surgery, I can understand why they do 'on the day' for the majority of appointments. They need to keep most of the spaces available for people who become ill on the day, because most people do want to see a doctor on the same day that they become unwell, whether it's to obtain a sicknote, receive medical assistance, etc. The assumption would be that if you don't need to see the doctor today, it's less of an emergency, so availability of 'urgent' slots has to take priority. It's also ten times easier from an administrator's point of view.

Please, as a diabetic, never buy us "diabetic" anything. For Type 2s, they shouldn't be touching chocolate anyway as their management is usually diet controlled although if they have chocolate it's best to stick to dark. For Type 1s, a lot of us learn to adjust our dose of insulin to what we eat. Both normal chocolate and diabetic chocolate have almost the same amount of carbs in them and all get broken down in to sugar so we're going to have to have a high dose for them anyway. Would rather do a dose for chocolate that's not going to give us the sh*ts.

If you go to your GP they may advise you about...

If you go to your GP they may advise you about what medication you can take to promote hair growth. I know that people take Biotin which is a b vitamin to grow and thicken their hair.

This has been known to promote hair growth, and it comes in a range of strengths from 300mcg to 5000 mcg... just do your research online about the suppliment and its effects...

If you go on to youtube there are many videos discussing Biotin and b complex vitamins and their results. From what i have read it is best to take them together...

Additional factors such as not washing your hair everyday and scalp massaging 2-3 times a day, restricting heat use, and reducing use of products such as hairspray will promote hair growth...

But if all else fails, dont be worried about your hair loss and dont let it knock your confidence

Hope this helps...

I AM NOT ALONE! FINALLY! omg happy! Its not just me! i have the EXACT same problem! I have exams now for the next three weeks and i hate going to the toilet during the exam so i go about 4 times before the exams! and during school time, my friends go once or not at all and i go every single break we have! I've posted a thread on here ages ago and everyone who replied back said it was stress or anxiety! So i think it is stress! If i dont think about going to the toilet, or if i forget then i dont need to go but if i think about it or if someone talks about it or brings it up then ill have to go! It drives me mad! I understand if im on or something because thats understandable but it annoyes me when im not on. Grrr! But at least im not alone now!

Not sure why I did it anonymously to start with...it's not THAT embarassing haha

Okay well I did a little research on how much you're meant to drink in a day and apparently it's only 1.2 litres according to the NHS! So I measured out how much my glasses at home will hold and they're about 450 ml, so I've actually been drinking between 1.4 and 1.8 litres a day. So I'll try drinking less and see what happens!

Maybe you should do that too? Measure out in a measuring jug how much one of your glasses can take and by how many you have in a day and see if you're drinking too much. If not then you might have an overactive bladder like I thought I might.

In the meantime, do you find you go to the loo loads all the time, or just when you're nervous? I find it's all the time.

I do like my clothes a little tighter than most - my weight and chest indicate that I should be more of a 10-12, but I find baggy clothing uncomfortable. I used to have a problem with weighing as much as I do, but I've come to realise that a lot of it is muscle as I do a lot of exercise/sport..... and that that's okay! :D In fact, to anyone who's reading this: stop weighing yourself once and for all and simply look at your dress size as a measure of size.

I'm not an expert but it looks like you have may have sub conjunctival haemorrhage, which is basically a rupture of the fragile blood vessels in your eye. It has quite a lot of causes, mine happened merely due to a very violent sneeze, so don't fret too much over it. It's not a major problem but see your opticians to get it checked out. Did your eye look something like this?:

I have to have another MRI scan next month, and I had two just over a year ago. I was wondering if there are any adverse effects to having more than one MRI scan? Do they use radiation? They've all been on different parts of my body, but I've also recently had three x-rays.

The full name of an MRI is a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Image (they don't call it that though as people hear the word radiation and freak). But it doesn't involve ionising radiation, and there are no known side effects. They have a negligible risk factor, compared to an X-ray its infinitesimally small. Only issues could be if you have a pacemaker, are claustrophobic or wear metal in to the scanner (as it's an enormous electromagnetic which will attract metal objects very strongly).

OP, you really need to go back to the doctors and get this checked out further. It could be something like PCOS or endometriosis (the former could be contributing to your weight problems) See a different doctor, (have you been seeing the same person each time) or change GPs if you have to.

Trust me, after 9 sprains on one ankle, and 13 sprains, a fracture and 2 operations on the other, I know what it's like!

A few weeks off football, a bit of ice and ibuprofen if it hurts, you should be fine in no time :)

I'm back taking it again at the moment but am only up to 20mg as I keep forgetting to ring my doctor :/ I would suggest that unit is making you feel that bad speak to you doctor about coming off of it or lowering it until after your exams then being playing around with your meds, but suggest nortriptyline as I find that it helps to level out my headache and the only side effect I get is tiredness when i first started taking it or when I up it.
hi there the side effects ceased after a few hours however throughout the day i felt weird and the headache was slighly worse, but my muscles seem like they are melting which is probably a good sign. idk but hopefully overtime they become looser. the medicine is supposed to relax muscles, i think i can see it happening. However the headahce is still very bad. This is only first day, however i dont know whether to risk taking it tonight as i will probably have a few hours of really feeling ill tomorrow and i need to work for exams.

also one of my teachers showed us this video of zooming out from the earth through all the solar system and all the galaxies and all the galaxy clusters and then at the end he said 'you know the universe doesn't care what you get in one tiny exam on this tiny planet' ahaha it was so cheesy but so cute, and if I get stressed I actually do think about how out of 7 billion people in the world there are about 5 (if that) who really care how I do in these exams and those 5 don't have a clue what the exams involve :)

Rang up the surgery this morning, told them some very graphic very exaggerated symptoms that they didn't really want to hear and they said a Doctor would ring me back. Got a call twenty minutes later, actual conversation with the GP lasted less than a minute and he actually asked me what antibiotics I wanted to use... On the other hand, went in and picked up my prescription just now, and checking it when I get home it's 14 days worth rather than 5, which is what he said it would be for on the phone...... Sod's law that I woke up this morning and felt a million times better than I did yesterday. Started the course anyway though! Think this shows that there are appointments since the receptionist said that the GP would decide if I needed a same day appointment (nothing available for three weeks my arse) and all you need to do is ruin the receptionists breakfast by telling them you're pissing blood. :) Thanks everyone!

I know I don't know what you look like but from what you've said I don't think you're ugly but you probably think this due to not really socialising. You could try going for long walks to start off, which will bring a bit of colour to your skin if summer ever starts lol and help get you back in shape. The gym would also be good and probably a good place to socialize. Also don't think you only have 2 close friends, when it comes to friends it's about quality not quantity so that isn't bad going :P

Yeah. I've been eating things which i think would be fairly calming for my stomach. Tortillas (Instead of bread, we have none), a banana (Apparently the potassium is good for upset stomachs) and my lunch was a Pot Noodle (Mainly because it will have a fair amount of water, will settle better than just drinks of water would).
Most women think they have to be really skinny to be attractive, when the reality is that men tend to like curvier women who tend to have bigger thighs.

I think you might be being overly paranoid about...

I think you might be being overly paranoid about it.

I went through a huge phase last year of thinking I smelt really bad and showering compulsively and trying different deodorants, but there was always this one class where I could smell myself really badly! In the end I asked my friend to sniff me.... turned out it was a guy in the class that smelt so bad he stunk out the whole room. You could tell he didn't wash his clothes or shower regularly because his clothes were always creased and his hair was always greasy.
Basically, if you've asked someone to be honest about if you smell, then you probably don't.

My main advice on personal hygiene is that washing once a day is best in my opinion, I think twice a day is a bit excessive. Also make sure you're using an anti-perspirant instead of just a deodorant. I use Mitchum unscented which is really good, it doesn't smell of anything it just stops you sweating. If you want to smell of something you can wear a separate body spray.

Long story short... I'm sure you smell lovely ;)

edit: One last tip, smell your shoes! When I was about 14 my manky old converse started to smell and I didn't notice for about 2 weeks, so embarrassing! If your shoes smell bad it's normally time to chuck them, because there's only so much fabreeze can do for you.

You want to check your UK vaccinations are up to date first of all (including tetanus), and then hepatitis A vaccination and rabies are the ones generally recommended. Depending on where you're going, you might want to get a yellow fever vaccination (see the NHS fit for travel website, there's a map of yellow fever areas).

Your UK ones will be free and Hep A should be, but you might have to pay for rabies. Yellow fever, if you think you need it, can only be given at certain places (there's a link to yellow fever vaccination centers on the nhs travel immunisation page).

If it's just one area of food, then don't worry...

If it's just one area of food, then don't worry too much about it. If it happens too often in your opinion, then you might have an eating disorder which needs seeing to by your doctor.

I have a similar problem with anything nutty. The smell of toasted almonds makes me gag. However, I used to have a nut allergy, and when I was first diagnosed they told me that the fact I didn't ever like nuts could have been an indication because some people have a sixth sense. So you may actually be allergic to perhaps the high amount of citric acid in citrus fruits or something. You could also have a sensitive stomach to the acidity and so you have learnt that your stomach doesn't like this, which would cause a gag reflex. However the fact that I 'grew out of' my allergy just shows that your tastes and your body can change and adapt to things.

If it's not an allergic reaction and is simply a dislike for the food, it might be an idea to try and get used to the smell, at least, by exposing yourself to it intentionally and trying to reverse the reflex you have developed. It will be impossible to try and avoid the smell forever!

she went to her chiropodist for a manky toe and got chatting away about her shoulder and for some unknown reason the chriopodist decided to tell her that she had swollen glands once and it turned out to be cancer. This got her all worked up and panicy. Then when i took her to the hospital appointment the doctor said that it was probably a torn muscle but couldn't reassure her cos she doesn't know for sure what it is (in a typical covering their own back fashion) and recommended she have an MRI scan in 8 weeks times (urgent cases tend to be within 2 if i'm not mistaken).

She went back to her GP for some because she didn't find the hospital doctor comforting who took more blood. Since then she has found another lump except on her collarbone which is hard and immoveable and she won't stop worrying about it.

I know all lumps should be checked out by a doctor but statistically it's unlikely to be a cancer at her age (which i have told her). Does any one have any suggestions as to what this could be? and also how do i get her to stop worrying/shut the **** up? no logic is gettign through to her and quite frankly it's starting to piss me off cos it's almost as if she's determined to have cancer.

Had enough of insect bites and strange bumps on fingers- Help needed!

Hi thanks for your replies so far
I'm pretty...

Hi thanks for your replies so far
I'm pretty convinced they are insect bites, i do have two dogs at home (that i visit at weekends) but i am sure that they do not have fleas/mites as have been checked over by vets recently and arent scratching. Plus I continue to get bites even when not at home with the dogs. I thought they were just mossie bites at first but could it be something biting me whilst i sleep such as bedbugs? It would explain the bites on the torso.

With the hands I am only assuming allergy as it just seems to be a strange thing to suddenly develop and seeing as it always flares up during a shift it made sense to blame it on that. The ingredients are constantly improving and changing, so if there was a change it may have involved new ingredients causing this irritation. I'm quite certain it isn't acne, i have never really suffered with it even as a teenager, and the skin all around the tip of those two middle fingers goes red near the bumps but definitely not the appearance of a spot, more like inflammation or irritation of the whole area. Nothing really has changed in the time when this started happening like washing powder or anything.

I know I should get it checked out but it's difficult when you are working at the weekend away from your gps when it flares up and it's practically gone when you come back to your gp during the week. nothing to show to get solved. I havent tried the creams yet just as it always happens at work and would just come off in the next pint i poured or wet glasses i had to put away. And everytime i fill out an NHS online thing it tells you its meningitis or something else life threatening and they are going to call you an ambulance if you don't get to A&E immediately (well from my experiences anyway (my friend pulled a shoulder muscle and they thought it was a heart attack)).

I have the weekend off work to get on with my revision and exams this week so will be keen to see if it flares up at the weekends again. I may try latex gloves at work (Though i may look silly) just to see if i get the same reaction.

Thanks for all your help so far. Hopefully i can find out what this is and they will eventually work on the new insect repellent that will use hormonal mixes to tell them you aren't a tasty treat! :P

Try and eat foods that are different in colour....

Try and eat foods that are different in colour. Obviously this mainly applies to fruit and vegetables. If you are not keen on veg but you like pasta, try chopping vegetables very finely and stir frying. Add a tin of chopped tomatoes and any herbs/seasoning you like. This will feed at least 2 people, if not more.
Your doctor could advise you by a simple blood test if you have an iron deficiency. This is very common in teenagers in particular and you do say your face is pale.
Try and make sure your cereals are wholegrain, (Weetabix, bran flakes, Shredded Wheat) or porridge which gives slow release energy rather than something sweet and sugary.
Wholemeal bread is also a good idea if you like it. This will make sure you have sufficient fibre.
There are plenty of healthy eating websites you can try for recipe ideas and meal planners. Just take it one or two small changes at a time and build it up until you are eating a good balanced diet. Hope this helps.

Why am I getting so many bad colds?

There are a lot of misconceptions floating around...

There are a lot of misconceptions floating around about the common cold and so called 'preventative medications' such as vitamins that can reduce your chance of catching colds.

What I'll say is that is currently unfounded given the data we've seen in current research. There is some evidence to suggest Echinacea can hep reduce the severity and occurrence of colds by around 25%, but there was also a lot of scepticism regarding the data and what the authors of the study chose to disclose and what they didn't. Current consensus is that it isn't proven, but it can't hurt. (http://www.nhs.uk/news/2012/10Octobe...nst-colds.aspx)

There's good evidence surrounding Zinc and it's reduction of cold symptoms if taken within a day of onset of first minor symptoms. It doesn't prevent colds, and may or may not shorten the duration, but you could feel better during the cold than you would have done otherwise. (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/1...01364.pub3/pdf)

There is literally minuscule evidence that Vitamin C benefits cold-suffers; it certainly does not prevent colds occurring.

The best thing you can do is regularly wash your hands (I'm not saying you don't!), eat healthily and exercise regularly. People will always catch colds, there is no magic cure, but by keeping yourself fit you're keeping your immune system in the best possible shape to recover as fast as it can when you do catch colds.

As for why you think you may be catching more, it could be down the above dietary and exercise factors, or it could be that you (likely subconsciously) touch your nose or mouth more than you think and hence increase the chance of viruses attaching to your mucosa and initiating infections.

Other than that, it could simply be bad luck! Last year I caught around 4/5 colds, this year I've had none so far. Such is life I'm afraid!

If she still puts it off and you're still really concerned, I'd speak to the teacher but only after you've told your friend that's what you're going to do. I reckon she'll probably come along if she knows you're going to anyway.
Is she receiving support from her GP for her depression? It might be worth suggesting an appointment for your friends' family to see a GP together to discuss how best to support her? I think with her exams coming up soon, she really needs to be able to focus at home and having an non-supportive family can be incredibly hindering.
But honestly, the most important thing you need to do is make sure she knows you're always there for her nomatterwhat. Let her know you're worried and just want to help.

There's a diet called juice plus and I've got a few people on fb that swear by it (but they are also sale representatives for it too).

It's about 105 a month and its just fruit and veg blended into a drink that tastes of chocolate by putting in flavourings. However, when I google it for reviews there is not much on it other than juice plus itself and a few YouTube videos about it being a scam.

I just wondered if anybody had tried this or has seen any reviews? Thankyou :)

Hi,
Its not a scam, and people who assume its just "juice" because its called "juice plus" and assume its a scam are a bit lame...

You get 4 months worth of "juice-plus" for your £105 which can even be paid in 4 monthly payments which works out at £6 a week for a meal replacement - can you buy that much veg or fruit to last a week to live off? doubt it. - Its a high fibre meal replacement for weight control and also nutritional supplement for working out.

It has dried fruits and vegetables in it (like over 20 veg's and fruits) - you mix it with water or milk

It makes you feel good, gets all the vitamins and minerals and goodness that your body needs; and to top it off, you dont need to exercise to loose weight; but of course it helps.

It is very sad, people are asking us as we sat near herand sometimes things are very dodgy. The person really isn't nice as she sacked someone with no notice and reason, so her subordinates were glad she isn't in until the notice came out that she's not returning soon... Which is also not nice, no matter what to think that but now everyone's concerned. We were thinking it may be high blood pressure to excuse the general behaviour of yelling and swearing every 20mins and stamping feet. Also her husband is 15yrs older director which we all feel sorry for and I have a feeling he has no idea what his wife is like, she seems to have serious issues and brings them up at work a lot, swears and is stressed about her in-laws so the director's parents which she talks about. I feel very sorry if there's some sort of an explanation for the behaviour, even since new I'd just felt that noone at work likes her as very unprofessional for a manager and immature but this must be even harder for the family to go through. It may be family issues, she thinks her husband's side of the family is racist as they're different races but we don't think it is race, it is because of her childish attitude. We don't know if he knows or has heard any of what she says at work about his family but it makes us wonder, at such an early stage of marriage erm she seems unhappy and stressed and now the baby... First thing when realising the pregnancy, was that maternity leave isn't long enough so was looking forward to that. Is odd, we have to pick up the pieces of work but remember what she says or does and try think what's wrong. Some people even said that it is karma, I was shocked and said wow that's not nice think to say as it is the father's baby too and noone deserves that

Unfortunately this is one area of guidance that must be carefully considered, designed and monitored to suit the needs of the individual so it's difficult to be too specific/prescriptive (other than to tell people what they should definitely avoid!)

Not rock solid no. Post Exertional Malaise (PEM) is something of a hallmark of ME/CFS however ~ exercise only usually has the potential to make those who do not have ME/CFS feel better psychologically, and to tire them out a little but nothing too out of the ordinary. In ME/CFS it may improve how we feel for a short time (associated serotonin release and the temporary alleviation of issues associated with blood flow/volume abnormalities e.g. cerebral hypovolemia/vasoconstriction/hypoxia) but we then get something called 'payback'
I wouldn't worry too much about going over unless you're going hundreds over.
:)
Today I had Heinz 'farmers market' soup, 2 slices of bread and a banana and I'm 4g away from going over my goal.

Take whatever MFPal says with a pinch of salt, metaphorically speaking.

I had a crown put on two of my teeth after root canal treatment. The irritation from anesthetic injections is more of a scratch than an ache.

The one on back of my teeth irritates now and then when eating but you get used to it. Give it a 2-3 weeks to see if the pain dies down and you adapt to your crown. Try not to fiddle with it too much (I.e. touching it with your tongue to see how much it hurts). If the pain gets worse then go back to the dentist.

I can't quite believe my luck but I haven't started with symptoms yet this year, but that stuff works ok for me, especially the eye drops, because my eyes get really bad. For a few years I was only on antihistamines and every year my medication got switched to a different tablet because I became resistant to them I think.
I don't know what your worst symptoms are/how long youve been taking them but maybe it's a possibility that you've become resistant?
I'd say go see your GP and see if they can do something. Best of luck in everything, I know how much it drags you down :3

Also look into getting some CBT/other therapy about your phobia. Chances are you're going to need other medical treatment at some point in your life and if you can address these issues now it will make things much easier for you in the future.

It is hard to explain really as I have a wide range of symptoms.

A brief list:
Headaches
Floaters in vision or momentarily blurred vision( in one eye) like you would get with something in your eye.
Nausea/feeling car sick, this can be random or after eating
Vertigo
Tinnitus
Pain in knees and knuckles
Difficulty walking (feels like I carry a very heavy backpack)
Difficulty remembering things or will slur or use the wrong word or pronounce it wrong
Palpitations
Tender skin or sore spots (feels like bruises all over my legs and back but skin is clear)

MS is diagnosed by two episodes of focal neurological dysfunction separated in time and space. I.e. you have to have two separate incidences of losing your vision, or losing the use of a limb. (although it can be a progressive deteriorating condition, making it harder to diagnose)

Nothing that you describe fits into any of the classic criteria for MS though - none of the things you describe are focal neurological signs. For this reason I would suggest it is not MS.

You have to understand that symptoms in MS appear suddenly, then gradually improve over days to weeks.

The large array of symptoms affecting several systems would be much better explained by something hormonal (although I personally cannot think what), or by anxiety as you say, or perhaps as side-effects of anti-depressants combined with any o the above.

Ask your doctor why they won't refer you.

It really depends on how much sleep you need. I suggest you wake up 15 minutes earlier each day to change you sleeping pattern gradually. This way, you won't feel too tired. I find that using a lamp and timer to wake up helps a lot.

They'd do it all as part of the same operation - the "telescope" is the camera they use for the keyhole operation anyway. If you do have gallstones and you get referred to see a surgeon at the hospital, they'll be able to explain the options in more detail, and have a look at your existing scar(s) to see if they would be likely to cause a problem.

All colds are caused by a virus. It is just more common in winter because people are more often indoors and therefore in closer contact with each other and also because people tend to be less active which weakens your immune system.
It is perfectly normal to have a cold at this time of year, only if it persists for a few weeks should you be worried enough to see your doctor :)

I used to wear contacts and glasses when I was...

I used to wear contacts and glasses when I was younger, at 18 I had laser eye surgery and now my eyes have deteriorated. I now have a mild prescription and I am interested in contact lenses.

I have dailies at the moment which I am getting on fine with. I noticed there are monthly continuous wear lenses and I know you can get monthly ones that you take out at night. I have slightly dry eyes - side effect from the laser treatment.

Has anyone ever used the continuous wear ones? Any feedback? Thanks.
