So that time of year again when I want to...

Hi,

So that time of year again when I want to block distracting sites due to exams. I used Cold Turkey on my old laptop and loved it... However, I've installed it on my new one and it isn't working. It says that it has blocked the sites, however, all of them are still accessible. I'm on Windows8. Has anyone had a similar experience or know how to amend this?

Alternatively could anyone suggest a similar productivity application which is good?

Yeah, three actually said to us that using a phone contract and tethering was going to be a better option than using their mobile broadband MyFi things!!

I've used their PAYG+12 option for a few years but I've only needed it for occasional access when away from home. For Data contracts about the best you can get is 15GB/Month. With a 3G dongle/Mifi you might get slightly better rates and ping times than tethering via a phone but with a phone you may be able to get more data. One problem I did find tethering to my phone was that it uses a lot of battery.

Hey, I still have the stock cooler installed for my Radeon HD 6970 card and recently the noise has really been bugging me. Also for the amount of noise the cooler is really not very effective at all and my graphics card regularly reaches some very high temperatures while playing games that are not so demanding such as League of Legends and CSS. I was wondering if anyone could recommend me any custom air coolers for the 6970 that are fairly easy to install as I don't have any experience in installing custom heatsinks onto graphics cards. Been thinking about this cooler: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Arctic-Cooling-A...B0052TIRQI but the majority of the reviews state that it's very tricky to install so I'm unsure about purchasing it.

I think the heat issue might also be caused because the lack of good airflow in my case. I have a Cooler Master HAF 912 mid case but I'm not utilising the area on the side of the case for a fan. What I wanted to ask about this is if I were to install a fan on to the side would I have it extracting air or blowing air in? And would it be a cost effective way of further cooling my overall temperatures?

Thanks guys.

There are some issues with installing a aftermarket cooler on a gpu................one major issue is that it will void your warranty on the gpu.

And I do agree, its a matter of airflow on your case............usually side fan is an intake, I also hope the front is intake.
And you have 2 more fans, one at the top and back which are exhausts.

Also check the catalyst control system in the performance, graphics overdrive bit.........if the fan hasn't been set to a certain speed, etc

It's the third suggestion. Yeah, possibly hard drive failure. It was making a mild whirring noise in the weeks before this happened. I'll try the F1 F2 thing on start up later and see how it goes. It's OS is windows XP. Not sure of the model, but it's Packard Bell and I've had it since 06.

I'm definitely sure it's a hard drive failure... 7 years is a long time for one to work consistently, and usually when there starts to be too many bad sectors, it starts creating odd noises just before it fails. There's no other good reason for it to not show up anything at all and make loud noises in the process. I would download a recovery tool onto a usb / cd, like testdisk http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk, and boot off from there which could try to recover files - but you'll need definitely need to get a new hard drive soon (or probably better to just use this as an excuse to buy a new pc), even if you do manage to recover your files and boot back into windows

In your scenario we know that its a rogue software/driver that has no effect outside of normal run. I would assume that its something a lot less suspicious than a virus but still could be a fundamental startup fault.
I would reccomend uninstalling all your unnecessary programs and drivers (might need some research for this) and seeing the effect that has.

Hm, I have never replaced RAM slots on a laptop I have to admit. Replacing the heat sink though, ****ing hassle. I had to remove the keyboard first!!!! And before that the thing that holds the keyboard on and that was so stuck.

As toosh said, RAM is intentionally easy to replace in virtually every non-ultrabook laptop. Unlike other laptop components you'll find RAM is very rarely proprietary or soldered/boxed in, some laptops even have hatches in the base allowing access to the DIMMs without even needing a screwdriver :yep:

In terms of price, in my experience a 2 x 4GB kit typically costs less than manufacturers charge to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB.

That's a different issue than your original post. A drop out at 10:10 every night like that would not be due to VM's traffic management which wouldn't be noticeable with normal web surfing... You would still be able to "load" a normal webpage even if you'd had your speed reduced. My advice would be to contact VM in the first instance if you're not familiar with trouble-shooting connectivity issues.
This sort of problem could have numerous things causing it and to try and give good advice without being in a position to see what your equipment might or might not be doing is nigh on impossible and that's even before pinpointing what may be causing your dropouts. If you ring up VM and choose the option for service faults, they should get someone to carry out basic checks with you over the phone to rule out certain aspects of their network or supplied equipment (such as the modem) causing the problem. If necessary after this, they may book an engineer visit. Be aware that going beyond this with them - such as tech support - can have high call charges so don't get stung and end up calling or getting put through to some premium rate tech support line... The fact that you can presumably use it at other times of the day and you have noticed a specific time when you're losing connection or unable to load any websites may indicate a setting somewhere that may be causing this but, like I suggested, it's all guesswork so ring your ISP first to at least rule out a fault with your service.

Ok thanks. I do still have the problem in the OP, but I thought i'd bring that issue up too.

Thanks for your help :)

If you have the name of the virus, google it and someone else has found a way to get rid of it. Follow their instructions. If it is posted on a technology forum or blog, you can pretty much trust it. In the course of your googling you will find some standard protection programs such as the free version of AVG and Malwarebytes, and these are worth having as well, even after your virus has gone. If you can't find a solution by googling the name, google the outputs and symptoms of the virus, since virus names can sometimes be a bit dodgy for identification anyway.

Hey Guys;

Well, I am looking for the cheapest region free blu ray player I can find because a lot of the stuff I like to watch from Funimation (yes, mainly to watch my anime on) is from Funimation which is almost entirely region A.

I could get it from Madman in Australia as it is Region B, however, the blu rays cost AT LEAST twice as much not including delivery...

Can anyone suggest me one, I have been looking at one but it is nearly £600 (but is so awesome!) which isn't that good for a student going to uni in September/October time...

Would anyone recommend a good video editing software? I'd like one that is similar to iMovie (actually, I just kinda want iMovie but I'm not allowed a Mac). Is there a software out there that it really similar for Windows?

I have Windows Live Movie Maker but it's much more limited as it doesn't have very many options in terms of titles, transitions, etc and also doesn't have as much functionality like cloning and green screen effect (I don't really need green screen effect though)

I also have Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 which I use but it's a little too complicated for my liking. I am learning how to use it but I would prefer a more simpler software with presets but it still not too limited (things like placing a picture over a video track, cloning, creative titles, etc).

I'm also not willing to pay.....I'm broke :/ Lol.

I know that's pretty specific but does anyone have any recommendations? Or if you just use a software that you like even if it doesn't meet what I've said above. I would be REALLY grateful for any replies. Thanks in advance! :)

How far are you looking to go with editing? If you have CS5, that is what you should be using (or FCP X) to get into editing and having a decent quality of video. It's honestly not as daunting as it looks. All you need to learn is what an insert and overwrite edit is and you're already halfway there. If you want to try CS2 (I'm not sure how much easier it is compared to CS5), click here.

Alternatively, you can use Corel VideoStudio Pro (although I've only used a very old version; no idea what it's like now).

Hope that helps.

We would have to forget bout an i5 unless you try on eBay.
So

This is a little over budget but the CPU has integrated graphics so should be able to handle most games. I've never used AMD so couldn't advise further on that.

I would then save for a GPU. Not entirely sure if that cooler will fit the FM2.

EDIT: Word isn't SAVING my work.

In a crisis and TSR is the best place to come..

So I've just put my entire dissertation into a single word document. When I try to save it it doesn't save. It will save the title of the document but it says 0KB and when i open it up there's a blank page. I still have my dissertation open but it's still called "Document1" and I can't save it!! Any help would be appreciated it's in for tomorrow!

I thought it might be because the file is too big. But I have my friends dissertation all on one document and it's a lot bigger than mine

Thank you!

1) C+P the text into a notepad file and save that just to get a copy sol you don't lose the data.

2) Try save-as, and don't us Doc1 as the filename, us something different.

3) Try saving as a different file type, 9Ie. doc 2003 not 2010 or 2013)

4) Try saving in a different place, like on the desktop

5) C+P the text from the notepad file into a new document and try saving that.

6) If all that fails, right-click on the 0kb document and goto properties, and post screenshots on here to see if we can help you further,

Just thought I'd stick a solution on here, in the unlikely scenario that someone in the future has a similar problem.

I've now bought this successfully, just by typing in the name of my college, and getting a verification email sent to my .ac.uk address. It does say when you buy it that the offer is not open to secondary education students, and only to higher education, so it may only work if your school/college offers higher education courses.

In any case, the easiest way to find out is to press 'buy' (or 'add to basket', whichever is there), and you have to go through the verification process before you commit to paying, so if it doesn't work, you won't lose out. It would be helpful if they told you this on the page, because I could have solved this problem almost immediately if they had! Anyway, there it is.

You get the full program. Well, you get two licenses of it - So you can use it on two computers (Mac or Windows or one of either) but may only load the software up at any one time on either. You only have to connect to the web once a month just to validate the copy, then you can stay offline or take your computer somewhere else and use it.

You get to keep the files, they're yours. You can still edit them and use them, just not in the copy of CS6 you have (because the licence will have expired), but you could still use them in GIMP or on another computer somewhere.

You will have the option to carry on the plan, just work out which is cheapest for you.

I wouldn't buy it right away though - Adobe are announcing changes to the system and they seem to be getting rid of the physical copies of all the discs they sell and requiring people to use Creative Cloud instead. It seems they're offering plans for single-software editions (so just Photoshop without buying it in a package with other programs) for ~$10/month... Although that might just be for existing customers. If not, $20. Have a read up on it.

Could anybody offer any explanations as to why a wifi network - in it's entirety - would collapse when you try to connect to it with a device?

My phone (HTC One X, all up to date), my iPod (Touch, up to date software) and iPad (again, up to date) all cause the home wifi network to go offline and require a reset at the router before it will function.
Other devices (kindles, laptops) work fine 100% of the time, but they're downstairs within line of sight. My devices are upstairs (one storey, conventional house, no unusual stonework) and all cause the network to fail.

I'm not sure that USB3 will make much difference for a single mechanical disk (same would be true for SATA3). The throughput rates from the platters hasn't changed much as is usually the limiting factor. USB3/SATA3 will make a difference if you have multiple drives on a single channel (e.g. a raid array). (I've not really looked at the other changes in USB3/SATA3 which might help but throughput alone may not be that big a factor).

Thanks but I have already purchased most of the items named. I just have the motherboard to buy and thats it..... So the motherboard doesnt really play a big difference its just the amount of ports it has ? And rather than going with the sabertooth z77 I should go with something with less ports and cheaper?

Ports, features, etc some can technically have better overclocking ability.
Though I would check individual reviews on how things went.

Sabertooth, is basically a niche range, loads of pcie, etc slots.....numerous usb's, usb 3.0 which is nice, sata ports, etc and a large thermal armour which is used to reduce heat when your overclocking. But some people have had trouble with the thermal armour such as temps or the armour getting in the way.

I would just reinstall the system. Malware can be...

I would just reinstall the system. Malware can be really nasty, and some parts might still be left behind somewhere inside the system components or applications they managed to infect.

Some recommendations:

After reinstalling, do not connect the machine to the Internet until you install the antivirus software. If you don't know what to choose, here are some names you can try out: AVG, Avast, Avira (in no particular order). Go for the free versions - they detect viruses just as good as paid versions, and the paid versions usually do not offer a lot of useful additional features. The only downside is an occasional advert, but I personally don't mind.

If you are reinstalling Windows, go for Windows 7 or 8 (whichever you want). Vista is too slow from my experience. XP and older is either not supported any more or the support will soon stop (for XP it's 2014). This means your computer might just become defenceless against a lot of security problems (even despite having antivirus software)

Windows 7 install disks can be downloaded from the Microsoft website for free. You get up to 30 days free without activation. PM me if you want more information on this.

Looks nice. I think it'd look good with a coloured background though. Something like the twitter blue.

Also rather than having boxes why not have two main pages that you scroll between. One with say top updates which you can scroll up and down. Then a second screen which you scroll left/right to with the box idea. That way it's the best of both worlds and it gives the user to see one big mess of top tweets, or see their own friends pages individually.

Cartridges in some cheaper printers which are sold sometimes cost more then the printer itself without the cartridges.
That is normal. Windows copies a piece at a time, so it has to contact the original source server for subsequent pieces. Ie, it will do the text first then pictures, but to do the pictures it has to contact the server. And if it is copying advertising, then that may well be on a different server altogether that has to be contacted.

Hey there!

Your specs seem to have been cleaned up by the two lovely people before myself!

Just as a reminder, here are three mistakes I made (They're stupid but kind of easy to forget):
1. Make sure you have an operating system. (Windows 8, 7, MAC OSX etc.)
2. If you're not next to your router or don't want to plug your PC in via ethernet cables, Please for the love of god get an internet card or make sure your motherboard has one.
3. Speakers, unless you're an avid headphone user make sure you have some speakers. You can pick them up for less than 10 smackers!

Hope I helped! :/

Enjoy building!

There are several ways your housemate would be able to access your emails, but he would need access to your machine or have you unwittingly download malicious software that he can use to snoop on your machine (such as a keylogger)

The first thing I would do is check to make sure you have home sharing turned off, that way if your housemate wants to try and access your machine when it's connected to the network they would need to your login credentials.

Then do a virus/malicious software scan to make sure your machine isn't infected, I'd recommend doing it in safe mode too as it won't allow any malicious software to activate itself due to the OS only running services it needs to operate. Also, when booting into safe mode don't choose the 'with networking' option

I would never buy any mac, but this is patently false. Since you said 'Apple computers' let's think about the macbook - it has an excellent battery, a glass screen and a metal body. The build quality is high.

The vast vast majority of non-apple laptops are not made from 'the exact same parts' as this. Say what you like, Apple do seem to consistently use high quality parts.

At least try to have a balanced opinion. If people want to pay a 200% premium for said stability, fine. That's their call.

.

You're kidding right? Apart from the external casing which is a premium case and designed by apple (but manufactured by foxconn). All the internals are sourced from the major manufacturers who also supply other companies with the exact same parts. The processor hard drive, motherboard etc... are all the same and all come from the same manufacturers. One easy example i can give is that apple use Sandisk/Samsung/Toshiba SSD's in their laptop range. Other Laptop manufacturers use the exact same models.

Another example can be seen in the iPhone 5 which uses a camera module from sony and omnivision. The exact same module is used in sony phones as well.

Apple brand their screen as "Retina", It's an IPS LCD Display manufactured by LG, Sharp and Japan display. It;s actually worse than many of the OLED displays used in other smartphones today. Apple brand their glass as aluminosilicate glass, It's actually made by corning who provide the exact same glass to Samsung, HTC, sony etc... Apple don't even make the processors inside their phones. Their A4/5 chips were made by samsung...

Apple make nothing. Nothing at all, they all buy their components from the same suppliers as everyone else. They use the exact same components as everyone else. There is nothing "premium" about them at all.

Before you try and sync it and all that press the 'alt' key on your keyboard and in the menu that appears at the top click on "Store" then click "authorise this computer". Use the Apple ID that you use for your iPod and it should work fine. Next, click on the image of the iPod on the top right to go to the iPod summary page. Once there look for the options for the iPod (they're near the bottom of the screen) when you have found them, check the "Manually manage music and videos" and click apply, if it brings up a message telling you that it'll wipe your iPod click the cancel button, if it doesn't you'll now be able to go back to the music library and manually drag and drop music files to the iPod

There is a difference between just turning the computer off with the power switch on the front and disconnecting the power (pulling the plug, turning off the switch on the wall). When the mains power is still on but the computer is off with the power switch on the front it's still drawing a small amount of power. However in that case I think the risk of fire is higher than the risk of costing any real money (and the risk of fire is pretty low).
(I think that's what you were implying but it may not have been that clear)

Personally I don't consider the power usage that much (unless it's going to be stupidly high). For a system with a higher power usage (and I've used workstations that need the higher power version of the standard IEC lead) the bigger concern is generally the noise of the fans. With a 450W supply at normal usage it's probably pulling around 150W and I'd hope it's peaking at around 350/400W if you're hammering the system. A new LED monitor is probably <50W (Looking up my iiyama screen it's rated at 24W and I think that's a CCFL screen rather than LED).

No - I was talking about the switch on the wall (plug plugged into an off switch). In that case, or the other case I pointed out (socket with nothing plugged in) no electricity is used, unless the plug socket is faulty and short-circuiting. In the case that a plug is plugged in a switch which is on, but the appliance is off, then yes, a small amount of current is drawn (for the 3.3V sense rail in a computer), however I imagine the amount is negligible - but the risk of fire is the bigger risk/cost, yes.

I recently got a new laptop and needed to install office on it obviously so I could work on assignments. I couldn't afford buying a disc and my sister (who I don't live with) said I could use hers. It's worked and it's installed but will this pose problems with her version of office?
The disc does say not to lend to anyone and I've heard that you can only install office a certain number of times and only on your own computers in your own household. How would microsoft even know if the computers weren't owned by the same person?
I'm running win8 but the office version is 2010 home&student - I think my sister installed it on her desktop and laptop - I'm hoping that me installing it on my computer won't affect her version! Can anyone shed any light on this?

When you install the software you generally have to put in an activation code and as part of that it's likely that the installer will contact MS with a signature for your copy of windows and the key that was used. Chances are it will do the same from time to time when you're using the software.

As long as you've not gone over the number of allowed computers there's unlikely to be an issue (I think at least one option for Home and Student allows you to install on 3 Computers).

Best thing is to look on amazon and see if they have what you are selling - so for example I sell a lot of books on there and electronic stuff such as hard drives etc. You can list your price and make it competitive. If it doesn't sell you lose nothing and it can be on for a long time. You tend to have fixed post and it is easy to get payment.

If it is weird stuff like clothes, shoes or general things like secondhand furniture then ebay is better - or GUMTREE

Never happening.
I.e- they may abandon Intel for AMD, but they won't abandon x86 platform. So far- there is no faster processors than x86 (even ARM's processors are loosing against low-power Atoms). AMD's APUs are promising (especially the upcoming 3rd generation bulldozer), but in terms of real CPU-horsepower they are still behind Intel (although, APUs are more than just CPUs)
Anyway- Apple has got plenty of experience with changing platforms (M68k --> PowerPC --> PC) :)

Best place to check would be on your electric bill, this will tell you what you're paying per unit (it can vary depending on tariff (service charges might be part of the per unit or seperate)

The limit that I came across is for a specific component inside this psu (for people who know electronics it was one of the output capacitors in a 20A SMPS). In this case looking at the data sheets for that specific component it says it's rated for 1000 hours of use. I've only found that because I'm looking to repair it (A replacement would cost >£100, the parts to fix it are <£1).
