I'm going to have the same issue.

I think I will most likely fly up with one of my parents, which will allow me to carry at least 2 suitcases (or pay around £35 for an extra suitcase) and one on-board bag , and get the rest up through a courier service or something.

Flying up seems to be not too more expensive than getting a train, and so much quicker :)

That money you pay to book on an extra suitcase does not necessarily cover the extra weight, so you may end up paying for every extra kilogram on top of the permitted e.g 20kg with easyjet. Just check this with the airline first.

Edinburgh don't go into Extra or Clearing - and even if they did, it wouldn't be with courses like Psychology that fill up without difficulty.
You don't say anywhere what your grades in Portugal are - but you'll need a significantly higher level of attainment to get admitted to Edinburgh than you will for Portsmouth/Lincoln/Plymouth.

ah so you don't know what subjects you can take until you get to edinburgh uni itself? Do you know what any of these over subscribed courses are? It seems silly that they go on about how flexible the program is yet once you're there you are stuck doing two other subjects you had not thought about before....

Do you know how possible it is to change degree program entirely? Thanks

Well no, it's not confirmed until you're enrolled on the courses in question. Oversubscribed courses include English Literature and Politics, but it obviously varies from year to year. It's not that silly - it's far more flexible than the multitude of universities in England where outside courses don't exist - it's hardly unreasonable to include some limitations...

In terms of a change in degree it's something you can raise with your personal tutor when you arrive. However, it may be the prerequisites for what you want to take are different, etc.

Hi - I was in Darroch in first year and don't worry about parking to move stuff in, you will have enough time to park your car and move stuff into your flat by doing a couple of journeys from your car to the flat. However, you will not be able to park all day, but to move stuff in it shouldn't be a concern :)

If London really does matter then Manchester or Edinburgh are surely both as bad as each other. However, I would note that if you're online, you don't *need* to be anywhere, except somewhere with internet access. Likewise, Edinburgh is home to companies like Skyscanner, Wolfson, etc. Hardly barren in terms of start ups and tech companies.

Access Bursary... Reference help? :|

Right, so I'm applying for the access bursary,...

Right, so I'm applying for the access bursary, and emailed my counsellor from my previous uni (which I dropped out from after first semester) asking if she could give me a reference for the bursary, basically confirming what I said in my statement was true and to provide details on my background and financial situation.

She replied saying she'd be happy to give me a "migating circumstances" letter, but that it wouldn't be a detailed letter, etc. I replied back to her saying I'd appreciate it but the bursary page on the website does ask referees to give as much detail as possible about the applicant's background and such.

However, she's since sent my a letter which states the dates I had counselling appointments with her and saying that we discussed difficulties I had with anxiety and living in my flat and my decision to leave university and the financial implication, etc.

Now, I was assuming that they were asking for quite a lengthy in depth reference, but I am prone to writing 100 words when 20 will do, so perhaps I'm biased. Do you think that a reference of no more than a paragraph simply outlining the very basics would be enough?

Also do they send the reference themselves, or do they give it to the applicant (which in this case is me) for them to send on their behalf?

Hi!
I'm doing study abroad this year in America, and I'm in the History, Classics & Archaeology school. In that department a B is 60+. But, it's not reliant just on grades. You also write a personal statement type thing. I initially wasn't going to apply, because I didn't think I would get it, as I was scraping the B minimum requirement. But, I worked hard on my statement, and picked a university as my top choice which reserved one of the exchange places for someone doing my course.
So, I'd say go for it and apply even if you aren't necessarily sure you'll get it :)

It really depends on the person. It can vary from pyjama bottoms/joggies and a hoodie to girls turning up in skinny jeans and heels. I was at Edinburgh for 3 months last year but decided to defer and travel until this September and found myself in joggies/leggings and a hoodie most days as lecture theatres are usually freezing and you can sometimes have 3 or 4 lectures in a row so that's 4 hours of sitting - so you want to be comfy :)

In terms of reputation, Edinburgh is the best of the three. But perhaps a better reason to choose it is that the city is absolutely incredible - so much to see and do. It's very student-friendly and as far as cities go it's not very big at all - you can walk everywhere. There are some great university-owned facilities too such as the student union building called Teviot, which is the oldest purpose-built student union building in the world. I really could go on all day about how wonderful Edinburgh is but I guess you'll just have to come and see for yourself! Best of luck!

Do you know if they're marked in the same way as course work essays? Presumably it's harder to write an essay worth, say, 65 in the exam than it is in coursework. Do they take that into consideration?

Well the criteria for a 65 in an exam are different to those in a piece of coursework, so in theory it should be no easier or harder to receive a 65 in the examination.

Hi!
my only advice is coming from people who think Edinburgh is a beautiful city.

Lol! Afraid I won't be much help on that point as it's one of my main reasons for choosing Edinburgh :p I pretty much fell in love with the city the first time I visited, which was last September. I just got back from another trip there last month, and I love it even more.

It is a beautiful city, visually. It's very picturesque. Very cozy, you can easily walk the whole city in a few hours. I like that versus a metropolis like London - though I do love that city as well.

But more than that, I was taken by how historical Edinburgh is, and also how literary. It's the perfect city for writers I feel. You literally cannot walk a block without running into something historical, whether it's a building Robert Burns lived in, or Walter Scott's childhood home (which is on campus), or a graveyard JK Rowling roamed through looking for names for Harry Potter characters (Grey Friar's, also near campus.) I mean, the university newspaper was founded by Robert Louis Stevenson for goodness sake! The college where Arthur Conan Doyle was inspired to create Sherlock Holmes is in Old Town where the old university campus is. You can walk the streets where JM Barrie did as he thought up Peter Pan.

The whole city is steeped in literary history, and I just find it incredibly inspiring.

All this is besides the fact that the University of Edinburgh is a highly ranked uni, and the program looks very comprehensive and practical for writers (check out the Student Handbook from last year's program.)

I also applied to several different unis, including NYU, U of East Anglia, and Royal Holloway. But I'm very happy and excited to be spending next year in Edinburgh. I really think it'll be wonderful for my writing.

Good luck with whatever you decide! Let me know if you choose Edinburgh, it's always good to know someone going in! :D

All the best :)

But the main issue with going the Stanford route is that I have to reapply for medical school. I have to do another undergraduate degree before that. Another problem is the fact that places for international students in the US are really low (around 150 places in the entire country), and so entry is really competitive.

I think if you are an international student (non US citizen) this makes the decision depend very strongly on what you want to do as a career. If you are adamant on becoming a doctor, I would take Edinburgh. Edinburgh's "specialty" if you will, is medicine, just like Johns Hopkins or Penn. Its very well known for it.

The truth is, if you are an international student who wants medical school in the US it is quite difficult to get in as you said. I wouldn't put my bets on getting into a medical school even if you go to Stanford.

Stanford is a great place to start a career in nearly anything else though, so I would recommend Stanford over Edinburgh if you aren't committed to medicine.

Also you have to consider that if you go to Edinburgh, you are probably going to be a doctor in the UK, if you want to practice in the US, you will have to go through a whole set of licensing exams and a lengthy application process.

This question is really difficult to decide, and really relies on you thinking many many years ahead because your choice will truly affects you for the rest of your career.

Have you had a look at the past exam questions...

Have you had a look at the past exam questions from previous years? This will let you see the style of question for the course.

Looking at the course guide, are you aware of this:

In the exam, you may not repeat ‘material’ from your term essays; but what counts as ‘material’ requires definition. You may choose to discuss authors that you have already discussed in your term essays. You may also choose to address issues or ideas related to those explored in your term essays. But in the exam you should NOT address issues or ideas you have discussed in term essays by discussing the same authors that you used in the original essay. It is this, using the same author to make the same point, that counts as mere repetition of material from an essay and is disallowed.

Students should remember that, however similar the rubric, the questions asked in the exams will be substantially different from those set for the essays; and that exam answers will always be penalised for irrelevance to the question asked. In your revision for exams, you should therefore seek to consolidate your knowledge of the texts on the course and the critical and theoretical issues they raise. Merely reproducing material from your essay, composed in answer to a completely different question, will not earn goods marks in the exam.

Therefore, you need to ensure that you're not replicating things that you wrote about in your previous essays in the course and you need to combine your knowledge of the texts with the critical and theoretical issues that they raise, so therefore I'd expect that you need to be able to discuss this aspect of the texts too. I didn't take English literature at Edinburgh but I always found it useful to consider themes as the questions in the exam are normally related to a particular theme/issue and then you have to draw on your various readings of different texts to answer the question, rather than it asking you a particular question about a particular text.

However, I'd encourage you to look at past exam questions to see the style that they're written in as they tend to be similar each year. You can normally guess which question areas will come up on the basis of what hasn't been asked for a while.

You can choose an outside subject in first year if you want to. You have forty free credits, which is the equivalent of one year-long course or two semester-long courses.
If you're planning on going to the bar to become an advocate, it's strongly recommended that you fill the space with Civil Law. You need Civil Law and International Private Law courses to go to the bar. You can get these later on from the Faculty, but it's much simpler to take these courses in your first and second year respectively.

You'd need to speak to the university when you arrived but given an A at AS Maths is an entry requirement for the course at Edinburgh I can't see them being overly willing to let you take economics if you don't actually meet the entry requirements. However, they may well do (assuming there's space on the course) and let it be on your head if you struggle/fail with the maths element of the economics course. The only thing I can really suggest is for you to work on the AS Maths content in your spare time over the summer and then when you get to Edinburgh you can say that yes, you've not taken AS Maths but you've covered the necessary content as a hobby but again this just depends on how strict they're going to be with the requirements.

With economics, the maths requirements differ quite a lot between universities depending on what the course focuses on and whether the university offers catch up sessions in maths for people without A level maths. Some universities have a heavy statistical competent to the economics course which is why they require A level maths whereas others don't really focus on this aspect at all so you're likely to find that the course content and maths support at York/Sheffield is different to Edinburgh to compensate for the difference in entry requirements.

Hiya, I'm a dyslexic student at Edinburgh and it's amazing. So supportive! I have double loans on the shorter loans at the library (turned 3 hour book loans into 6 hours, and one week into 2 week etc...). I have a computer for exams, extra time and 30 minutes reading time at the start of an exam. I have permission to record lectures, I take notes on a computer (they offered to help me apply for funding for a special laptop for purpose, but I already had one). They've offered me software to help with notetaking. At the moment I have stickers on every essay informing the markers that I have learning difficulties, although they've emailed me to inform me that they're thinking of getting rid of these. They have told me that there's no way I will ever have more than one exam on the same day because of extra time etc, and promised to alter exam timetables if there are any clashes instead of making me take exams back to back. Frankly, they've been incredible.

That's unbelievable. At A level they don't give that much care and attention!

Hey! This is my first post so I hope this works...

But basically I'm in a dilemma surrounding which uni to go to, which I'm sure loads of you are as it creeps closer to the 8th May deadline.
I've applied for English Language and Linguistics and have managed to narrow it down to the University of Edinburgh and the University of York.

Edinburgh lowered my offer from AAA to ABB and York remains at AAB. It's not so much the grades that is the factor but I just do not know which to choose!? Edinburgh's open day put me off and the 4 year course = more debt doesn't sound too great. The uni themselves don't strike me as being super student friendly from the lack of communication I've received which is daunting but the city is beautiful. Although I find York's course to suit me more.

I have a feeling I could regret not taking up the offer at Edinburgh because although both are in the Russel Group, Edinburgh could open more doors? Or I could be totally wrong!! (This is all part of the problem, along with the fact I am very indecisive)

If anyone's in the same situation or could shed some light on my situation please feel free! Thanks in advance :)

Have you visited York?

Edinburgh and York are both very different university locations. I personally couldn't have hacked York and their open day put me off and made me realise how much I wanted to live properly in a city rather than a campus, whereas other people love the campus element of York and hate the fact that Edinburgh Uni doesn't have a campus as such. Different people want different things and neither is better.

With regards to money I wouldn't let the fact that Edinburgh is 4 years put you off as the uni has one of the most generous scholarship packages in the UK. In addition, it's more like a tax than anything where the amount you pay back relates to how much you earn so someone with a debt of £10,000 will pay off the same each month as someone who owes £100,000. Unless you earn an average of about £45,000 a year every year for the 30 years after graduation it's highly unlikely that you'll pay back the overall total of a 3 year degree course in England so going to Scotland and doing an extra year certainly won't impact on how much you end up paying back in the future. Yes, the cost of going to university has increased but salaries haven't risen by 3 times the amount so people will only ever pay back the same amount that they've always paid back. The repayment package is now more generous (9% on earnings over 21k rather than on earnings over 15k) so people who started uni in 2012 or later will be better off than people who started on the previous system as they will have an extra 6k a year of earnings that they aren't paying their student loan on. All the government has done is transfer the immediate cost of going to university to a subsequent government in 30 years time because it will just hit a point in the future where all of the money that the 2012 entry starters owe is defaulted back to being government cost because people won't have paid it all back.

That said, I'd encourage you to weigh up York and Edinburgh as you're doing - from what you've said it seems like you really like York. I can honestly say to your CV will be no different whether you have Edinburgh or York on it in the future as what will get you jobs will be what you have done as a student and the experiences that you've had - you'll get more out of university if you're really enjoying it. I absolutely loved my time at Edinburgh and got a lot out of it because I was enthusiastic about everything there.

I did linguistics at Edinburgh so if you've got any questions then drop me a PM :)
