If users want these perks, they would have to earn them through higher rep which comes from good posts. Therefore, the perks encourage good posts. At the moment, there is actualyl no incentive for users to post well and try to take advantage of the reputation system, this would be a step towards resolving this.

Thanks mods for deleting a thread people were using for practice. Of course a completely legal and allowed set of pre-release material deems students to be cheating, and for myself to earn a 5 point warning for uploading said pre-release material.

How has that helped if the mods can't even determine what's right or wrong?!

You're absolutely correct, it's not ok to call people names, just as it isn't ok to wish nasty things on them - there is an obvious set of people who find wishes of rape highly upsetting. Just as there is an obvious set of people who find wishes of going to hell highly upsetting. It's interesting to note that you easily tweak this sentence to apply to rape - "Hell in a religious persons mind is an awful place, and they are wishing that upon someone, whether they believe it or not is neither here nor there".

I just thought it was initially odd that you had one rule for one thing ('it's just trolling'), one for another. I do think we disagree on how to decide what the of some words is.

I support this idea. I think a general forum for post-uni life dilemmas or discussion is a really good idea. There are often times I have wanted to start a thread based around post-uni worries/troubles and all the forums have been too specific (focussing on careers or postgrad academia). I think a forum like this would be useful for those who are in their final year and about to graduate. I would welcome a forum like this.

I've been a subscriber for months now, and I've used a colour username for a long time. For some reason, I am unable to use a coloured username even though I know I am subscribed to TSR right now (I know I'm a sub because I can still see the people who rep/neg me).

It's been a month and I tried to use the coloured name for a while. I've tried it after retsrating my browser and even after restarting my computer in separate days and nothing works. The option to do it is there, and I can click it and then choose "save all changes", but nothing changes after I do that.

Any idea what's causing this?

Implementing facebook and twitter APIs isn't "basic initial coding". There is a lot more development work required for that. My suggestion for tracking the likes and button clicks will be less accurate but does not require as much coding.

That said, a full and proper implementation of these APIs can drastically improve many features on TSR. If the devs get the time to work on something like that.

There used to be a button in thread which would take you to the last unread post however.

Non-students could still read it, the problem is that much of the potential of the site is undermined because threads are dominated either by older people in work who aren't students or by (frankly) schoolchildren who can't really contribute on the same level. Maybe there should be two sites - it would be better to have a niche site for universities only. Maybe someone should start one!

Depends on how you use TSR - for instance I'm involved in the model house of commons, so the increased PM-box space is really useful. Some of the additional features like no ads and the increased avatar size are really rather nifty - but as I say, depends if you think you'd make use of the features included in a subscription to make it worth it.

The rep system clearly isn't there to flag things that are or might be considered offensive or rude. That's what the reporting system is for. The rep system is for opinions. Obviously it's misused, it always has been I think in the sense that people give neg rep if they really disagree with something and sometimes if someone see's a post has already been given a fair amount of neg rep then they neg it as well simply to add to it. That sort of thing is harder to change.
I think the point of rep is to neg someone if you disagree with them, that is the general premise of it I think. Some believe that you don't get to really high (or rather low) levels of neg rep unless you are troll like or just really nasty but I'm not entirely convinced by that. If there is someone who happens to have a pretty unique opinion on many things that no-one else on TSR agree's with then they are going to get a lot of neg rep.

If there was no neg rep or rather if the neg rep held no power then there would only be pos rep really. It would pretty much render the neg rep useless except perhaps for show.

The report button is there to direct the attention of the Mods towards the breaking of the rules and/or behaviour that is not good for the wellbeing of the board. It is not there for less serious reasons nor should it be made available for less reasons. The mods don't need to know every time someone disapproves of something I say. It's pointless and it's a waste of time and resources.
The reporting system certainly shouldn't be dumbed down because people don't like the rep system. I think the two are quite separate, perhaps very separate.
