Yeah I know what you mean, most of my mates assume that going university means you guaranteed success. I found that very naive. When age did you studied at uni, which uni was it and what did you studied?
Also how did it turned out and is this university experience that everyone talks about is overrated?

Started 2 and a half months after I turned 18, finished exams this time last year aged 21, went to UCL and did French and Spanish. Was great. By far my most productive formative years. Could have been even better if I had waited until I was about 20, to grow up a bit and then live the experience to the full. Didn't much like my department and the course could have been better, but got so so much out of the experience.

I tend to just think that what we get out is what we put in - so if we don't put the effort in, we won't get much out of the experience, and essentially it's a waste of money (and for some it's a much bigger waste of money than for others like me who only pay £3k a year). That's usually enough to motivate me :p that, and I love my course. I hated the system in school and college, I love it here at uni, which is why I'm doing a lot better at uni than I was at school :p

Hey. You are going to uni to study, get a degree...

Hey. You are going to uni to study, get a degree and establish a career. At least I am. I don't give a monkey about Freshers, social life or anything. I'm finishing my first year now and to tell you, I'm happy. Doing very well in my subject, got a placement in a research lab ( which is almost impossible after the first year) and I did make some friends at uni too. Despite the fact I lived at home, travelled, didn't go drinking and wasn't looking for friends. I know many of you will thumb me down, but this is just how I see it. I have a handful of friends and it is enough. Those people at uni who go around drinking with you are not friends, just mates to hang around with and I'm only interested in meaningful friendships. Having moved to the UK at the age of 15, I had to work really hard at school and college to establish where I am now. Success is my pure and only focus and if you think about it, you don't go to uni to have fun. If you want to have fun go to Ibiza or somewhere else. Uni is the most expensive purchase in my life so far and I'm 100% focused on study. Got 90%+ in my exams and determined to keep it that way. You will find friends eventually, even I did and I'm quite harsh as a person sometimes...but people seem to love me. Mystery why they do. Moral is...even a self centred and career orientated b*tch like myself found friends, you people put there with lovely personalities will most definitely find friends too.

Please let there be people like me who hate their degrees.

Holy ****, chemical engineering is a bottom tier subject. For getting jobs it's great (because it has numbers and chemical engineering sounds impressive) but the actual content is godawful.

You spend 90 % of your time calculating the diameters of pipes, and figuring out gas volumes and awful stuff like that.

Jesus christ, I am sitting here learning about pipes when people doing maths, chemistry or physics are literally learning about the fundamentals of the universe.

Actually, I did lots of set theory. I would rather calculate the diameter of a pipe. Possibly even more than one pipe.

Maths isn't all about the results that we let other people know about, anyway. Godel's incompleteness theorems are fascinating on a number of levels, but on the way to them you have to prove things like the statement "If all sets have a least upper bound then all sets have a greatest lower bound", for which the proofs are picky, boring, uninspiring and generally seem kind of pointless. You get interesting results by doing boring sh*t, just as I'm sure Chemical Engineering produces magnificent new creations whilst glossing over the precise diameters of the pipes used.

Psychology is good is you want to become a Therapist or Psychologist but I be blunt that you should make sure that you get experience in this field either through sandwich course where you do work placement for whole year or few internships. Health and Social care is also another option, this another role where you look after people. NHS do pay for some courses in these areas. Just stick to Psychology and another subject that might interest you and use your university career service as much as you can. There different areas in Psychology and your degree will let you choose which area to specialise through your modules. So find out which area you enjoy and specialise in it as much as you can. Its a broad subject.
Here are a few careers that you can get into

If you like working with kids, young people or vulnerable people than consider Social work or Youth/support worker?

If you like solving crime than Forensics Psyhcology is good option

If you like providing advice and solving people problem than Therapist is ideal role

Good luck

Sorry for not being able to give better advice.

Basically one of my modules this year depended on getting 2 weeks work experience. I've literally tried my arse off to get some but can't afford to travel far and it has been impossible!
Having not got any will most likely end up with me failing the unit, does anyone know what this means? I'm terrified as I'm a 3rd year student and was planning to do a PGCE next year so this will pretty much ruin my life. Whenever I speak to my lead tutor about it she just tells me to keep trying and is so not helpful! The module is 20 CATS so I'm not sure if I'll need to resit and up without my honours which will kill me! Will this mean I fail my entire degree?! HELP!

TSR has different forums for each university in the UK, if you find yours you may be able to meet people who'll be going to the same university as you :) http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=307

One positive of dropping out at the end of your...

One positive of dropping out at the end of your first year, is that you will still have an entitlement to three years of full Student Finance funding. You could make a fresh start with a different subject at a different university at any time in the future, if that's what you choose to do. If you continue into your second year where you are, that reduces your future entitlement to full Student Finance funding by a year so that you couldn't easily start again from scratch (you would have to fund the majority of the first year yourself, including tuition fees).

There's no need to rush into a decision immediately. You can suspend or drop out of your current course at any point before the beginning of the next academic year. This summer is a good time to be mulling over your options, so that you're ready to make a decision in September.

Bear in mind that unversity course content can be different. Maybe you could spend a while checking out the same - or similar - courses at other unis, to see if there's one where the modules better suits your interests. Another option is transferring to a different university for the same course. If you find one that's reasonably similar, you *may* (no guarantees of course) be able to transfer into the start of their second year. You probably need to be doing that sooner than September though.

Im American too and have some questions. I have been told that while attending fully to University of Edinburgh, by under stupid U.K rules, I can only work 20 hours a week. Is 20 hours a week enough to save up enough money to pay for tuition, fees, textbooks and supplies, food, laundry, dates, etc,. yearly? Im assuming about 25,000 British Sterling Pounds, a year, is enough? If anyone has significant knowledge and experience, please help!

U.K law also has a difficult, complex citizenship process. Is it possible, for me to graduate from University of Edinburgh and attain citizenship to start a life and future in Scotland?

You will need outside funding (parents, usually) to study in the UK as an international student, as
a) 20 hours a week is a lot anyway, on top of actually doing what you're there to do ie study
b) as a student you're unlikely to be paid more than £6.19 per hour (minimum wage). Even if you worked 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, you'd still only have £12,875 per year. On your visa restrictions, assuming you work 35 weeks a year and go home for the holidays, you'd have £4333 per year.

Given that you should be budgeting around £7500 for living costs + flights home + tuition fees, it's totally unrealistic to think that you can find it entirely through work. The rules aren't stupid, they're there to stop people coming just to work, or working so much it is impossible to study properly.

As for post graduation visas and citizenship, the UK is not keen on handing out passports, so your best option will probably be to marry someone (you think I'm joking...). There is also a visa for post graduation work (it's called something like Tier 2) but it had a minimum earnings limit. There's a forum called UK-Yankee which will be able to adviser you better than I can.

If you like your course and it is hard, then it is worth the struggle. Anything easy is waste of time because you don't grow in your knowledge and as a person.

I'm a shy dude too but on the contrary to you, I don't give a crap about making as much friends as possible. In life, I always had several true friends to trust and it was enough. Also, most of the people disturb me when I study so more interruptions interfere with learning.

If you are concerned about friends, societies are a way to go. Anyway, you study maths. It's intense, mind-numbing and as far as I know, many mathematicians have some extreme hobbies: my friend is one and he likes to snowboarding, bodybuilding. Considering that you're introverted, you need several good friends to hang-out with. More people just makes more noise and life may turn to hell :}

Also here is a quote from the book I read: "You can a lot more friends in two weeks by becoming genuinely interested in other people than in two years trying to make others interested in you."

You have to make a move in order to have social circle. Good luck.

In terms of funding you basically get one extra...

In terms of funding you basically get one extra year paid for - ie the full length of a degree plus one extra year, either for resit or a change of course. I completed one year of a three year course before transferring to a 4 year course which will be fully funded. I guess technically you're repeating 2nd year so you should get the funding but CHECK!!

Transferring isn't easy. You should definitely check with the other unis if they would accept you into 2nd year because a lot won't, especially if the courses are not the same.

I would start by contacting potential unis and speaking with your current advisor/tutor. If you decide that you would like to transfer, you'll need to complete a UCAS application again. If you don't get accepted, I would really recommend contacting universities again to check why. A little bit of negotiation will go a long way. I don't want to dishearten you, but it probably won't be a smooth process - if it is what you really want it will hopefully be worth it.

Hello :-)

I'm currently at Durham university...

Hello :-)

I'm currently at Durham university studying Spanish and English, and... well, let's say the whole experience has not been what I would have wanted out of university.
The city is very very small and claustrophobic, and missing out (both location and student-body - wise) on a lot of culture and diversity. On top of this, despite Durham's great reputation, there are only 4 modules to choose from for Spanish next year, and they're very limited. Overall, I'm not impressed, and have been considering a transfer since early on in first year. The only thing that's keeping me here, really, is fear.

So I wanted some advice from people who have transferred unis into 2nd year (well, everyone actually!). What was the experience like for you? Was it worth it? How easy was it to meet people/ settle in? What provisions did your new university give you as a new 2nd year?

Obviously, it'll be a little difficult for me as a modern languages student, as my 3rd year will be abroad, and I'll effectively be a third year in my 4th year, so there is a risk that I'll know next to no one on returning from my year abroad. I'm also concerned that Durham (which its erroneously excellent reputation) attracts employers. What is Southampton like for that?

Really appreciate your answers, so thank you! :) x

I'm in exactly the same boat and have just about...

I'm in exactly the same boat and have just about definitely decided I'm not going. I know its supposed to be one of those big days in your life and I feel upset I'm not going, but both options for me were far from ideal and I decided that the least bad option was to not go, because as far as I see it, its a day to celebrate and say goodbye to all your mates, get photos and look back on the last 3 years fondly but like you I wouldn't be able to do that after 3 years of problems with people, struggling to make friends and MH problems and I wouldn't have anyone to celebrate with on my course. The thing is my parents don't know the full extent of what the last 3 years have been like for me, they've had hints and I've spoken to them occasionally but unsurprisingly my mum thought I was mad when I said I wasn't going, my dad hasn't said anything about it yet but I can just see his reaction now, he won't be happy, but I genuinely believe the regrets of not going won't be as bad as going and having a rotten day while everyone else smile, I've got enough bad memories from this place as it is.

Its up to you, its your life and degree, if you really don't want to go and feel it would be better not to go at all then don't go just because of your parents.

My recommendation would be Brighton - its got a long, well established reputation as a good Art & Design Uni also with credibility in lots of 'tech' subjects. The town itself is def. better than Portsmouth (Navy town) - Brighton has a great art/music scene, cheap student housing, its by the sea and only 50 mins by train to London.

You can still put Brighton as an Insurance -even though its 'higher' that Kent - if you miss Kent, its possible Brighton may admit you with a lower score than both they & Kent asked for.

Hi LaMode: I'm going to give you my perspective of having been a pharmacist for 25 years. I went to the "best" school in the US (UC San Francisco) but, in the end, no one really cares where you got your degree. I got into this profession, too, because the money was good. That is not the best reason to do anything. In the end, it's your life. You probably feel pressure from family to stick with it but they're not living your life. You're still young (I presume) and have many years ahead. This is the time to make mistakes and learn, not at the end like many people when you can't do much to change things. Pharmacy is monotonous and stressful. My career has had its good times and bad. If you need to take a year off to think things over and travel, do so while you can. No one looks back on their lives and thinks,
When you go into a job day-after-day that you hate, a good income doesn't remove the displeasure. Relax and think it through.
Good luck, Bruce

OK I know I'm a year late on this but my personal...

OK I know I'm a year late on this but my personal advice would be, DO NOT live at home unless you really, really absolutely want to!

If you live at home it'll be just a continuation of school. You probably won't meet many new people since when you're on your course everyone is working, and most people meet their closest friends in halls, because they live with and spend all their time with them.

Go to a new place, there are hundreds of universities, there'll be somewhere for you, small cities, big cities, campuses, town universities ... You'll discover a brand new place, new people (all the same age) and have a great time going out and enjoying everything that's new. You'll be home for half the year in the holidays anyway.

When I was at uni I lived in halls and 99% of my life was based there and with the people I met there. I studied history (so only 10 hours max contact time) and only said hello to people on my course in passing, and I never went out with them.

Don't worry about money or coping - you're only young once, and you'll adapt surprisingly well - it's not the real world (food provided, cleaners, secure compounds etc) and it's an amazing experience.

If you stay at home you won't have any independence and you won't get new experiences or meet new people. Spread your wings and LIVE!!!

Hey I'm 20 and I'm applying as a mature student to University next year. However, I was wondering will I be living in halls like all the other students, making friends with flat mates , also do mature students go out like freshers week and do all the normal things younger students would ?? :)

Age really isn't going to matter so much (especially when from the perspective of most other people - you and an 18/19 year old are pretty much the same age)

What will make more of a difference is circumstance i.e. I was 21 when I started uni so technically, I was a mature student but as far as I was concerned - that was just a convenient technicality that allowed me to get in in the first place (I didn't have A levels so couldn't go the conventional route). If you want a normal uni social experience - presenting and thinking of yourself as a mature student is a mistake; you will just come across as one of the 'gap year' kids who tries to spin a years age difference into some sort of superiority.

I personally recommend coming clean to your department head and seeing if redoing the dissertation is an option. You should be able to do a uncapped retake due to the extenuating circumstances (hopefully).

This discussion is so derogatory to anyone involved in education.

We have invested so much in our education system for so long. People have developed the methods of teaching, all the way from caning over the back of the hands of malnourished children... To kids using hand-held computers to access more information than anyone so far back as 20 years ago could have dreamed of...

Yet we have the same typical, cynical reaction "It's because they're dumbing down the tests" ..... "The A-Levels are too easy".

No-one even entertains the thought of congratulating all the people who have put in so much hard work, and succeeded!

Hello:

I'm thinking there's not a whole lot of difference between Kings and Imperial College. Kings College has done a study to say that wi-fi and other electromagnetic signals aren't strong enough to make us sick when we all know we're being bombarded with the stuff. It's just like sugar, a small amount in one product won't hurt but when it's a small amount in all products, it will most definitely hurt us!

Imperial College has been caught out callously torturing animals in their research programmes and You Tube has censored Licensed To Kill by BUAV investigator so that we can't see what this college is up to without giving our credit card information to show that we're over 18 years old.

So, it seems to me that both colleges are culpable for a lot of what ails us right now and the scientists, as usual, are in denial while enjoying their cushy careers. I'm thinking that, with what I know now, both places would make me extremely uncomfortable!

It was constantly drummed into my head that unless I get a degree I would be a failure forever so when I had thoughts of dropping out I started to stress out. Eventually did drop out and now I can't wait to start an apprenticeship. Moral of the story is university may seem like the be all end all when you're fresh out of school but it really isn't. It's just some place you go to for a couple years to learn some stuff and get a certificate. It's not some big world where you have to stick it out no matter what, get amazing grades and make 00s of friends. It's just one of many paths. Seriously, don't take university so seriously, it will mess you up.

I'm currently in my first year at Cambridge and after two terms, the thought of completing my third is nightmarish. I'm crumbling under the intense workload and the pressure to keep up with my fellow students. During term-time I barely have a minute spare to relax, socialise or go out. I regularly miss sleep and can rarely find the time just to go food shopping, tidy my room or do the washing. I'm unsure that I can withstand the emotional/mental strain any longer and am seriously considering dropping out.

It would be disappointing for me, having always achieved so highly, to end up with no degree at all, so transferring somewhere a bit less intense seems like the best option. I turned down an offer from UCL when I accepted Cambridge, a decision which I am now coming to regret - although, never having studied there, it's hard to say whether I would find it any easier than where I am at the moment -- would current students be able to advise me on this? I realise that it generally comes a close second to Oxbridge in the rankings tables, so perhaps I'm being naive in thinking it would be less intense. On the other hand, perhaps being closer to home (perhaps even living at home) and getting away from the stuffy traditions of Cambridge would make things easier in itself.

The other point on which I'd like some advice, is whether there would be any chance of me transferring directly from my first year at Cambridge into my second year at another university. Having already taken a gap year, I am reluctant to fall any further behind in my studies, especially at the cost of an extra £9000.

Any constructive advice or experience on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

I myself transferred from Cambridge to UCL, but this was from third to fourth year in a science subject. What do you study? Personally, transferring was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. At Cambridge I suffered many of the same problems you have, which almost entirely dissipated at UCL. I found UCL far easier, and much less intense than Cambridge. My grades went up by about 25 – 30%.

Why is she so against you moving away for uni? Is it a religious thing?

You'll be 18 and therefore an adult in the eyes of the law when it comes to going to uni, so you really don't have to listen to her. Be warned, though - when applying for student finance, chances are you'll need her to fill in forms so that you can get funding, which could pose a problem.
Try and talk about it - explain why you want to go and why you feel it's important that you move away.

Training with a sports team
A class in higher maths would definitley be the way to go as it can open many doors in your situation. Regarding your question of what option is best i suggest option 2 for many reasons. A risk it may be, but the results in which you are capable of getting can make the diiference to the life that you are in desperate need of. This may be stressful in the short term but in the long term it will make things easier for you. I sincerley hope this advice helps in some way or another, please feel free to leave a comment or ask me any questions you may have.

Hey up,

I've decided to study English Literature in London, and I'm stuck in matter of which uni I should pick.
The two uni offers which I think are most interesting for me are UEL and London Metropolitan, and I honestly have no idea whatsoever which one I should prefer, as I have no idea whether the location is good.

AFAIK, London Met is situated closer to the center, but then again there is no on campus living (is there?). So I would have to undertake a more or less long bus/tube ride every day to get to uni, plus the living conditions are worse (price-wise).

UEL's student village is right next to the Uni, and as far as I've seen, it looks pretty nice there. But it's further away from the center, and I've read reviews stating that there's pretty much nothing going on around.
I want to avoid becoming too lazy to even bother to get to the center, but really I can't judge this as I haven't spent that much time in London so far.

I kind of need your opinions now to see how much the location really affects anything.

Thanks for your help in advance :)

You will be much happier at any university but LONDON MET. I am speaking from personal experience its been nothing from horrid from the get go. If you want to ask any questions about it or anything. I'm more than willing to answer them. Hope you have fun in UEL

Well having done 5 out of 8 exams all I have to say thus far; I was an idiot for panicking and giving the exams too much respect. Don't get me wrong, I don't think I did well [probably could JUST scrape a 2;1] but I really think had I not been panicking for the 6 weeks before the exams I could have done much better. The panicking absolutely ruined my chances of scoring high marks. I mean even my extremely panic stricken revision I think I could perhaps scrape a 2;1. Damn such a missed opportunity.

Oh well I guess you live and learn. Will definitely be fired up for the third year. 3 more exams to go now and because of panicking will have to cram quite a bit for the last 2. It'll be my first time cramming, gonna be nice!

To put it really simply:

There are undergraduates and postgraduates.
Undergraduates are typically students pursuing a BA or BSc (Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Science), and this is typically the first degree you take.

The two most common postgraduate degrees taken are the MA/MSc. These can be either research based or taught. Then there's the PhD and MPhil, which are independent research projected aimed at uncovering new information in a particular field and publishing these findings.

That's a very broad outline, and I haven't got that much experience to be able to advise you much further.

Yes, you are. You are absolutely spoon fed, you just can't see it. Sure, they tell you to read x and y textbook and learn x and y theory rather than literally making you recite it, but you're still learning exactly what you're told to, and writing exactly what they tell you. Jump! Sit! Roll over!

......... You're being ridiculous. If you go to university to study, say, Psychology, then they will cover the main theories and issues with you, because those are the ones that are most useful to the student. It also allows everyone to be assessed equally. You can't expect the lecturers to just say "Sooo... Read up on Psychology guys, and there'll be an exam in three months. Good luck!". Obviously not. If you've chosen a course, then the modules will most likely interest you and be useful, and there is PLENTY of opportunity for independant learning and further research alongside that.
Your entire argument is just .... :lolwut:

My sister is doing her masters degree now ans she said her second year consisted of watching tv series and playing Xbox xd 3rd year you have a dissertation to write (in most modules) which does take alot of time away, so maybe a laptop for third year will be better, but Tbh, my sister said if you keep on top of your work you still have some time free in 3rd year too. Hope this helps.

You will still be one of the younger students. People do degrees right up to and including retirement. Lots of people have perfectly understandable reasons why they didnt do a degree straight from school, so you wont be alone - and in heaps of ways, having a few years break from education is an advantage.

Its understandable that you are concerned/anxious/worried about 'going to Uni' - but honestly, the age thing will not be as big an issue as you think. After a couple of weeks there, you will wonder what you were so concerned about - promise.

Hi guys,

I would appreciate any advice...

Despite achieving a great classification in your first year they will ultimately let you transfer based on previous qualifications such as A-levels and(or) GCSE's and a lot of the top unis don't accept transfers or people who have dropped out. I know that Uni of Birm deffo don't.

Make sure you gather A LOT of evidence that will prove your OCD was effecting your grades, dont just see your GP on a couple of appointments make sure you try out different techniques this will enhance your chance because unis will think "oh we can see they had a problem but have got their illness under control, they could be ready to study again". Show them that your ready and don't rely on proof of your OCD talk about first year grades etc.

Have you actually been diagnosed with it? I think you should only take one year out unless ur OCD is like really uncontrollable. Going through the transfer process could really stress you out and trigger your disorder (but im sure you already know this LOL).

I have insomnia but I'm not actually diagnosed with it but i have all the symptoms but i haven't started uni yet i start in september and I'm going to try and get a lot of help from GP and possibly counselling. That way if it is effecting my studies i can apply for extenuating (i think thats what its called fk knows lol) circumstances instead of dropping out. I really want to get a 1.0 even if the first year doesn't count the grade will help after graduation.

Sorry for the essay, good luck Tish x

I have a laptop but don't take it to lectures (I prefer to write notes by hand or type later) and don't take it to the library (we can't plug ours in because of it being a tripping hazard and my battery doesn't last long). So I'm sure you're fine taking a desktop. If you find you need a laptop, but one once you're at uni.

I found a printer to be a good investment - library printing costs are high at my uni & not as convenient as doing so from home.

General rule of thumb pack cloths, toiletries, your mobiles/computer/chargers,bedding, kitchen items, any documents you need for uni, some sort of ID, stationary...etc. The link posted earlier is a more comprehensive list. Don't worry, just make a list and tick it off as you go. If you forget anything, just buy it when you're at uni or take it from home the next time you can.

Maybe rather than asking for money, ask for something like the parent/student shopper cards for ASDA - your parents put a set amount on your card each week, which means you can get your shopping and, if you're wise with money, some luxuries. Maybe see if your uni has any temporary employment - one off things that will get you a little extra cash to spend.
Advice needed - Commuting or Halls

Try to find out which halls you are likely to be...

Try to find out which halls you are likely to be allocated to. If you are at the main campus at Hendon, unless you are at one of the ones within walking distance, you can end up spending quite a lot of time on public transport getting there. The Hendon campus is at least 10 minutes walk from the nearest tube station and the Northern line is not the quickest of lines, time it wrong and you can get stuck in the worst of London commuter traffic. So you could end up spending a lot on accommodation and only reducing your commute by 50% on a good day.

If you live in London, spending 1 hour each way commuting within London is quite normal, unless you can travel outside the ever increasing peak commuter times. Use the tfl.gov.uk website to get an idea of how long it will take you to get from the halls of residence you might be allocated to. Expect travelling at peak times to add 25-50% to the time quoted.

There are some times where a long commute can be drag, for example when you only have one class. But that can be opportunity to catch up with people before or after the class.

No point in wasting the time you do have, moaning about the time you don't! 2 weeks is still a long time if you use them wisely.

If you arent certain you want to change Unis why did you apply for a new course? Sounds like you havnt really thought this out very clearly.

To answer your question, unless you used someone at your current Uni as a referee etc, then how will they know you have applied to another Uni? No, UCAS wont tell them and neither will the Uni you have applied to.

At some point you will have to tell Uni A you wont be re-enrolling for Year 2. That doesnt have to be until the end of the summer term. But it does sound like you need to actually work out why you are changing Unis at all.

Presentations arent like 'work' presentations -...

Presentations arent like 'work' presentations - ie. powerpoint etc - they are a student reporting on their reading and/or their response to a question about that reading. They are usually quite informal, done sitting a a table with other students, not standing in front of a class etc. Group presentations may involve something a bit more formal but will still not be that intimidating and your tutor will give you instructions about format etc.

Lots of pre-students worry about doing presentations - but the whole point is that you arent expected to deliver anything polished in Year 1. Doing them and watching others is how you get the confidence to do them better. So, dont worry about it - its a lot easier than it sounds and you'll get lots of help from fellow students and your tutors along the way.

If it were me I wouldn't wait and risk just handing it in, I'd be e-mailing explaining the situation straight away. Yes, it's now the weekend but you never know - surely everyone still at least checks emails over the weekend?

I don't know anything about film or how strict your tutor is, but I sense a risk of "you should have checked this before" kind of reaction. Your tutor might be laid back and say "mistakes happen, sure hand it in Tuesday", or she/he might well say "the mistake shouldn't have been just let to happen" and fail you.

I honestly don't know because I'm sure, like you say, different universities and even different individual tutors have different policies and attitudes. I would do anything you can (without interrupting their weekend e.g. with a phone call) to contact them and try and sort it out asap. If not, Tuesday morning go see them first thing with the new disc and explain and beg your way out of it.

I hope it's okay for you I really do, but let it be a learning curve! Perhaps check your burning has been successful in future.

I have had a few firsts in the past but I don't want to be unrealistic in thinking I have a chance of getting one of those :p I am planning on going into teaching and the courses I'm interested in only require 2.2s, but I see it as a matter of pride to get a 2.1. I haven't finished a semester with anything lower than a 2.1 yet, but I've just done so badly this semester :(

When you go to university you'll meet a lot of...

When you go to university you'll meet a lot of people from relatively wealthy backgrounds. I go to university in central London (and live relatively nearby) meaning that life is extremely expensive. My parents income is relatively high which means that I get the minimum allowance from SFE but I have a large number of younger siblings meaning that the money I do get is extremely limited.

All three instalments of my student loan are sunk into paying rent which comes to £150 a week for me. I do have a number of friends who live further out and pay significantly less (between £80-130), London has good transport links and if you buy a months' bus pass for £13 or so you'll be able to get around relatively easily. A cautionary note, my friend who pays £80 lives far out in Dulwich meaning that getting in on time for lectures is an expensive and lengthy process. Whilst he saves lots of money on rent his travel costs are prohibitively high so you don't want to move too far away from the centre as you'll only incur higher costs.

With regards to living money a comfortable lifestyle can be brought for around £75-100 each week, obviously this is a LOT of money but if you're the type who likes to go out for the odd drink then you're going to have to factor for this as alcohol served in pubs and bars isn't cheap. Below that, I've lived reasonably well off £45-60 per week when I've been strapped for cash, and once as little as £26. You've just got to be really strict with yourself and not spend any money at all. I know some people might accuse me of being excessive but when two journeys on the underground wipe out the better of £5 on a student oyster card you need to have enough money to get by.

My first year at university was pretty expensive, I went out a lot and most likely ate through £100 or more each week. This year (my Second) the allure of constant partying wore off and I met my girlfriend, the social life (generally speaking) is significantly cheaper, I've got out to clubs and bars less but attended more house parties and small get togethers (then a couple of £5 bottles of wine from Tesco's sort your night out nicely).

My time in university has been funded by loan money (normally I get around £4.6k) each year, you should be entitled to more as your parents earn less than mine do. I'm given an allowance and have meagre savings to dig into if crap really hits the fan. This year I found a job during the first term which earned me between £90-120 each week, a nice amount of spending money. You'll generally find that over the period between October and December you have a lot less work to do and you can balance the demands of a job fairly easily. I spent my time as a hated call centre worker, but such positions are relatively easy to get, pay decently and allow reasonable flexibility (although you'll have to work some Saturdays). I quit at Christmas as my course intensifies between January and the effective end of the year in late March.

Hello!

So I come from a country where people are warm and friendly and you could approach a stranger on the street and start a conversation 60% of the time.(Not to be weird, that example is just to explain the point I'm making).

Now I due to start Uni soon and I'm really worried about loneliness. From what I've been reading here on TSR, alcohol is like a must to socialize, I drink, basically my question is why do UG students have such a bad reputation? Will you get a peculiar look if you walk up to another student who seems interesting and try to befriend them?

Where do you think one can socialize normally and meet warm, welcoming people who won't treat me differently because of my race?

Ideas people? :) I hope I haven't offended anyone, I've formed these opinions via TSR so if anyone's to blame it the people that make such posts. ;)

Yeah... that just says exactly what I've told you. Go away for 10 days max if you really want to. Going away for the whole 3 weeks would be very unwise. I would factor in this question too: what if you really struggle in your first year, will taking a holiday during essential revision time be worth it?
You will need to be very organised, as it is very likely that you will have both coursework AND exams to revise for over the christmas break. Most hand-in dates for coursework are early january. What happens if your holiday is scheduled during those times? Think everything through.

The above poster is correct, go and talk to your personal tutor, if they are not available talk talk to the course tutor. Don't worry about what you haven't done, focus on what you can do now.

You are in your first year, assuming you haven't been to university before, you have a wide range of options available to you. Find out what options are available to you at your current university first. If one or more of the options suits you, then fine, if not consider posting back here to seek further input.

Good Luck.

A 2.2 is therefore a 2.2. As the poster above states, just accept that this is what you will probably get and get on with the next stage of your life.

Mine had a system where you'd mark the other people in your group (obviously without them knowing) and if someone didn't score high enough they'd be kicked out of the group and get 0 for the module.

hey there,

thanks for a great reply. I am supporting my family from my own decision and i do not mind at all to be honest, but good news. My tutor reinstated me to one of my modules as he knows i have been keeping track. Since now, i have one module to worry about, im relieved that i would only need to retake that module only if they do decide to withdraw me as two of more modules withdrawn and your out.

im sure with the evidence i have given them, it should be fine.

thanks again!
