The interview might have changed but it can be either. I know it’s cliché but just put in plenty of preparation beforehand. I’d personally recommend getting your hands on an interview techniques book such as Job Hunting 3.0, it’ll provide you with a good basis on what to expect and how to answer these types of questions appropriately it certainly helped me out :). Also the fact that you’re researching BT Apprenticeships on these types of forums is a good head start :).

On another note I’ve heard the deadline for this year’s apprenticeship intake is drawing close so get your applications in this week! *do not quote me on this though!

Hope this helps.

Well I don't know you're personal circumstances...

Well I don't know you're personal circumstances but of the five apprenticeships I applied for the closest (and the one I got) is based 60 miles away. I'm going to have to work all summer to get a deposit down on a house closer to it with my mate and run a car, which technically speaking isn't 100% ideal but it should be an exciting experience in its own way. Unfortunately I think in the current climate you can't afford to be picky- I don't need to tell you interviews don't exactly grow on trees at the moment! A foot in the door is well worth putting up with some inconvenience for if it's an apprenticeship you really want. That's my opinion anyway.

Well done for getting your interview, best of luck with it! :)

Hi Elliot, you're brave to take this first step to finding a new career, and ANYTHING is possible, so don't let the past qualifications you didn't get in school hold you back from starting a new life for yourself, they dont define you or your motivation. Whatever it is you want to do, however daunting it is after being away from school for such a long time, you can do it! :) there may not be people always holding their hands out to help you, you might get bad advice along the way, you might be lucky and meet people who are willing to help you on your way, just dont get discouraged. Because if in your heart you feel its time for a change and you have a passion for something else than construction, then why not! who says you have to do the same thing for the rest of your life? maybe in 5 years you might change your mind and want to do something else. Life isn't about the getting to the end result, it's about the journey. If you ever need to talk, inbox me! :) always here to listen
It was a very daunting experience, and even after I had finished I was convinced I had done abysmally. I would advise you get a good amount of commercial knowledge, as that greatly improves your chances. Understand the programme that you're embarking on, and if you know anyone that has worked for them, name drop! I'm sure that's what got me through to the next stage!! ;)

I have tried college and I hated it so i dropped out, but now I am at a loss as to what my next step should be. I think formal education does not suit me (hated school with a passion and then college) I am interested in working in maybe something in security, eg. police? or the Armed forces (RAF etc) or maybe as a Criminal intelligence analyst?

My question is what are other alternatives to gain an education (if there is one) I know about apprenticeships but I was wondering if there is anything else? I am unable to do A-Levels as they do not suit. And also what would people recommend me studying to help me get into one of the above careers etc?

Hello!

I would really appreciate some advice...

Hello!

I would really appreciate some advice on this matter!

Basicly, I'm 26...Unemployed at present, and have no money. I graduated from UNI ages ago in something I should of never taken as a degree. So I decided that I would like to try and get into carpentry. A. Because I'm good at it anyway B. Because I would be my own boss and C. Because I would like to travel doing it.

So I found a guy who has basically offered me training in return for free labour. He is offering to start paying a labourers wage after a few weeks.
I don't know anything about apprenticeships, and know that being 26 that I would probably have to pay for NVQ's at college.
I'm so skeptical about the whole thing because I don't know the guy, I don't really want to work for free - even though there is the prospect of work after, and don't know anything about how I would do this as an official apprenticeship or do my training etc. and I would have to travel far or relocate - which in itself is a massive commitment.

Any information would be much appreciated!

Hi guys, I'm applying for an apprenticeship with welsh water and have to explain a time where I have shown the following; confidence, organisation, that I can work in a team, that I can work on my own, I can overcome challenges and obstacles, that I know my limitations and how this affects me, I can respond well to disappointment and that I am tolerant of other viewpoints. This to me sounds really difficult considering I play rugby, have good gcses, studying my A levels and haven't had many life experiences to explain a time of all these. This is harder than an English essay. I have to explain a time for each of these in under 150 words. Shall I just make up stories that are sort of relevant to me or what? Haha!

I'm going to start by apologising, I am sorry if I have posted this in the wrong section of the forum.
I am currently in year 13 and have had an offer accept at Durham uni to study engineering. On my application I applied for deferred entry. This is where things begin to go out of my favor. My original intention was to participate in the year in industry scheme. This would put me in a line of work for a year where I would be paid and earn experience relevant to my course. However, it has now dawned on me that there is a very high chance that I will not get a place through this scheme. This means, as it stands, that I have no plans next year and am getting depressed over the matter. Ideally I would like a couple of months paid work experience in the field of engineering. If anyone knows of any schemes or companies that might be able to help me or if anyone has any other ideas what I could do with a year out I would love to hear from you. Any help would be much appreciated.

hey I dont have allot of experience in this but I will try to help in any way I can. A level two quali is always good to have and at your age is probably what you should be doing if you want to get into construction or get a trade behind you. 150 a week is not allot of money but no apprenticeship will pay much more than that and your getting a quali behind you which does count for allot in terms of self progress and in a way value. if the distance is much of an issue then look closer to home if possible and take your lunch with you :@ the jsa will stop if you take it and then dont attend. if your worried about it just being labouring then its probably not the case and just hearsay at the end of the day your their to get the quali and thats it, any decent tradesman will tell you that you learn 95% of a job on the job, if you decide to do it then just grit your teeth and knuckle on through pal, we all have to do it. best of luck with your decision pal. ps take into account the length of the apprenticeship and you can get pro advice from the national careers service but at the end of the day the decision is yours to enjoy.

I left school in January after a year and a half of A levels. I have been applying for business and admin apprenticeships ever since. I always get an interview with the training provider but haven't got any further. Now,is it me just not being suitable for the positions as every single one has been readvertised at least once and some three or four times. If i'm not suitable fair enough but why readvertise so many times is no one suitable? I am polite, smartly dressed with good grades but I am getting disheartened as I cannot get a chance with any of the jobs. No one gives me any feedback. I am beginning to wonder if there isn't actually any jobs there or is it a con? I didn't expect to get one instantly but it's very frustrating not even getting a chance and then jobs are constantly being readvertised.Any advice?

I'm on a business and admin apprenticeship now and I hate it. It's just not for me, I thought it might be when I started but I'm regretting it now. Try a website called First4Skills, they have loads of apprenticeships, and the tutors are generally nice. I'm not sure why they would just keep re-advertising, I can only imagine how frustrating it is not knowing their reasons. But yeah Google 'First4Skills' and go from there.
Good luck!

Hi, thanks for your reply! I read it a couple of days ago but I've just been pondering over what to do...
I've decided against that course I had to pay for, the company rang me 3 times today and twice on blocked (didn't pick up) - must be pretty desperate!
I looked into Dental Hygine which is what I want to do, all of them ask for a GCSE grade A-C in biology, which I don't have, I did science and got my lowest grade, D. They also ask for a Dental Nurse Cert.
-- neither do I have.
Today I looked on NHS courses, which seems to be the best option...do you think if I pass the dental nursing I will be able to straight onto hygine? Even if I don't have A-C in sciences.... That's the aim, I don't really want to be a dental nurse as the pays rubbish!
The course starts around Feb next year (unsure of the month 100%, can't remember), Im going to applyig but in the meantime I'm going to do Au Pairing in Italy or Spain and then Chalet Host in France during the winter.
When does the course your looking at start?

thanks again for your reply! Helpful :)

honestly? You won't get into dental hygiene/therapy without biology ( some prefer human biology ) so my advice would be get into a practice or Nhs health board offering trainee dental nurse roles. I'd look into biology/human biology at night as well.

You said you already have a degree? You need to definitely get human biology once you have that you will at least get an interview.

Dental nursing is an alternate route but again they want this as well as biology. What the dental nursing qualification does is put you in front of candidate with highers/a level and no nursing qualification. Yes dental nursing pay isn't great I'd do it maximum 1 year In a dental practice maybe 2-3 in a Nhs hospital.

So first thing is her ur human bio, and try and get a trainee dental nurse job. Glad you haven't went down the paid course route they are obviously very desperate as you say.

Dental hygiene therapy is a great career, as I mention I have a degree already I have human bio and chemistry too and had voluntary exp in a practice. I didnt get in to Glasgow or Dumfries. The competition is feirce. There usually 10-14 places per dental school. There are usually hundreds of applicants for these places. The application process and competition is very intense. All the schools definitely insist on bio and usually want grade b or above. The dental nursing will definitely help you but without biology you won't get In.

Register on www.apprenticeships.org.uk...

Register on www.apprenticeships.org.uk - you are not making any commitment, but it allows you to search.

Do a search around IT /Computing/Business and a post code. Be open minded about the description - it might not be called IT apprentice. DON'T apply cold. Call the apprentiship training provider for more details first.(see below)

There are quite a few (I am in Warwickshire) in this area.

This is the time of year they are advertised, ready for starting in the summer - if you are leaving school after Year 12, then now is the time to apply. Otherwise, look now, and keep an eye on it, so you are ready for next year. Braodly, Apprenticeship=GCSE level. Advanced Apprenticship=A level standard and Higher Apprenticeship = up to degree(and beyond sometimes!)
Top Tip - at the bottom of each listing it says 'delivered by....' and will have a college or training provider. Google them and have a look on their website- there may be more opportunities.

Get a good CV together - mention all the software you can use: an IT CV needs to be more technical than a usual one. Especially anyting other than MS Office - used Photoshop/Indesign/Serif/Video editting/Audacity/Web design/ Phython/PSP/HTML/databases ?? mention any you have used -they are not expecting you to be an expert, but don't lie - they might test you.

Clean up your online profile: Facebook set to private? Twitter polite; not full of offensive tweets?
Join Linked-in and follow some IT companies. Use Linked in ONLY for business, no 'chat'.

Good luck.

That's a tricky sector to work in. Getting a foot...

That's a tricky sector to work in. Getting a foot in the door first with some work experience this summer might help:

Students that I have known go into this area have been successful with their local councils.
Most have a food and/or product testing department for Health and Safety Trading Standards
: http://www.hullcc.gov.uk/portal/page..._schema=PORTAL
Do your homework first - find out as much as you can about what they do.
Does the Council have an apprenticeship manager? If so, contact them first - they may be able to open the door for you within the lab section - or they may outsource the work, so might give you an introduction to the company they use.

It might sound weird, but don't use the term work experience when you contact anybody. Say 'offer to help out' 'be an extra pair of hands' That kind of thing.
For some employers the term 'work experience' has very negative connotations (Put 'Harry and Paul Work experience' into youtube!)
After the Council, tried local schools? Schools SHOULD be offering apprenticeships, just like councils: Theyt should be setting an example to other employers.

Have a great CV ready - show your practical and scientific skills. But call/email/chase them -show you are keen or they will ignore you. (I used to work for a publishing company and we had a policy of ignoring work experience applications unless they followed it up.)
Good luck- don't give up, but have a plan B - apprenticeships are always tricky to get started.

Also i was thinking.. if i did an apprenceship after a levels could i go to uni after? Would universities see the apprenticeship as a good thing?

If you simply want to work with children there are heaps of ways of doing this without going to Uni. There are lots of Childcare training schemes - and there is 'other work' in schools like being a Teaching Assistant, running After-School or Holiday schemes etc etc. Also you dont have to go to Uni now.

My boyfriend has been applying for apprentiships in Software Development for well over a year. He's been applying through a company (unsure of their name) that find and tell him about availible apprentiships. However, he's not had any luck. Either, there's none availible or when they do contact him about an availible place, it never goes anywhere as they never contact him back. It always feels like they get his hopes up and then just never respond. He's had a couple of opportunities and interviews, but he's always been beat by people with 'more experience'.

My question is have you had similar experiences? Is it that there's no place for trainee apprentices? Was it a hassle for you to find and get an apprentiship? How do you prepare for an interview?

My advice to you would be what I say to myself....

My advice to you would be what I say to myself. Is the apprenticeship a means to an end (in that engineering is something you THINK you might like but likely won't). If that's the case, I would say go for the apprenticeship, because the experience and the free degree in engineering is always worthwhile (and the pay and the company reputation on top of this). The upside though of university is meeting a lot of people your age and making new friends, and studying a degree you already wanted to do, but without the experience, the pay and the reputation of that company on a future CV.

As I said, either option is viable, depending what you want to do. Doing Mechanical Engineering doesn't stop you from going into technology later on if you so wish. True it will difficult without the relevant experience in the field of your choice, but if you keep a hobby outside of work, keeping your foot in the door as such, then you have multiplied your chances greatly. If on the other hand you end up enjoying the mechanical engineering, then you can stick with it of course. Decent money to be made in the field.

As I said, is the apprenticeship a means to a different end for you (will you fall back into technology)? If so, I would still go for the Bentley apprenticeship either way. The benefits outweigh the negatives. If you decide you don't like it in the first year and it's super bad, then you can drop out, but I would stick with it either way. The range of skills you will learn is invaluable in a career and the people you will meet can place that 'Guaranteed' stamp almost on your CV. Especially if you get friendly with a senior manager or director. Besides that, you can always fix something mechanical afterwards, maybe make a side business while you do technology if you don't like it. There's endless opportunities out there :) haha.

I've looked at; Pitman training, ILEX and the Institue of Legal Secretaries. Does anyone have any experience with any of these courses? Or has anyone got any recommendations? Thanks!

Have a look at some part time or maybe some volunteer work at a nursery, even if it's for half a day when you're free. You might do it, see where others have got to and think this isn't for me. One the best things I've found from working short term in places is the difference that people makes. Some jobs I thought I would hate, but they seem to attract a nice, friendly type of person. Other, well paid jobs I've done I've ended up hating as no one helps one another and it's all putting others down.

Don't worry about your CV, most people are sympathetic to a change of direction. If you're really worried, you can always leave it out (particularly if it isn't relevant to the direction you are wanting to go in).

Try to focus on the end goal. Do you hate the course and the potential job at the end of it, or just the course?
