It won't harm emailing the Universities, but most of them say that they want Computer-Science applicants to focus on maths. I know for a fact that Cambridge say that A Level computing qualifications are discouraged, especially if they replace maths. I would suggest doing Maths, Further Maths and Physics, although it depends on what you like. And as I've said, the Unis will know best so I'd definitely try contacting them.

hi, i got offers from manchester, bristol, york, endinburgh. i was thinking of choosing between manchester and bristol... but seeing a few posts in this site and also unistats.com made me choose York! york has a new campus and great facilities and employment wise too it seems better. After seeing many posts here i finally chose york!

but if i hadnt come across this site... i would definitely have chosen manchester over bristol.... as mancester associates with great companies such as EAgames, google, microsoft.... and has a rich computer science background than bristol!

second degree undergraduate or postgraduate?

Hey guys

So I've been heavily considering...

Hey guys

So I've been heavily considering undertaking a second undergraduate (UG) degree in Computer Science. My first degree was in maths which I did well in academically. I figured doing a second UG degree would be best as it would give a good foundation in computational theory and practical experience as well as the time to hone my interests. (Also, the fees aren't that high because I'm Scottish and considering Scottish Universities)

Saying that, I'm now thinking that it does not really make sense to do this seeing as I already have a degree in a related area (maths). It would take me at least three years to get the UG and I could probably use the time more efficiently by pursuing postgraduate study or otherwise, but I'm still unsure about what to do. Taking a "conversion" type MSc might be a good idea but I'm concerned it may be too fast paced for me and I'm also not sure yet on my specific interests in CS.

So my question is a general shout to those with first-hand CS experience. Has anyone got any relevant advice? Does it make sense for me to pursue a second undergraduate degree? Thanks :)

I don't recommend the, 'Easy Steps' series, I got...

I don't recommend the, 'Easy Steps' series, I got one for C++ and it didn't go into anywhere near enough detail, I kept having to research stuff online to get a proper grasp and the pages were just covered in my annotations to make more sense etc.

Personally I don't think books are as necessary now and you can probably learn online with good ease providing you find a decent tutorial. For Java I was kind of lucky and taught by a uni lecturer(near enough on a one-to-one basis since no one else picked it up) who came into my work place, then she left and I was taught by the lead programmer, but I was pretty ahead of everyone so I ended up being mostly self-taught anyway. I think they key is giving yourself exercises to do to actually learn the code properly, I was given loads of exercises and then given feedback about how I should make the programs more efficient, the right industry standards, better algorithms I could have used etc.

The most indepth book I would recommend would be:

Object-Orientated Programming with Java - An Introduction by David J. Barnes

Though it is very thorough I think you'll get the best understanding of the theory behind it. I've only really used it as a reference book though when I've been on the train.

To be honest, once you've got a basic grounding I'd recommend just familiarising yourself with the Java Docs(accessible online) and referencing it as you need.

I don't know, perhaps learning it in a commercial environment leads to a lesser grasp of the theory but I think I've learned it at a more accelerated rate than you would at uni. Though maybe you are just better going through a decent book page by page as opposed to doing projects as you learn.

EDIT: Plus, if you really want to know the ins and outs, a couple of months after getting a basic grasp of the language and the concepts in OOP I recommend going through this:

http://www.amazon.com/SCJP-Certified.../dp/0071591060

And making sure you pass all the exercises at the end. I've been going through this gradually with the hope to get the vendor qualification eventually. You probably could get away with rote learning a lot of it, but at the same time it offers a really good incentive to just learn the underlying concepts and ins and outs etc.

EDIT 2: Just noticed it's quite hard to find the book I recommended on Amazon, here's the link:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Object-orien...ed+programming

Surprised by the cost really, I thought it'd be cheaper. My work bought a couple of copies and gave me one.

Here's another one by the same author that someone else had recommended but I didn't get:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Objects-Firs...ed+programming

I'm not sure what differences there will be but it uses the BlueJ IDE which is a good, basic IDE for beginners.

Hello, sorry for hijacking this thread; thought it would be better to use this one rather than open up a whole new topic. I'm currently in the same position as OP and I'm considering CS as one of the two main degrees I'm considering. Will one be at a disadvantage applying for top universities with very little coding experience? I'm hoping to learn the basics between now and next year, however I've heard of many applicants applying to top universities having considerable coding experience. Unlike OP, I'm not put off by coding and am interested in learning it.

Thanks in advance

Hi
This is an Oxford point of view, but we're not that different other top Unis when it comes to CompSci. Our courses start from first principles, so we aren't looking for any specific knowledge of computing in applicants. We are looking for an interest in the subject, but if that's a newly found interest that's fine. We are very much looking for students who have really developed their mathematical thinking. Both the MAT test that our students sit and the interviews are very maths-based. You don't need to know anything about computing to excel at them.
Take a look at our current student profile page (Hannah's profile may be particularly relevant to you) and you'll get a feel for the range of experience students come to us with.
We don't have a check-list of previous experience (other than Maths A Level or equivalent) that we want candidates to have. We'd rather hear about what you've chosen to do in the field of computing and what interested you about it. It doesn't have to be earth-shatteringly original, or hugely advanced.
Hope that helps.

Here at Oxford, if I remember correctly, we're a little under 14% across the three CompSci degrees. (To put that in context we've made around 66/68 offers each year for the last couple of years, and in the couple of years before that it was in the 50's. So the % of women can fluctuate quite a bit, with very little change in the actual number.) We'd like to encourage more women to apply: that's why we hold an annual Women in Computer Science event (amongst other things). I'd be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on anything else we could be doing to attract more women...

Hello. So basically, I want to study Computer Science, and I don't really mind where, but I wanted to do it in a Russell Group uni. I have no offers, since I just realised I want to do CompSci in late March. I was hoping to get A* maths, A* psychology, B chemistry. I've been doing so many maths papers, and in all of them, I get A*. But in today's paper, there were questions I never even heard of. And I missed out so many questions and it was just a general failure on my life. So I obviously didn't get anywhere close to the grade I wanted. I still think I can get A* for psychology, and if I'm lucky a B for chemistry. But since maths is the only requirement, it's obviously the most important one. Should I take a gap year? And do a year in industry? I don't know what to do now. Any advice?

Hi, this is my first thread so please be nice!

I currently do Maths, Further Maths and ICT for A Level (my sixth form doesn't offer Computing) and I'm hoping to do Computer Science at University. After looking around here, lots of people are saying that Universities don't think much of ICT at all, and as I've never done any sort of computer programming before I'm not sure if ICT and the maths subjects will be enough. In this case, I was wondering what sort of (preferably free) resources I can look at by myself at home to prepare me for the course, so if anyone knows of anything, please let me know :)

Thankyou!

I'm a Computer Science first year and I didn't take ICT or have any computing qualification. I do have a Maths A level, but there are people on my course who didn't, they bring everyone up to speed in the first year.

Preparation:
Not necessary but I'd recommend learning to program as it makes first year ridiculously easy. Learn by getting a good book and writing a piece of software, like a game. Start simple with tic tac toe/snake, then try writing more advanced programs like tetris.

Good luck!

I see nobody has replied to your thread and you may have already made your choice but still... I also applied at Soton and Manchester and both of them are really good choices each having its pros and cons. I applied to Birmingham, Nottingham, Loughborough, Leicester and Nottingham Trent.
Doing Maths , I.C.T and Psychology. Dropped History at AS cause it was my worst grade.

I am confused on what course to do computer science or computer systems engineering?

Well I do Computer engineering, so I'm guessing its the same.

Computer science, is statistical maths, programming, etc
Computer engineering, is half Computer science and half electrical and electronic engineering.

I think it would be better if you looked at the modules specifically and get an idea of whether you'll like it or not.......I find computer science modules generally quite easy, a bit of effort though..........whereas the engineering side is much harder, though the projects are better and more applied maths based.

So I haven't been able to find much information...

So I haven't been able to find much information on these courses on other websites or on this forum so I wanted to start a thread for some discussion and help or advice.

I am hoping to attend Hertfordshire Uni in September but I also have a place at the University of West of England (UWE).

Basically, my question is for anyone on either the Multimedia Systems Technology course or either of the Interactive Media Design/Software courses at Hertfordshire. I want to know how these are and more specifically what kind of things you get up to. Does anyone know closely related they are to Digital Media at UWE (http://courses.uwe.ac.uk/G451/)? There seems to be various points of overlap but I'm not sure if it's just better explained on the UWE website than it is on Hertfordshire's website. I can't seem to get a good overview and understanding of the units or the course content.

The digital media course at UWE sounds more appealing to me at present but I was hoping to hear some opinions of the mentioned courses at Herts before making my firm decision.

Thanks for your help in advance!

If you'd like to get into game development, try...

If you'd like to get into game development, try having a play around with Unity: http://unity3d.com/

It uses modified versions of Javascript, C# and Boo. I used it for my University project this year for making a mobile application, but I'd say it's much more suited for game development for Windows and Mac platforms.

For more advanced things, and for C++ development, I'd have a look into the Ogre3d engine: http://www.ogre3d.org/

Like Unity, there's plenty of helpful tutorials on YouTube to watch. It's never too early to learn how to use these sorts of tools, I'd say.

Your A-Level choices should be okay because of Maths. Like you said, the other two are possibly useless so science-based subjects like Physics and Chemistry would perhaps look better, but on the whole, if you're predicted high for Maths and you can show your enthusiasm during an interview then you should be fine. You sound like you have more dedication and experience in programming than I have at the moment, and I'm a 2nd Year CompSci at Bristol!

All the best!

Career prospects are basically about as good as they get, if you do well, you'll be in demand. I have an interview for a placement year at an investment bank on monday for example. Computer science probably has better prospects than CIT but its still pretty good. People go into all kinds of things from IBM, Microsoft, to EA Games to Banking, Consulting. So pretty much whatever you want to do you can do. It's a hard course though, incredibly hard. A lot harder than most other universities, looking at some other universities syllabuses and exams. We have been pushed to out limit this year and the workload has been insane. Don't listen to people who say that first year at uni is a doss, because this year has made A levels look measly in comparison. But you will learn a lot, the teaching is mostly good, and overall it's been a good year

Basically I am debating whether I still want to...

Basically I am debating whether I still want to do my firm course (Physics) and have been looking into other options since the end of April. I noticed Software Engineering was available through Extra at the same uni I have firmed, which was fantastic: loved the module options and it has a sandwich year, which is a huge plus! So I contacted the admissions office to enquire about changing firms, to be told to ring this guy.

Rang him and he got back to me that in fact I CAN'T apply for Software Engineering, as it is under Computer Sciences (which WASN'T in Extra) and so the spaces are already full, and would I like to keep my choices as they are. I reluctantly agreed, even though I wholeheartedly believe I won't be happy for the next three years in my current state.

This was last month, and I just checked UCAS again and it is STILL in Extra! Should I contact them again?! I am very confused as to why they wouldn't take it down if the quota is full for CS, and it is actually really pissing me off!

Helllppppp

Hi, I have been wanting to do computer science for some time. I am currently going to be getting in BTEC level 3 IT diploma distinction stars. I have got a few questions that I need answered and I hope you guys can answer since I am completely lost when looking up for this type of subject.

Are students eligible for student loans abroad?

What is my qualification worth to other countries?

Is there anyway of learning their language for example what I would want to hopefully do is to learn Japanese for a year at the University and then progress to learn computer science. I have seen courses that you can go and learn Japanese over there but I don't think that would be covered under a student loan even if you do get a qualification.

I hope any of you guys can help me but I am really lost when it comes to this type of things and my dream is to learn computer science in another country which hopefully is Japan.

So, if I am correct in understanding - you're expressing that although not the same thing, companies simply interchange the words?

I realise perhaps wasn't explaining well, I was looking more at job requirements due to degree rather than title of job aka a job requiring a 'computer science degree' was a computer science based job, otherwise they'd be asking for anyone with an 'IT degree'.... Thankyou for clarifying.

Yep that's exactly it. "CS job" means CS job, "IT job" could mean IT or CS job.

I would say it depends on two things:
*availability of campus machines - if there are lots of machines to use then you may not need a laptop
*whether you want to take lecture notes on it - some people on here say 'no one brings laptops to lectures; the typing makes too much noise' but where I study lots of people do and it doesn't bother anyone. You could take notes on an iPad but you might wanna get an external keyboard.

You can always decide when you get there and pickup a used thinkpad on eBay or something.

As TenofThem said, an Access course sounds like the way to go in your situation, they last 1 year and you can take classes during the day or in the evening (depending on what is offered at the centre you choose to study at) and it gives you a qualification accepted by universities to study at degree level. It is a level 3 qualification, equivalent to A-levels.

You may be able to receive funding to help with your studies depending on your circumstances. Have a look at local colleges to see what they have to say about financing an Access course.

Any advise on which is better. The M&T program at Jerome Fisher University of Pennsylvania or Comp science at Oxford. Tough choice

Oh wow. I was at Penn recently and met some people on the JF program. I was doing CS @ Penn as an exchange student from Edinburgh. Inbox me if you want great detail but overall US very different from the UK, especially Penn. I can comment that CS and SEAS at Penn seemed to suck, the entire schools focus is definitely Wharton. I'm not sure how much JF is skewed to SEAS or Wharton to be honest, the program is probably very flexible.

If I was in your position, I'd take Oxford. I think the UK in general wins hands down for undergraduate, and I'm quite certain that Oxford CS is much better than Penn CS or SEAS. In terms of the business or management side of things, I don't know much about how Oxford fares for that but Wharton would definitely be more (if not the most) prestigious for that in the US esp.

But yeah, undergrad in the US is a bit dodgy, especially those dual program degrees (though this is definitely one of the better ones). The advantage of Penn is that you can probably switch into a full time Wharton program or something while the program at Oxford will be quite rigid. It's also 3 years at Oxford vs 4 at Penn. Price should be a huge factor also, Oxford definitely wins there.

At the end of the day the Oxford route is more 'honest'. Oxford is definitely more prestigious overall. It's also a ton cheaper, a public university, and you will learn tons in the program. The US way of undergrad is more like a business, especially Penn. If you want to work in the US Wharton will set you up very nicely though - but an extra year and a ton more money, it's hard to say if it's worth it...

Good luck!

After doing some research about jobs/schools etc, I came to the realization that I should be doing something that I like to do for a living, even if it doesn't pay as well. I'm not saying money isn't important because that way I can afford to do the things I want, but what good is a life where I hate my job that I do? What I'm struggling with here, is the fact that I don't know if computer science is the way to go for me. I LOVE technology and all the things that it has to offer, but do I really want to be working at a desk programming things all day? Not really. I would like to be doing something more business/technology related. Even something like app developing interests me, but I don't know if computer science is the way to go anymore.. Help me :/

I went a software development route through my courses etc, and I am currently in a helpdesk role (what alot of people will be in when they graduate IT) and tbh, I hate it, the job is boring as hell, you hav to deal with angry or annoyed people on the phone all day, usualy calling over trivial matters, and when you are not doing that there isnt really that much to do lol (in my job anyway) like I have some networking responsibilities but they dont take long.

Anyway what I'm getting at is I sympathise 100% because I hate my job so much, and whilst I still consider programming as a job, I regret everything I have done to this point purely for the fact its ended up in this job lol

Now I get paid well, considering I dont even have a degree (HND) I have enough money to live the lifestyle of my choosing, but the time at work makes me severly unhappy,

Not meaning to put you off IT or anything but low level IT jobs are really bad, I mean I cant say what a programming job would be like, ive only ever done projects in college etc as goes that,

But, this is the worst job ive ever had, and ive worked on a farm before lol, so yeah I am currently lookin at my other options, have done a fitness instructor certificate and a business managmenetr advanced diploma which both took like 6 months - 1 year

So im not saying you will deffo follow what happened to me but, if the same thing happened you might end up changing paths also,

Be 100% sure of what you want, and in the end of the day, a degree in anything looks great, but you mightent get the "new job" you want if your degree is irrelivant, i.e. computer science grad tryna get into being a vet lol,

Bad example but you get the jist, hope I havent filled you with dread, just giving a fair warning to what can happen to the select few,

Just to point out, I've never had problem getting IT jobs due to not having a degree, its always been about relevant work experience, though now I have a full year of that doin application support and network support and several months doing web design for a local charity.

That being said I still feel fortunate to have a job and be earning well over average for someone our age.
