Honestly I think a lot of what people say about their driving lessons is bull (don't forget, the majority of first time drivers are teenage boys!). I've asked my driving instructor, and my trustworthy friends and family what their first few lessons entailed and nobody drove home within the first few lessons. A lot of first lessons are just a cockpit drill, not even trying to move off. I did moving off and stopping in my first lesson, and approaching left turns (1 hr) on a 'nursery route' so there was nothing for me to crash into. I did my second lesson (1.5 hrs) on a proper road at night with no traffic. Then my second lesson (2.5 hours) in traffic. I think a lot of it depends on where you live though. I live in manchester city centre so driving myself home would require me driving over the Mancunian way - a road more treacherous than the rainbow road from mario kart. If you live in a sleepy village then you're more likely to be able to do your lessons in normal traffic. Congrats on passing after 30 hours! That's given me a bit of hope :)

I drove home on my second lessons, and I know a lot of people who have done so too. Some people pick up the basics quicker than others, but everyone gets there eventually. It also depends how pushy the instructor is. Some may want to keep on the quiet roads until you get used to controlling the car, others may push you into the deep end and let you drive home.

To be fair I am a very safe driver and I take good care, I have been in a lot of scenarios while driving and know how to get around them, safely as possible, like I was approaching a roundabout and one car hit another and I had no choice but to miss that exit cause my route was blocked, I anticipated and planned well ahead... depends what type of learner you are.

That's not what I mean, in that case you saw something happen and reacted to it.

What I'm on about is reading what is going on around you and anticipating things before they happen. Over time you learn to watch other drivers as much as their cars, because you can often tell what somebody is going to do by looking at them and spotting where they're looking, anticipating what other vehicles are going to do at junctions, seeing what the traffic ahead of you is doing and reacting early, positioning yourself so you can react to other motorists when you get closer to the holdup, etc...

When I went for my driving test in April I was...

When I went for my driving test in April I was determined to pass first time. I went in with a massive enthusiastic smile which kinda creeped out those in the waiting room and my examiner. And when my examiner asked me a question about tyre pressure I bluffed through it. When he said ok move off from the centre I was so ready. I did my obs and everything went to go and the horrible sound the car made told me I was still in neutral! So embarrassing but I laughed it off. (now is when I realised my examiner had no sense of humour and wasn't one for idle chat -he didn't talk to me once in my test other than to give me instructions) the centre exited on a busy tricky road but it was ok. Met a massive lorry that put me under some pressure. Had to do a parallel park which was ok (just exaggerate your all round obs before moving off &check your blind spot by practically sticking your nose on the glass!!!) Stalled 4 times because of some nerves. Had a massive busy roundabout 2 mins away from the centre which I was CERTAIN failed me because I thought I moved off too early and the cars came up to close. After that I was all "sod it I've failed" and drove like I didn't care all the way back to the centre. (By that time the heating in the car had made me so sweaty I felt like I was literally in hell but I didn't DARE open any windows because I didn't know when the correct time to do so was and I didn't want to fail on just opening a stupid window!) When we pulled in he asked how long I've been driving the car and when I said about 40 lessons he was surprised that I stalled so many times but I assured him it was just some nerves. In the end I actually passed with 6 minors (4 clutch control, 1 mirrors and 1 braking.) I was so happy I wanted to kiss him. (i didn't ofc). So to all of you guys retaking honestly be as calm as you can because you're probably driving better than you think! Go in with I massive confident smile telling yourself that you are already a fully qualified driver and this person next to you is just along for your amazing ride! My friend took her test 5 times and she's a way better driver than me anyway! Good luck to all. Btw if anyone knows the best car / insurer for young drivers please let me know! I'm still a slave to TFL!

I passed first time with one minor. BUT my minor was reverse bay parking so was about 1inch from failing!
I was nervous until I sat in the car and realised who my test person was (someone notorious for failing people!) but I think I had convinced myself that much that I was going to fail that I began to believe it. That or my whiskey tasting relaxing spray was working!
Just remember to stay calm, think before you do something, breathe, try to relax, look in your mirrors A LOT (mine loved the fact I looked in about every 5 seconds). And they want you to pass really!
If you do fail, don't worry! Lots of people fail, my friend failed 7 times but she finally passed! It's nothing to be ashamed of, you don't even have to tell people!
Good luck! Let us know how you got on!

So I just took my test for the first time and failed - 3 minors and 1 major. The major was approaching a roundabout with 3 lanes, he said "ahead 2nd exit" .. to me this means middle lane, as the left is for going left and the right is for going right... so the middle means ahead, no?

I got a major for going into the middle, apparently the wrong lane, then he looked at me and repeated the instruction as if I had gone into the wrong lane, so I moved into the left lane and it was too close to another car.

What would you have done in this situation? I still think I was in the right lane, as the middle lane leads onto the left lane of two on the next set of lights on the roundabout, whereas the left lane was an immediate exit to the left.

It was the ambiguity in his instruction that threw me, and I asked him to explain before we got there, he just repeated the same ambiguous instruction.

What would you have done in this situation, left lane or middle lane?

Doesn't it depend on how many exits there are? Roundabouts with 5+ exits are not uncommon, and you should presumably be in the left hand lane to use the 2nd exit on those.

Brake only to the speed required - fully engage...

Brake only to the speed required - fully engage gear option - steer = Brake gear steer

There may be some situations where engaging the gear whilst nearing the end of the braking might be needed - example going down steep hill and needing to turn left with another too close behind - these cases are rare because earlier braking will control the one behind

The reason that the gear is engaged after the braking has finished is so the vehicle is better balanced and the driver only has to do one thing at a time, not two
Selecting 1st gear whilst braking is often an advantage at give way situations but as that is done under 10 mph it is not likely to cause any issues

Those that say they are unable to separate the braking and gear selection are generally drivers who do not plan well

If you're on a hill and you need to get the...

If you're on a hill and you need to get the clutch control going you need to find the right balance between how much you lift the clutch up by and how much you press down the accelerator - the reason it stalls when you lift up the clutch is because the accelerator isn't down enough so the car will just stall without enough revs.

So what you basically need to do is slowly lift up the clutch and press down the accelerator at the same time, once you've reached the right amount of revs you'll be able to drop the clutch to stop you from moving forward or lift it up to move forward without stalling. I had the same issue when switching from a diesel to petrol car because for some reason (I'm sure a car fanatic could tell you why) petrol cars need more revs to get the biting point than diesel cars.

Getting the clutch control sorted is probably the most difficult part about learning to drive but it comes over time. :)

Absolutely, you should have done it about £180 ago! Learning should be fun and after all, you are paying for professional tuition. After 8 lessons you will still need lots of positive instruction and encouragement from your instructor. Errors are part of the learning process and a good instructor will use these to help you progress. Good luck with your new instructor.

Amazing and scary. Instructor looked at my documents, then spoke to me about the cockpit check for a bit. Then he took me to Green Lanes in Harringay, which is a bloody scary place to be, especially when you're driving on main roads for the first time ever. After lots of practise and learning, he let me drive home (that same day).

Considering a lot of people's instructors didn't let them on the road for the first lesson, or drive home, or took them on quiet roads, I am very thankful that my instructor threw me in the deep end. 26 hours in, I've booked my test for July :-)

I've come very far since the beginning! I used to do so many silly things and be very nervous. Now, I am a pretty confident driver. I am a bit fast, though :$

I would not worry about the minors you got...

I would not worry about the minors you got because as a lot of people are saying, they are everyday things that drivers do. The reason you have passed is because you are a safe driver, meaning that your minors don't reflect your attitude to being safe on the road and instead are probably just slip ups to do with how you handle the car. For example, a minor for stalling would not fail you because it does not affect the safety of yourself or anyone around you. However, not checking your mirrors and blindspot whilst changing lanes on a roundabout would fail you because that means you could harm somebody or yourself - as long as you are safe, it does not matter if you are a bit clumsy at manoeuvres or whatever and you will be passed. The fact that you passed means that you are a safe driver. Congrats, my test is on Tuesday!

Im learning to drive and have been for about a year (since April 2012) and I have taken around 50 lessons. The problem is, I'm just not getting the hang of it. I'm making mistakes that I should of stopped making after like 5 lessons. Like, as an example, stalling nearly everytime I have to set off while uphill, etc. Like yesterday, I had a lesson and stalled twice, and both times I caused hold-ups. One time I was at traffic lights which were at red, and they went to green, but when going to set off I stalled. I took so long getting the car back ready to set off again that the lights went back to red (and even then my instructor had to get the car ready for me), which obviously caused a big hold up in traffic. And also, its not just clucth control that is the problem. its other stuff aswell (such as parking, etc) I'm starting to worry that I'm one of these people that just cant drive. Somebody who has taken around 50 lessons and been driving for a year shouldnt be holding up traffic twice for aslong as I did yesterday. I saw a video on Facebook today of somebody taking 14 minutes to do a parellel park between two cars, and all the comments were like 'how did they get their license', 'they shouldnt drive' etc etc, and I thought to myself 'I wouldnt even be able to do a parallel park between two cars at all.' Should stop learning or keep trying?

Also, changing to an automatic (I'm currently driving a manual) is not an option. Everybody I know (family, friends, neighbours, etc) all drive manuals and i'd feel weird been the only one driving an automatic.

Also, I'm starting to worry about cost which is why I am considering stopping. Because at this moment I've already done around 50 lessons and feel nowhere near ready to pass. The way I feel I could do 200 and still wouldnt feel ready, and I just cant afford that.

I totally feel your pain haha, I was exactly the same, I passed in september just gone but i'd been learning for 18 months...I guess it just comes more naturally to some people than others! But I definitely wouldn't stop now, you're probably closer than you think, for ages I was miiiiiiiiles away from taking the test, and then all of a sudden I just improved looooads and was ready...I think it just takes different people different times to get the hang of it. True I guess money is a worry but someone else already said i think - it'd be a bigger waste to give up now and effectively just lose all the money you've spent already! I probably had easily 100 hours....maybe even more..! :$ It just takes longer than you expect

Haha I was like that until 3 lessons before my test, it kinda just clicks and when it does you feel so much better.

One thing my instructor taught me (which I mentioned above) was the general rule:

On a two lane roundabout:

To turn left: Go in the left lane (obv)
To go straight on: If it's before 12 o clock then go in the left lane and only signal after the last exit, if it's after 12 o clock go in the right lane, signal right then left to come off.
To turn right: Go in the right lane, signal right and then left to come off.

On a three lane roundabout, usually the left lane is for turning left, middle for straight on and right for turning right, unless the road markings tell you otherwise.

One useful thing I also did was to go on google streetview and run through the roundabouts several times, it really helps!

Good luck anyway :)

Going road ahead - watch out for those using the two lane rule on the three lane roundabout

You should also consultant people, see their experience, as there are some very very good private instructors, my one was someone who taught my uncle, and my dad quite recently. Peoples reviews make a huge difference and save you cash.

I can't really say about anything else but I'd suggest you do the test in an instructors car, just because I've heard that examiners feel a bit more at ease if they're in an instructors car, as;

1. They have dual controls
2. Someone trusts you enough to use their car.

If you turn up in your own then they may feel uneasy, thinking you've not had any 'proper' tuition and feel as though maybe you're not trustworthy enough to use anything but your own car.

Good luck :D I passed second time, never got a serious for my mirrors but got 7 minors the first time for them and 6 the second time.

I've bought the DVD I linked earlier, haven't tried it yet as suddenly my computer has broken down :@ I'm halfway through reading the highway code on gov.uk, then I'll start the DVD - do you reckon I can pass this test in 3 weeks time provided I spent an 1 hour a day on it?

With ease, do a mock test when u get ur computer working and you will see how easy it is, I guarantee you will get at least 35 as most of it is just common sense :) There are apps available on iOS and android if u wanna revise on the move;)

EDIT: Yeah the driving test success is excellent, I used the 2012 version and only did mock tests, the parts you got wrong had sections from the highway code to explain why it was wrong. The practical videos are useless tho :p

Hi dudes,

I am applying for a provisional license by May. Seen that it takes approximately 21 days to process the provisional license application, followed by 1-2 weeks for theory and 4-6 weeks to get a driving test date.

However it would be grateful if someone can give a more detailed time frame for each of these steps. Also it’s greatly appreciated to know the city which has the least waiting time to get a practical test date.
Note: I drive my dad’s car without a license

With regards,

The issue is booking the tests....... especially if you live in Urban centers........ it can take months before a place opens up or sometimes randomly appears which is in a few days, sometimes a month away depending on the time. With the practical test being the harder to book at your preferred time.

I would say ideally go and learn with a proper teacher, as you can pick up bad habits from your dad or not know the entire routines and rules behind things. As well as practicing LEGALLY, if you get caught the implications are quite huge, the instructor would make sure you learn around the test centre so you get a advantage in knowing the local roads and possible test routes.

So, I'm having my practical test this Friday. I feel quite relaxed about it (so far:S) and I'm trying to think positively. I feel quite prepared for it. I'm not worried about maneuvers (maybe a bit about bay parking, because I haven't done this maneuver as many times at the others) but the only thing that scares me is, forgetting about something, for example doing observations, checking road signs, letting pedestrians cross the road etc.
So, maybe you guys can help me and give me some tips about my test. Tell me what I need to remember.
I have made a thread about my most common mistakes while driving, so feel free to help me fill it in with other suggestions :)

Don't stress just relax, just treat it like when your trying to drive with your instructor and trying your best not to get told off......or over doing it.
If you make a minor, or something like stalling, don't let it get you down, its one of the things which seriously puts people off and they lose their confidence......... if its happened its happened and just carry on, don't over compensate for the mistake.

Should also state, I think I stalled twice during my test, one at a roundabout as I was supposed to get on.

I think in general, the examiner is looking for...

I think in general, the examiner is looking for you to check your interior and right mirrors whenever the situation around you changes; so if you need to slow down or speed up; enter a new road; approach a ped crossing; see pedestrians walking near the edge of the path with their back to you; pull out to the right a bit to avoid a stationary vehicle (and interior & left when pulling back over to the left; overtaking... pretty much all of the stuff that you might click as a potential hazard during the hazard perception part of the theory will need an interior & right wing mirror check. If there's absolutely nothing happening so you haven't been prompted to check your mirrors for a good 10 seconds or so, then may as well give them a check again just to get an update on what's behind you.
I'm not sure if your instructor is willing to do a "commentated drive", but my instructor did this with me after getting a ridiculous amount of minors on mirror checks on my first mock. Basically him non-stop talking for 15 minutes about everything he's seeing, saying stuff like (to recall a moment from my one) "Pedestrians up ahead with their backs to us, might well step out without looking, we'll check our interior and right to make sure we can stop safely. Pub up ahead, some pissheads might stumble out of those doors straight into the road, we might not want to but legally we'd have to stop for them, so we'll check our interior and right to see what's behind us. Pedestrian crossing up ahead, interior and right again. Car ahead of us is slowing down, interior and right again in case we have to slow down in a second as well." All of that happened in about 30 seconds of driving in a town road. Just gives you an idea of how aware and all over the mirrors you have to be. The first few minutes of his non-stop talking were actually offputting, but I quickly got used to it and it was almost like someone was telling me what to do in detailed steps. So for the next few lessons I had his voice going non-stop in the back of my head while I was driving lol. It eventually went away and by then I'd completely gotten into my head when the right times would be to mirror check, and became a lot more alert on the road in general. Pretty amazing really, definitely the most productive 15 minutes of all of my lessons. Didn't get a single mirror fault over all 3 of my actual tests so must have worked a charm

Obviously, interior and left checks are in order whenever you turn left or even move to the left a bit, e.g. when you've just overtaken a motorbike and you're pulling back into the left, or if you're pulling up to a curb on the left.

Hey. So I thought about sharing my tips about driving with you guys.
I thought it would be a good idea to share any suggestion, so it will help us with passing our tests.

I'm having my driving test next week, and I'm just trying to remember everything that will help me with passing my test. I had about 20 lessons with my instructor and I have been driving my dad's car since I've turned 16, so I'm pretty confident about my driving.

The only thing that bothers me about my exam is forgetting about observations, missing any road sings and stuff like that. So let me share with you some of my tips, which should be useful for you, and which I found difficult to remember while I'm driving.

First one - When you're braking harshly CHECK YOUR MIRROR! I know this is kind of stupid, because if I'm going to brake rapidly, looking in my middle mirror is not going to change my decision. But my driving instructor tells me that, I should be checking if there's a car behind me, so I'm not causing any hazards to the driver behind me, by braking harshly
Second one - When there's a pedestrian in front of you, who's crossing the road, always wait for him to cross the whole road. don't just drive away, when he's in the middle, because what if he decides to turn back...
Third one - when approaching a roundabout or a junction, change your gear on your way instead of stopping before a roundabout and changing it there. You might have a chance of entering a roundabout without stopping, so be prepared before joining in
Always check what's the speed limit, remember when there's a sign which says the speed limit is 40mph, don't acceralate before the sign. You can only do it after you drove passed it.
Don't think that driving slower than you should be is good. It slows down other drivers and creates a hazard.
Don't be scared to change gears, driving on second gear through the whole town is not going to impress your examinator.
Be prepared to stop for pedestrians, when approaching a pedestrian crossing
Always use signals, but make sure you don't use them to early, as it might confuse other drivers, and then at the same time, don't signal just before making a turn. This is really important when you're driving on a roundabout or when changing a lane.
And the most important one - OBSERVATIONS!! Do them, when you're pulling away or during maneuvers, look through your left and right shoulder, then use all three mirrors. When turning right remember to check the middle mirror and then the right one. Do the same when turning left. Make sure your examinator sees you doing it. Don't just 'move' your eyes. Move your head as well.
REMEMBER that you can never be too careful, but at the same time, don't be a pansy. Show confidence.

So guys, I think that's all what I wanted to point out. You should consider these points because as a learner driver you probably at one point made some of these mistakes, just like me, so remember to work on things which are not your strongest points.
I can't give you any more tips, as I haven't passed my driving test yet, but these are the most common mistakes, which I have made, therefore I hope you will find them useful.
Wish me luck on my test guys. I'll come back next week and share my thoughts with you.

Certainly useful tips especially the looks we need to do. Good point-make the tester aware that the looks are made.

Is this normal???

I've had about 16 UK driving lessons, and I still don't feel confident.

I can drive down main roads and so on.

I move off very slowly and sometimes stall my engine. Also, my steering is not that great.

My instructor says I can't do much until I get the theory out of the way. I plan on doing the test next month.

I still have to learn bay parking; parallel parking; reversing round a corner; and three point turn.

Do you think I will be ready to take the test in July?

Overall stopping distance = Thinking distance +...

Overall stopping distance = Thinking distance + Braking distance.

Be sure you understand the difference between braking distance and overall stopping distance. Some questions may ask for one, some may ask for the other, so it pays to read carefully.

Multiple choice answers usually give both metres and feet alternatives, so you can learn either metric or imperial, then take your pick.
