Yo!

I've got a standard maths offer for entry this september. It's A*A*A or A*AA and a 1 in any STEP paper or distinction in AEA. This is a pretty crazy offer, but us maths students are in fierce competition I guess!

At AS I got an A* in full Maths standard A Level, an A in Physics and a A in Theatre Studies (different, I know). This year I'm doing the full Further Maths A level, and completing both A2s in Physics and Theatre Studies.

I also had to provide my UMS scores for my maths modules to UCL when I applied, any questions, just ask!

Congrats on your offer, that's great! :P

Just a quick question; you said hey asked for your ums marks in your modules. Did they specify that they were looking for high ums or anything in particular?

And also, I'm slightly worried because one of my maths exams went horribly wrong two weeks back (I wasn't feeling too good) and I'm almost certain that it's going to bring my further maths grade down to a B. so with that in mind, I'm set to get 2 A's (maths and physics) and 2 B's (f maths and chemistry) which is quite disappointing if I'm honest.

In terms of ums, my average (excluding d1 which would be around 40 odd) is 85/86 which isn't great but isn't too bad either. What were your marks like, if you don't mind me asking of course, and do you think I'll still be in with a shot at UCL next year or is it worth taking a gap year? I say gap year because I can almost guarantee maths and further maths A* at the end of next year, but I'm afraid my grades won't reflect that.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to me and id really appreciate some feedback and any general sort of help.

Thank you! And sorry for going on a bit.. :$

Frankly there isn't going to be much difference between the top London universities, it's like the old Oxford vs Cambridge prestige (though certainly Imperial would be better for computer science in London). UCL does appear higher than KCL in pretty much all league rankings in the UK, and the real clincher for me is.... it has more nobel laureates affiliated with it (27) against KCL which is just dry of geniuses (only 10).

I did the same but for Philosophy. I did love LSE but I've seen a lot of warnings about a cliquey social scene and a fiercely competitive atmosphere and these things put me off... supposedly even the few 'fun' societies are full of competition :\ UCL seems a bit more fun, its SU looks heaps better with a much broader range of clubs/societies, and UCL has more open spaces for relaxing and revising :) I just got a better feel from it, even though I was awestruck by LSE's library xD why did you go for UCL in the end? :)

Thanks again for answering Torvus. Like you said, with the range of Core subjects and pathway modules too it looks like there will be a lot of different skill sets to flip between in each area. Was that something that was hard to adjust to, or on the whole did you find you adjusted to this way of working quite quickly?

I think they wouldn't have picked us if they thought we couldn't handle the mixing of skills. It does make things a bit harder as you have use different skill sets, but I think that is ultimately a good trade off as when it comes to graduating and seeking employment those transferable skills are invaluable.

I know this is another stupid thread but I feel bad about my rejection from Imperial.

Can anyone please provide me with anything Statistics or anything to make me feel good about going to UCL.

Please don't judge me, I have Exams and I need motivation. I'm not sure what to Expect from UCL, but I feel like I would be more motivated to go to Imperial.

Initially I didn't want to go to Imperial because the social life is apparently worse than being in isolation in a prison, but now I am having second thoughts. I've read a few articles in the news and they are really stepping up their game partnering with MIT etc. and thinking of creates their own Entrance Exams....

Any thoughts would be great, again don't judge me, this is just my humble opinion on things right now, you may change my mind.

There are 15 UCL Libraries, loads of reading rooms.Senate House Library is an incredible resource and it's essentially 'on campus' and we've also got the British Library 10 minutes walk away which is a deposit library like the Bodleian but has the added benefit of incredible exhibitions on a very regular basis.
The UCL Special Collections are often overlooked as well as they're tucked away in the basement of the science library but there's actually an entire team of conservators who restore incredibly valuable books.
UCL students have access to all of the libraries in the University of London for free (Kings, LSE etc.) through the inter library loan system.
I would say that the claim made is a pretty formidable one - with all those resources you're going to find what you need and then some.

Oh, I don't dispute that the library provision is awesome (and having the British Library on your doorstep must be pretty awesome). But I live three minutes from the Bodleian, which has all the books (and puts on exhibitions too, thank you :p:), five minutes from my College library, which has only failed to have a book I've needed maybe once, and will buy anything within a week anyway, five minutes from the Radcliffe Science Library, ten minutes from the Philosophy Library, and pretty much every other library on that list is within a ten-minute radius and will lend to me if I need it. My college's Old Library has the first bookshelves in England and is the oldest continually-functioning academic library in the Western world. Insofar as it makes sense to rank library provision objectively, I reckon Oxford has at least as good a claim as the London unis.

Hi All,
Basically long story short I submitted my application for an MRes at UCL last night. It said thanks and you should shortly receive a confirmation email. I looked this morning and there's still no email. I thought it was like an automated system and I would get one.
I know I'm not expecting an acceptance letter or anything but just something to say the application went through would greatly help my nerves.
Shall I just call up the department and ask?
Did this happen to anyone else?
Thanks

I had a problem with my Portico pages when I accepted an offer. They did not change to reflect my decision so I panicked a little thinking there was something wrong. I gave it a few days but nothing changed. I emailed admissions - admissions@ucl.ac.uk. They were very helpful and sorted the problem out right away :)

I was in Ifor Evans Halls in Camden. It wasn't bad. It's honestly about making good friends. Camden halls are good because there are some decent places nearby (i.e. pubs, sports facilities) and good events. Roundhouse, Electric Ballroom, KOKO etc are all good music venues nearby. Just up from Ifor is a skatepark and astroturf if you want to play football or skate etc. Its only 25 min walk to regents park and a 35min walk to uni.

If you cant be arsed to cook then catered is fine, but the food wont blow your mind.

Good luck!

Hi,

Well don't be nervous Sam and Nick, who conduct the interview, are really lovely and put you at ease. I think what worked for me was that I kept up to date with recent publishing news and mentioned it in conversation (Things like big releases, mergers, successful books). Also there's an opportunity to discuss the problems within modern publishing which is a nice way to show off your knowledge. Other than that your interest in the course will stand to you, they seem to be really excited about what they do it's really lovely. Good Luck!

I defnitely think that rejecting an offer from Oxford, if you're more interested in the course offered at UCL is not a bad choice at all. Oxford (and Cambridge for that matter) are really good universities, but I reckon they're maybe praised a little bit too much sometimes, leading to prospective students believing that there is no way other universities can be as good. UCL, however, is a great uni and right up there with Oxford. Also, you should think about whether you'd do as well at Oxford, if you're more drawn to the other course content-wise, as at UCL, because you might feel less motivated.

Hope this helped a little bit!

Just wondering, considering how utterly impossible I am finding it to cope with the workload at Cambridge, whether it is naive to imagine that things would be remotely more manageable if I was to transfer to UCL (especially considering the Guardian ranked UCL above Cambridge for my subject [English] in 2013).

I've just finished an English degree at UCL. I've never studied at Cambridge so can't make the comparison really.
We do a 2000-4000 word essay a fortnight, reading for seminars (normally 4-6 a week) and various presentations and translations. That's first year workload. In the 2nd and 3d years this is the 'basic' workload and on top of that you'll have longer essays and more exams.
Most find it a manageable but not testing workload. I still managed to work part time alongside my degree and people have busy extra curricular marks but if you want the top grades then you have to read extensively for your essays and exams.
You say you want to transfer? If you've already started a degree at Cambridge you'd probably have to start from first year again. UCL English doesn't normally accept 2nd year transfers because our first year course is a foundation for the other 2 years.

You'll also get just one degree and one grade (ie you just get the MSci, rather than a BSc and MSci).
Same with BEng and MEng programmes.

my igcse grades were good all A*s and a few As but my AS grades were 2 As and 2 Bs which isnt up to the standard of ESPS and i dont think my predicted grades were good either but i had a good personal statement so i got invited to the assessment day where i sat the TSA and had an interview, was sure i did well in the TSA (they don't tell you your score however) and i guess i also did well in the interview because i got an offer. this is for the esps dual degree by the way

I got worse normal GCSE grades and got ABBB. Predicted A*AA and got an offer. However, mine was for the normal degree. I think that they like to vet people using the TSA rather than straight A levels, because there were 2 Oxbridge candidates there that I kept in contact with, both with better grades than me, yet only one got an ESPS offer. So perhaps it's a lot more down to non-grade determinants than we think.

Also, I got an offer! See you guys in September, hopefully, and hopefully at Ramsey!!

Ok, so I had made my mind up a couple of weeks ago. Or at least I thought I had. This is what's going through my mind right now. After much researching and debating, I prefer UCL's pathway modules to KCL's, however, I still prefer KCL's core to UCL's. Do I have to love the core as well? I know it's 50% so it's a quite substantial amount. I just don't think that I would enjoy it and I would probably enjoy UCL's pathway modules more than KCL's. Any current students who can help me out? (Possibly Torvus who has been so helpful?)

I think postgrad study depends on whether you did full or partial economic spec. So, I wonder how grad prospects would also vary?

Hi,

I'm currently in ESPS. I'm not doing economics but what I can tell you is that if you choose to do economics within ESPS, you should go full econ because the few optional modules you will get with elements of economics are not really worth it.

Other than that:

- if what you want to do is mainly economics, go for ESPS (and you'll have the language part as a bonus).

- but if you really want to explore both Philosophy and Economics, clearly go for Phil and Econ. Because ESPS is broad and open, but in terms of actual flexibility it is less flexible than dual degrees (you do have one major specialization)

If you have any question don't hesitate.

Ps: dcautain welcome to ESPS!

The only options which were really presented to me relevant to the Vikings were apparently a module on Old Norse and a module on Viking Studies in the last year (though apparently they are quite broad?) - I wanted to focus on it more consistently. Perhaps Edinburgh's more 'general' approach just wasn't for me. Shame really 'cus I loved the city and the feel for the university. The Scandinavian Studies department seemed really lovely and passionate too, but as I said, the problem was more with the history department.

Well Scandinavian Studies offers Old Norse and Viking Studies as honours options yes. But as you were talking about history I assumed you were referring to other courses around the university. As said, there are some good courses offered in the School of History that are fairly Viking coloured that would probably be open to even single honours students from Scandinavian Studies. I should add that Edinburgh's Scandinavian approach isn't 'general' per se - it's just not a Viking-obsessed degree - it does what it says on the tin really - studies Scandinavia. Hopefully Nottingham works out for you.

Hmm I guess that is true. The guy I spoke to at Aberdeen said that UCL and Edinburgh's Scandinavian departments weren't in great shape either, so I am just worried something awful will happen and they cut Norwegian or decide to focus only on modern Scandinavia.

Well that's a little unfair of him - I'd say Edinburgh's in the best shape it's been in for years - more people in the department (staff and students) than for a while, more courses offered, etc.

The Law department is located in Bentham House. This is where all the academic offices are, as well as some lecture theatres which are set out lik a real court room.

You can find it on Endsleigh Street, as you can see on this map. http://www.ucl.ac.uk/find-us/

However, this doesn't mean that all your tutorials and lectures will be there. They may happen in different tutorial rooms and lecture rooms all round campus.
Next time, you can ask your questions in this thread; http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show...83795&page=168

Hi Waterstorm,

Thanks for your message - much appreciated! I'm still confused though,as I'd looked at the timetables previously as suggested above, and the timetable that came up (https://cmis.adcom.ucl.ac.uk:4443/ti.../routeTimet.do) seems to show there are lectures/classes/ lab time Monday-Friday, 9-5. So I'm grateful to you for getting back to me and would be really grateful if you could let me know if you're doing the course, and how much time is planned in and how much does not have specified times.

My job involves working specific hours and I don't want to give up good daytime shifts, but will need to if the free time doesn't coincide with shift time.

I'd be really grateful if you could let me know how it's worked out for you at UCL.

Thanks! (and happy Bank Holidays!)

Yeah, I'm currently in my final year of biomed. When you go onto the timetable, click on "change display" at the top and then click on one of the weeks between 5-16 for term one, and one of the weeks between 20-30 for term two. Otherwise you're looking at both terms together and it'll look like a lot!

And bear in mind, if you do the same for year 2 and 3 it won't be the same as you have quite a lot of choice in what modules you can pick - and this will change your timetable.

I have recently chosen my a level choices for sixth form in September - the ideal course for the future is European Social and Political Studies (though I'm not pinning all my hopes on it!) The a-levels I have chosen are: German, Philosophy, Psychology and Biology as I wanted a language, a humanities and a social science - biology is just an extra, as it is a subject I enjoy. I am confident with my choice of German and History but I am unsure about the other two - are they good a-levels for this course?
Those on this course currently - what a-levels did you take?
I'm looking to share a flat/apartment with other people and would prefer to meet someone in person versus trying to arrange a roomate online.
I'm clean, respectful and would like to be near campus. Because I'm a bit older, I would prefer not to live in a hole.

If you receive 30-39% in an exam you are allowed...

If you receive 30-39% in an exam you are allowed to take the same exam in the summer period. This means the maximum mark you will be able to get is 40%, but at least you have passed that module. I don't know how many exams you can actually do this for?

If you completely fail the module, you are able to retake it the following year.

You are able to graduate with honours having passed 11/12 units in the whole 3 years.

So that means that technically you will be able fail 1 unit (or two half units).

However, my course doesn't let me progress into 2nd or 3rd year if I have failed more than 1 unit. I would have to retake the year.

Does that help you answer your question?

Hi everybody,

I am an international student...

Hi everybody,

I am an international student from the Netherlands and I have received several conditional offers to study Mathematics, a.o. one from Imperial and one from UCL.

So last week, I went to both universities and looked around. My impression of the two universities was pretty good. It seemed to me that UCL has a nice atmosphere with a very diverse student body in a nice setting. Moreover, there were lots of asians at the maths departments (I am also an asian). However, the maths building/department looked kind of cramped and small and the facilities looked old.

On the other hand, the Imperial college has great facilities with an impressive campus. The student body is diverse as well, but different compared to UCL's student body. The big difference is the atmosphere, people didn't seem to be very enjoying their time at Imperial.

Well I must take into account that I was visiting both universities around exam periods, so people were probably stressed out and didn't have enought sleep.

So could you guys help me out and give your overall view about both universities and perhaps tell me why you have chosen for UCL. I do know that both maths departments are outstanding, although there might be slight differences. I am particularly interested in the overall student experience. Thank you.
