It depends on what the OP's plans are for after graduation.

I'm not the most well informed regarding Cardiff...

I'm not the most well informed regarding Cardiff University or clearing but what you're suggesting sounds like a risky move.
Cardiff is quite a reputable university and I'm guessing they have a lot of applicants and that their courses get filled quite quickly.

Have you used the UCAS course finder to see if the course you're interested in at Cardiff has spaces available in Extra? (I'm guessing if it does you have more of a chance of it being in clearing too although its not guaranteed).
Have you contacted Cardiff and asked about the possibility that the course you're interested in would be in clearing?

You could end up in a situation where you've rejected two universities and then end up having to go to a different university of similar standard anyway because all the prestigious university courses are full, or worse, you may not get in anywhere you'd like to go.

The safest options for you would either to be accept that you'll be going to the university you've already firmed, or if you've got your heart set on Cardiff you could take a gap year (I'm on one - complete waste of time) and apply to start next year?

I know I will probably drop maths, as I pretty much failed the exams lol, so my other subjects are geography, history and economics, was just wondering firstly what are good books that I can read about my courses? So I can say on my ucas form...
And secondly, which are the best universities for these three courses? I would appreciate those who have been there, got the t shirt or are getting the t shirt ATM.

Call UCAS and explain this situation to them. You...

Call UCAS and explain this situation to them. You may need to call them more than once to speak to different advisers as its likely they'll give you conflicting advice.

This may be a bit complicated as obviously you have conditionals and you've got a firm and an insurance.

If you can apply through Extra you'll have to see if your firm will release you from your course (make clear you don't want your application completely withdrawn) and then you'd have to contact your insurance to do the same.

You say your firm is out of your league? Well, they must not think so because they made you an offer (based on predicted grades and personal statement). Even if you don't make your predicted grades they may still accept you onto the course.

Best of luck!

Tips on each sections:
Verbal Reasoning
You...

Tips on each sections:
Verbal Reasoning
You will be presented with eleven passages of text, each associated with 4 items (questions). For some of these test items, your task is to read each passage of text carefully and then decide whether the statement provided follows logically. There are three answer options you can choose from:
True False or Can’t Tell

Quantitative Reasoning
You'll be required to solve problems by extracting relevant information from tables and other numerical presentations. For each item, you may be presented with four items that relate to that table, chart or graph. For each item, there are five answer options to choose from. A simple on screen calculator will be available

NEW ADDITIONAL SECTIONS FROM 2014 ENTRY

Abstract Reasoning

There will now be 4 different item types in the UKCAT test.

For type 1, you will be presented with two sets of shapes labelled “Set A” and “Set B”. You will be given a test shape and asked to decide whether the test shape belongs to Set A, Set B, or Neither.

For type 2, you will be presented with a series of shapes. You will be asked to select the next shape in the series.

For type 3, you will be presented with a statement, involving a group of shapes. You will be asked to determine which shape completes the statement.

For type 4, you will be presented with two sets of shapes labelled “Set A” and “Set B”. You will be asked to select which of the four response options belongs to Set A or Set B.

This section requires constant practice!

Decision Analysis

The Decision Analysis Test assesses the ability to make decisions in situations of uncertainty. It requires candidates to make informed judgements with information that is incomplete, complex and ambiguous. Using a deciphering scenario, the test requires a move from logical reasoning to decisions requiring increasing degrees of judgement.

Situational Judgement TEST

The test consists of a series of scenarios with possible actions and considerations. The questions do not require medical or procedural knowledge. All you need to do is base your arguments strong and reflect on the question for the best possible answer.

I hope this helps you.... All the best!

Check the admissions requirements at a variety of Universities (they'll all be a bit different), but make sure these are A level subjects you enjoy and you are capable of getting decent grades in.

Christ Church Canterbury, for instance, ask for : "300 UCAS points including BBB at A2 Level, or equivalent, plus GCSE English, Mathematics and Science at Grade C or above, and a minimum of two weeks recent experience in a relevant classroom setting."

So, if you havnt done already, get some solid long-term work experience in a primary school - you'll actually need more than your 'work experience week' if you are to show you are a) keen and b) aware of the challenges of dealing with 30 kids all day. Voluntary jobs at a primary school and a cubs/brownie pack would be a good start.

PS. Psychology is very much worth doing if you are considering any job in education.

They will probably want an evidence that you speak English at the level that allows you to study at university, but you can just ask them if they would waive the requirement of IELTS, Cambridge tests or whatever for you because you sat GCSEs.

People state different sorts of things, but while it can be helpful at times, it can also be pretty much useless. If in doubt, ask the universities yourself, but remember that it's primarily your suitability for the course, not your ECs, that will decide whether you'll gain the place.

What do you mean by "fail"? Like if you don't get anywhere via first round, you'll apply for law via Extra? That would be a problem, because you'd resubmit the same personal statement you would have used for veterinary medicine. Clearing might be less stricter in this respect, but there are only a few choices in that pool.

well the OIB would ensure the proof as its A level equivalent but not all OIB or even people who have done the english GCSE (my french school offers it to them, although I did mine before in england) actually speak proper english..

Fair enough just it helps communication skills and all that kinda stuff no?

yes or just for a year later applicant or an application in France? I mean I would reapply for veterinary naturally but my parents are forcing me to have a plan B, and i am really interested by those topics too just not as much. I'm just keeping my options open as Vet Med is so hard to get into!

So long as you meet entry requirements for your course (usually 3 A2 levels, some also require a forth to AS level) , then a failed exam won't affect your chances. Critical thinking isn't highly regarded compared to your science subjects. If in doubt, you can always email admissions.

Anything law related or to do with the criminal...

Anything law related or to do with the criminal justice system will help show your commitment Look for voluntary work at your local law courts, citizen advice centre, probation service etc etc. Even just sitting in on court cases in the public gallery (no matter how basic/low key the cases are) will help.

Look also at anything that gives you 'people skills' - much of your professional life will be about talking to people without a law degree. Get used to it, and learn the skills.

Talk these up in your PS - there is no point in just listing stuff if you dont tell the Amissions Tutor why you did it or what you got out of it in terms of confidence, greater maturity, awareness of 'other people's lives', or simply 'knowledge' of how the law works.

Doing an Arts or Humanities or Social Science degree and writing anything you can for any publication/outlet you can whilst you are at Uni will be just as good. Its the writing that will build your career - not doing 'a course'. If you are only capable of getting D grade A levels this suggests you dont have what it takes to be a professional journalist.
I see your point but is there really a significant difference between A and B ? especially when if you only get a B only in one module and A in the other one so that the overall would be B ?
Thanks for the answer xx

Whether A or B is a vital difference at AS, only a specific university could answer. It's worth contacting the admissions tutor at, say, Edinburgh - they are brilliant at getting back to you and just want to make sure you don't waste an application, but apply to them if you meet their requirements. They aren't out to trick you. They can tell you exactly what they look for and whether AS grades are key.

As to whether an A in one module and a B in another makes a B overall, I'm not an expert, but it would be don't to percentages and/or UMS, I guess.

Hi there

I think i'll be predicted BBB but I want to go to a Uni (Liverpool) to do Mechanical Engineering which requires the grades ABB.

Could I still apply?

Thanks.

There's nothing stopping you from applying.

But personally, I think it might be a waste of a space as they do clearly state they want ABB. And they could very well reject you straight away without even reading your personal statement.

However, if you honestly think you can achieve those grades then talk to your school about your predicted grades. Maybe if you did some extra work, they will up your predicted grade? I know mine did for maths. I was predicted a B, I knew I could get an A. I did some extra work, and they upped the predicted grade. I did eventually get an A.

And if all your other choices are all achievable grades and more BBB offers, and you have nowhere else you'd want to apply to. Then go for it. Nothing's stopping you. I would seriously consider upping the predicted grade though.

Well if you took it in 2010 then some modules will be from 2009 so they would be 5 years old by the time you take some modules in 2014

Is it still the same syllabus
Do Sociology unit scores have a shelf life of 5 years

You could not, for example have taken AS Maths in 2007 and now just do A2 modules because the syllabus has changed ... if you had done A2 then and wanted to just re-take a module that would be a no-no too

You may be fine but I suggest that you check with the board/centre before starting

Definitely worth a check; nothing to lose and might save a lot of heartache. The syllabus may have changed and module combinations may be different.

On the other hand, if it's the one you got an A in, and you are happy with that, then you obviously don't need to retake it.

Hi everyone.

I have a query about clearing.

I am interested in applying for some Undergraduate courses in clearing for Sept 2013. I have not put in an application or anything yet-am I right in thinking I have to approach the University first to see if they would welcome an application from me, and if so then apply via UCAS to them? Just a bit unsure about the procedure and dates etc.

Thanks

You need sign up for UCAS beforehand. If you apply through UCAS after 30th June then you will go straight into Clearing. You'll get your clearing number from track around mid July. But yes, before applying you need to contact universities and give them your clearing number and answer any questions they have for you. If you get any informal offers, you need to pick the one you are interested in and apply for that course (you can only make one choice) and hopefully they'll confirm your place soon after.

As someone who also loves computer science, I'll offer my own perspective which disagrees slightly with yours. Computer science degrees cover programming, which is definitely useful if you want to go into game design. However computer science is very largely about the mathematics and philosophy behind information processing. As a result of this, I reckon that people who take computer science because they want to design video games won't enjoy a lot of the degree.

To the OP: There are universities which specialise specifically in game design. Being from Scotland, the first university which comes to mind is Dundee, which offers a few courses in different aspects of game design. I'm sure there are also many universities in England and Wales which offer these degrees, and it sounds like they'd be suited to you.

Lots of CS degrees can have video game design specialisms though. Where the first two years are usually core modules but the final year or final two years are almost purely game design.

Nevertheless, if OP is certain on a particular field (e.g. game design) then a dedicated course would be better. However a broader computer related degree such as CS or CIS would offer a wider range of jobs at the end should he change his mind.

Thank you all for your replies :D Really helpful! In reply to NotMyToothbrush, I'm currently at AS, but if necessary I can either re-do AS or pick up different ones next year. Obviously, I know Computer Science is a good A-Level to have as it does relate to what I want to do, but my school doesn't offer that as an A-Level, instead, they just offer ICT. My AS-Level subjects are ICT, Maths, Media and Art. And wow! You do A LOT of subjects, I can barely handle 4!

Dont panic and think you have to get your application in as soon as UCAS 'opens' the new cycle in October. Aside from the exceptions of Oxbridge and Medicine, you have until mid-Jan 2014 to finalise your initial application. Applying in October gives you NO advantage over someone applying in January.

Take time to slowly and calmly read Uni prospectuses/websites, go to Open Days and think carefully about what you might study and where. Remember, you don't have to go to Uni straight from school - there is no shame in taking a Gap Year if you arent sure about your choices yet. And you dont have to go to Uni to have a happy and fulfilled life - see www.notgoingtouni.com for lots of interesting alternatives.

Manchester also seems to have a great program. But there are many factors to consider. Just looking at earnings 6 months is can be misleading. No doubt LSE is on top because of it's prestigious name, but City seems to have the better actuarial program. But those 2 are really good if you are sure u wanna be an actuary. Other university's like Manchester rate pretty high on league tables but the salary may be less because you come out with less exemptions but you are looked at very favorably because you are better rounded in maths in addition to the actuarial science specialization. All the more so if u aren't 100% sure you wanna be an actuary.

Forget about pretty much everything at the moment, just focus on your exams. Everything else can wait.
You will have plenty of time to think about university after your exams.

Personally, I started looking at universities at the start of my ASs. But this was very basic research and was mainly just procrastination when I was supposed to be doing other things. You will find you will spend just a few weeks seriously thinking about university so even if you left it until a few weeks before the UCAS deadline next year, you would be fine (Although I do not recommend this at all)

I would imagine that they prefer non home schooled students. Not only are non home schooled students more likely to have social skills but they are more likely to have had a better education in general due to the various trained teachers and support staff which they have been helped by for years instead of somebody who does not necessarily have the same skills.
However, if the student was able to get the grades required for the course, I would not imagine any university turning them down because of their educational background beyond this.

As they are both seen as being top universities, I would go for the one best for the subject you wish to study as statistics obviously say that this one will be better for YOU.

Your point of Edinburgh being far out is valid. Although it is the least remote university in Scotland, I still feel all of Scotland is isolated and Manchester, being next to many cities such as Liverpool and being much closer, as you said, to London, is an advantage too.

Basically, you need to call UCAS and explain your situation and what you want to do with them.

I recommend you call them twice so you get advice from two different advisers. Sometimes you get given incorrect advice so its better to be safe than sorry.

I dont know for sure but UCAS may say that if you can get 'released' from your course you accepted (make it clear that you dont want your application to be withdrawn altogether) then you may be eligible to apply through Extra.

Dont take my word for it though. Just call UCAS on Monday.

I was in a similar situation and I managed to do...

I was in a similar situation and I managed to do a 'swap'.

You'd be best off emailing or calling the other university that you now want to go to but originally declined. Explain that you believe you've made a mistake and ask them if there would be any chance at all that they would accept you if you got 'released' from the choice you firmed. Keep in mind that they may say no as the course may be full.

Only if they say yes (preferrably confirmation via email) then you'd be in a position to contact the university you firmed to see if they would release you. They may ask for a reason and have the right to decline your request but they will probably comply.

You'd have to inform UCAS about all this and you'd have to get both of the universities to call UCAS for them to be able to switch the university you've firmed.

I've replied on my phone so if anything is unclear feel free to message me abd i'll give you a more detailed response. :)

You'll need to check with UCAS on that one. In principle you ought to be as the offer is an offer regardless of how you got it - but check. This is assuming the offer is conditional. If it's unconditional, you're probably stuck.

Hi, first time here... I really want to study law at Warwick but unsure if I'll be able to make it...

I'm studying law, economics, accounting and business studies at AS level. (Predicted A's in all four)

Would I require four A's to get into Warwick, or would I get away with two A's and two B's? (One of the B's I'll be dropping next year)

At GCSE I had 1 A* 7 A's and 1 B.

I have quite a lot to put on my personal statement; e.g. I created and currently run a website which attains in excess of 150,000 impressions per month. Had work experience with a solicitors firm for a week. In the last year ran a 10K and half marathon, in the process raising money for charity. Also help assist run an app and web design academy for young secondary school students. ETC.

Will I get in or is the competition at Warwick to high?

Their typical offer is AAAc so I would have thought aabb with AAA prediction would be ok

I have updated the information but I can't get out of the loop of pressing continue because there is no submit button.
But on the front page, it says I have submitted 17/5/2013. Does that mean it has submitted even though I have not pressed any submit button but been going round and round in circles pressing 'Continue.'
Do I expect an updated email at some point that says I have my re-vised application done? I'm guessing there's a time lag, because I've not received the email yet.

I'm finiding it difficult to decide which accomodation to apply for a Bristol university and I was wondering if a current student at Bristol or anyone else who jknows what they're talking about might be able to help me decide what is best suited.

I'm a British student. I'm looking for fun, lively and diverse mixed sex halls. I want a hall which will allow me the opportunity to meet lots of other studens and make friends. I would like an ensuite and preferably self catered (although this is less important).

I've been looking through the accomodation listings on the Bristol University website and am quite interested in Durdham hall, Wiinkworth House, Richmond Terrace and University Hall. I've been advised to steer clear of unite housing.

I also want to know how competitive these choices are (if i was applying for an ensuite) generally.
You could try posting in the Bristol forum, as more current students from there might see your thread :D

Well, you are almost there. One more heave. I do think it is the right thing. Courses in run off are generally not happy places. Moreover, although Salford said that they would stand by the course and complete it, there are enough horror stories of students turfed out into the snow from an incomplete course (two year part-time masters course students are particularly prone to this), to not place 100% trust in this.

It's been sorted now. I'm now going to Swansea instead. :)
However, I'll give you the full story anyway......

I couldn't log into my UCAS account last night, it kept saying 'invalid log in details'. However, it was after 6 so I couldn't call UCAS.

The first thing I did when I woke up was check my emails. Inbox: (1). Saw the title, got worried.

The email said that my UCAS application had been withdrawn completely but that I could apply to start in 2014 in September. So obviously I had a heart attack. I called UCAS. At first by the things they were saying it seemed like they were going to say there was nothing they could do, then they finally accepted that I'd actually sorted the situation between the two universities and discovered that the person who called them on behalf of Salford told them the wrong thing. So they told me to call Salford to get them to call UCAS again to rectify the problem which I did.

Luckily, Salford were completely understanding and said they'd call UCAS and get it sorted. They called back within 5 minutes to say that the problem had been rectified and that Swansea had accepted me.

I checked UCAS Track which now lets me log in (it didn't allow me to last night because effectively UCAS thought I'd withdrawn my application altogether because of what Salford wrongly said to them), I even called UCAS up to make sure too.

So yeah, everything's sorted.
Salford were okay about things and other than making that one mistake were helpful.
Likewise, other than one UCAS adviser giving me incorrect advice yesterday I can't fault them either.

Also, I feel really lucky that Swansea were so willing to have me. Out of the universities I declined they were the one I wanted to go to and they were really helpful too.

Surprsingly, no. Once you are doing a PhD, its your personal research that becomes more important, not 'which school' you go to. This is because its more of a personal effort and isnt therefore a reflection of 'teaching'. or 'facilities'.

I work at a Russell Group Uni and we have just recruited several new lecturers from a short-list of recent PhDs from a wide range of Unis (global) that included several ex-Polys and the OU. Clearly this isnt seen as a handicap. Their own research, teaching ability and personality is more important than any 'branding' of a a previous Uni. I have also worked at two leading Unis in Australia - where frankly anyone upright and breathing with a British PhD would have been on a short-list - most overseas Unis really arent very conscious of any of our 'hierarchy' of Unis. Again, having an interesting, ground-breaking PhD with a good record of publication and conference papers is far more important,

Hi,

I don't know how much depth to go in but basically:

*Did terrible during a-levels, really didn't have the correct work ethic to get any decent grades
*If it's relevant, I don't actually know what grades I got for my AS year, I didn't want to find out, but I guess now I might contact my former college and find out so I can enter them in the UCAS(AFAIK you have to enter them)
*Dropped out end of first year, applied for an apprenticeship which said it would do a BTEC in IT(specifically software development) in 12-14 months
*Assumed I wouldn't be eligible to apply for 2013 intake, 'wasn't planning on going to university anyway because my work offers the opportunity to progress onto a work-based degree
*Came to several realisations that lead to me wanting to go to University and study full-time
TL;DR: *The BTEC should be finished in June and sent off, but the modern apprenticeship qualification won't be finished until late September? I don't know if these qualifications are inter-dependent or not. I don't know if you can apply to uni independently without having actually completed the qualification? I don't know if there is a cut-off data for the relevant qualifications being certified?

I really don't know at this point how supportive my work place would be of me wanting to go to University instead of staying on.

There are courses in clearing I would like to do. I'm mainly looking at software engineering or computer science courses. The past 10 months I've been doing software development client work and became really enthusiastic about programming.

Thanks.

I think October is the final date that you will be able to apply for 2013 intake, bear in mind however there will be fewer courses still available at this time.

It sounds like you've chosen an excellent selection of universities for your subject! And yes, definitely worth checking out the course content- when I was deciding between offers, I realised that I wanted a lot of flexibility and breadth in my Master's so it really helped narrow down my choices as some of the courses on offer are surprisingly specific.

I can definitely understand the logic behind the global appeal thing, but my point is that it's not the university which will be prestigious according to a US uni, but rather the department. So, for example, I know of someone from my current undergrad uni who studies for a Master's in Information Security and who went on to do a PhD at MIT; even though my uni is not prestigious at all, the Information Security Group here is well-known around the world and that's what matters. I say this especially because all of the universities you've applied to are probably equally 'prestigious' according to American eyes, but the departments might differ in prestige for whatever reason so that's what matters.

I hope this makes sense! Don't get me wrong, I can understand why you're considering these factors- after all, when paying for a Master's you want to get value for money! But I really think if you want to go for a PhD in the US, it's the department and the course content that matters more than any over-arching university characteristics. For example, if you want to do a PhD in, say, artificial intelligence and machine learning or something, and you've worked with someone who's well-known in that field for your MSc, that will be more appealing to a US uni than the general prestige of your Master's university.

Thanks! Yes that makes a lot of sense and has really helped me.

I think you would have to wait for another year. Since Medicine and dentistry courses are competitive and take longer process for application. Gap year is decent option, gives you the chance to gain some work experience, save some cash, do travelling or chill in between. It also give you more life experience and make your application stand out more.

That's so interesting, it's very different to the education system in Ireland, no such things as Foundation degrees or Access courses. It's so refreshing to hear there are options that help students get into university (in Ireland, if you don't do your Leaving Certificate you're basically a failure and can't go to Uni).

It's funny how sometimes we can go into a course thinking it's what we want to do which then leads us in another direction. I wish you all the best in your foundation year in Physics :)

I am thinking of studying in Wales and have just started to search through universities and degrees to find out what way I'm going to go about this. So far my intention is to study a language (french) and something along side it. It's very daunting searching through Uni's and courses after being out of education for so long now, but I guess there is until September to decide! :)

Well if you don't hold a level three qualification then my suggestion would be to try and obtain one.

Without one you will struggle to get onto a language degree I'm afraid. Most universities will require French taken up to A Level or equivalent.

My advice would be to think about a career and work backwards from that. What do you want to do when you graduate? This will show what you need to obtain along the way.

If you really want to do a Health related job, then drop the silly music degree. Dont waste your time and entitlement to Student Finance completing it. Spend the next year getting relevant health related experience - paid or voluntary work in an Aged Care Home, a Mental Health day centre, Special School etc - then apply for the Health degree (with Foundation year if your admissions qualifications are poor) with a clear idea of this being what you want to do/understanding the realities of the job. If you cant be 'bothered' to do this, then it probably confirms my suspicion that you actually arent interested and just like the drama of 'changing my mind all the time'.

If there is space on the course, you fit the grade requirements and there is enough overlap between your current course and theirs then it is possible they will consider a transfer.

Really the best way to find out is to contact the departments of other universities.

Why does UCAS Extra allow you to change your choice after 21 days if you've received no reply?
Does this mean that after 21 days the university has basically effectively stopped considering you as a viable candidate and essentially you're just waiting for the admissions office to update your application to rejected?

No.

The 21 day rule means that if you do want to, you can bail out and move on. In general I don't recommend that people do this, at least not until they've spoken to the uni in question and asked for an update.

As far as I know you just have to declare your final grade in that qualification. I think you only have to enter the qualification more than once if you have achieved a grade but are intending on re-sitting after the UCAS application is submitted. Unless the uni you have the unconditional offer from specifically mentions anything on resits in the entry requirements, I doubt not declaring them will be an issue. :)

Thank you for answering my question at this abnormal hour. Obviously it's just a worry, in case that is a major fault in my application. All of my grades on UCAS were filled out correctly, and I left no grades out of the equation (unfortunately, not even the E in mathematics AS-Level) Thank you very much :)

Clearing opens in July. However the majority of course are added on results day. If you don't meet your conditions for your firm and insurance places, and they won't accept you with the grades you did get, then you'll go through clearing.

On results day, you'll look on UCAS at their clearing list and see which uni's have the course you're looking for. You then have to phone the university you're interested in telling them your grades etc etc, and they say whether they'll accept you. If they say yes, you apply via UCAS Clearing online. if they say no you then phone another university.

If you don't get into your firm or insurance then UCAS will tell you that you are in clearing. On your online UCAS form they will give you your clearing number.

You then need to look at the vacancies. The official vacancy lists are published on the UCAS website and in The Telegraph newspaper.

Once you have your exam results you need to start contacting universities by phone. You will need to tell them which course you are interested in and if they will consider your application. They will ask you for all of the information they need, including your clearing number.

Some of the universities might give you an informal offer. You need to decide which one to accept.

You then go onto your online UCAS track and click on the 'add clearing choice' button, where you will enter the details of the university and course that you have an informal offer for (you may only add one choice).

If the university accepts you, they will let UCAS know and this acceptance will be displayed on track.

Look at the UCAS website for more information on clearing:
If you get into Imperial, it doesnt matter what your Insurance is does it? So, this is only an issue if that doesnt happen.

If you feel then (ie. August, having missed Imperial) that you have the 'wrong' Insurance and you dont want to go there in October, then you can cancel your application for this year and reapply with a clearer idea of where you really do want to go in the next cycle - and with known A level grades.

Remember you DONT have to go this year - all the Unis will still be there in a year's time. Some time out from all the stress of A levels etc can usually be really helpful in making the right choice.

You can search either on straight degree courses or foundation courses (a pre-degree year for those without high enough qualifications that will give you entry to the full degree the following year) - just select as appropriate on the 'Degree' drop down, enter you preferred subject and Search. On the next page you can enter your grades/points as a filter and see a list of possible courses/Unis.

It might be worth thinking about doing a Foundation course at a 'good' Uni (and therefore preferential progression to their normal degree course) rather than a degree at a 'not so good' Uni?

Stay at the better uni - high unemployment stats for the country is hardly affecting the best universities, it's better to get a job later and pay of the (relatively speaking) only slightly more greater debts...

what's the actual difference anyway?

I'm in Scotland so the money I would have to pay back would be accommodation and other general things (as the education is free) that I might spend a loan on. The uni close to home has better graduate prospects than the far away one.

Now that is an excellent point. The thing is, we are hesitant to contact the uni because we are talking about a small EU country's qualification, which the uni might not fully understand - and it could be to my friend's advantage.

It might happen that once my friend submits her results, she can point out the somewhat ambiguous condition and say, "hi guys, I met your condition. thanks see you in september". She is likely to get the first condition but won't achieve the second condition. It happened before even to me that universities said they require different grades at different times we contacted them probably because they are unsure about this qualification type. I understand that it is the applicant's responsibility to fully understand the conditions and ensure they are clear but couldn't this work to my friends advantage in this case? if she asks them and they say, oh, actually let us correct it and say we require the higher grade, she will never get in...

The problem is if she gets ABB and the uni says "no, you didn't meet the conditions, bye". I see where you're coming from if there's no chance of AAB, then essentially it's the gamble of contacting them for clarification now and hoping they want ABB, or waiting until results day and hoping ABB is fine. That said, if the offer isn't clear or you don't understand it then really you should raise that with the uni as soon as possible. Finding out now that you need AAB wouldn't be great, finding out on results day when you've just got ABB that you needed to get AAB would be worse.
