Which can either end with it all fizzing up loads and squirting everywhere out the plastic bottle, or if it's in a glass, broken glass all over the now very wet floor :p
I work at a bar too. Smashed so many glasses. :$

You can, though not so many do. Prep school is private junior school - most of them now go right down to reception age, but there is very little boarding at that age. I went to a state primary from reception-year 6, then moved to my private secondary from age 11.
There are so many more fights and arguments in the day house at my school and they can go on forever coz people dont live with each other. My year is so close in our boarding house.

You've been lucky then - in our boarding house you could have half of one dorm not speaking to the other half for weeks on end, with the day girls caught up in carrying messages between the two warring sides. By the end of sixth form everyone was very close, but it took a couple of tough years to get there.

I've noticed that obviously in different countries, students are taught the same subjects but in different languages. So in the UK Maths would be taught in English, in China maths is taught in mandarin etc.

But when in an English Maths textbook they write for example:

"The length of the longer side of a triangle is called the Hypotenuse"

Is this not misleading? It is called the "Hypotenuse" in English, this gives the impression that this thing is known to everyone as "Hypotenuse" (regardless of language), so shouldn't they write...

"The length of the longer side of a triangle is called the Hypotenuse in English"

Or do they assume you know that this refers to its English name and are aware that this thing has names in other languages which you are not aware of.

Yes they assume you are aware of the basic conventions of writing.

As we have seen from the 20 other threads you have made on this issue - you are the only one to be confused by this. Since nobody else is misled it would be fair to conclude that it isn't misleading whatsoever.

Why is it when you read something, you have images of the said thing form up in your mind ? Is that the brain understanding what is being read?

People generally take on any new information in relation to the things they already know. This is how we remember things - we form a network of links in the mind thus link any new information to other pieces already stored away.

Thus when we read something, our interpretation and understanding is coloured by our current knowledge and experience. Whether that is in the form of pictures or not, is subject to individual differences.

For example, when I read that something is, say, 100ft tall - I would picture it next to my block of flats and maybe visualise how it would appear from my flat on the fourth floor. It is just one way of contextualizing and therefore interpreting some information.

Hey guys

I just need your advise on this issue please.
I am third year university student and i am currently on my placement, which i am enjoying it very much. The only issue i have at my placement is that we come across different clients and therefore, we need to communicate in a professional manner.

Although I am born and brought up in this uk and English is my mother tongue ( I can also speak two other languages). But I struggle to communicate professionally ay work :-(
The main problem I experience at work is my communication. For example when speaking I use words such as um, a, like, etc.... By using such words, it disturb the flow of a sentence and make it detached..
I also think alot before I say something because i fear id end up saying something that does not make sense.
When speaking, i can't seem to expand my vocabulary and use variety of words that mean the same thing..
however, a major issue I face when communicating with colleagues and clients is, I dont seem to use real words. I use Shun slang and contractions.

I dont know how i can improve this

Please help

I guess there will be some English tourists, so it's possible indeed that you may meet English people. But the probability seems not to be high, but if it's your wish to speak with people in English, then I would recommend you to going to countries instead in which English is the official/native language. How about America or Canada?

It's up to you to be honest, mate. As you...

It's up to you to be honest, mate. As you identified, your options are:

A. Try find any job right now
B. Try obtain more qualifications
C. Go travelling

Presuming you want to achieve ALL 3 of these things at some point in your life, the question then becomes "In which order should you do these?"

In my opinion, the primary driver is money. If you have the money to travel, then you can go, have fun while you're younger, gain some life experience, then come back and get a job/more qualifications. If you don't have money to afford travelling right now, then you will need to work first to raise the funds.

You could always apply for internships to get your foot in the door of companies and then hopefully by the end of it they will keep you on. You say when you come back you won't have much to fall back on, but realistically you'll be no worse off than you are now, except you'll have a sweet tan, some good stories and an alcohol dependency.

Good luck.

It's either 10-3 or 10-4, mon-fri. For 32 weeks of the years.

Another problem my mums just pointed out is that if you do go on JSA they have activities and arrange interviews for you during the day. And you have to sign on during the day. Which he would struggle to do if it wasn't in his holidays. He doesn't want to miss days from drama school though.

With regards to the splitting up of multipacks, does this actually hurt you in any way? It's just one small shopkeeper trying to make a living. Would you prefer that they gave up and claimed benefits instead?

Theoretically Trading Standards would be the agency that deals with this sorry of thing, but
a) there's nothing they can do about selling at a higher prince than that which is printed on the packet - it's an offer to treat / RRP
b) I doubt there's anything illegal about splitting up multipacks, though it may breach their contact with the manufacturer.
c) Trading Standards won't care. They have much bigger fish to fry.

Hi guys,

I came back from University yesterday and I have 4 months until I go back - already I am very bored.

I am going to hopefully start a new job in around a month but I need something to do until then otherwise I will fill my days playing Football Manager and watching porn!

I am going to start going swimming tomorrow and hope to swim a mile by the end of summer but what else to do? I want something to do other than being on my laptop!

Any suggestions....?

Take out a year and work and improve your cv that...

Take out a year and work and improve your cv that way and gain more employment with your freelance photography and your m&s.

Get 'Real World' experience then do the top-up when you feel ready. That way you know what you want to do as a 3rd year project.

Certainly ask for a meeting with your tutor to discuss your work on where you need to improve, if they dont take it further.

Do pass your foundation degree and get the best grade on that, it does look good on the CV as well.

Where do people go after clubbing.

Got my prom coming up and the plan was to go to prom, go out clubbing, and then there was a house party being hosted by a guy in my year. Unfortunately, because someone let slip to his mum, the house parties off. My parents won't be willing to come and collect me at 3 in the morning after clubbing, yet they'd also be annoyed if I walked 5 miles home and snuck in to bed (they'll say "oh you shouldn't have had to walk, you should have called us and we'd have come and picked you up.) No one else is going to offer up their house, and I really don't want to have to stay in the club till six or whenever it closes (theres live music at the prom, so my ears would literally die.) What are my options. What are the pro's and cons of each option.

Why not do something random for prom! At my school, almost no-one went because they had organised it terribly but (somehow?!) well over a hundred people made their way to a field in the middle of nowhere 15 miles away for an all-night rave in these marquee things! :D Moral of the story: Don't go home at 3! :E
Also... you can always "paratroop" ;)

Hi :-)

I would like some help deciding what...

Hi :-)

I would like some help deciding what to do. I have currently paid my first month of rent for university and I am on course to finish paying the second half by June.

I love the freedom that comes with living alone but I'm not good with money and I would hate to starve in my new house because of this very reason over summer.

I also have exams to do in August I'd rather my parents did not know about. In addition to that I'm believe I have work experience lined up this summer (one week so far) and I'm planning on applying for another.

Problem is, I'm planning on getting a second job if I was to stay at uni. Assuming I was to get the second internship I don't know how I would possibly commute :-/ unless my assumed second job gave me a holiday :-/

Hmm! Whereas if I go home I don't pay for rent but I still pay for my uni house, but the noise, fights and spending on housing stuff kills my purse. Plus the integration on how I spend my money would drive me nuts.

What should I do? Because travelling back home to London for my internships would be great!

P.S.: I work weekends at my current job.

It's just a memory thing if you black out certain times after drinking, alcohol is a systematic drug that affects pretty much all parts of the brain especially the hippocampus which is where nearly all memory formation goes on, basically drinking stops the hippocampus processing short term memories and turning them into long term memories. It isn't really linked to how you acted, it might also be possible to remember by certain triggers for instance talking to someone just generally about where you went or possibly revisiting the location. But not remembering doesn't mean you went crazy or anything like that.

How do you do well in multiple choice papers?

Treat it like a normal exam, if there's something you can't do, eliminate the stupid answers and see what's left. Most importantly don't leave anything blank.

My revision usually only starts a week or 2 before an exam and I don't tend to do badly. What you have to do is revise smart, rather than lots. Look at the past papers and think about not only those particular questions but also the style of question and what it's asking you to do. Normally exam questions are written by your lecturers so use your knowledge of them and any work they have set previously to shape how you revise their topics. Also seeing as you've done well on the coursework don't be afraid to use that (and the feedback you got) as a tool to revise with.

I think if you used plastic cups for everything but beer, and gave everyone umbrellas or straws it wouldn't be obvious what they are drinking. Also maybe put the drinks away from the food/ dancing so people don't see what everyone's drinking?

You could have cute lanterns for dim light

maybe talk to the people that bring weed (I usually find that these people don't drink as much anyway) to not let others smoke or something so you don't get loads of people who aren't used to it smoking?

I don't even like vodka jelly ha

random ways to get people involved: that game suck and blow that's from the film Clueless, drinking games, introduce people who have similar interests to each other, put the food/ drink in different places so people can't just stay in the same place all night, you could even do that game where everyone has a sticker on their head and they have to guess what famous person is written there (this is probably best at the beginning), don't put enough chairs for everyone to sit down...

(Wrote loads again! /: )

Posted from TSR Mobile

ok well I will definatly have a padling pool XD I just need rubber ducks now...

oh yeah assign a girl to a guy... that could actually work!

true that, only problem is once people get drunk iti gets obvious who drinks and who doesnt.. but drunk peope aren't very good at noticing things :p

yeah I wll try doing that just crossing fingers there won't be any weed then XD

I don't know that game.. oh well I'll just watch the film i guess D that is afun game!! although some people tend to just write non existing names sometimes which just ruins it but who cares XD

(very helpful long answer though? :p )

I never give money to buskers to me it's a form of begging. There is a woman near my work that comes and plays the violin to a music tape every week, the same 4 songs and I swear I have never wanted to cut a string on an instrument so bad! There is also a little man that plays a flute and actually asks for money when people walk past.

When people do donate they only give like pennies anyway so making back your £50 for the amp might not even happen. Surely there are other ways? To me it completely depends on what the money is for and how you go about it.

Sorry for my harsh views I just don't support busking.

Begging? Begging!!? You are so out of order! Street musicians have been with us for as long as there have been streets! It is not begging! It's working at being a musician it's what we do! Blues musicians as noted as John Lee Hooker, The Reverend Gary Davis, Little Walter, Sonny Terry and on all were street musicians. Same with a lot of Jazz and occasionally classical musicians too, the folk boom of the 60's was founded on street musicians, Donavon, Ralph McTell (Streets of London, dah!) I am a musician of over 30 years I work for a church at weekends, I teach and I play gigs and yes at times I busk! All of these are legitimate ways of earning money from the art that a musician has often poured their life into. Most clubs and bars do not want to pay musicians what they are worth, (it often works out to be less than minimum wage) or nothing "because it's good exposure" (depends what city what club) or they'll pay a DJ. These days most people don't even want to pay for the music they consume at all with illegal downloading all but bankrupting the record industry so before you go looking down your nose at the humble street musician who most likely just trying to pay their bills between gigs, take a look at your itunes and work out how much free music you listen too, even if you don't download have you ever borrowed a CD and copied it?. Some consider that stealing.
so Begging? Sure!

Also they wouldn't have found out until the deposit inspection if it weren't for my ******* of a flatmate so why they make me pay for it now is what I don't get mainly, they won't replace it til they've done the deposit inspections so the money could just come out of my deposit then instead of trying to financially cripple me now.

We have to name objects so it makes it far easier and quicker to refer to them. For example ships. Loads of em about but if you want to talk to someone about a really big one that hit an iceberg you use the word Titanic. Or an even bigger one with guns you use the word Bismark. Using the word Bismark rather than "massive german boat with huge guns that took an armada to sink it" is quicker to say. That is why things have names.

A couple of years ago my neighbours and my family...

A couple of years ago my neighbours and my family had a problem with a gang. Some of the members have previous for theft/vandalism and on several occaissions tried to get into our gardens by climbing over the fence/gate. In which case we sent our dog out who barked at them.

The police suggested that we can put carpet grip on the inside of our fence. BUT it can't be on top. Us and our neighbour on one side have put it at the very top of the garden side of our fence. Although the family on the other side of us has put it on the top.

The police havent said anything to any of us since. Although we don't get police on a random patrol round here very often.

But the other day I was talking to someone and they said that you're not meant to have it up at all, whether it's on top or on the inside. And that if you do have an intruder who climbs over your fence, they can sue you if they hurt their hands on the carpet grip !!!

Who's right?

Has anyone else on here got carpet grip on their fence?

The answer is obviously yes.
It's a very harsh thing to do. Even for a guy to say to a girl since obviously this doesn't just go one way. If the sex was no good, you'll just have to grin and bear it and of course not go there again. If you are in a relationship with the person, then obviously you will wish to adress the issue but in a far more delicate way. Just say what you like and maybe be more subtle about what you don't.

Yes, I'd rather have a gap on my CV. I'd either put it down as unemployment or time spent caring for a family member - because either is preferable to admitting to stripping. Yes, I'm suggesting that people who have stripped will be discriminated against when looking for other employment - and it's entirely legal to do so, just as people discriminate because of academic performance or weight etc. etc.

Of course people strip for money. I just hope that it's a troll thread because I like to think that no one is naive enough to think that stripping will be viewed as just another job.

No, clubs are great fun!

People seem to ridicule the whole idea of clubbing on this site for some absurd reason.. I'll assume it's down to the fact you're all jealous of the people who have a decent social life that involves excitement and meeting new people..?

Clubs are a place to let go and have a bit of banter, and generally just live in the moment. All these people who say if I get [insert grade] then I'll be happy and if I get [insert wage] a month, I'll be happy... these people are never happy!

Live in the moment and love life as it is! It will go by you in a flash so party hard, make loads of friends, and most importantly; be kind to everyone you meet :)

Peace :)

I'm not from the UK but live here now. Which is why I am curious of how you do things here.

I am wondering
- do you usually write to say "thanks" for a nice evening after you've met someone, maybe particularly if it's someone who's invited you to their home?
- do you do so by email/post/facebook message/text?
- if you receive a fb message from someone who visited your place and they're foreign, will you be more "lenient" in terms of mistakes/misinterpretations? (I just sent a thank you message and am now thinking I phrased it weirdly).

- if you received a message which was untraditional in terms of being very friendly or by post (thank you card) rather than an sms, would yo just consider it sweet, or weird?

Your English is fine first off, and I don't think anything of the wording if it's not someone's first language. But from your post I don't think you need to worry about English...

Yes it is polite to thank them, obviously, but is usually said in person at the time. And perhaps the next day or later you could mention it again.

Regarding how you do it... Generally nobody would use post in this situation (or indeed most situations now). I think people might find that a bit unusual. But I'd not find it weird as such, though I'd probably wonder if that was the custom where you were from...

Regarding best way to say thanks, it depends on the person. I personally rank communication in ascending order of significance probably as: Facebook, email, text.

Though I think I'm unusual in preferring email, and I'd suggest people either use text or Facebook. I just don't really like Facebook so prefer email.

But really it depends on the person or situation. Text is, or at least was, a little bit more close than the others as you wouldn't give your number out to anyone, but obviously times are changing and people often put their number into Facebook.

This isn't really that helpful I guess, as the answer is "it depends". I'd avoid post completely though, and suggest most people don't use email as much for talking to friends. But this varies...

Finally, I would think the card is nice... Albeit different... But I wouldn't say it was weird personally.

Hey, i'm getting really fed up with work these days, i'm a casual and they constantly use and abuse me while filling me with false promises,

A few weeks ago i received a phone call from my manager stating that there was a full time job opening and that if i kept my head down it could be mine, the next day i went into work to find out that he already gave the job to someone else (who had an expired license and shouldn't have been there in the first place).

Next thing i find out that he gave the next job to another casual. Bear in mind that these 2 people have far less experience in the job than i have.

I found out today that the reason i never got these jobs was because a co-worker told my manager that the only reason i am there is for the money. I admit, i did say that, i'm still trying to bring my head around why anyone else goes to work? lol :$

There has been a lot of stuff that has been done to me but this is the latest and it's starting to get to me, i'm far better than this job but just never get a break in life!

Any advice would be appreciated, i'm thinking of joining a union.

Well do you have to share with your friends? You can buy smaller bottles of different spirits which are really cheap and then mix them with coke/lemonade whatever :) and tbh they all have the same effect regardless so why waste money as broke students aha :')
Also eat pizza before drinking!! Pizza just lets you get drunk without being sick/getting completely out of it :)

22, Male.

I'm pretty damn sure I smell, but there's no reason why I should as I am very hygienic. The reason I suspect I do is the way people are around me sometimes. I have at least 1 bath a day, often 2 using Cidal antibacterial soap, washing everywhere thoroughly. I wear clean clothes, brush teeth twice a day, wear Sure anti-persprint deodorant (not excessively) etc etc etc.

I've been thinking it for a while, just the ways people seem around me in public, though it's always been speculative - but today I'm pretty certain I did stink - bad. Everyone seemed to be smelling something I wasn't and I hadn't even been sweating really. I overheard people getting on the bus saying to each other it stunk and someone even moved away from me. One fella screwed his face up as he approached me as if he had smelt something bad. I went to the coffee shop and one of the Baristas behind the counter said to the other "What's that smell?" and the other said "I know, don't know where it's coming from" - this was as I was there and given my experience on the bus I'm pretty sure it was me. I just went home even though I had other stuff to do.

I went home and had a really good sniff of all my clothes and body but they smelt absolutely fine to me and there was no dog **** on my shoes either. Even my ****ing arse smelt fine.

Its seriously affecting me, I don't want to go out anywhere and it's reduced my confidence to nothing. I went through this a few years ago and I got severely depressed and started becoming obsessive to the point I actually ripped the carpet up in my bedroom as I was sure that was stinking and making my clothes stink.

I have asked my mother if I smell and she is adamant that I don't, but its a bit pointless because we live in the same house and are probably used to each others smell. Besides if it's our house that stinks (it's quite clean though) then we probably both have the same problem but she says this never happens to her.

What the hell is going on! Please help!

Don't know if I am posting this in the correct section but here it goes anyway;

The course I am about to study at college will result in me staying at college for 2 years, HNC to HND before I can get into university.
If after 1 year I am having second thoughts on what I want to do with my life and decide to leave. Can I use my exam results from this year, (I am currently studying 4 highers; History, Modern Studies, Product Design and Information Systems) to go an and apply for uni to study something unrelated to my HNC or would I have to reapply to college to do a similar course to one i may be interested in? I would be applying for first year entry and I already have the level of Maths and English qualifications needed for entry to most courses that interest me. :)

Thanks for your help , how important is the first year AS? would it be to much with both taken in June, will i of just wasted a year( exam officer - no help)! of study...

need to decide today thanks

We're always told that AS is very important, because it basically forms the basis of your options if you were to apply for uni in Year 13. This is because universities will use your AS grades to determine your eligibility for their courses with regards to entry requirements, your teachers will use them to do your predicted grades which will again affect universities' opinion of you when deciding whether to give you an offer or not and of course, they do form half of your overall A Level grade so you have a firmer foundation on which to base your uni choices on.

However, I guess you at least have some reason for no AS grades, compared to someone who simply did not work and came out with rubbish marks. This can be explained in your reference, although I'm not sure if universities would see it as a valid reason for missing your exams - compared to someone whose parents died the day before the exams, for example. Having said, at least you'll have a great extra curricular to talk about in your PS!

The other user makes a good point about it being risky, especially under the new A Level reforms, so ultimately the decision is up to you and how capable you think you are of managing that sort of workload. (Although, if it helps, AS will probably seem easier after you complete the harder A2 and AS exams generally come earlier than the A2 ones, which might give a bit of time in between for revision.)

It's not that, it's when you are naming a concept you need to define the language you are naming it in.

You can't just say that object over there is called a tree, it's called a tree in english. You need the distinction for other languages.

Why? It goes without saying you are naming the concept in English because the text book is in English. You don't have to keep reminding the reader what language they are reading.
You don't need to be explicit about absolutely everything. The default assumption by the reader will be that any new term introduced is in the same language as the rest of the book.

I don't have a moral issue at all, I'm of the opinion that if you consent then it's consent, even if you're drunk, but unfortunately the law doesn't agree with me and if you're sober it could get you into bother.

No form of physical retaliation will let you off scot-free
if you retaliate to someone it's aggravated assault; it's still assault so you'll be arrested regardless. If he attacks you un-aggravated and you definitely cant escape from him, then use a form of self defence to get away from him, you probably wont get arrested if you use self defence to get away from him.
Honestly I would just call the police, be the smarter man and get it dealt with properly. Just say the guy has been acting violently towards you repeatedly and if he is specifically seeking you out, i believe that is a form of stalking.
Guys like him are worthless just ignore the brat and don't give him what he's looking for...

I am changing flats this summer and I have WAY too much stuff.

I am cleaning out my wardrobe and for the designer items I don't use, I am selling online. However, there are stuff in my flat I don't use, and I don't have the energy/time to sell it all online. I saw this ad on tv for cashconverters.co.uk. I don't care that much if I don't get optimal price for stuff, I just want something back.
They haven't listed on the website what kind of stuff they actually take in, but it says "anything of value". So this far I'm thinking a silver bracelet, a vase from Harrod's, a SLR camera and an old iPod.

Anyone used this sort of thing? There is supposed to be one not too far away so I was thinking of going tomorrow. What were the prices like, of the things you got back? Was it effective?

Well if you're going there tomorrow, you might as well ask them for a rough estimate as to how much you could gain from selling your items. :)

if you don't ask her, then you will never know....

if you don't ask her, then you will never know. Girls don't bite, but yeah... being shy won't help you getting a girl. I've seen guys blushing when talking to girls, getting nervous, feeling tickles in their bellies... that is bad but it's hard to avoid. How can you possibly hit on girls under such conditions?

If I had to give you an advice in one sentence; I would certainly say "Dare to dare".

Shyness is an evolutionary armor that protects us from many of the evils of the world in the early stages of life, and only disappears with habituation. That is, shyness in a wild environment helps keep us alive and is evolutionarily profitable, our ancestors stopped being shy when they were ready. The problem is that in contemporary society, those who are born more shy than the rest do not have the chance to get the experience that made our ancestors stop being shy thousands of years ago.

A few things you can do to improve yourself are for example, control your gait, your expressions and your attitude. Imagine you're an actor and interpret a different character to your real self. Start by making a series of basic exercises, like looking into the eyes of all the people you come across in the street and hold your gaze until it's them who look away, walk tall with your shoulders back. When you're chatting with a group of strangers, if you're really shy, you're going to slip aside, force yourself to put yourself in the center. Exercise all this until you internalize and become part of you, you get it without effort, or with slight to moderate effort. Walking upright, for example, initially will seem difficult, even forced and ridiculous, but eventually what you will end up machining and very natural.

You can also force yourself to simple interactions with strangers. Escape the comfort and sail into the unknown. Go outside and walk in a straight line, pretend you are a tourist, or new to the town, ask all the pretty girls you see about the location of some place that is within 800 meters. Remember, you're not flirting, you're doing an exercise. You have to try to keep yourself as described in the first point while talking to them. Do it as many times as needed, until you master the situation (you will). When you get it you will be one of the best "place questioners" in the world, at first it may seem useless, but this is important to make you realize that you can get used to everything.

If you can get used to ask to strangers what time is it, or ask for directions (very easy), you can end up getting used to more complex things such as flirting.

My last advice is: Memorize witty phrases and interesting stories. Memorizing lines can help you socialize, this does not mean you have to learn jokes, not at all. You can just have a repertoire that will serve you as "cushion of safety" against the dreaded anxiety. Memorize a couple of adventures, the day a drunk weirdo started screaming in the middle of the bus and the driver refused to carry on until he's gone, the day you went with your friends to Rome, your friend sat on the floor and people started dropping coins on him... whatever! When you're starting to flirt and trying to meet girls - especially the first few times - having a story prepared beforehand can be really useful, not because you necessarily have to tell them, but because they give you the peace of mind that you can make use of them at some point if you get blocked. After learning 3 or 4 different ones, it's not that difficult to find an "environmental excuse" to tell any of them.

For example, in some countries you are allowed to smoke inside a pub, and in others you aren't and sometimes the smell of cigarettes conceal more unpleasant smells like body sweat or farts. It's easy to say "Don't you smell a fart?", "Damn, I miss when me and John went to Amsterdam, tobacco can be useful sometimes..." or "Damn this wind is strong, this reminds me of what happened to me last summer in Spain, the sun was ****ing great and I fell asleep. A couple of hours later I woke up in the middle of a sand storm, all the tourists were gone, I thought it was the apocalypse and yadda yadda... "

As you see, it is not difficult to prepare something. The examples may be exaggerated, but it is not complicated to make up some story that can provide you security, and calm that fear of not knowing what to say.

It is in your hands to improve yourself, and remember that nothing is impossible, because you are designed to adapt. ;)
