Hi!

I'm Emily! Last time I was on here I was waiting to get into Bangor to study sport science. Now, I'm graduating. Can't believe it XD

I've applied for the MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology at Liverpool John Moores University. I was just wondering if there is anyone on here who knows anything about the course? knows a past student or current student who'd be able to help me?

I'm looking for:

-How many days/lectures/hours are involved each week. Maybe a copy of this years timetable if there is one?

-Any books lists.

-What are the clinical placements like?

Cheers for any help!! xx

I plan to work with people/possible health science environment, which bio should I go for to give me a one up? I have heard biology is too broad, but I thought it would complement the psychology instead of human biology.

Sheffield, Bristol or York? (undergraduate biology course)

goodness, i made an account just to reply to...

goodness, i made an account just to reply to this. the person from Sheffield who's bashing the other unis is talking silly crap. sorry! Sheffield is anything but safe! even if it was voted safest city, just go to any article online on the matter and scroll down to comments. everybody says it is not so, Sheffield is very unsafe; i hear news about crimes in Sheffield almost every day on the radio and i have so many friends who were attacked there!

i am finishing my degree in York this year and all in all i was very satisfied with the course. the first year is the same for all biologists, regardless of their specialisation (ecology, molecular bio etc.) this is to ensure that all students end up having a solid common background in biology, before specialising.

from year two, you get to choose what modules you wish to have. they cover really well molecular biology and biomedicine, microbiology, immunology, ecology. they also overlap some modules with the biochemistry degree, so you can get a flavour of that if you wish. a personal point of view, they are not very good at neuroscience.

the course has great practicals, you get A LOT of hands-on experience during the degree and the department is recognised for this throughout the UK. also, you can have a year in industry, where you work in a lab in the UK or abroad (3rd year of your course, out of 4); i did this and it was a great experience, your career prospects are much better afterwards.

the city is gorgeous (the city centre is rather small and old-style, so if you come from a big place it might feel weird). the uni is about 20mins of walking from the heart of the centre (5min cycling max). there are many pubs and clubs and nightlife is pretty good. many green areas too.

the weather is much better than i expected, it is often sunny and you get the most amazing sky. does not rain that much and if it does, it does not pour. windy at times.

there are so many student societies it is almost ridiculous :p im sure you would find many opportunities to get involved in uni life and if there isn't a society for your hobby/interest you can easily make on.

all in all, i recommend it. i think out of the three unis it has the best reputation within the UK for bio. i do however wish you good luck and hope you go to Imperial! but if you don't, no stress! it's not the end of the world. i missed my offer for UCL and went to York. now im starting a PhD in Oxford, so i guess it was all for the best. good luck :)

Biochemistry - leads to work for pharmaceuticals...

Biochemistry - leads to work for pharmaceuticals companies, further research etc.
Neuroscience, genetics similarly
Biology, Chemistry.

Any of the above courses require Chemistry, plus a second science (apart from Biology, which may require Biology, funnily enough). Many unis will be impressed by a contrasting 3rd subject. But always check the exact requirements for a particular course/uni, including grades.

We are currently being spoken to about universities and courses and i have no idea what i want to do!
I am interested in both psychology and biology and would love to do a course to do with both. I am thinking about doing a psychology and biology joint honours degree but i'm unsure where it will take me in the future. Anyone who has/is doing a biology and psychology degree, what are you thinking about doing in the future? There is just so much pressure in deciding right now and i just have no idea. I am also looking at physiological science degrees but many need chemistry which i regret not doing!
Anyone else who enjoys biology and/or psychology can you help me think of courses to do?

I am going to start my A2 Level this coming...

I am going to start my A2 Level this coming September but I am still confused about which course should I pick in Uni and who to apply to. For now, I currently finished my AS Level in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Geography and predicted straight As for my results by teachers at school. My first intention was to do Medicine but still double sided mind what course I would like to pick involving Biology, Chemistry and Maths like Biochemistry and Chemical engineering course in Uni. Do you think it is the right choice to choose Medicine or would you recommend any other course in Uni? If so, which prefered Uni should I pick and what work experience should I do?I did do some work experience in Boots, Hospice and YMCA charity shop before this for Medicine. But thought, the course should provide a good future prospect and careers later on in life. Please reply and help me out

Additional Details:

I love Chemistry and Biology as my favourite subjects as for my GCSE I got 7A* & 2A ( only took 9 GCSEs). My teachers, family and friends asked me to continue with Medicine as they think I am a good candidate for Medicine in Uni but I think I am not competitive enough for it but aiming for top Unis like Oxford and Imperial.

Hello, i enjoy biology with a passion so obviously i want to do it as a university degree. I've decided that i want to become a biology teacher and to do that i need to do a 4 year undergraduate course and then a year degree of secondary teaching. Is this a good idea or are there any other ways?

I assume we're talking secondary teaching here?

traditionally, most secondary teachers have done a three-year degree in their subject, followed by a one-year PGCE (post-graduate certificate in education). However, it is becoming more common for graduates to train in schools, rather than at teacher training colleges/unis. The government has several schemes that encourage this, particularly if you have a good degree:

http://www.education.gov.uk/get-into...based-training

You will have noticed that most secondary science teachers teach more than one science subject, especially at KS3, where you usually teach science generally. Even at A Level, you may well be expected to teach two science subjects. So think about whether that's something you'd enjoy.

A biology degree will give you lots of options, but if you do want to go into teaching, try to get as much experience as you can to help you be sure.

The other problem is that, chemistry is the most important subject for this area so they would actually go for ppl with A.
Hi. I've become really indecisive lately. Originally wanted to study medicine but my application/interviews weren't strong enough this year. UEA gave me the option to change subject and I chose MChem.
Now after researching graduate medicine I've realised to increase my options of uni choices I'd be wiser to study biomedicine.

Hey all

Im thinking of applying to Nottingham for natural sciences for 2014 entry- but i cant find any information on GCSE requirements. Ive emailed the department twice and no reply.
Im a bit worried because I got a C in gcse maths, which for some unis isnt good enough.
Im actually retaking aqa unit 3 next week to try and pull it up to a B...but at the rate its going its looking unlikely :(

For any of you who are studying at nottingham now what were your gcse's like?
btw, i want to do the biology, geography, archaeology pathway- and im thinking that because the biological sciences stand alone degree only requires a C then the natural sciences will as well???

thanks :)

I've had a good look at the website too. And I can't find any mention of GCSE requirements either. And they quite easy to find for other subjects. It seems as though they don't stipulate GCSEs. Which seems odd, for sciences. I think you're right to contact Notts direct. Keep trying. You could try different contact points - general enquiries for the uni as well as the department. Or you could call them.

good luck.

Biomedical Science is a well respected degree, and it is an excellent foundation to lead onto other more specialised degrees. For this reason, it is a great choice for someone hoping to apply for graduate entry medicine.

You can still become a biomedical scientist.

When you finish you degree you'll need to contact the IBMS and get your degree looked at. The IBMS will then tell you what "top up" modules you need to take in order to receive the background knowledge required by biomedical scientists.

The next step is to find a job as a trainee biomedical scientist and spend a full calendar year completing the IBMS pre-registration portfolio for the certificate of competence.

Finally, you can send your degree and certificate of competence off to the HCPC who will put you on the register to use the title 'Biomedical Scientist'.
It's a lot of work but if you really want to do it, it'll be worth it!
It has been roughly 2 years since my graduation and it took 3 attempts to get an interview (and an offer). Hope that information is of some help!

I'm currently in year 12 and completed my AS levels and got all A's in my january exams and will hopefully get all A's for AS and want to do a job in finance but do a degree in biochemistry so I was just wondering if that would be possible or if I should take a degree in finance itself. I love Science, though I not extremely technical (I can get my, though I'm not amazing) so Im worried about the Practical side of such a course. Furthermore, what sort of Work Experience would be best? I have been on some Science (and History) workshops, and have a Saturday job at a Pharmacy, but have found It hard to get stuff at Charities main office, shall I just think of Volunteering at Charity shops?
Yes it's certainly doable. but it depends on your work ethic and your base understanding of core concepts of Biology and Maths. You have the entire year to learn, revise and sit only 2 A levels, so that's fine.

Hey guys,

I'm in year 12 and I'm hoping to apply for Biological sciences at a Russell Group Uni at the end of this year. However I have only studied Chemistry to GCSE level (I got an A).
I am set to achieve AAAB in my AS results this summer in Maths, Physics, Biology and Economics.

- None of the universities I want to apply to require chemistry but some prefer it. What does "Prefer Chemistry" actually mean in terms of offers and how much chemistry is on the course?

-If certain universities "prefer" chemistry at A level...does that mean the course is more chemistry heavy than the courses that don't prefer chemistry?

Are you studying for a Biology degree without Chemistry?

Also, if any current students see this thread, would you possibly be able to give me an idea about the books I will need to read as I can't find a reading list anywhere!

Thanks,

Rhiannon.

PS. I don't bite...

Hi,

Iv recently applied for a nursing degree and have accepted offers from my top choices, however...now i want to do biomedical science instead. Im doing the access to biomedical science at the moment and want to carry on doing what im doing now!

The unis iv had offers from do not do the IBMS accredited courses, which means if i do biomedical science, il have to wait until next year and reapply, which is a gamble in case i dont get any offers at all, as its only aston id want to go to! (live nearby).

I know if I carried on doing nursing, chances are i will have a job at the end of it. Are the employment prospects good with a biomedical degree? And does anyone else think it is worth the time and effort to wait another year? I am already 23! lol.

Hi Jam',

I've been thinking of doing the same kind of thing. I am currently in my 3rd (of 4) year of my BSc in (applied) mathematics and have been looking at university websites around the country.

So far I've come across several mathematical biology taught MSc programmes, for example there are two courses at the university of Nottingham: Scientific Computation with Mathematical Medicine and Biology and Mathematical Medicine and Biology.
There's a course at ICL: Quantitative Biology, at Bath: Modern Applications of Mathematics, at Warwick: Mathematical Biology and Biophysical Chemistry, etc.

These courses are all meant for Maths graduates, so you should be able to get in just fine. You could probably find many more like these. Just go to the Mathematics department website and see what postgraduate courses they offer.

Good luck!

I am more inclined to do the one year placement because as you said the 6 week placement I'll end up being gone before I've really started in anything. I'm only starting my degree this September :P but I really want to get this sorted as quickly as possible to make sure I'm not having to be put on a waiting list for places, Chester zoo has a work experience waiting list of a year because it's that popular for people doing animal care or animal behaviour courses. I thought this might be true of more scientific places as well. I was thinking about cancer research but I'm more interested in viral disease like HIV (I may have the silly idea that I might one day cure it :U) but then again I'm also very interested in neurology and genetic disorders.... I just love diseases :P

Oh you haven't even started uni yet! I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. If your uni offers this scheme they will have contacts with places that can offer you a suitable project. These are formal schemes which run every year so the previous year's students will finish and your year's students will start so there's no question of waiting lists. Placements will be advertised like jobs and you will be interviewed and made an offer. In my case as with most formal year away programs the year away counts towards your final degree so your uni has to be involved in arranging the placement. You typically start applying in the summer between your first and second years and are usually placed by the next summer.

Well I can tell you this much that it was quite difficult for me to make the decision to apply for this particular course as the fee is exorbitant and comparatively much higher than the fees of other courses for International students.I had the liberty to pick Pharmacology as I majored in Pharmacy.Yet I picked this course after intensive analysis on the premise of several important categories.

I do not know whether you have read up on this particular subject, but Oxford is leading in the field of Immunology by leaps and bounds before other universities in Europe, including Cambridge. Oxford is the ONLY institution ranked among the major global frontrunners in this field. If you look at the incredible quantity and quality of research being conducted by Oxford in this field, especially Vaccinology, you would be amazed.Yes I definitely agree that an MRes course presents greater advantages in terms of training and thereby facilitates a smooth transition to PhD, but it also hold true that for most,a strong ingraining of essential theoretical knowledge is a must to refine the academic finesse and prepare one (mentally and educationally) towards the tougher academic avenue of PhD.And either way you would be trained during your first year of PhD so you obtain the requisite skills and techniques anyway. I personally do not still know how much a taught course would be credited if you wish to get into the top PhD programs around the world and hence leave that judgement to each person for his/her own.

As far as achieving an offer to this program is concerned, I personally feel it is tougher than to most courses. A friend of mine had applied to two other courses in Oxford and he was accepted to both but was rejected from this course. From a vantage point, I would say that the interview we faced was far tougher. And I agree that its important to be humble and not feign as a pompous know-it-all!

Hope that helps! Best of luck!

Well said, and may I add as well, u can't learn all the techniques in life sciences plus when you move into a new lab u have to learn new ways of doing things eg new software, new kits etc ,even if it's the same technique. So sometimes, ur lab experience may not be relevant as far as phd application goes.

Hi, i'm in the process of looking at courses for university, I need some advice on what the best thing to choose for me would be. I'm doing my AS levels at the moment, will soon be going on to A2. I'll be talking chemistry, biology and maths(sigh), I've always wanted to do zoology because I know i will enjoy it, but I've heard it's difficult to get a job with this degree, I am also interested in biochemistry and microbiology which i would enjoy, but not as much as zoology. Could anyone advise me on which degree has the best prospects, which pays the most, and maybe where to study it?

I would also use this website too:

https://nationalcareersservice.direc...dresearch.aspx

At the bottom of each job profile is 'industry related information', which you may find useful for realising how incredibly small the environmental conservation sector is compared with industry-related bioscience.

Careers which would directly use your Zoology degree include; research/academia, biologist, ecologist and conservation. I initially applied for Zoology myself, but I am now off to study Cellular and Molecular Medicine later this year instead (studies bacteria/viruses/cancer/genetics/stem cells). For the same reasons as you, I was apprehensive about studying Zoology, particularly as I didn't really have a defined career path. I just used to say "oh I just want to study the natural world" "oh I just want to research animals", which is quite vague really. Similarly, I know I would enjoy Zoology more, but I'm going to be in a job far far longer than I am at university - so whilst you must enjoy the subject and be interested, I think you need to think practically also. Seeing as you would enjoy microbiology regardless, if you feel it is the right direction for your career and has better job prospects for you, I'd say it is the better option.

However, please be aware that I based my decision on what I value important in my career. I want to be an expert in a particular field and gain a set of subject-specific skills and knowledge which I can use to further research and the scientific knowledge base. I felt I would achieve this studying CMM than studying Zoology. It was also a case of realising I didn't want to work in conservation as the day-to-day tasks didn't seem for me (although the bigger picture was very appealing). I also felt genetics/stem cells was a very good area to go in to considering its development over the years and the prospects it's bound to offer in the future. Also, it was a case of separating interests from my career (the two overlap I know) but, like, I can continue watching nature documentaries and reading books in my spare time to enlighten me you know? I don't need to go off studying it all for 3 years - my interest and passion for the natural world will remain purely that, whilst I'm going to devote my career to reducing the presence of diseases and things. :)

With either degree you can do anything biology related or unrelated. With a biology degree you'll have a broader range of skills and knowledge but with a an CMM degree these will be narrower and more specialised. Careers in genetics and molecular medicine are better funded compared to conservation/ecology jobs but if you're determined enough you will find jobs.

I would contact the uni to see if it would be possible to switch during or after the first year. If so then start on one course and see how you feel. If not then you will have to make a decision soon.

Good luck!

I have decided to go with CMM - being an expert in some sort of field has always appealed to me, one where I have specific skills and knowledge... I feel CMM will fulfil me more than ecology/conservation jobs will in terms of this desire. As much as I'd love to go to university to learn about the natural world for 3 years, I must think about my career aims. :( Hopefully I will gain all the knowledge that will enlighten me about the world in my own spare time!

Thanks for the help!
