How bizarre! It's not really on if people's documents have been lost, maybe they put the packs together a while ago and forgot to alter it? I sent mine recorded delivered (mostly cause of the faff it was to get certified copies!!) And it was signed for, so like you, I know they received it.
I think it the 6th March that I went on the open day, so maybe not.

Hello, i enjoy biology with a passion so obviously i want to do it as a university degree. I've decided that i want to become a biology teacher and to do that i need to do a 4 year undergraduate course and then a year degree of secondary teaching. Is this a good idea or are there any other ways?

The trouble is the suggestion they give (especially Edinburgh) is always lower than what they actually look for. The other problem is that, chemistry is the most important subject for this area so they would actually go for ppl with A. They also looking for ppl good at math in this area... and to be honest noone will care about the A in English or Business for science... believe me I know what Im saying I was planning to go to Edinburgh for 2 years....

Hi. I've become really indecisive lately. Originally wanted to study medicine but my application/interviews weren't strong enough this year. UEA gave me the option to change subject and I chose MChem.

Now after researching graduate medicine I've realised to increase my options of uni choices I'd be wiser to study biomedicine.

Question is, I recently firmed UEA for chemistry but I was wondering if they would let me change to biomedicine?

Im thinking of applying to Nottingham for natural sciences for 2014 entry- but i cant find any information on GCSE requirements. Ive emailed the department twice and no reply.
Im a bit worried because I got a C in gcse maths, which for some unis isnt good enough.
Im actually retaking aqa unit 3 next week to try and pull it up to a B...but at the rate its going its looking unlikely :(

For any of you who are studying at nottingham now what were your gcse's like?
btw, i want to do the biology, geography, archaeology pathway- and im thinking that because the biological sciences stand alone degree only requires a C then the natural sciences will as well???

You quoted a website saying they require it for medicine, not for biomed.

You can still become a biomedical scientist.

When you finish you degree you'll need to contact the IBMS and get your degree looked at. The IBMS will then tell you what "top up" modules you need to take in order to receive the background knowledge required by biomedical scientists.

The next step is to find a job as a trainee biomedical scientist and spend a full calendar year completing the IBMS pre-registration portfolio for the certificate of competence.

Finally, you can send your degree and certificate of competence off to the HCPC who will put you on the register to use the title 'Biomedical Scientist'.

It's a lot of work but if you really want to do it, it'll be worth it!

Yes it's certainly doable. but it depends on your work ethic and your base understanding of core concepts of Biology and Maths. You have the entire year to learn, revise and sit only 2 A levels, so that's fine.

However, how are you going to do practicals for biology?

How's Biochemistry as an course? I want to do it in the future :). Did you lot have lab sessions?

I am more inclined to do the one year placement because as you said the 6 week placement I'll end up being gone before I've really started in anything. I'm only starting my degree this September :P but I really want to get this sorted as quickly as possible to make sure I'm not having to be put on a waiting list for places, Chester zoo has a work experience waiting list of a year because it's that popular for people doing animal care or animal behaviour courses. I thought this might be true of more scientific places as well. I was thinking about cancer research but I'm more interested in viral disease like HIV (I may have the silly idea that I might one day cure it :U) but then again I'm also very interested in neurology and genetic disorders.... I just love diseases :P

I don't have a chemistry A level and I graduated last year in biomed.

Well I can tell you this much that it was quite difficult for me to make the decision to apply for this particular course as the fee is exorbitant and comparatively much higher than the fees of other courses for International students.I had the liberty to pick Pharmacology as I majored in Pharmacy.Yet I picked this course after intensive analysis on the premise of several important categories.

I do not know whether you have read up on this particular subject, but Oxford is leading in the field of Immunology by leaps and bounds before other universities in Europe,including Cambridge. Oxford is the ONLY institution ranked among the major global frontrunners in this field.If you look at the incredible quantity and quality of research being conducted by Oxford in this field,especially Vaccinology, you would be amazed.Yes I definitely agree that an MRes course presents greater advantages in terms of training and thereby facilitates a smooth transition to PhD, but it also hold true that for most,a strong ingraining of essential theoretical knowledge is a must to refine the academic finesse and prepare one (mentally and educationally) towards the tougher academic avenue of PhD.And either way you would be trained during your first year of PhD so you obtain the requisite skills and techniques anyway. I personally do not still know how much a taught course would be credited if you wish to get into the top PhD programs around the world and hence leave that judgement to each person for his/her own.

As far as achieving an offer to this program is concerned, I personally feel it is tougher than to most courses. A friend of mine had applied to two other courses in Oxford and he was accepted to both but was rejected from this course. From a vantage point, I would say that the interview we faced was far tougher. And I agree that its important to be humble and not feign as a pompous know-it-all!

If you are 100% set on working as a biomedical scientist in the NHS I highly recommend checking out the new Healthcare Scientist degrees. It's all change at the moment with the Department of Health's "Modernising Scientific Careers" strategy.

I'm currently sitting my finals of a 4 year Applied Biomedical Sciences degree and I have been offered a job as a Biomedical Scientist. If you want any information on registration/finding work or the new style of degree please feel free to send me a PM.

With either degree you can do anything biology related or unrelated. With a biology degree you'll have a broader range of skills and knowledge but with a an CMM degree these will be narrower and more specialised. Careers in genetics and molecular medicine are better funded compared to conservation/ecology jobs but if you're determined enough you will find jobs.

I would contact the uni to see if it would be possible to switch during or after the first year. If so then start on one course and see how you feel. If not then you will have to make a decision soon.
