I used a folder to keep all my work organized for...

I used a folder to keep all my work organized for my subjects in AS classes. Within the folder there were separate dividers for each subject and then plastic wallets which I labelled with headings such as "Essays" and so forth.

But I also kept a computer based folder with all the materials that I thought were the most important, either scanned or sent via email to myself, so that if for any reason I lost my folder I would still have all the bare essentials.

You could go back to old school methods and use exercise books for notes in biology, physics and chemistry which you could then type up at a later date, which could also be useful as a revision technique!

However, everybody likes something different, so I would try different methods until you find the one that suits you the most.

Honestly, by the time you get to A-level, GCSE's just don't matter unless you want to go to Oxbridge or do a really competitive course like medicine. You're far better off leaving them and concentrating on AS's. Get good AS results to put on your UCAS form and they will be far more impressive than a couple more A's/A*'s at GCSE.

I know I have definitely missed the B I need in A...

I know I have definitely missed the B I need in A level Maths.
I got a B overall at AS (212ums) and I got a D (51ums) on C3 in Jan.
I resat C3 aswell as sitting C4 and M1.
C3 went really bad, according to the unofficial mark scheme I've probably got an E and I know I definitely haven't got high B's in M1 and C4 to pull the grade up :(
I just got I've got at least a D in C4 and M1 so I can get a C overall.

I'm not sure how chemistry has gone to be honest, I sat F322, F324 and F325.
Got a C overall for AS and previously achieved a D in F322 and an E in F325.
My F322 resit went amazing and I'm hoping for a good A (bringing my AS up to an A overall), F325 went okay and I think I got a mid C on that. F324 went pretty well and I'm hoping for a B/A in that. So depending on how things really went I could get anything from a C to an A.

Biology is the only subject where I'm pretty confident I will get the B I need.
I only sat F214 and it went so well! According to the unofficial markscheme I have between 41-46/60 which is a B/A and I only need a mid D in biology to get a B overall so hopefully I will get at least one of my predicted grades :p

Hello TSR,

As the title of my thread states, I would say that I'm addicted to revision!

I'm currently in Year 11 and I have been revising for about three months for my GCSE Exams in the Summer of 2013.

Every night I usually do between 2 - 4 hours of revision and around 4 - 6 hours of revision on Saturdays and Sundays.

The thing is, I feel like I'm doing something wrong and feel quite guilty when I'm having a break from revision. Sounds weird, I know. For example, if I was to watch TV for 30 mins I would feel bad that I hadn't spent that time revising.

I know this sounds absolutely crazy! I think most people have the opposite problem to me! Most people in my year at school haven't even started revision for their Summer Exams yet!

Does anyone else feel like this too? Don't really know what responses I'll get to this thread, if any!

Have you considered rehab?

Exams start on Tuesday. I've written pages of notes for each subject, but I'm at a loss as to what to do next. Reading through notes isn't very helpful really, I feel as if that should be something I do just before the exam, not now. Does anyone have any other tips for ways of revising? I've googled it, but I'm only really getting recording myself and listening to it, and postcards, both of which I do already. Thanks!

I like to use the syllabus to revise from and use the points on them as questions or alternatively spend time making question cards with answers on the back because you will be revising as you make them and then you can use them again and again to revise from :) good luck! :D

I've got around 120 days for my A Levels. I'm answering a November session from CIE. I'm doing science subjects. I'm rather behind on revision. By when should I finish revising and start doing past papers?
How many past papers should I practice before the exam?

Any tips in general?

Hi, I don't know if this is too late to help you now but I like to revise until I think I know most of the syllabus and then start answering past papers. I think that if you start answering past paper too soon you will just be de-motivated as you may get them wrong. When I have done a past paper I will then go over anything I got wrong and basically keep doing that :) I will do all the past paper there are if I have enough time.
I hope this helps you a bit :D

It's been going on all morning, drilling, banging, sawing!!! Had to put up with this last week and in January too. I don't think my neighbour realises I am on study leave or that I have exams. The noise is so bad that I can't do any revision right now, I ideally need to work in silence or with some soft background noise.

He always used to pop round and warn us when he was going to do some work but that all stopped about a year ago. I have no idea wtf he is doing to his house, this work has been going on for months and months and months.

He is near-deaf so there is no point me going round, he won't have his hearing aid on because he's using loud tools so he won't hear me knock at the door. It's nice that one of us can't hear anything.

I can't go to a library or anything as the local library is almost always shut and I have animals in the house that can't be left alone. :(

80% = A
70% = B
60% = C
50% = D
Etc

And then A* depends on subject from subject but is normally an A grade overall (ie 80% or more) and then 90% or more in A2 units :)

Is this GCSE or A level? You really should have revised! It's not too late if you get straight on with it.

Firstly, be sure to get a good 8-10 hour rest every night. There's no point in revising seriously hard really late at night and not being able to retain the information.

Make sure you go over the main points of each topic. Note the fundamental information that you wouldn't be able to re-call if you haven't revised it e.g. How does Carbon get back into the atmosphere from animals when they die? THE POINT -> They decay and the microorganisms which eat them respire, giving out C02 which returns to the atmosphere.

Once you've done this, then you're able to go into more detail. Please note that you shouldn't go into detail in things that you already know for the sake of it - it only wastes time!

When you've completed your notes, be sure to go over it again. After that, go over it again. Be sure that it's really stuck in your head, don't say "Oh, I've read it and it looks too easy to remember so I'll remember it in the exam" because that is not always the case, trust me. Just repeat it out loud because if you're able to say it several times without looking, there should be no problem of you being able to remember the details whilst you're in the exam.

To get that good grade

Anyway, good luck! :)

Hello!:)Exams and studying can be tough and...

Hello!:)Exams and studying can be tough and overwhelming but it will help if you see it as means,as a way to achieve what you want.If you see it as loads of work and obstacle you will feel more anxious and in agony. You must be tired from studying all year long and maybe you need some time to rest.Do you have someone who understands physics and geography to help you?If not,you could ask whether your classmates have been keeping notes on SOS points and importand facts. It would be helpful if you could write in pieces of paper the highlights of each unit so the revision will be easier and you'll remember more. What about talking about it to your teachers? They want to help students to understand the lesson, not just to learn it by heart. You could make a sample test on your own and after you finish your studying you can answer it to see how it goes.If you have another problem maybe that causes stress to your studying.Maybe this site will help you https://www.google.gr/url?sa=t&rct=j...SapKxzlPa3Kvfg
Almost all students have periods like yours but don't give up now, believe that you are stronger than what puts you down!
Always remember that you are writing for yourself and what is more important is you as a person and not as a student. And i'm sure the ones who love you believe the same.I wish you great great luck!:D:)

For starch, add iodine,
It’ll go blue-black not red or green,
Reducing sugars, add Benedict’s
It’ll change from blue to red-as-bricks.
If Benedicts don’t make those sugars change,
Add HCl and try again!
Cool it and add Na2CO3,
Test it one more time and say what you see.
For proteins, simply add Biurets,
It’ll turn lilcal but don’t forget,
Using ethanol is the lipid test
Cloudy white is right, now rest.

Well done, a c is very good.

I useally go throught the more specific lessons or topics and sum it up in a few bullet points and key words and write them onto sparate flash cards for each lesson. You could do this once a week a review what you learn each term. It makes revising easier nearer to your exam.

Though u are very close to you exam I still recommend trying this because going through all the topics means u know what u need to know and making the cards helps. You could just do it on topics you find difficult.
You might want to take it to school on the day of your exam so if there is anything you worry on you can take a quick peek. It also calms me to know i have it to look at if i need it

Hope that helps

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I wasn't sure quite were else to place it.

I intend to sit the SAT exam because I want to got to University in the States. However, since I've been studying at an English High School, I don't really know anything about preparing for it or anything.

So I was wondering if anyone could help me with figuring out what I need to learn, or maybe where I can gain access to some of the material I need to know.

As a side note, I'm curious about what US universities will look at when I apply. Will they only look at my SAT results, or also my A Level results.

If I do well on the SAT, and get average B/C grades with my A Levels, will they still consider me?

Thank you in advance for you help.

PS - If it helps, I plan on studying Video Game Design at Uni.

For various reasons basically boiling down to a three-month mental health crisis at the start of the year actually screwing up my entire second year because of catching up and recovery, tonight I've got to do a 2,000 word-essay in for tomorrow. Then I need to revise (read:learn) a module in a week for an exam next Thursday.

Yep. 2,000 words isn't actually that much although it does seem daunting and to be honest a module in a week isn't that hard. You just aren't going to have as much free time as you normally do though. Just think, I've written 49 words just from this post.

This may seem hubris, but it really does help:- If you feel confident that you have memorized the relevant knowledge do not stress about going over it again. I know the feeling, but it really isn't worth it - to make you feel better, I did Biology for Edexcel and got an A with this tactic :p

Just relax, be confident in what you have learnt and don't bother going over it all as it really is a waste of time (what's the likelihood you will forget it in one day?) If you feel adamant, skim over the content for half an hour - but even that isn't necessary.

Good luck with it all

I got an E in January but confident I have got a C in the resit, and got a B (min) in my coursework, so I would be happy with a D in the exam (I am looking to drop biology as I am just not suited to it) So it is basically there fore UCAS points in the future :$

Hahaha studying all night is the dumbest thing...

Hahaha studying all night is the dumbest thing people can do unless the exam is the next day. Being tired = things don't go in.

When I go hardcore revision mode, I will wake up at about 1pm, have dinner, start working at about 3pm and work until 4am then go to sleep. During that time, I will have some breaks to refresh (maybe 30 min breaks every 3 hours, with little 10 min breaks in between e.g. everytime I finish a lesson/lecture's worth of work) and have an hour break to eat dinner.

All in all I will still get a good 10 hours+ of revision in, which is more than enough unless you have done no work all year or have left revision until the last minute, as 10 hours usually = 8 lectures/classes/lessons w/e you call them, which if you do this for 2 weeks is more than enough time to cover everything.

I got A*AA at A-level in maths, chemistry and biology respectively and have passed all my university exams so far so I know this works. At A-level (which I assume you're doing) try to start revising 1 month before your exams. Revise for 3ish weeks then spend the last week-week and a half doing past papers. This is what myself and the other people who got straight As and A*s did. You won't be able to revise 10 hours per day for a month though as you will probably be at college until about 2 weeks before the exams I assume - just revise for 4-5 hours each day, and then do the 10 hour thing for the week or 2 you have off. :) Also plan to have a cheeky 2 days off in there somewhere, lol. 1 day to catch up on your revision plan if some things taking longer than anticipated, and 1 day just to chill/use as an emergency overflow day if the other planned day off wasn't enough to catch up.

Good luck man you can do it! Fact you're worrying shows you care and suggests to me you will get those grades. :p

OK, breathe! A week is plenty of time, honestly.

This is what I would personally do - it's how I revise at uni for things I really struggle with (I also used some of these at GCSE and A-Level).

- Firstly, take your specification and use it to make a checklist. Divide it up into topics and their sub-topics. Work out roughly how much work you need to do each day (I generally aim for 3-4 hours in the morning and 3-4 hours in the afternoon for uni work, at A-Level this was much less, maybe 2-3 in morning, 2-3 in afternoon)

- Take notes under each sub-heading, using your class notes and book. Make them clear, colourful and use bullet points and mind-maps so that you don't have a page of boring writing.

- Use these notes to make posters (condense the information further, make shorter notes to help you remember the longer version). Again, I can't emphasise it enough: make it colourful and clear.

- Then, make flashcards. This time, use your posters to take notes, and condense the information even further. What you write should act as a "trigger" for the rest of the information. You could write key words on one side, with the definition on the other side, or a date with the relevant info on the back. These work best if you use them to test yourself with friends. Grab yourself some comfy space somewhere, buy some nice food and spend a few hours talking every thing through and helping each other out.

- PAST PAPERS. This is probably the most important bit. Find every single past paper available to you and use your notes to do loads of mock answers. Ask your teacher for a list of possible essay questions that haven't been in past papers. Write short essay plans for each possible essay question. That way, you have an idea of the structure to use when you see the question - saves time.

On the exam board website, there's usually past papers, specifications, marking schemes and essays with invigilator comments. READ the invigilator comments and marking schemes! They will be a massive help in knowing what it is expected of you so that you can plan your answers to be as effective as possible.

- There are two ways of revising and you should use a combination of both: (1) on your own, (2) with others. When you're revising on your own, take all your work to a QUIET, calm place. If you're at uni or school, go to the library (ideally the "silent area/floor"). Bring a couple of snacks (fruit!), a drink (Lucozade / water), and just power through for a few hours at a time. Take a few breaks if needed of about 10 mins. You'd be surprised how long you can work if you remove yourself from distractions like people, pets, noise, T.V., music, etc.

When you're revising with others, make a list of things to get through because otherwise, I can guarantee you will end up chatting and being unproductive. Also take food, find a comfy space, etc etc. If your friends aren't available, get your siblings / parents to test you.

- Record yourself talking through the important points that you have revised throughout the day (you could record a mock answer, notes on a topic, whatever) and listen to it as you're going to sleep. Yes, it sounds silly, but it is a huge help and I think makes your brain process / remember it far more effectively.

That is all I can think of for now. Don't forget to reward yourself and let yourself have regular breaks. Above all, don't panic and just read through everything thoroughly and repeatedly. Once you have written something, don't just cast it aside or file it away and say to yourself "OK, that's done, next topic...". Read it over when you're done writing. Highlight it. Read it over again. Keep it in a special file of revision notes and go over them repeatedly - especially each morning to help yourself re-cap.

I hope this helps - I know my technique is a little long-winded, but trust me - it works. And it doesn't take as long as you'd think (honestly!).

GOOD LUCK!

:)

So it's half term, I've had 5 out of my 8 AS...

So it's half term, I've had 5 out of my 8 AS Level exams so far. Next week I have OCR Computing F451 on Monday, and OCR Computing F452 and OCR Mechanics 1 (4728), both on Thursday. All the exams I've had so far went well, I'm happy with what was asked, etc.

However, it's half term now and I just can't seem to get my mind set on revising for my upcoming exams. These 3 exams I've got next week are for me, my hardest exams, and whenever I start doing a past paper for any of them, I get stressed out, not being able to get any help as it's half term. I've made spider diagrams, record cards, simple notes, examples, you name it, but none of it is going in my head and it's all just messing things up.

I don't know whether I should carry on like this but keep getting stressy, or do something else, like hope for the best with little revision. However, if I do little revision, I'll regret it if I don't do well.

Thanks

I am an electrical engineering student. My university is not that great and the EE program is not that great either, I don't even like the subject. :S. I just took the best opportunity I got in my country.. Anyways, I wish to pursue higher studies abroad after graduation and I will definitely change my subject, and for that I want to be skilled at Mathematics, Physics and programming... I love Mathematics and Physics, and I hope to pursue something with a mixture of these in the future.. For that and for GRE subject tests of Mathematics and Physcis, I want to self study these subjects to an intermediate to advanced level, I have all the resources, books, lectures, etc, but since my university follows a continuous assessment scheme, there is always quizes, exams, homeworks, assignments etc. :@ I cant seem to find time to fit the extra study along with my university course...

Please share time management tips, would be really greatful .... :)

I used to use revision timetables all the time at GCSE, they'd work and I got the grades I aimed for but I always remember thinking things like 'why am I sat here revising physics which I'm confident with when I'm so behind in biology' or something. Now, I like to just use to do lists, some days I'll end up spending like 3 days on biology, and one on chemistry or others 2 days on chemistry and 3 days on some other subject. I just mentally decide which subjects I'm weak on, and what things I need to do to improve that using a to do list. I've stopped watching how 'long' I revise now too, and base how productive my revision sessions are depending on how many things I can get ticked off.

Ive been covering a module a day and hoping to go through past papers the dy before and on the day. It's actually been going pretty well, which I'm happy about since I'm aiming for around 90% in each of them.

I have 1 in each subject, so 10. They will be GCSE papers so thats why I'm a bit worried - they'll be really hard!

Oh wow, they've really changed things up then! I only had two maths exams when I was in year 10.

I agree with what some people are saying. You don't need a timetable, it will waste your time. When you wake up in the morning, or even the night before, make a list of all the tasks you want to complete for the day ahead. When you get bored, take a break. When you feel sleepy, go to bed.

I used to cycle between 2-4 GCSE a day, but I'd make sure that the subjects I chose to study on the same day were somewhat related. So I'd group the sciences/maths together, essay-writing subjects (eng lit, eng lang, history, religious studies) and then the odd-balls like D.T I'd just throw into my schedule when I felt like revising for it. That way, even when lets say you stop revising for english literature, you're still building your skills when you switch to history.

We used to do a lot of exam practice in class, so I never felt the need to do any past papers except for maths and english literature. So its all about knowing where your strengths and weaknesses lie, and focusing on those when you revise.

In terms of revision technique, I don't think anything beats the cover, write and check method :p but people revise in different ways, so if you don't think it helps, dont do it. Good luck!

Your coursework mark seems really unfair, when you got an A last year! Obviously you're capable, I mean.

I'm sitting the A2 exam too and really hoping for an A! I really doubt I will get an A*, although it would be fabulous.

I think to get full marks you have to have a really good writing style - the mark schemes go on and on about eloquence and confidence of writing - and a real depth of analysis in your answer. Refer to your widing reading - compare and contrast it - but spend the majority of your answer refering to the actual texts given you.

Hope this helps :)

Hi

My exams generally went pretty well. Having...

Hi

My exams generally went pretty well. Having slipped into old lazy habits for much of the year I managed to put some hard work in at the end and now feel pretty confident about my RS and English Lit exam performance. Sadly Economics didn't go very well and so I am planning to drop it. This leaves Maths.

For Maths I screwed up the C1 and by that I mean I probably got about 55/75 but I redeemed myself with S1 where I feel like i got a high mark in the mid60's.

I had those two modules and the rest of my aforementioned exams in the first week which meant that I had 6 whole days to prepare for my C2. Stupidly I got cocky. I was really pleased with how I fared in the English and RS Exams and as I had done well in the S1 I felt that all I had to do was to get a really good mark in the C2 and I would be sorted. I could drop Econ and happily take the other 3 and aim for AAA minimum at A2, with hopefully a * in english/rs. I was really pleased and having had 7 exams in the space of 4 days with a lot of working, and little sleep due to my last-minute nature the prospect of having 6 days to do one module where I could catch up on sleep was appealing.

Annoyingly I lost motivation. I wasn't working hard but that wasn't the issue. I wasn't working smart enough. I was using methods which I now regret because they didn't suit me. I figured out how awesome exam solutions the day before my exam and I regret that I didn't use that for those 6 days as opposed to using my textbook which took me way longer to understand concepts that the examsolutions internet tutorials did in such shorter time. With lost motivation I relaxed too much and procrastinated all until Thursday just gone - a day before my exam. On that day I did a lot of work but my overly laid back, procrastinating and last minute nature - where I'm only properly motivated when I'm against the time- caused me to work until 5 am on the day of my exam.

Then for my C2 I did poorly considering how much time i had to prepare for it, and I feel like I may have at best got 50/75 which would set me up for a very low B in maths as it stands. Personally I kinda hate myself now. I had all this time to completely smash C2 and get an A in maths but now I face the prospects of retaking C1 and C2. I'm curious to how this looks. I never considered the prospect of retaking - I always have this belief that I'll get it right when it comes down to it but now it's something I feel I must do. How bad does retaking look? how difficult is it considering I'll need to retake in May/June 2014 with all my other A2 exams I think, as I don't believe my school allows Jan retakes any longer for some reason. How many retakes is it that looks bad, as I heard the odd retake is okay and I'm planning on retaking 2 modules.

I feel so stupid. Why did I put my foot of the gas and relax when if I just kept on working at it I wouldn;t have to be in a position of retaking. Why did I have to leave it to the last minute, why did I underestimate the work I had to do. All the work beforehand and I went and bottled it when I just had to work at it a bit longer. I felt motivated before as I felt with a bit of luck with a few nice questions here and there in my exams that I had done really well overall bar econ which I'm gonna drop anyway. I felt like I had really turned a corner, and was motivated to get my life together completely, I was gonna ace my exams, go to the gym all summer, get into shape, have great summer experiences with my mates, and all summer was going to be fun. Now I find it hard to enjoy myself. My laziness in not working hard/smart enough for my C2 haunts me. The thought that I could have done better and made things easy for myself nags at me. The only way I can really soothe that disappointment is if I know retaking won't look/be costly for me when it comes to uni applications. If so I'm super motivated to atone for my errors. Also as I asked before probably does retaking as modules make the A2 year that much more difficult?

Personally my parents have been great with me and have said all the right stuff - everyone makes mistakes, learning curve etc. And if retaking two modules won't be too costly for me provided I do the work to improve my scores in both, I'll feel much better. Currently my inactivity over that 6 day period grinds with me so badly it makes me feel like such a f***ing failure. I failed to meet my goals.

Any advice would be much appreciated, and I apologise if I am acting melodramatically.

Yeah, it does. So, how would this affect my application to the universities? I still have a B, wheras they are asking for an A. The other thing I could do is somehow apply for a c4 resit, which has a ridiculous fee for late entries.

I'd speak to the uni. Maybe your target grade might affect it?? If ends all I'd do the C4 resit, if it gets you a uni place then it's worth any fee of money!

Yes i've been noticing this in maths and definitely in chemistry, questions seem to more geared towards testing understanding of topics as opposed to being similar to past questions

I suppose its because if papers stayed similar every year then people would just be able to learn mark schemes so the examiners are having to write harder papers every year :p

I don't tend to go around a specific time frame....

I don't tend to go around a specific time frame. I work until I finish a goal, like notes for a certain section or until I feel like I really need a break. I do take plenty of time to relax though as if not I get too panicked and stressed because nothing seems to be going in.

On a school day, I'd go to the library after school until 5pm and then go home, eat and have around an hour 1/2 break. This is because if I go home straight after school you have the relax, achieve nothing for a while, well in my case anyway. But if I stay at school, I stay in work mode. But then I don't tend to give myself evenings to relax too much, I usually stop working at 10.30-11pm (I'm doing A-levels, so don't panic if you're doing GCSE's) and by that point i'm usually exhausted. I do sometimes watch films though.

But yeah in the day, set an alarm for 8.30/9, work with frequent breaks when I feel it necessary and don't overdo it! Try and make sure you distribute even time for exams too

Try to learn 5 different topics a day for each...

Try to learn 5 different topics a day for each subject, ensuring you remember them all. If you have the confidence in yourself that you'll remember, you're more likely to remember it and thus not have to repeatedly go over it. Once you learn those questions, do 3 past papers on them. After that, move onto the remaining topics and keep going over them. That should take you about two days to learn a complete module. Revise the modules of the exams that are soonest (still keeping in mind your other exams are relatively soon) and revisit the soonest exams the day or two before they start (preferably two days so that you can ensure you learn all the topics that you may keep forgetting). That's what I do when I leave it too late anyway. xD

Taking A2 levels BIO, Sociology and Psychology,

Exams are 10th June -> 17th

Also taking 2 resits in Psy and Bio.

What would be the best suggestion for revising as i have left it a little bit late :(

Just go all out for past papers on everything? or just resits?

I have a bit to learn for the final module papers so best to do the notes or just do all the past papers?

Kinda panicing abit so just want the best method ( I know different methods work best for different people - Im ok with cramming as usually works for me)

Thanks

For sociology I find it better to plan potential essays for every topic as revision rather than doing essays because the marks schemes are too vague to mark work by yourself ao i personally find it pointless and really time consuming. Perhaps look through past questions or the example questions in the textbook to plan essays? It's quite an efficient way I find to go over the content :)

most exams i have are writing essays so i feel your pain!

usually for essays i go right into it (when i see the question i just want to write as much as i can incase the information dissappears)

when my hand starts to ache, i stop and read through what ive written, do the clench-unclench hand technique, and then start writing again.

sometimes the hand hurting is because of stress and you are holding the pen too hard (i do this, making nice indents in the page!). again, stop, breathe, maybe clench the other hand so your writing hand is freer :)
