Hello everyone, I was hoping for some advice. I have been offered a place studying nursing 2013 but I fear I'm not smart enough :(
In my heart I know I can be an excellent nurse, I really care for others & their well being and feel honoured to do so but science has never been a strong point for me even GCSE level science I find tough. Do you think I'm kidding myself trying to get a BSc (hons) ??
I am very prepared to put 100% into studying & course work etc but what if it's just not good enough? :(

Hey owl ruby:) I'm in the same boat I'm not the smartest person either but if you have the determination to do the course and put your heart into in you should be fine. We will get a lot of help from tutors and other students when we need help. I wouldn't worry because you've been offered a place due to having good grades and your working hard so there should be no problem doing the degree. It will be hard but you'll get through it. I find science hard as well it took me three times and three years to get a c in gcse science lol.

I hope this helps:)

volume x 20 (or 15 for blood)...

volume x 20 (or 15 for blood)
---------------------------------------- = dpm
time x 60

So I, personally break down, and do the top like and the bottom line's multiplication then divide those answers. So it could be 1500x20=30000 then 6x60=360. Then 30000/360=83.3 which we round down to 83dpm. It's fairly simple when you get your head 'round it. Got to remember it goes down to 15 if it's blood though.

I find the placements so hard though. I don't know what's wrong with me. I should be ok with them by now but for some reason I just hate going on them. I know I lack confidence i just have no idea how to get this confident that they all say I need to get. I just get really nervous on placement and I have no idea what I'm doing. I enjoyed my theatre placement though and working in recovary. So if I do finish this that's what I would go into. But placements are just really hard for me. Maybe it's because I lack knowledge or I'm not putting in as much effort because of not being sure if I want to carry on with this. It's easy for people to say just grin and bear it but I just really struggle in placements.

Thanks. I am now not sure what to do really, my course begins next March and is 30 miles each way to the Uni and back home so it would 60 miles a day and probably 240 miles a week, that's 1000 miles a month.

Because my course is a nursing course I will need a car to get to placements etc, but if I chose to live in student accommodation close to the Uni I would still have to pay extra living costs as well as the car, but obviously less mileage than if I stay at home.

Overall I think living at home is the more cost effective option but not sure I want to be driving 60 miles per day as I think driving is stressful

I would say do anything you can. With a nursery it shows you 'healthy' kids and 'normal' development and how play is incredible important for development. Hospitals are always going to look good on an application and give you a really good insight. Also good are hospices, respite units, school clubs, summer clubs for children with ld and many more. Good luck :)

Hello!

Hello!

Im a qualified childrens nurse working on a paeds oncology/ haematology ward. Ive always wanted to be a school nurse, specifically special school nurse. I've applied to Leeds met uni for both the MSc and the PGdip.

Can anyone advise me as to which to go for? The MSc is 2 years, the PGdip 1 year. Is there more employability difference?

Also, Ive been having a look at the jobs advertised and most say term time only...do most school nurses have a second job ward based to cover these times? Or is the salary divided so you still get paid during breaks....

Sorry if these questions sound daft.

Any help or advice would be really appreciated

depends where your working, my mum works ridiculous hours and takes care for way too many patients then the average nurse simply because where she was working is poorly run despite it being NHS - but to be honest shes someone who can take any pressure despite the long 12/13 hours shifts every day, she gets a good pay and didnt have to pay for her degree so it really depends on you....
From seeing her doing it, I personally wouldnt, as she had not many other choices but if your young you do

I agree - don't try and use your own family as experience, other than to show you are good at time management! Try and get some voluntary/work experience, or a bank HCA job. To get a place in midwifery, you really do need to show you are dedicated - try studentmidwife.net for fantastic advice - I credit that site with helping me get my midwifery offer!

There is loads of opportunities for experience out there, it doesn't have to be maternity related. I am qualified as a personal trainer and was even able to refer to the skills in that as they are transferable to midwifery!

Definitely, the most important thing is to read lots on midwifery, you need to clearly demonstrate a wide range of knowledge that you know what you are letting yourself in for!

Good luck x

I think this sounds like a good plan. It will give you time to prepare for your application. Midwifery is extremely hard to get into - you will need to spend time reading about the role of the midwife. Your experience so far sounds great, as is your academic achievements - therefore with a bit of reading you should be in with a great chance of getting in. Good luck x

Have you guys all got an offer at this stage? sorry to jump in on your chat, I have an interview on Tuesday next week and I have been out of school for 15 years and never really used my basic maths skills since. I am a wee bit worried about it. I have applied to the Hamilton campus for Nursing and I am dead keen to get started this year, However I have a back up plan of collage if all else fails. One thing I'm rubbish at and need to work on is long division, i'm assuming this will be expected of me for my numeracy test. Do I need just a normal calculator?

Maybe just stick it out; the great thing about nursing is there are so many directions you can take it in. In a hospital, in the community etc but you could also go into health promotion, research, management, teaching.. Don't feel like you have to be a staff nurse on the ward, because once you've qualified you can use your knowledge and experience to guide you with what you want to do :)

I have the opportunity to go abroad next year at the end of my second year of adult nursing. Reckon I will go on erasmus as no way I could afford outwith Europe!! So far, I have wittled the list down to: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Malta, Turkey, Denmark, France and Italy... so any help I can get making this a top 3 would be much appreciated!!! If anyone has been to any of these countries any info would be great (what life is like, which city to go to etc)

I think it went quite well!

I think I did...

I think it went quite well!

I think I did really well on the literacy test. I think the numeracy test perhaps let me down a bit, there were long divisions on there, and equations of decimals and fractions! It must be almost 20 years since I last did those and I can't even remember how to begin! It was a shame that I ran out of time toward the end and had to rush the last few questions, which were not only the more relevant questions (about dosages and such) but ones that I could do!

The group test was a little tricky, I don't think anyone in my group did particularly spectacularly tbh!

The individual interview I like to think I clawed back what I may have lacked on the numeracy test or not shone as much in the group work... I am proud of how I did at one-to-one even though my nerves got in the way a little bit, not enough to be a problem I don't think, I think I might have impressed her!

Find out in 2 to 3 weeks :)

You could try the hospital in Bangor? Not sure...

You could try the hospital in Bangor? Not sure they would give you time on a neonatal unit but anything will be useful. The nursing department could probably give you a specific contact to get in touch with.

Experience in a nursery or primary school would look good on a children's nursing application too as its a pretty competitive course to get onto if you do decide to go for it.

As for needles, you might find that you're fine giving other people the injections!! I'm the other way round, fine with needles myself but I don't like using them on patients (to do the 'tattoos') lol.
it is possible that it is difficult to get rid of a caution and you need specialist advice on this

Hi everyone!

I am in the very lucky position of having been offered a place to study post grad adult nursing at both KCL and South bank University. But I am terrible at decisions!
Family and friends I have spoken to seem to say go for Kings as it is more prestigious and has a better employment rate, but they haven't actually looked at any statistics. The reason I am wavering is because of the research element of the Kings course (and also because I will have to start again and fill in the APL form from scratch for Kings, I have only just finished the South Bank one, eurgh!)
Does anyone have any good reasons why I should choose either? I have spoken to a few people who did the course at Kings but have not been able to find anyone who knows anything about South bank.
They both seemed really nice when i went for interview.
HELP! I need to make my decision asap!

I was in the same position for undergrad child nursing and went for south bank.

Have you asked to visit both?

Try the uni stats website which gives info from students on both courses :)

I can't really give you my reasons for my decision as mine are very child related :)

Hi,
I was just wondering what/how much work experience people usually have when they apply for nursing? I currently 2 hours a week volunteering at the hospital on an adult ward, as well as 2 hours a week volunteering at a nursing home for the elderly. I want to do child nursing though so would I be at a disadvantage as I don't have any work experience with children? What relevant work experience could you get with children? (hospital wont let me volunteer on a children's ward as I'm under 18 myself)

Thanks :) x

Hi
I have 3 offers for Children's Nursing at uni and didn't have that much experience as I only turned 18 recently. I spent 1 afternoon a week for 12 weeks volunteering at a special needs school, did 4 days volunteering at a primary school and mentored year 7s at my school once a fortnight for 2 terms. I'm sure volunteering at a hospital will look good.

Oh brilliant thanks for that, it's a shame there aren't any in the West Midlands as that would just be perfect!

Yeah iv seen that there are places at the university of Birmingham on my Ucas extra, and I think I am going to apply there!
Whenever I look on extra for Wolverhampton uni it says there aren't any places? And also on their website it says closed for applications?
If I'm honest Wolverhampton would be my preferred choice as its a lot closer and placements would be to.
Thanks

well if you want to be closer depends alot i went to a uni far away and now i dont see my mates anymore if your bf is serious about being with you then either make the decision not to see eahc other if you can handle it. if not try your best accomidation is hard i had to do it private for few months and it was loads you need something like 65 ppound a week other then that if its not in halls it might be more im sure there is loads of places doing student deals. but its your choice do you want to be close to him or not but anyway manchester is a good uni. hmmm hard choice anyway grats. again im def having to wait till clearing tell me who you choose and how you get on see you got wait till fakin august jeese lol,

Ooo, have you been to uni before?

Ahh I don't know, I can't decide lol. Since I've been at uni some friends have drifted off but the close few have stuck by me so I imagine that'll prevail if I went to Manchester :) The main person I'd miss is my mum I think!
Me and my bf see each other quite a bit considering we live in different cities, but will see him less if I go to Nottingham as nursing will be a more demanding course. So I dunno. Things always have a way of working out anyway :)
One minute I've decided on Nottingham, the next Manchester and then I switch again. I do prefer the course layout at Manchester (except for their emphasis on research) hmm... Just can't decide!

Aww bless you :( you'll get somewhere! Just ring around the minute clearing opens. I'm pretty sure Wolverhampton will be in clearing, probably Birmingham as well. BCU maybe not. Long wait hey. Xx

I'm starting a nursing course in September and have found loads of websites offering different sets, e.g. tourniquets, steths and sphygs. Do you need to buy these or do you get given them by the university. Its a question I never thought to ask!!

The vast majority of clinical equipment should be available on the wards. You won't need a torniquet at all, it's unlikely you will be taught venepuncture and cannulation as a student and a lot of places have banned fabric ones now anyway. Stethoscopes should be available on the ward for you should you need one for manual BP or listening to chests. Some people buy the steth/sphyg sets to practice manual BP on their friends/family/pets. It's up to you if you want to get these or not.

My advice would be to get black and red biros (lots of them as they tend to grow legs quite easily), a pair of scissors, a little notepad and a nursing dictionary. Use the little notepad to write down things you dont understand or need to read up on, and the dictionary to decypher medical terminology at first as it is like learning another language. You will find as you go on as to whether you need any extras.

Hello, I've applied for Midwifery this year and there's a few things that you should take into consideration before you apply. Firstly, I would not recommend just applying to one university. Most people apply to 5 universities and still manage to only get 1 offer and many don't even get offered a place first time. Staffordshire in particular has an extremely small cohort of 17 this year, making it extremely difficult to get a place with so many applicants. The general ratio is about 30 applicants to 1 place. This means that not only do you have to get at least the minimum entry req. you will also need an original and very good personal statement as well as relevant work experience. This is just so you can get selected for interview. To pass the interview you will need to know a lot about current midwifery news, NHS policies and reforms, ethical considerations and show a real passion for the career. Hope that helps, good luck :)

I've had an interview at Keele, it didn't go too...

I've had an interview at Keele, it didn't go too well unfortunately :( That was down to me being far too tense (It was my first ever interview). Don't make the same mistake I did and go in like a jibbering nervous wreck and you'll be fine! :)

I can give you some examples of the questions they asked me if that helps:
1) Why do want to be a nurse? Why adult branch?
2) What is the role of an adult nurse? (In my interview they wanted specifics)
3) What would you do if a patient refused treatment?
4) How have your previous studies prepared you for nursing?
5) What would you do if you saw a colleague behaving inappropriately?
6) What does the word 'professionalism' mean to you? (This one totally threw me off guard!)

The interview just involves you sitting in a room being interviewed by the nursing lecturers. In my experience they were quite nice, but I found one of them to be quite condescending and I felt like they weren't really interested in what I was saying. Don't let it get to you if this happens though, just remember that they see hundreds of applicants and it's likely they might get a bit bored after a while. My biggest piece of advice would be to prepare some answers to possible questions but DON'T learn a script word for word. They can tell when you're just saying something you've learnt off by heart and it doesn't give off the greatest impression. Also make sure you stay calm and collected and everything should go well.

Hope this helps a bit, Best of luck with your interview. :)

Hello I'm just looking for some advice really ! I've applied to do adult nursing and I should be starting in April and I have been successful in being offered a place with the university knowing I have a reprimand on my crb. I'm really scared that they are going to turn around and decide they don't want me when I fill in the crb form surely if they were going to do this they wouldn't have accepted me in the first place or would they ?
If anyone has got any advice on this I would be sincerely grateful x

the good news is that the government's announced last month they plan to change the law so that reprimands on all but the most serious offences will be filtered out after two years – unfortunately the law has not yet been changed
it is possible to apply to remove reprimands although tricky-if you cannot wait for the law to change please seek advice on your prospects of applying to clearithis off
best of luck

Hi, i'm also due to start an access course in september!
You are best contacting your local hospitals and asking about possibly volunteering there, not all hospitals will let volunteers onto maternity units but volunteering in any area of the hospital is just as good! (i'm due to start volunteering in A&E)
also contact local surestart/childrens centres and see if they will take any volunteers.
http://www.do-it.org.uk/ - have a look on this website too!
anything with working with women is also good! but any volunteering is useful because its all about transferable skills!!

Hiya, I already had my interview and recieved a place as well. The interview was very straight forward. MAybe ten minutes or so and mine related strongly to my presentation. It was only in front of one person. I didn't get asked standard questions like what are your transferable skills/what do you know about the uni e.t.c Instead i was asked how i would maintain a patients dignity and how i would deal with an aggressive patient. Be aware they might ask you these questions but I think if you really want to go into nursing you'll know how to answer these already!!
Its honestly nothing to worry about. They were very lovely. :)

hey hey.. I'm in the same boat (kind of) trying to figure out whether to go for surrey or city university london. when you went for your interview, which uni did you prefer? where could you see yourself studying? I absolutely love living in London and it would be hard for me to leave.. however, surrey has a fantastic reputation, and I can always move back to London once I have graduated.. believe me, 3 years go by fast.. could you live with your parents in surrey? that would save you some serious money.. it's a difficult decision isn't it..

Hi,

Surrey is just as expensive as London...

Hi,

Surrey is just as expensive as London accommodation wise. You just have to go with what you feel is right :) Maybe visit both again and make a decision that way?
