I'm only in year 9 (I know, far too young to be thinking this far ahead), but I will be, without a doubt, studying languages for my entire life.

At university, I'm definitely going to study French (I've just done my GCSE and will be started my A-level course in year 10), but I want to study something else with it. I'm also studying Spanish and Italian, so I could do one of those, or I could start another language (German, Russian, Portuguese, etc.). I absolutely love history and English, too.

I'd be grateful for any opinions, or any experiences of past or present language students.

PS - What about linguistics?

Hating year abroad.

Have you tried talking to your university year...

Have you tried talking to your university year abroad officer about it? Have you thought of giving up the Erasmus grant and going to work some place else to make up for it? Could you try to find a job (I don't know, working in a café or teaching English) in Naples while still pursuing your studies?

I am sure there are options out there for you if you don't want to stay in Naples. Discussing them with someone at your university (YA officer, lecturer, etc.) will help you clear things out and come up with a plan of action. Though it's probably a bit late now to really do anything, as I guess you'll be finishing in June or July, so staying would probably be the best option, if only to pass your year.

What makes a year abroad incredible is the resources you have to find in yourself to find the best in things you're given. Being abroad is never easy, adapting to cultures is a definite challenge and so is learning a foreign language. But it's about stopping to compare everything with what you're used to, and finding ways to enjoy your life in a different manner. Forget clubbing and going out for coffee, maybe you could challenge yourself to visiting everything in the Lonely Planet guide? Start a diary that would tell all the things you find funny about the place? Take series of pictures with specific themes? Find the little things that make you happy about the place (there has to be a few) and focus on these. Look for a language partner in Naples, you'll be able to make new Italian friends who'll show you the hidden and secret places. Check out travelling blogs that wrote about Naples and things to be done that aren't in your guides, etc. Even in a hole there are things to do. Maybe not what you're used to, but if people can do it, so can you. :)

I'm in kind of a similar position. I'm doing single honours Chinese and I'm thinking about doing some optional modules in Thai, which sounds very interesting. I don't know enough about Burmese to say much about it, other than that it looks quite different to Japanese, which might be a problem (compared to say, Korean, which looks a lot closer). In terms of it impacting on your Japanese language, does the course at SOAS actually have optional modules that focus on improving your Japanese? I looked into the course I'm (potentially) doing at Leeds and all the language modules (bar Classical Chinese) are core modules. If all the Japanese language modules are core modules on your course, then you wouldn't be losing out much I don't imagine if if you picked up some Burmese.

Still, if you study another language on the side, it will definitely open up some more doors for you after you graduate. My best advice would be to talk to some of the staff when you get there and get some opinions. Also try and look into the language beforehand, maybe some books or some CD's, to give yourself a little introduction and see if it's something that you'd enjoying speaking and listening to.

Thanks for the reply! I'm leaning more and more towards not taking up Burmese. I feel that I probably won't be good enough by the end of my degree to justify it. But as you say I'm gunna talk to some of the staff and judge on that :D

i'd go for durham as well, in general it seems a lot nicer (only been to open days but got a couple of friends there aswell). Warwick is a good uni, my bro goes there and he loves it, but it's quite separated and the main place 2nd year and above students stay, leamington spa, is quite a way from the campus, 20 minutes on the bus i think. So as general places i would go for durham, and seeing as they both look similar on paper the choice is mostly based on the type of city you wanna live in :)

Good luck! I've finished my IB exams now and it so scary knowing that there is nothing more I can do about them, but I'm taking my A-Level in Russian this June, so I've got plenty to keep working on at the moment. Honestly, I'll be devastated if something went wrong and I didn't get into Notts for Russian, as I'm so excited about uni now.

Heyy I've finished now too (yesterday). It's funny that you expect to feel a surge of overwhelming relief upon completion of the IB but instead you just get incredibly anxious for results day and to find out if you got into uni. Lol. I've already updated my CV and applied for 9 summer jobs! Anyway, good luck with Russian! I hope you get in to Nottingham! :)

I am currently near the end of my first gap year...

I am currently near the end of my first gap year as I decided not to go university last year after not getting my first two options and found it extremely difficult to adapt myself into going to a university through clearing and in a way I am sure it wasn't meant to be as I have never really wanted to go to university. Having said this I do really want to further my education in order to have more chance of getting a good job and I have realised despite being young I would prefer doing an ou degree course from home as I can work (as my parents arnt the most comfortable financially) and move around be flexable.

I am serious about choosing a right path though which Is why my anxiety as started to get the better of me. I am fluent in Italian and think furthering my strength in languages and doing an ou French and Spanish degree would be beneficial for my future.
There are a few things I am worried about though..
1) is an OU degree still looked upon seriously? Is there still a good chance of getting a good job with one?
2) is the level of study good enough?
3) is the support you get from online tutors good enough to get you through?

I know a normal university is probably a lot more prestigious however I am willing to put the work in and because of my parents financial background and the person I am I just don't want to put that weight and stress of going to a normal university as its also far more expensive to get by.

All comments are greatly appreciated. )

Impressive! It's insightful to see your opening post and then the comment above. What materials or path of study did you take in order to learn Italian to such a good level? I'd appreciate any recommendations! :)

Just as much immersion as possible and a bit of grammar! I refer to collins grammar every so often as it is very concise. I read il fatto quotidiano, watch my favourite films and series dubbed in Italian (like game of thrones, doctor who) and write frequently. I also got a leading part in the Italian play at my uni so had a lot of time to practice.

I am now trying to do the same with French and Chinese!

Hello!

It's probably too early for me to be thinking about university as I am only in 4th year (Scotland) and haven't even sat my Standard Grade exams yet (:$), but at the moment I am pretty set on doing languages at university, and then going on to teach Modern Foreign Languages in Secondary Schools. I have always loved languages and I was born and lived in Austria until I was seven. Unfortunately, even though I could speak fluent German when I lived in Austria, I have forgotten almost all of it.:( I am however, doing German Standard Grade now and am continuing it on to Higher, and I am also crashing French Higher which I haven't done since second year.

Anyway, I have always thought that i would just do a Joint Honours Degree in French and German at uni, but recently I've been thinking about doing ab-initio Spanish as well.

My question is, would doing three languages make me less fluent in each language rather than if I just did two? Also, would having a degree in three languages make me more employable for teaching MFL's?

Thank you in advance, and sorry it was so long!:$

If I were you, I'd take those two languages onto Advanced Higher then do a degree in one of them plus Spanish. The other language you could continue with at evening/extra curricular classes offered by the university. I know that Edinburgh Uni has a really good program of language classes that are open to everyone and are cheaper for students, for example, and these cover a range of levels.

Studying Spanish from scratch as part of a degree is going to help you progress much faster than doing it by yourself or in a different class but if you are strong at the other language then you can maintain a good standard outwith a degree and eventually sit the internationally recognised qualification (for French it's the Alliance Francais that do them, can't remember who it is for German, Spanish have the Instituto Cervantes DELE) which will prove your proficiency and be accepted by employers.

I did a joint honours with a language and I would definitely recommend it over single honours. To be honest, I think it would have been a bit boring to just do the language, at least for me.

You should try to find out about the different module options that are available or if you can maybe do major/minor. Sometimes joint honours can restrict your choices but equally single honours can mean you're choosing classes which you're not interested in, just to fill the timetable.

Yes! I have been trying my utmost to convince my history teacher and classmates that German really is a beautiful language, but sadly to no avail. :( Some people just associate it with Hitler's speeches which is not an accurate representation of what the german language is really like!

I do the same with my friends! In fact, I was doing it just two days ago. I was sitting with a guy in my Spanish class who was genuinely intrigued by the language but didn't think it was nice-sounding and another (who used to have the affectionate nickname "Nazi" - make your own judgement there :p) and his only argument was telling me to "say butterfly in German". I really think Schmetterling is a nice word, he just thinks it isn't because he's seen it in one of those memes where they use the rage face and caps lock for German words...I tried to explain that putting anything by an angry face in capital letters is going to make it seem harsher than the others but he just wasn't taking it in! :(

I am currently in France completing the Erasmus programme and I have received the correct amount of Erasmus grant that I am entitled to though I heard that in June/July, Erasmus distributes another Erasmus grant to those who have just completed the programme. This money is left over from the unfilled places from the beginning of the year and as a result, they distribute it to us. A friend of a friend apparently received £950 last July. Can anyone clear this up for me as I would love to use this money to go on holiday!!!:)

French, Spanish and German as majors, Italian as minor as they have downsized the department. Catalan as a half unit module in 2nd and final years.

It depends entirely on you, partly down to what you want to do afterwards too. It's more like language and culture studies at Lancaster I guess. If your combining with linguistics the department at Lancaster is really good so if you we're looking into careers more in that direction it would be a good department for you.

I comes down to the uni itself though, Leeds and Lancaster are very very different unis in terms of all the other really important aspects, remember you'll be spending 3 years there so you need to make the right decision and that doesn't just come down to the academic department.

I think they do, but most won't act on it. I mean, one of the first things I heard my landlady ask me when I arrived was if there were loads of black people in Paris (how would I know, I don't live there?), but apart from staring a lot, I don't think they really do anything. Being white, I haven't experienced racial discrimination in Russia (although I've put up with quite a lot of harassment in the Middle East), so I probably would not be the best person to talk to, but I wouldn't let my skin colour get in the way of my interests too much, Russia's a fascinating place to study and the language is very interesting. :)

When you don't know them, Russians may not appear particularly friendly, they don't really smile in the streets or anywhere, really, and for people used to British manners, Russians are just plain rude, they'll trample you in the metro during rush hour, they rarely say please or thanks in shops, etc. but that's just the way it is, and Russia' definitely not the only country where people act this way (it's a bit like France on steroids, really). Once you get to know Russian people, they're really quite nice and agreeable, they always want to know more about you, where you're from etc., they're quite curious and thirsty for knowledge.

Overall got ABBCCD at AS (over two years) in Classics, German, History, Biology, Drama and Chemistry though I'm retaking German to get an A, achieved a B in History A2 last year and aiming for 2 As this year in German and Classics. But tbh St Andrews care more about extra curricular stuff and personal statement. Where do you wanna apply? :)

Hi I'm sixteen years old and am considering applying for modern and medieval languages in oxford or cambridge (I'd be entering in 2015). I really want to improve my french would anyone have any suggestions of books I could read for this?!! thanks :)

Do you mean books on French language or French literature?

For the former I'd get yourself a good grammar book like http://www.amazon.co.uk/French-Gramm.../dp/0340991240

For French literature I'd start out with something quite simple. The first thing I ever read in French was Le Petit Prince. There's a great little short story by Sartre called les jeux sont faits that I would definitely recommend.

You might also want to start looking at French poetry, as it's likely you will have to discuss a poem in your interview. Baudelaire, Alphonse de Lamartine, Victor Hugo, Verlaine are some good poets that spring to mind.

I'm on a gap year after doing my A Levels last year and am going to be going to do Linguistics at Lancaster in October. It would have been really useful to have some support whilst applying because none of my teachers or family or friends had any idea what linguistics was and therefore many hours were spent trying to explain!

I applied to Lancaster, York, Leeds, Essex and SOAS and got offers for all but firmed Lancaster and had Essex as my insurance.

If anybody else is going to Lancaster to do Linguistics/English Language it would be great to have a chat - if only to calm my nerves!

Go ahead, I'm leaning towards Birmingham slightly at the moment. I've got till next tuesday to choose so I need to decide soon. Pitch it to me

Aha great! Well I'm currently in my third year, so on my year abroad. I started in 2009 and changed my course (I was studying german & music and I moved to German & Italian - that meant I had to study Italian part time for a year, then go full time again in second year).

Ok - good points. Birmingham itself is a great uni - the campus is gorgeous and only a train ride away from the city centre (cheap and quick - trains are frequent). First year halls are nice, private accommodation is fine and everyone lives close to each other which is great. But I'm sure you know the general stuff already!

The languages department is small and really friendly. I think it's quite well structures - everyone does twenty credits of [each] language and then there's quite a lot of choice for the extra modules. There's a fair bit of emphasis on literature but there are cinema modules too, and I did a business German module last year. The gender studies department is housed in the Modern Languages bit, so you can take interesting modules on feminism as well. There's also a focus on translation all through the years in every language, so basically there's something for everyone. You don't have decide to 'focus' on anything at any point - up until fourth year, you can take modules in literature, translation, cinema, anything, even if you didn't study it in second or first year.

The Birmingham year abroad is unusual because you have to either study or be an English language teaching assistant - you can't 'work'. The reason for this is because they think they can't check thorouhly enough where you would be working, and it's not acceptable to be a waiter or work in a hotel or something, which some unis let you do. Whether or not you think this is a good thing is up to you!

Because one of my languages is from scratch, I was given the choice of spending the whole year in the new country or splitting it evenly. (I wasn't allowed to spend the whole year in my better language country obviously). This was good, and I think spending the whole year in Italy and then doing a summer language course in Germany has been a good decision.

Bad points - well, that year abroad thing, if it's important to you.
Recently, the department has changed - it used to be that each language had its own department but now it's all 'department of modern languages'. Not sure yet whether this is a good or bad thing. It means some cuts have been made - i.e. you can't do Italian as a single honours degree anymore, and I think they're cutting arabic too.

In general, Birmingham is in the black though - it's one of the richer universities I think because the VC is quite savvy about saving money.

League tables wise, well I'm not sure... Brum hasn't been in the top 20 in the last few years which I think is a shame. But it's a redbrick university with a good reputation so I don't think it would disadvantage you jobs-wise. Obviously I don't have any experience of Newcastle but I personally have felt that the education I've got has been good here.

Also, they are building an AMAZING new sports hall at Brum!! But it might not be finished in time for you - I think they're starting this summer. It's going to have a 50m pool!

Anyway, hope that helped - if you have any questions feel free to ask :)

I had 76/80 in my oral and 105/120 in the paper....

I had 76/80 in my oral and 105/120 in the paper.
The main things I always do are to keep to a structure in the essays, I start each paragraph the same no matter what the topic is. It helps the examiner follow your path easier and raises your marks for the organisation and structure.

I have my A2 oral this morning, for this I make sure I don't waffle and have three points to make for each side of the argument and use idioms, examiners seem to love that it shows a flair for the language and that you can use it creatively. I also must make sure I ask the examiner a few questions so marks for interaction are as high as possible.
Feeling pretty nervous but I know if I stuck to the logic ill be fine :/
I sometimes struggle with grammar but I try to change the sentence structure so I don't have to use structures I'm not familiar with.

On the whole it's pretty hard to give advice for language as every student uses it differently and has different strengths and weaknesses.
I resat the AS paper to gain a few marks as I really want an A, I'm glad I did as I picked up 13 marks which make me more confident for A2
Good luck!

Hello! :) basically, I got all 5 offers for languages (yipeeeee!), and have decided that my top 3 would be Durham, Warwick and Edinburgh.

However, after visiting all 3 I decided that:

Durham - too small for me, (though perfect for some! :$ ) and too close to home (I'm from Newcastle)

Warwick - didn't like the campus thing, felt too far away from a city, and too far from home.

Edinburgh - Beautiful, easy to reach, and not too expensive for a capital city!

However,

1) Durham is number 9 in Uk for Languages, Warwick is 10, Edinburgh is 28

2) Durham and Warwick are nearly always in the UK top 5-10 generally, whilst Edinburgh is (unfairly i reckon!) more around the top 20-25 mark. However, according to QS world university rankings it's number 20 in the world, which puts it far above Warwick (50) and Durham (95) on the world scale.

So in short - am I making a mistake choosing Edinburgh? Since I want to live and work abroad will the World Uni Rankings mean more than the UK ones anyway?

Grateful for any advice! :$

I've got a similar issue... I have unconditional offers to do French and Spanish at St Andrews, and to do European Studies at Aberdeen. I really love Aberdeen, but I know St Andrews has a good international reputation

Hi everybody,

I am considering transferring to ULIP but can't find out that much about it from the internet. Would any current students or alumni be able to tell me anything? Specifically about what the facilities are like, the quality of the teaching, social life etc.

Thanks very much!

Hey, sorry no one's got back to you sooner I only come on here to scan ULIP threads every two weeks or so.
I've just finished my first year here, so assuming by your username you're currently in the same situation as me.
ULIP is a VERY small university, there's about 150 current students in total. And the facilities are what you'd expect from a university of that size. We probably have only a total of 35 computers in our building.
Teaching is ok, as with every uni there's great lecturers and rubbish ones. For example, my grammar teacher this year has been amazing, but I've really struggled with my oral competence classes.
Also the degree is very culture based, we do a lot of history and the arts in first year.
Let me know more about what you want to know, and I'd be happy to answer your questions.

ok, so i have boiled down my uni choices to leeds or exeter which both are offering me AAB to study french and history.

Exeter is seen as a slightly higher regarded uni than leeds, with a better position in league tables and family friends who are headhunters saying they would choose an exeter graduate over a leeds graduate. Therefore to go there seems like a fantastic opportunity that i would be stupid to not seize....

However, i go to private school and i just have a feeling that it will be just like surrey but down near the sea, and i know looooads of people from my school that are firming exeter, and i just am worried that it won't be much of a change and that i won't be pushed out of my comfort zone very much.

On the other hand, Leeds has a fantastic course and seemed like a really friendly uni went i went to visit, but although i love to have a good time, its huge party reputation is still a bit daunting!

so what do i do?!?! please help! thanks
