I didn't do a degree in events, nor do I work in advertising so you're more than welcome to ignore my opinion ( :p ), but I've always been under the impression that careers like that will assess you more on your experience than the degree you've got. I did a marketing internship last year while studying English Language, and the interviews I had focused almost solely on what I'd done that would be of benefit, and whether these were in or out of my degree didn't seem to be an issue.

My advice would be to get involved in advertising alongside your degree - there's an advertising society at my uni so maybe there will be at yours, and if there isn't, even better - form one! There are some jobs where you really need the right degree, but I don't think advertising is one of them :)

That said of course, you'll have to be aware of potential preferences for people who studied it as a degree as well as getting involved in it, so hopefully that'll just push you harder to do even more :D

Hey! Thanks for replying :)
I know what you mean. Experience is everything nowadays and I think on my placement year I will go into advertising. I just don't wanna cancel my ucas and take year out!
yeah there's a radio society that am interested in and I think there is an advertising one too !
What Uni did you go to ?
cheers for your help :)

Hi Robin and Snoopyx,

I've worked for a very large IT recruitment firm, a mid size finance recruiter (that was bought out by one of the largest recruiters in the world) and now I work for an independent global recruitment firm.

I have mainly covered Banking (retail, Investment, wealth) finance and accounting contract. The average daily rate of our contractors is £347 per day, as they are qualified accountants they generally work in positions for 9 - 15 months, I did place someone at a bank 6 years ago and they are still contracting there!

I previously worked at university selling home insurance (20 - 25 hours a week) and also ran an ebay business at uni so not directly relevant but what I find is that graduates lack an understanding of the workplace, they do not research enough about recruitment / company and come prepared for an interview.

In the IT firm I was benchmarked to be on the phone for 3 hours a day and had a whole host of activities to hit, lets say it wasn't the nicest environment to be in! I found a much more grown up attitude in financial recruitment companies which suited me, although the experience did give me the reality that to make money the effort and self-motivation was really needed so I look back on it realising why its done, I strongly believe it can be done in a better environment but as a training ground it can work.

I have my teams work to meaningful targets and, so rather than doing 50 calls to clients, I would ask them to generate 3 visits. If this takes 3 calls then great, if it takes 100 then so be it.

You will probably hear of people working very long hours.. I never do and it doesn't affect me - I work 8.30 - 6, in at 8 most days though. lots of very successful people in recruitment don't work 12 hour days. If you are working hard during the day then you won't need to.

Again, feel free to ask me anything.

Really good information to have, thank you :) ! I'll be sure to give you a message if I think of questions, if you don't mind.

https://www.facebook.com/damian.crofts?fref=ts

DCM= Damian Crofts Marketing and although the information website is presented in a way that suggests it is a hugely successful company located in a modern and clean office block, the reality is that it is located in a grotty alleyway in the arse end of Maidstone, in a cramped little building full of delusional morons who all think that they are the dogs *******s.
If you do attend the interview you may notice you have a lot of competition in the waiting room, the volume of people means nothing because they will accept anyone willing to go through with it (but at the same time make you think that you are indeed special and have got the job due to your credentials) in reality, your CV and any qualifications or past experience listed on it aren't worth a **** to them and they probably don't even read it.
I worked with DCM for a year and never got a penny. I made plenty of "sales" in my time there, but the money never came through and I was always met with excuses when ever I inquired as to why the **** I wasn't getting paid. I had to support myself on savings that had taken me years to put away, and if not that then a lot of financial support from friends and family.
You are lead to believe that you are being employed by a company, you are not. You will be registered as self employed (a detail written in fine print on a document they ask you to sign that you will be told is necessary for health and safety and insurance purposes) and as a result have a completely unstable wage based on the commission you get for scamming old women and disabled people out of their money. But don't worry, they train you to do exactly that.
So if you have good morals and a firm sense of what is right and wrong, you can ensure that they will squash this out of you best they can and then sugar coat the industry with a bunch of technical **** that sounds the part, but once you walk away and break it down you can see it is complete horse ****, a horse **** that remains a horse **** no matter how many coats of marketing jargon dulux red you paste it with. You will be lead to believe that everyone on board this rapidly sinking ship is being trained and guided toward a management position using completely legal and ethical business initiative that has never been thought of before. This is dramatically incorrect, the system is a pyramid scheme. The management is successful because the man at the bottom is screwed out of a more than hard earned wage and the profit goes up to the tippy top of the scam triangle while you get what ever falls out of the proverbial man's mouth; eg a measly £5 for working from 10am until 9pm, a pay slip that should read £55 at least by law of standard minimum wage. Impossible to live off of, you couldn't even buy food for yourself at this rate, considering if you make one sale a day and work 6 days a week you are making £30 which isn't even close to what you should, could and deserve to get daily.
This elaborate scam will be presented to you as a fantastic business opportunity at every step and every short coming will be shrugged off the companies shoulders and put swiftly back onto yours. They will have you believe that the obvious company flaws are your problem and completely your responsibility.
You will meet many people similar to above who preach the company work ethic and system like it is the be all and end all of working. The system is simple, the system is brain washing. If a student walks into a new job and is told that they can become a manager on a high pay and run a company branch, the appeal is obvious but it is a fairy tale. They need you, you do not need them.
So in conclusion, do not fall for it as I and many others have fallen for it. You will lose your money, you will be taken advantage of, you will be made to think that you are the reason that you aren't making any money, and even if you do make your way up, your future is only managing the company debt and becoming the guy that gets arrested when the **** hits the fan.

Hi,

Seeing as this was posted a week ago you've probably already done it....but.....I had a group interview for Debenhams on Saturday. First of all you do an "icebreaker" to help you feel more comfortable/settle in to the interview. We had to state two lies and one true thing about ourselves, and the other people in the group had to guess which one was the lie. That wasn't assessed. Then we did the assessed group/individual exercise. We got the words "Customer Focus" and had to think of a word to do with Customer Focus for each of the letters, E.G. "C would be Caring, S could be Smile. We did this on our own for about 5 mins, then we were split up into groups of 3/4 and had to feedback to the rest pf the group what we wrote, then as a group we choose the best words and re-write it using ideas from the group. We then feedback to the other group and interviewers our final choice of words and why we chose them.
After the group interview I also had an individual interview, which I preferred as it felt less pressured. If you had a phone interview before then they just ask you basically the same questions, for example, who would you say are Debenham's competitiors. You'll be fine, just try to relax!

Thank you! But it turned out there wasnt even a group interview as the manager was new... all that panic for nothing! I got the job the day after anyway :)

Hi I am thinking about going into marketing after graduating from BA English at Queen Mary University of London. What kind of questions do they ask you at interview? Are there commercial awareness questions and how can I prepare for these?
How difficult is it to find a job compared to marketing?
What does your daily routine consist of?
What are the hours like?
What are the average number of years between career progressions from executive to manager etc. and what are the average salaries at each stage?
Realistically am I likely to find a job with a 2.1. in English Literature and straight A grades at A level and GCSE?
Roughly how much work experience is required?
Also any more general advice and tips about entering the industry would be much appreciated thanks!

My tuppence worth: £20k in London will be pretty meagre. Sure, you won't starve, but you won't have much disposable income. Can you try and negotiate for more? A good technique that I've used a few times (if they won't budge) is to request that you have a salary review built in to your contract after 6 months. Then after you've proven how wonderful you are you can revisit it! Good luck :)

Hi everyone..this is my first post haha finally got round to making an account here :D
A week ago I got an email from John Lewis telling me that my application was successful and that I was invited for an interview which was so exciting! So I chose the day and time I wanted to go for the interview and on Tuesday I had a one-to-one interview for the catering assistant position. It was a short one even though it said it would be a 45 minute one online. Anywho, the interview went quite well and the guy said he would ring me soon to let me know if I got the job. I haven heard back from him and I haven got an email either. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

Hi there,Yes certainly, I left university and played sport to a high level however struggled with a head injury, I decided I wanted to progress in the sports industry however having grown up in family businesses and have a natural flair for entrepenuership and a degree in business I chose to develop a personal training company in my home town, from here I have now a team of PT working delivering sessions across my region. I didnt want to stop there- I wanted a product which would be selling whilst I was sleeping, working, etc which did not require my time as a service where the maximum earnings are dependent on my time. I chose to be involved in a MLM business from the US which is a health and wellbeing product the network in the US is huge- it is a product which is the very first of its kind, I reluctantly heard a little more about it- tried and tested the product numerous times and stepped in CAREFULLY due to the ethos of MLMs in the UK- however, I have not looked back, such a fantastic opportunity for young people- graduates- work from home mums etc to be involved in a successful business model. I hope this explains a little more....
