What do Cambridge think about Engineering-related extra curricular interests/qualifications when you are applying? I'm wondering what they would think of me having an Amateur Radio licence and being in the air cadets. Thanks in advance.

Depends as to what you actually do in the air cadets :p

Generally unless it's directly subject related they're not really that bothered, but if you're doing something engineering related in the Air Cadets then they're likely to appreciate it (but it's not going to be make or break in terms of an offer - AS UMS are FAR more important for Engineering).

OK, so to summarise, for Cambridge from what people are saying it looks OK to drop Chemistry (if I'm only likely to get a weak A in it at best) provided I do Maths, Further Maths and Physics and get A* in the Further Maths (and therefore probably in Maths too) and at least a strong A in Physics?

The fact that I will finish Maths A2 this year and therefore will only be doing Further Maths and Physics A2 next year is not a problem - in terms of demonstrating work capacity. Does that sound about right?

Sounds to me that you will have enough time to put a lot of work into preparing for STEP. I advise doing this and telling them that you will be doing it. Be positive about what work you will be doing that contributes towards your maths. Don't sound as if you are getting out of things, which is what is indicated by an "is this enough?" attitude, as if you only want to make sure that you get over some kind of hurdle for demonstrating sufficient motivation.

If you get an offer, it will include STEP II and III. What are you doing over the summer? How about getting yourself up to good STEP I standard by the time the application form goes in in October? Or at least by the time you get interviewed in December. Just an idea. Maybe do some STEP II work as well. Both I and II are almost wholly based on the A Level syllabus for Maths, not Further Maths. (Not completely wholly, though - STEP has its own syllabus.) A couple of excellent STEP booklets by Stephen Siklos, who runs STEP, are online. In short, don't think in terms of what's "enough". Show drive.

From my experience, maths is easier than any of the sciences at A-level to get high UMS and is certainly easier to get an A* at A2.

W.r.t. the specific questions: the self-learning, how is this realized? I trust there are some courses you are taking. Is it largely projects, papers of written exams? What is the material that you have to study like (books, papers, hand-outs, ...)? Also, 9 months sounds as a short notice to do a dissertation plus additional coursework.

The list of courses available to take this year is here. You choose any combination of courses that adds up to either 6 * 16 hours or 9 * 16 hours depending on your option, which determines whether you do a research project or just an essay respectively. The number of hours refers to the amount of lectures - the rest of the time you are expected to self-study with the help of handouts and books. Generally knowing the handouts is sufficient to do well in the course but learning with books recommended by the lecturer will give you a larger amount of knowledge. The courses are assessed in quite different ways and you can see how this will be done before you pick the course. It ranges from sitting a traditional exam to a project to an essay to sitting a take-home open-book exam, or a mixture of more than one style. The length of the course is sufficient because the dissertation I feel is less substantial than at other places.

Having done some further research in answer to my question above, it looks like there are only 44 people doing phil part I this year. 48 were accepted so 4 people must have dropped out or changed course when they got to Cambridge, or maybe there was a change in the pattern of people taking gap years. Also the gender ratio seems to have changed: it's split 22/22 male/female whereas historically it's been mainly male.

So I guess the 61 offers are a reaction to a reassessment of the likely offers/take-up ratio and a bit of spare capacity, plus maybe more deferred offers than normal.

Has anyone else got this ridiculous condition where they won't officially confirm your place until you've completed the "Withdrawn from current study" condition? My condition is that I have to either have completed my current course (a Masters) or withdrawn by the time I've started at Cambridge. This in itself is completely reasonable, and not an issue because my course will finish in September, and my PhD will start in October. The issue is that to have "completed" my course, Cambridge say I need to provide evidence that I've completed my dissertation - which won't be until September, and my college (Downing) can't allocate me accommodation until I've been "confirmed"... which by September means there might not be any left. Considering I don't even need a Masters to do my PhD, it just seems like such a stupid condition which may actually affect me getting accommodation.

Heh, sorry for the long rant.

hey ryx- dont worry about it, i'm sure this condition happens to a lot of people. just email the course administrator with your worries and the people at your college. most colleges guarantee first year graduates accommodation so they will make sure you're looked after

Thanks for the informative and helpful reply.
Haha, I would rather not show Cambridge my marks for individual subjects/components. Anyway I was hoping to take computer science with physiology or evolution as the option in year 1. Unfortunately this was a relatively late aspiration, as my interest in computer science has been on the backburner for years, and I only have some rudimentary programming experience to show for it. I will probably try my luck and apply to Cambridge this year, unless I miraculously get into medicine locally.

@illusionz
haha yea, when I saw the requirements/preferences on the Cambridge website practically every college listed those 2 subjects =(.
