Yep! It was a bit of a mission, they need financial info from 2011/12 and my partner was in and out of different jobs with no p60, so it meant a lot of phoning round. I sent it off along with my application. I'm glad I've got it all finished but now there's nothing else I can do except wait.... The placements that you go on will be full time placements. I would recommend that you keep every day free during the academic year, right now. Your finalised timetable will be confirmed to you in September. Before then, everything is subject to change.

Make sure you book on to the open day at the right campus! Have a look at the web page for the course that you are interested in and have a look to see what campus it is taught at.

Use open days as a chance to have a look around the campus, check out the facilities and meet lecturers and current students.

Deadlines

UCAS – Generally the 15^th January, but medical type courses as well as all courses at Oxford and Cambridge have a deadline of 15^th October.

Student finance – Applcations are now open! Get your application in as soon as possible to ensure that your payments are not delayed come September. The deadline to ensure your money arrives on time is 31^st May for new full-time students and 28^th June for returning full-time students.

Halls of residence – Applications are now open! The sooner you apply, the sooner your chances are of getting your first choice of rooms. Every new undergraduate student is guaranteed accommodation, either in University or private halls of residence.

Finance

Tuition fees – The entire cost of your undergraduate tuition fees will be covered by student finance, if your course isn’t eligible for funding by another body such as the NHS and if you haven’t already received 4 years of student finance funding. This will be paid directly to the University, so don’t worry about arranging payments to us for your fees unless you are self-funding.

Accommodation – Costs can vary, however the minimum annual fee for halls of residence is £3901.38. If you receive the maximum amount of student finance available then you will have enough money to pay for your accommodation, with money left over to subsidise your living costs.

Additional course costs – At the University of Derby, all mandatory costs are included in your tuition fees. If there is a mandatory field trip or materials (such as laboratory coats and safety glasses) then these are included. If you choose an optional module which also has a field trip, you must meet the expenses required yourself. These costs will not be included in your tuition fees.

Part time work – The University of Derby has a lot of opportunities for its students to earn some extra cash, through employment schemes such as student ambassadors and student mentors, or through the Student Employment Agency (SEA). Not only will the SEA email you work opportunities when they become available, they also have materials to help you with your CV writing skills and can arrange an appointment for you to see one of our careers advisers. The work that you will receive through the SEA will generally be temporary, one day shifts at the University helping out members of staff with things like filing, moving office and contacting potential students. There is a great variety of work available, so there is something for everyone to do.

Scholarships – The University of Derby provides its scholarship through the National Scholarship programme. There are 300 scholarships available each year and consist of a £1000 grant and a £2000 tuition fee waiver. The eligibility requirements are specified on our website, so do check to see if you’re eligible. If you are a sports person, you may be eligible for a Team Derby bursary or scholarship. These are available for talented athletes, along with other criteria that can be seen here. If you think you may be eligible for a Team Derby bursary or scholarship,complete the application form available on the website. Other scholarships are available for students and can be found at Scholarship Search.

UDSU/Nightlife

UDSU stands for the University of Derby Student’s Union. The Student’s Union plays a vital role in the University experience, managing sports clubs and societies, fresher’s fair and your affiliated student nights. These are fantastic opportunities to meet new people and take up a new hobby. The other side of the Student’s Union supports you academically and ensures that your physical and mental wellbeing are maintained. Make sure you get to know your sabbaticals, as they can help to make your University experience a much more memorable one! Get involved with as much as you can!

Campuses

We have 3 main campuses, Derby, Buxton and Chesterfield. Derby is our base campus, where the majority of our courses are taught and where you can find an answer to any question you might have. Within Derby, we have several sites, Kedleston Road, Markeaton Street, Britannia Mill and Derby Theatre. Kedleston Road is the biggest of the sites (this campus mainly covers Education, Health, Sciences, Business, Computing and Law courses), with Markeaton Street (covering mainly Art, Design and Technology courses) and Britannia Mill (a specialist facility covering a range of courses that have previously been mentioned) being a short walk away. Derby Theatre is in the city centre and is a fully functioning theatre that hosts many productions per year, both through the University students and external companies.

Our Buxton site covers our more vocational courses, such as Catering and Outdoor Pursuits. This is also where our HE courses are held, including Hairdressing and Beauty. The Buxton campus is in the heart of the picturesque Peak District, so is ideal for countryside lovers.

Finally, our Chesterfield site covers the Adult Nursing degree and the Mentoring in Practice module. Chesterfield is a historic market town, so provides a unique learning environment for our students.

General FAQ

What should I do if I want to change courses after I have accepted an offer on UCAS?
Contact our admissions team on 01332 591 167 and tell them your situation. Have your UCAS application number ready, along with the name of the course that you received an offer for and the name of the course that you wish to switch to. You can book halls of residence here, applications are now open, so if it's halls you're wanting, best apply as soon as you can! If you apply before the end of June, we guarantee you accommodation, which is a nice bit of security. There are other types of accommodation available, such as private halls of residence and private renting, phone the student housing shop on 01332 591 302.

The number 6 departs from the train station and takes you straight to the Kedleston Road site, via town. This takes around 20 minutes, but can be longer during peak times. The cost for the number 6 bus for the 2012/13 year was £1.80 for one trip, or £9 for a 10 trip ticket, working out at a bargain cost of 90p per trip! This usually goes up slightly each year, but should give you a good approximation of cost.

There are loads of events that you can still go to during freshers! The student's union holds events in different locations and at different times of day, so you don't have to worry about going home really late and missing the last train! The union has paint balling days, bowling, fitness classes and much more, so you're not going to miss out at all!
