The department has pretty poor ties with industry...

The department has pretty poor ties with industry at the undergraduate level. But then you can't expect undergrads to be anything more than lay programmers, which is why they tend to get programming placements in less well known companies. At the postgraduate level the ties are, from what I've heard, much better. There is active cooperation between our academics and industry on various projects. Many of our PhD students are sponsored by various companies to conduct targeted research for them.

Since this is the first year the MSc's will be run I cannot comment on what the industry ties will be. In all probability you will have to, with the help of the department, individually apply to placements. If you end up not getting one, the department will organise one for you. I doubt many of the placements themselves will be exclusive to RHUL students. In short, what I'm trying to say is this: as a Masters student you most probably won't be actively collaborating on targeted research with a certain company; instead, you will have to find your own placement by, for example, applying for a year in industry with Google (to which anyone can apply). All of the above holds for any other department too by the way.

The real question you should therefore be asking is how good the department is in data science. That's an easy one. We're amazing at it :D ! All boasts aside, we have some excellent professors in the field that have started, and importantly contributed to, many a topic in machine learning. We're a theory-heavy department so expect to get your fair share of bookish maths from our crazy professors :p . However, the MSc you've applied to is mostly applied in nature so don't worry, it'll definitely be more applied than theoretical!

The building itself isn't exactly an architectural wonder, but the campus is very nice. The beer in the local pubs is very good too.

So I've put RHUL as my firm choice, with an offer of AAB for English Literature & Creative Writing, starting September 2010. I have strong references alongside a strong personal statement and portfolio. I'm studying English Literature, Drama and Art and at the time of application was predicted AAB, respectively.

As it stands now, I am sort of crashing and burning in Art. At a rough guess I think I may scrape a B, but will probably end up with a C. However, my EngLit and Drama results have a chance of going up, so I may be looking at AAC or A*A*C.

I've heard RHUL can be quite leniant with their offers, and I know I had a good personal statement etc, but I'm also aware English is a very competitive course. What do you think, could I make it in?

I think you have a good chance honey. It can be a great help to have a good personal statement - not to mention those wonderful predicted grades in the subjects that matter! I wish you all the luck - I have also applied for a similar course. I do not think you will be at a huge disadvantage if you get stars on those A's :D

Hey, I got in through clearing for psychology myself last year, but saying that,, they admitted like 100 extra students that year and we think it might be because of the rise in fees and many students having decided not to go to university after all? I don't know, but I'm glad they did that or else i wouldn't have gotten in!! so yes, they might be like that this year too!

Hi
How long did the clearing process take? For you to actually get through to them and receive a place? I'm so scared about not getting the grades needed because of some replacement papers in maths this year and its stressing me out. Do you know if there are any foundation courses that I could do before starting a psychology degree if the grades aren't good enough? Sorry for so many questions :$

It really depends on the society.

Most societies have some kind of email newsletter that they send out once a week telling you about all the things they have planned or where they are on Facebook/Twitter/etc... You could sign up to all the ones that interest you can see how you get on? I guess you won't be going to Freshers Fayre (which is where the majority of the joining of societies happens), but you should be able to email the committee and ask to be added.

I think the library is fine, and if theres a book you need, just contact the librarian in charge of Classics books and he'll get the book.

As for connections to the British Museum, I'm not too sure, unless you mean someone like Amanda Claridge (who teaches courses on classical art). As for the Institute of Classical Studies, there are connections, but I believe everyone University of London College with a Classics department has this connection--it's a UoL institution. Granted, these facilities will not be readily accessible as say, for someone who attends UCL or KCL, but then again, if that person lives in Outer London, then they will be in the same situation anyway. :p

If you are really considering taking up Ancient Greek, again you can try a language programme over the summer, or you can even buy the book that is used (Athenaze UK Edition) to get an idea or to start preparing beforehand.

I hope that makes sense, and hopefully someone can help!

Oh I'm not saying suicide I was googling whether that story of that polar bear painting thing was true? But it's just surprising that that there has been some deaths to fellow students at that University.

Oh, sure, no worries. Yeah there doesn't seem to be much information about the polar bear suicide story on the internet- in fact, the only time I've ever heard about it is from fellow students, so it really is a myth, haha.

As for the other student deaths, well, statistically some students are going to die at every university- if you google the name of any other university with the phrase 'student deaths' there are (unfortunately) lots of examples, so statistically it's not surprising that sometimes students die whilst at university. Egham Hill admittedly has been a big problem- I think three students have died over the years whilst crossing that road- so I'm glad they're trying to do something about that, but accidents happen.

Well, I can certainly endorse Holloway- I've had a good time here, but I can't speak for Surrey, naturally. Would you still be getting a University of London degree if you went to Surrey? If not, then Holloway would be a good bet, as University of London degrees are extremely prestigious, which would aid in getting a job. I think (and am really not sure) that Holloway will probably have a better reputation too. But both are fine institutions- I can give glowing praise to RHUL, but know nothing about Surrey.

The 'University of London' thing really isn't as big a deal as Holloway makes it out to be. Might help a bit when getting jobs abroad but with some of the more prestigious colleges either leaving or considering leaving the UoL, it doesn't hold as much weight as it once used to.

OP, Holloway and Surrey are very similar on the 'prestige' scale of things, and they're also similar in other ways- both have pretty campuses that are in fact quite close to each other (though Holloway is arguably prettier, haha), and both have good business schools as far as I know. If I were you I'd choose based on the course- which course has more modules that you'd enjoy? I know you're abroad but if you can have a look at photos of each campus, you might get more of a feel as to which one you'd prefer. Also, whilst I'm sure both are great for international students, I have to say that Holloway does seem to be a particularly international university, with lots of societies and other facilities on offer specifically for international students, and you certainly wouldn't feel left out. Perhaps check out what Surrey has to offer for internationals in particular?

Hope that helps a little, I can understand it must be tough to choose between two universities when you're not in the country but the course in particular is important so it's definitely worth comparing the two on that basis.
