To be honest, the best answer is probably to try it out and see how it goes. You can always adjust if necessary. For example, some people at my office actually keep their suits in a cupboard in the office and change in the morning. Lots of people change their shoes when they get in. You will soon figure out how things work!

I'd really recommend looking up the European...

I'd really recommend looking up the European Voluntary Service. You can see some info about in on the British council website (http://www.britishcouncil.org/societ...ry-service-evs). If you 18-30 years old and live in the UK you can apply to go on EVS to a European country to volunteer for 2-12 months, and the EU will pay for food, accommodation, pocket money and 90% travel. I'm not sure how much longer this offer is going to last, though, given the general state of economies in Europe!

But for example, I'm currently in Hungary on an EVS with an organisation called Compass Egyesulet (who are looking for another Brit volunteer at the moment actually :) https://www.facebook.com/compass.egyesulet). I live with other volunteers who come from all over Europe, I help with language clubs, youth work, and community events, and I have the chance to live in Hungary for a year. Again, I'd really recommend having a look at EVS and the projects that are out there!

Since you've worked in the past, you were a tax payer, so you've paid into the system so I don't see why it would be wrong or unethical for you take e a little out. I understand where you're coming from. It took me ages to finally sign on a couple of years ago because I had some ridiculous notion of pride. Remember pride comes before a fall. If all else fails then I'd say you should sign on. Benefits are there for people like you who are in need, especially with a baby on the way and desperately looking for work.

I'm not going to lie, the Job Centre can really make you feel like scum and you'll be surrounded by a few "undesirables" when you sign on but the vast majority of people I encountered were far from the stereotypical benefit claimant who is only there is scrounge.

If the time comes when you really need it then I advise not to turn your back on a lifeline for any reason.

I think it's fine. I have a CV that's based more on the skills I have than on just the chronological work experience, e. g. I'll have something like

June - July 2011
Receptionist at Hotel Such and Such
At this job I learned to manage time effectively as I had to attend to several tasks at the same time. I also learned how to deal with the questions and requests of clients in a friendly and efficient way.

This is just an example, but in some cases, a skill-focused CV (where you would use the word 'I') is actually better suited than a purely chronological one - for instance, if you have no work experience that's particularly relevant in itself to the job you're applying for, but you do feel you learned some things at your previous jobs that would be useful in this job.

Doesn't matter. Both parents are in high up director-position roles and tell me it doesn't matter; uncle recently retired early after being president of a company and told me it doesn't matter, his wife is a recruitment consultant and said it doesn't matter. I know the party-line here is that it's a big deal and you simply cannot do it, but as for me I will take the advice of people who earn over 100k a year and have been hiring people for over 25 years. If it does matter to that person hiring, you probably wouldn't want to work for them anyway - brb not hiring someone for saying "I did xyz".

The 'I' is implicit in a CV which is always about the author, the person named at the top. Whilst some people might not be bothered by a page of 'I did this' and 'I did that', it doesn't set the standard business tone, which is more formal and less personal. At the CV stage the recruiter isn't looking at the person, the CV is the more anonymous skills filter, the interview is for working out what the character and personality of the individual is. So whereas some people won't mind 'I did this', some people will find it grating and 'chatty' and will mind, but no-one minds the more business like tone that begins with the verb, eg Organised... or Led.... So your best bet, particularly when you are applying for professional jobs as opposed to Saturday jobs, is not to use 'I'.

Beginning your bullet points (you shouldn't be using full sentences and blocks of text in a CV either) with a relevant verb also creates a pace and cadence to your CV which gives it much more impact. Remember that at this stage, the employer is simply dispassionately 'scoring' your CV against the list of skills they put in the advert. It used to be that few employers did this, but nowadays, when even simple entry level jobs get 100+ applicants, quick, brutal filtering is the name of the game for very many employers. Second to that, the increasingly litigious nature of the public and the equality and diversity laws mean that most large employers and all publicly funded employers operate a very objective, scored filtering system, where the most competitive applicants are those that pack in the strongest evidence in the fewest words - but the same words as the employer used in the advert.

Would that my employer paid me 100k plus, but I've just recruited to a very senior role in a significant public body, which got applicants from people in senior roles at PwC, Barclays, BoE etc and not one of them used 'I' in their CV.

I have just finished uni and have an interview for an admin job which requires me to complete a word and excel test, the job is a fairly basic administrative job so I'm hoping its not too complex although I did stupidly say my Microsoft Office skills were good...(despite not using excel since school!) Other things to know:
- How to call functions
- Basic cell formatting
- How to make tables
- How to draw and alter graphs
- How to call data from different sheets

If you have a couple of days and really want to get up to speed, learn about pivot tables - this would be counted as "advanced" by most but are actually quite easy to use and are INCREDIBLY powerful.

You mentioned that you want to work as a theatre usher, but need experience. Apply to be a cinema usher first - you don't need experience for that. The first job that I got, after my A Levels and with no experience (not even volunteering) was working as an usher in an Odeon cinema. I really enjoyed it to be honest - I got to watch films and have pick and mix, and quite liked working with people all day.

Anyway, you would be able to get a job in a cinema (just apply to all the ones near you, and be positive, especially in the interview). That will give you relevant experience for applying to be a theatre usher or tour guide or whatever it is you want to do.

Short of that, I cannot help you. Reading the thread I genuinely can't tell if you are just trolling, because you must be one of the most negative and pessimistic people I have seen. The world is tough, and all jobs have negative aspects to them. No one is above hard work. We do what we can to better ourselves by learning new skills and gaining new experiences, and to be honest, if you are not prepared to put in the hard graft to get to do something you want to do in the long term, I don't think you really deserve to have that "dream job", whatever it may be.

No one is entitled to any kind of job, you have to work for it.

Given the state of the economy I recommend sending targeted applications/CVs to multiple sectors. That's what I've done during my 4th year. Most of my coursemates have been solely targeting the chemicals industry and most have struggled to get anything. Those of us that also aimed at finance/banking have achieved a position of some sort and have fared better. Don't be picky initially, do the opposite and be picky if you get a few offers!!

Hi guys, my names craig! I've just signed up to this great site. I was just wondering has anybody had a telephone interview for Tescos graduate scheme? ..

As tonight at 6pm i had my first ever telephone interview. It last 42 minutes. The lady in question asked various questions about the company. My career aspirations. Which were focused on the BUYING aspect of tesco's.

I mentioned that within the seven months of working for tescos as a part time employee i earned a values award, which she said 'very good' ... i know nothing major but??

What tescos five key strengths were. In reply to this question i mentioned, PRICE, EMPLOYEE'S, CLUBCARD SCHEME, INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, and i couldn't think of the last strength? Which i apologised for stating my mind had gone blank?

At the end of the interview clare mentioned, don't worry you did well! And you will hear back once we have passed the information onto your manager in Tesco.

What signs could i pick up that the interview was a success?

Would like any feedback on this subject.

I totally know what you mean! I'm the same, and it doesn't help that most jobs in my field (allied education professionals such as librarians, teaching assistants and tutors) ARE mostly part-time

Although for the hour I do get paid well, nothing beats the stability of being in full-time work where you don't have to stress about having flu shots every year and budgeting all the time just in case something unexpected happens. Which it did last year when I was involved in a serious car accident, and on another separate occasion had to have my (4, deeply impacted) wisdom teeth out (in the chair).

I hope your situation gets better too, keep trying like I am! :) And don't feel afraid to discuss this with people you know in good steady jobs. All the best xo

the awful truth is if you get a 2.2 from warwick you probably should have worked a little bit harder.
There's usually some provision for rounding up a %age point or 2 to the next classification, dunno what it is at warwick off the top of my head.

The hidden assumption behind these threads is that you'll find it easier to get the marks at a lower ranked uni but I don't think that's necessarily a given.

You may be right, though I do find it surprising that employers would completely disregard the fact they managed to get into a top uni because they just missed out on a 2.1, but like has been pointed out, that's just the system.

And don't get me wrong, I'm with you there with your other point, as I'm at a relatively low-ranked uni myself (its not an ex-poly or anywhere near as low as London met but its not a russell group uni) and it does frustrate me to see people on here slagging off non-RG unis saying how you'll be worked much less vigourously and the marking will be a lot nicer, but I don't know whether this is necessarily true.

Obviously I don't know in terms of workload, but having looked at classification stats on unistats (for my subject that is), I get the impression that the marking at my uni won't too dissimilar to higher unis. At your Oxbridge and RG unis, the % of students getting 1sts/2.1s is high, around 85/95%, whereas when you look down the rankings, the % goes down, at my uni its a pretty poor 60% (and only about 5/10% get 1sts), as there are clearly more dossers here unfortunately and then of course you've got external markers as well that ensure there's no grade inflation going on. So it seems to me that people are getting what they deserve here, whether its the same at the ex-polys I wouldn't know though.

Recently, I have been thinking about trying my...

Recently, I have been thinking about trying my luck in bookkeeping and having done a quick search, I can see that people with knowledge and experience are looked for (obviously, as in any job). I don't know the basics but I know I could learn and have found a course that is recommended by ICB (Institute of Certified Bookkeepers) that I wouldn't mind doing. I'd actually be quite happy to do it. I'm currently in an under employed job which I enjoy at times but other times, I really think I'm wasting my potential so it'd be a welcome change where my brain is actually learning something new and being stimulated again. It'd probably make me feel as if I have some direction in my life once again. I'd obviously home learn the course due to working full time hours as I do need the income at the minute.

My concern is this; I don't want to fork out for the course, do it and end up in the same situation where I'm unable to get an actual job due to lack of relevant experience. I want this decision to be a good decision and have potential to progress further. I'm wondering if there are any people who have already chosen this route or know some piece of advice that I could find useful. I'd appreciate it loads.

ie HR Management, you will need to look for development opportunites, perhaps apply to HR graduate schemes such as HuntressGroup, most banks and big corporations also have HR schemes.
Just an idea; if all this fails try to look for other jobs where progression is more viable.

I'm appearing my IGCSEs in January 2014. I am weak in maths and I hate maths, but I find physics very interesting. If you talk about career, I'm interested in the medical sector as I love Biology, and if I dont get into medical school then I want to be an airline pilot (I'm already a flight simulator pilot lol :$ some real life pilots say that flight simulator is more difficult than real world flying lol)
I have appeared Maths GCSE in January 2013, and I got a C... Should I keep my C and concentrate on other subjects or should I resit maths? Thanks for helping, I'm really confused as to what I should do

In my opinion, I think you should resit Maths, it is important in almost any career to have Maths at GCSE level at least. And if one day you do decide to go down the career of becoming an airline pilot, you will definitely need to have Maths at A-level.

Work on your maths and if you still cannot do it, get a tutor to help. It might be hard work but it's very important to have.

I just have a few questions though. Firstly, how long would it take me to join? Providing my medial, interview and whatnot goes well. Secondly, I am worried it might conflict with working a part time job on a Saturday, and my study time for a levels, would it be interfering much with that?
If anyone has been a special while in a similar situation to me, I would be very interested in knowing more.

No, they can't give you a bad reference in the sense of it being negative about your personal character, but they can be factual and they have to be honest. For example, they can state the facts of things such as your attendance level e.g. 50% or something like that.

Yes they can. The legal obligation is to honesty. That's why you should always ask someone if they are prepared to be your referee before putting their names down. The convention is that if they feel they would have to give you a bad reference, they decline to be your Referee. The issue comes when you have disciplinary or timekeeping issues, ad the potential employer not only insists on having a reference from a specific person, ie your current/previous employer, but also in the reference request, asks them to answer specific questions. Some reference requests are very generic eg 'Please comment on the suitability of Ms Jones for the job of Assistant Librarian', others are very much more specific eg ' Please comment on Ms Jones timekeeping, honesty and reliability. Please also detail any disciplinary measures and instances of absence for sickness or other non-leave days'. In which case failing to respond is usually taken as a negative.

Would really like some information from those who are outside of London if this sort of thing exists where you are?
My placement is at a Library, so they seem to be pretty relaxed about me going to interviews which will stop me from completing my 30hrs. I had an interview this morning and called in to take whole day off :p. I guess they just count me as having done 8hrs today as I was scheduled to do... otherwise it is mathematically impossible for me to do 30hrs!
In my interview today I spoke about working at Library and how it makes me better qualified for the job... he didn't seem to care whether or not I was working there 8hrs a week (which I would like to do) or the pointlessly over the top 30hrs.

My job at the moment is to find a job, not working at the Library for £1.70/hr with a bunch of hysterical women earning 5x what I'm earning!
A national disgrace.

You don't stop applying for graduate schemes. ...

You don't stop applying for graduate schemes. You just apply for the other jobs too. Taking a job that in itself is dead end isn't actually so bad. Applying for higher level jobs from a position of being employed gives you an advantage over those who are unemployed. IME many HR departments automatically reject applications from people who are unemployed especially these days when they receiving hundreds of applications per job.

I have a degree and years of higher level experience but when I was made redundant I didn't restrict myself to jobs in my field although that's what I looked at first each morning. I applied for jobs cleaning toilets, shop assistant, data entry, etc, basically every job I was capable of doing. I did it as it was the right thing to do. I wasn't claiming JSA so I didn't have to satisfy the Job Centre.

Choose something you're good at and have some aptitude for. Other things like interest, prestige, salary and desire etc. carry different weighting with different people, some people value being interested in their work and others don't. Just like some want to know they are making a difference and others don't care and just want a paycheck.

Personally, I chose mine because I have always had aptitude for maths and numbers, find business interesting and enjoy interacting with new people.

Thanks for the reply! I personally have to be interested and enjoy somthing I do, I think thats most important for me, but my current line of work I dont have either :P lol

I am interested in alot of IT related stuf but im doing application support and I hate helpdesk work, dislike communicating over phones and have no interest in the application im supporting lol

I think I'd like being a network technician because I like working with my hands and practical work, but I've got a steep learning curve comming from a primarily software background.

Other than that most of my likes are around practical/manual work but I have no qualifications or much experience in these (just got all IT qualifications, well that and a business diploma and a fitness certificate)

Have considered moving into fitness/sports careers before because I really do enjoy practicing it and preaching it, and enjoy to talk about it, but I felt somewhat inferior or intimidated to other guys on my course, while I had more technical knowledge of the subject, they were alot more social and confident, which I think is fairly important to coaching/instructing sport.

Thanks for the reply anyway though man, what job is it you do if you dont mind me asking? genuinely interested.

The good news is, they've agreed to a phone interview on Thursday.

The less brilliant side of it though, is that it's only a preliminary interview and, if that goes well, I'll still have to go to the interview in person by the sounds of it. So I've basically made things harder for myself by asking for an extra pre-interview interview...

The last time I had a full-time job was this previous autumn, but for the last five months or so I have been working five part-time jobs, all of whom are still my current employers. None of them are very relevant for my position and I haven't worked many hours with any of them. Who should I put down as my reference? The employer from the previous autumn, or any of the current employers?
Should I even tell them that I'm working this many jobs?

You could ask them, but I doubt they will really care at this point.

It's best to ask questions if you're unsure. I've trained a few people in my department and it generally worries me if people don't because I'm unsure if they fully understand the process.

Like every job, you need to know how the system works and you only gain that knowledge through experience and learning from mistakes. I would say about 1 month is needed to get use to the process but honestly they aren't expected a lot from you if you're a beginner. If they are, they're idiots that can pull their own weight.

I've been working in Sainsbury for about 3 years now and about to leave this year. It's not a hard job, you just need to get use to the equipment and some of the common situations and it's a breeze. Of course sometimes thinks can be different and knock you off your feet, figuratively, but just keep a cool head and don't take it personally. Like any job.

I can't take a break, I have to keep applying or i'll be unemployed for too long and it'll be harder than. I have taken breaks for like, 1 week before and it doesn't help as i just feel really guilty.

And i am taking a short course, it's not so much being bored, i cankeep myself amused, its the being skint, and just being unemployed generally.

I've already had my cv looked at by the jobcentre and NCS.But thanks anyway.

I've been in your situation and I was so wound up over not having a job that I felt completely lost and totally defeated, despite the most trivial application. I then got a job at a retail store as a temp, and it was good to earn a bit of cash.

Despite all of it, I kept my eye on the prize and didn't break away from what I thought I should be doing, which was a graduate career in finance.

Lo and behold, I bagged a job that explicitly stated that they wouldn't provide me with training, in an environment where people make you feel stupid for asking questions. It seems that fate isn't without a sense of irony, because I look back and wish that I'd asked way more questions during each of my interviews, and perhaps had a higher level of self esteem - like I deserved not just any job, but a job where I felt happy. This is easier said than done when looking back.

Nonetheless, I urge you to try to live for the present a little more, and see the positives of your situation. It's tough, I know - but just doing a little exercise, joining a club and being a volunteer will make you feel much happier about yourself (not just for soup kitchens and ****, but there's interesting volunteering options out there if you're willing to look for them). At the end of the day, a job isn't going to be the holy grail of happiness. Believe me, I thought it was going to be, but it wasn't. I've had a very movie-esque epiphany of sorts, that life is about knowing yourself and precisely who and what you want to be, and worrying less about what you should and shouldn't be.

EWTD regulation opt-out only allows you too work more than 48 hours a week. You cannot opt out of daily or weekly rest periods.

Opting out allows you to do, as an example, 5*12 hour shifts but you still have to have 11 hours between shifts and take a weekly (longer) break.

The senior manager was entirely correct to aend you home after 18 hours and to point out that daily and weekly rest periods are required.

Also what sector is the job in as there may be further restrictions either in law, other regulation or as part of the contract.

Posted from TSR Mobile

It's frustrating that is the case. I'm smart enough to realise that nobody can do 18+ hour shifts constantly without having serious effects on health. Byt doing them on random days where required - that should be allowed. Being told what you aren't capable of is merely a challenge I want to face. The day I first did a 14h shift - management pulled me to the side and asked me what the hell I was doing, I simply said there was work to do and I wanted to prove them wrong - that it is possible. Now I can randomly do those 14hrs without issue. My manager eventually stopped saying anything to me about it - knowing full well what I was capable of. She obviously cared - no doubt.

Either way - the sector was investment banking. A career path known for long hours.

Also, cheers for the response. I guess I just need to look from the perspective of management.

It's silly though - I'm resigning from this job. Yet I still want to do "extreme" hours!

Hello there, let me start by introducing myself.

I'm Craig and I'm soon to finish my degree in mathematics. I am absolutely hating it and have come to accept over the three years of my degree that i'm not 'smart.' I am studying maths at a good top 20 university purely from hard graft at a levels and through these three years. I'm scraping a 2:1.

Now I've been feeling depressed all this year when considering my future career, I have no desire to work in any finance related career and am not particularly creative either.

I come from a very sporty background having been top 20 in england for tennis as well as top 10 in squash at u16 level. So i guess I have the option to go down a sporty career but I feel I want to make a difference

Having really dug deep to examine the skills and interests I have, I wondered if it was possible to still pursue a successful career within the psychology sector.

My interest in psychology has come from having an autistic brother, which I have been charged with responsibility for the past three years. I also spend a lot of time with my sister who has had deep bouts of depression and I have helped her through it...

Now I have absolutely no qualifications in psychology. No a level, no university credits. Barely any writing practice over the past five years (maths degree, maths, further maths, i.t a levels). Am I merely dreaming of getting into psychology with no realistic chance?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I started what I believed was a full time,...

I started what I believed was a full time, permanent position as a writer for a newspaper.

I was e-mailed an offer of employment to which I replied back to happily confirm.

However, it seemed my “dream” job was too good to be true. I heard horror stories of lack of payment from this company and complete disinterest in the staff.

On my first day, I was not asked for my bank details, National Insurance details what so ever. Infact, I went and gave the details to the finance assistant.

It’s nearing my first month this up coming week and I decided to leave. I told the managing editor who told me, that I would have to work out a four weeks notice?! Even though I’m told by a union representative that it would be one week because I’m within my first month.

BUT

I have not signed a contract so I don’t need to give a notice, do I?

Since I started there on the 17th of April, I was not shown or given a contract until yesterday when it was thrust into my hands.

Even then, I didn't sign it and the guy took it off me. He continually kept repeating that I HAD to work four weeks' notice, end of.

There is also a major concern from others who I have spoken to who've said that he takes away National Insurance contributions but doesn't pay them on hence one past employee said she was having conversations with the tax man about this.

The contract of employment they sent me via email confirming wages, start date I’m told is sufficient to help me recoup my wages they should give to me if they refuse to. In that e-mail, it doesn't say anything about working four weeks notice.

I’m dreading going to work because it’s an intimidating culture and I fear they will try to get me to a sign the contract that says four weeks notice!

I’m incredibly stressed as the managing editor and I had a meeting which were heated and he got quite strong and aggressive.

Kind regards

Job Application Question Help

From this, as from most application forms, I...

From this, as from most application forms, I would summise that the employer basically is trying to find out if you actually give a sh*t... That is basically the golden question for any employer so keep that in mind when answering them and show them that you do.

Before concerning yourself with your form, just consider this for a few minutes. A local government / council plays a massive part in what it's basically like to live and work in the area. To illustrate this and the scale of the impact a council potentially has, I've copied and pasted the following from a website that is central to Northern Ireland... The geography is irrelevant - it's merely to briefly demonstrate the huge variety of functions that councils can carry out.

"Councils have a wide range of powers and duties. These include direct, representative and consultative functions.

Powers and duties

All Northern Ireland councils work within the powers conferred (bestowed) on them by various pieces of legislation. They also have certain added ceremonial functions. For example, they can confer freedom of the city or borough on distinguished people.
District council functions can be divided into three areas:

direct

representative

consultative

Direct functions

Direct functions enable councils to provide a wide range of public services in areas such as:

recreation

environmental health

waste management

street cleansing

tourism

economic development

consumer protection

the enforcement of building regulations

litter prevention

provision of cemeteries

the issuing of miscellaneous licences

dog control

Representative functions

Representative functions permit councils to nominate representatives to sit as members of various statutory bodies established to administer regional services such as:

education and library services

health and social services

drainage services

fire protection

Consultative functions

Consultative functions allow councils to represent the views of their population on the way in which regional services are operated throughout each district. This consultative role covers functions such as:

planning

roads

water

conservation

These are centrally administered but where there is an obligation - either by statute or by voluntary agreement - district councils will be consulted about proposals affecting their area."

See what I mean? Looking at that lot, what do you think about it? Do you think they are important? Do you think they are vital to the smooth running of the wider society in which we live? You don't have to go crazy but show them that you have actually considered what they do and what you feel you may enjoy or what you think will be hard about working there and WHY! Give one or two brief examples if you can.

Using examples are generally a huge plus when filling out applications. It's all very well just making a statement but if you have "evidence" to back it up, it gives a point to what your saying and shows you're not just telling them useless statements that you think they want to read. I know you didn't ask for help with the rest of the form as a whole but I feel that picking up on one or two issues that may be affecting your area when telling them your views on their role will show you have taken some sort of interest and are trying to engage with their question in a similar way that one would use examples to back up any statements on positive traits they have or what they could bring to the organisation etc. etc. or when describing previous experience.

One last thing.... It's always useful to have a little read through their website to get a feel for what they're all about and get a feel for their priorities or how they do things. If you find anything which underpins "core values" or that sort of thing - you're onto a winner and can maybe sneakily shoehorn some similar aspect of that into your own answer.

Hope that helps you somewhat and good luck :-)

You should contact the Financial Services Authority (FSA), who are the regulating body, and ask them. That is the only way you will get a correct answer. In any case take the degree - it didn't do John McVicar any harm did it?

I see your point and I agree. Surely there's two sides to every argument, though? What if employers see my CV and think, "oh, he was there for half a year, he's probably good, let's get him in for an interview".

The employers that will instantly assume I was an idiot with anger issues (or something else that made me unemployable) aren't the ones I'd want to work for anyway, I guess.

I'm not sure how good I'd be at controlling a class. I enjoyed teaching at university, but somewhere along the line I seem to have lost my confidence in myself...

You place too much faith in employers not make make assumptions. With so many applicants per place, they can afford to do so.

I can only answer part of it, regarding people coming into my university. And a bit about self-employed sales.

We've had a few of them come in, and sorry to sound negative, but nobody really listens (at least in my lectures). A few people take the leaflets, most go into bags and bins and as far as I know, nobody has taken it up. Paying to go volunteering isn't something most people will do unless their parents will pay for the trip (I assume it's one of these companies that charges you £3000 to go and paint a school in Tanzania or something), and consequently it's a very, very hard sell. You'll probably struggle to sign anyone up on the day, but you might have a chance of someone thinking about it and coming back a few weeks later.

The problem is, this isn't selling a pencil. It's selling a massive financial commitment, and these days people are far more likely to go online to do their research when looking into this kind of thing. Cold leads are very, very difficult to convert into high-value sales. Saying that, although I'd never consider paid-for volunteering, if I was planning something like it, I'd rather speak to someone who had done it before. So that's a positive point you'll have over others in the same job.

Have you checked the commission structure? Would you have to sign people up there and then, or would it be more a case of relying on people mentioning your name if they sign up later? Self-employed sales always rings a few alarm bells for me, because companies tend to do this when they're unsure whether the sales agent will generate enough income to cover minimum wage. I ran a sales team many years ago (selling an easier product than this) and all my agents were self-employed, commission-based, and sometimes they'd make £0 all week. Travel expenses didn't always cover the full trip either, so sometimes people would lose their time and their money.

It might be worth trying it out for a while - I can only speak from my own experience, and you can always quit if you're having no luck.

Thanks for this reply mate, a real help in deciding what to do. Sorry I didnt thank you earlier.

I decided not to go for it!...and the hunt goes on!

Hey,

So I'm applying for a job and it asks the usual questions but I'm a bit stumped by two of them.

The first one is an example of 'leadership of equality and diversity' but I'm not really sure how to prove it? It's not as if I've worked at the UN :|

The second question is 'actively listened' but I'm not sure how to prove this either? I obviously do listen to people but they want something that happened and what I did etc.

I'm not asking for specific ideas, just a little bit of help!

Thanks,

hi, I have been dealing with two different...

hi, I have been dealing with two different recruitment agencies within the last two months. one of these is quite a big and recognised recruiter.... I applied for a specific role with the use of language skills- I was interviewed from the agency and told that my experience and language skills were matching the role. the employer was interested in my cv...so far I was promised an interview with the employer. Well...I am still awaiting after a month but in the meantime the agency updates me regularly about any vacancies which I am not interested in. The agent, that interviewed me, never had the professionalism to call me back. So, if a multimillionaire recruiter does this, what we can expect from others... . Agencynumber2 I was contacted by an agent (local recruiter from Midlands) about a specific role I applied for, This is what happened: The first call: I was interviewed and asked for a second telephone :)interview + a copy of my passport. Day 2: The phone rings just before the appointment, "Sorry can we arrange the appointment for tomorrow at the same time as I am busy?," the professional agent asked. "Yes, that is fine", I answered without any doubt. Day 3: "Sorry, I do not deal with interviews as my colleague M does, so she will call you back tomorrow at the same time", the professional agent said. Obviously, I couldn't say anything else and accepted Day 4: The phone rings before the appointment and I am not available so the famous M leaves the following message, " I have been told from XX colleague about you and the appointment that we have later. I am sorry to say that I wont be able to interview you at that time; if you can call me back and I will arrange another appointment for you?" I ended this story by not calling this agency as I think they are just trying to hold their targets and personal jobs but at the end of the day I do not think these people will last long. What I believe that rules (law)should be tightened for agencies to use candidates details. However, I really hope that the professional agent will look at this forum and might realise that sooner or later he will be in my same position.

My brother (name withheld) is one of those people...

My brother (name withheld) is one of those people who is always applying for new jobs but keeps getting me to fill in the forms because I'm more articulate and type faster. At the moment he's applying to Aldi (see here: https://www.careers.aldirecruitment.co.uk). There have been so many "Server errors" it's driven me crazy; every time I want to do any of a long list of routine application-editing things, I have to save, log out and log in again.

But the most appalling aspect of the design is the reason I'm posting here, in case I'm missing a workaround someone here knows (because, when I googled for insights into it, quite a few TSR pages came up, which at least proved there have been many Aldi applicants here). All sections are now "complete", but we've not submitted it because, while calling itself complete, the section on Work History doesn't visibly contain any of the information we put in, whether I click on "View and Edit" or "Review and Print". This is a fault unique to that section. Does anyone know how to get information onto it and make it stay?

Presumably any information that actually gets stored in the application can be edited until it's submitted. I hope so; I need to correct one of the dates. If we're starting over, that should be no problem.

Well after having done 3 years of chemistry and management, I can say this is sound advice. I have managed to secure a job with Deloitte, but I am pretty sure I could have done that anyway if I did straight chemistry. By second and third year I could really notice that I was doing less chemistry as labs and exams began to rely more and more on subjects I haven't covered in as much detail as my peers. I end up not even going to my business lectures as I view them as a waste of time because chemistry is so much more difficult (though often more enjoyable). Anyway, if I could go back to myself 3 years ago I would have just stayed on the straight chem ...
I graduated From Newcastle University in July with a 2:1, I then applied in October for Graduate Medicine. I was so happy to get interviews for Imperial and Warwick and absolutely devastated when I was rejected for both. I've been working as an agency HCA since my graduation but since my rejections I've been feeling very low. I don't think a lot of people realise how much sacrifice you have to make for Medicine and how difficult and heartbreaking it really is to be rejected over and over again.

I feel that a lot of the replies that you've had have been very critical to tell you to "Fix yourself" as I don't think they realise how much it affects a person's self esteem. I have had a multitude of interviews within the NHS and have been rejected each time. It's so demoralising. I, myself have lost complete confidence in my interview skills and I'm terrified of failing another interview and being rejected from anything else.

I wish I could tell you something absolute. Honestly, I'm as lost as you are right now. But I feel a little better knowing that I'm not alone. Don't give up hope. I'm still struggling towards the dream, as are you and many other people out there.

PM if you want to talk.

Have you thought about starting a beauty blog? Some girls do it as hobbies but a lot of women take it up as a serious job, as you can get paid for advertising products on your blog if you can draw in a big audience. I know a few girls such as LLYMLRS have achieved social media representative positions within some cosmetics firms through having a blog. Of course, this is quite rare but if you were to try for a couple of cosmetics jobs, it would be good to show that you've taken an active interest in cosmetics through your blog.

A friend of mine is having some issues at their job. They're really happy with it, but they've been required to do two things. By law, they have to have a 20 minute lunch break, but the amount of work they get requires them to work through lunch or have a short lunch or go home late.

They don't mind this, but because of a legal requirement for a 20 minute lunch break they have to put on their time sheet that they took a lunch break while not actually taking a break.

So they work through lunch but don't get paid for it because the law is trying to help them.

Any experience here in dealing with things like that?

I am asked to write references for students and this is her polite way of telling you that she doesn't know what to write. My own device for it is "I don't want to miss anything out, so...". I ask them for bulletpoints, mind, and then include/exclude as I see fit.

I have known flo[proactiv] for three years, in my capacity as her lecturer and personal tutor at Redbrick College. During this time she has consistently shown herself to be a diligent and bright young woman with a keen sense of responsibility toward her studies and her extra-mural activites. I am aware that she holds elected positions in a number of student societies and have been impressed by how she manages to combine an obvious dedication to these with the mature attitude she brings to the classroom.

Flo[proactiv] is a highly likeable young woman and unsurprisingly popular among her peers. While always modest, she has a firm sense of her own mind and values and a willingness and capacity to defend these in intelligent discussion. My experience in instructing her in the use of the SPSS package confirmed her as someone who is ready to listen and quickly able to master new skills.

Becuse of her intelligence, people-skills, time-management skills and maturity, I have no hesitation in endorsing Flo[proactiv]'s application for this position. I am confident she would be a valuable addition to the team at your (or any) organisation.

basically, there was a group of 15 people and you go to the place, they ask you for a photocopy of your id and the original and they double check it and stuff. Then you go into the room which is classroom size with chairs arranged in a horse shoe shape. The interviewer stands in the middle and you get given forms to fill in to choose when you want to work, what stores you're avaliable for etc. Then they collect these forms, your cv and a the copy of your id.

Then the actual interview beings. It starts off with them asking you what you know about zara/indetix - so just stick your hand up and give them some general facts and figures (i can send some notes i made on the company if you want, just pm me). Then you will watch a short video on indetix and then the interviewer will ask for feedback and just basically ask more questions about zara/indetix, so it's good to know as much as possible about them (the interview is more about indetix than zara tbh).

After that, the interviewer gave us scenarios such as "a customer has asked you for opinion on a dress she looks awful in but she thinks she looks amazing." what would you tell her etc. No right or wrong answer imo but good to back up your answer with a good reason. Then she asked that the same said customer came back the next day with the ripped dress as it had been too small for her. The customer is livid and wants a full refund, how would you deal with this customer? Those kind of questions.

Some other people have mentioned they were put in small groups and asked to come into design an outfit for a celebrity etc.

Also at the interview, a big emphasis is put on what is on trend for this summer, what's in for next autumn/winter so make sure to do good research on trends/designers etc.

And yeah that's about it, my advice is just to try and say as much as possible, just have your hand up at all times but not come across as annoying if that's possible.

If you want any more advice or some notes i made on zara, just pm me.

Good luck!

hey please can i have your notes or can anyone help me pleaseeee

Not sure it creates stress. Better time management needed perhaps.
However, my part time job I found came to a sudden end 2 months in which I was planning to use to support myself throughout the MSc. Running out of money was a huge stress.

Smaller companies usually means more responsibility but often means being overworked and a faster pace and sometimes with less pay and next to no benefits.

Large companies means its harder for you to make an impact but it also means you normally don’t need to work silly hours and get all the benefits that come with working in a larger company.

Opportunities to progress your career is better in a larger company but a smaller company with more responsibility will get you a better footing in a larger company.

Larger companies look better on a CV simply because of how big and thus potentially successful they look and then there’s the brand recognition. Future employers both at the same level as the large company or smaller will have the mentality "If this guy is good enough to work at ... company he’s certainly an attractive match for working here". Sometimes it doesn’t go as far as that but can still be an encouragement to the potential employer.

With all the above mentioned I would consider a company with 300 employees still big so some of the points about small companies will not apply so much.

I just tried to pos rep you but apparently I've rated you recently so wasn't able to!
I completely agree with so much of what you've said. I've worked for large companies in the past by my job now is in a small company (approx 25 people overall but really only 5 in my department), and there is a lot more responsibility and it's much faster-paced - all good things! I'm lucky in that the company is doing very well and is continuing to grow and grow, so it's a good position to be in :)

@M1011: Are you thinking of Aldi's Management scheme? That is highly paid with long hours but is very different to Finance :)

@Charlie:
It's not wise to take other people's experiences and expect the same will happen to you. All I can say, try and get to the interview stages, that's when you start to get a feel for the company. Also remember, at that stage the company will be trying to sell themselves to you and it's the best time to ask all the questions on your mind (training support, progression opportunities etc.)

You've also missed out Debenhams. They are a huge retailer in the UK. Can't say what it is to work for their Finance department, my role hasn't started yet :)
