Yah i can see what you are saying, I actually looked into a distance learn BSc maths and Open Stats Degree from the Open University but am in two heads about it i can complete it up to 16 years :). I would also be the only person in the school to do the extended diploma so the sci department are really happy for me to do it (tables). The school are fine with it but the exams officer hates me (putting them in debt). As i said i don't sleep much so i work through the night

First of all, thank you for having a sensible debate about this. I really don't agree with what you hope to do as I don't deem it sensible but I can't decide what you do in life as it is your life to lead.

If you're aiming high (and I presume you are from how much you're willing to take on) then see how your GCSE and AS results go and consider applying for Oxbridge or another Russell Group university instead of an OU degree. On the other hand and from what you've said there, the school and you seem keen to do this L3 Science then maybe you could always consider that instead of science A Levels. It's all down to what you feel you would be happy doing for the next two years. I don't really know much about you, how academic you are and your goals in life so please take my advice with a pinch of salt and consider all of your options very carefully.

Hello, I vaguely remember visiting this thread a long time ago and find the need to come back here. The academic front of my life has been a mess and I want to set things straight. I'm a mature student who wants to pursue journalism. I'm sure English Language will be needed for my chosen career path and I enjoy the subject as well. As for the other two subjects, I'm confused. I'm covering the course on private basis, and I can manage almost any subject on my own. I've picked biology and chemistry, as I'm most familiar with these subjects but I'm not sure that it's a good option. Biology is getting very tedious and frustrating, but I can carry on with it if I have to in order to get good grades. I was thinking of taking sociology instead of biology, and maybe media studies if that helps as I've been told chemistry is not going to help me even though I love the subject. Then I'm told that the art subjects I want to swap my science subjects with are 'soft' and 'less preferable' by most universities. I want to keep my subjects limited to three to reduce the workload and cover my course as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Any help would be highly appreciated!

I'd recommend doing AS biology this year and if you like it then keep it without the further maths. If you decide you prefer the physics-y side then drop it at AS and pick up further maths.

That's what I did.

I started with biology, chemistry, maths and physics AS in the first year then decided I wanted to study physics so in the second year chemistry A2 maths A2 physics A2 and further maths AS. The way I worked my modules I have C1-4, FP1-2 and M1-3 so well set up for science courses.

Stats/decision maths modules are neither here nor there.
Any computing/stats needed will be taught from scratch and Universities* say pure/mechanics are better preparation for their science/maths courses :)
The reason I say this is because with a full A level in further maths you will probably have to do some stats or decision modules when they are not so useful, especially in your situation so just doing the AS makes sense, leaving room to be indecisive in your first year.

I hope that helps!

*Cambridge, in particular, say up to fp1 and m3 are basically essential. The do run a course for people who haven't taken those modules but it's run like a revision session at a really fast pace. Better to learn it well now.

EDIT: Also, taking 4 A2s mean Cambridge, if you apply there, will probably give you an offer of AAAA. If you take the route I have you get an offer of A*AA since you are doing 3 A2s and 2 AS :) Makes your life a little easier at no disadvantage.
(Assuming getting 90%,80%,80% is easier than 80%,80%,80%,80% - which I think it is!)

I obviously haven't done A-Levels yet but I think 4As is easier.

Hello all,

I am in desperate need of help with regard to exam entry in 2013/2014.

I am a home learning student currently studying a Maths GCSE (OCE), and four A levels- English, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology (all AQA).
The governments changes to the exam timetables has left me in a stasis, and I am finding it hard to make sense of some things.
I need to take the GCSE and all AS and A level exams asap in hope of being able to apply for university in 2014, for start in September 2014.

A. Is this possible? as There are no January exams.

B. Are there private exam centers? to do exams January next year?

C. If I cant do any of this, do you have any idea of the fastest route to take the exams and apply for university?

D. Because I am a mature student using UK Open Learning can I qualify for funding/fast tracking or help from government?

I hope you can help, I apologize for any ignorance, I am basically desperate to get into a university for September 2014 on clearance if possible. If not, the year after :(
Any information whatsoever would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your time

Exact same situation as you when choosing my A-levels but in reverse. Thought I'd take on English Lit, Law, History & Computing wasn't sure what I wanted to go in to after education. Year 11 goes on turns out I start to enjoy maths and the sciences. Picked up my GCSE results on results day and changed from my original choices to Physics,Chemistry,Maths & Computing. A year later recieved A's in my January exams and had a good June series as well. And nor do I mind revising these subjects (bar computing). So go for what your heart is telling you because believe moi as I'm learning with computing if you're less than 100% sure about the subject (I chose computing as my fourth/non important) you probably won't be motivated to revise and do well. I wouldn't base your career on "getting in a career easily" because you should enjoy what you do .

Hope I cleared a few things up.

Yeah that's really hopeful like I am 100% sure I will enjoy most of english and history but not 100% sure I will enjoy 100% of physics :S

I think when I get my results like you it will be clearer for me :)

Hi, everyone.

I've just finished my GCSE exams and want to prepare for Sixth Form. I was wondering what kind of equipment I will need. For example, the school would provide exercise books for students in year 11. Do they provide exercise/notebooks in year 12, or do you have to bring your own? What kind of stationary do you recommend for revision - highlighters, folders, or something else?

Thanks.

I don't know of any sixth forms that provide exercise books. You generally bring your own, and highlighters will be good for revision, and folders are good to keep your organised.

You can't go far wrong with stationary!

Don't do maths then. Economics may be ok if you get an A in GCSE maths, but you will really struggle with AS maths without a good A or A*. Pretty much all of A level is algebra and vectors! Maths becomes conceptually much more difficult and you are required to fully understand what you are doing rather than learning methods or equations by rote.
I believe economics maths is a bit less complicated but there is more statistics etc. This would be fairly simple for someone who can learn equations and methods even if they don't fully understand them.
Did you do a language at GCSE? Sorry to keep mentioning it, but it would definitely be a good subject to consider doing to A level.

i have done gcse spanish and hope to get an A. I also next year im doing gcse urdu which i hope to get an A*. i didnt enjoy spanish at gcse so i dont think i would enjoy it at a level, especially because i hated grammer.

You will be struggling to get into a uni course to study Biology or Chemistry without Chemistry A level, and struggle to get into Physics without Maths + Physics to A level. Most science uni courses ask for at least two science A levels.
Basically, switch sixth form. You say you are boarding already - why not consider another boarding school somewhere else in the country with a better range of subjects? Also, there should be other colleges nearby which offer all the sciences - I can't believe a sixth form doesn't offer core subjects such as maths and the sciences!

Hi there :)

I would recommend looking over all the schools of thought e.g. Marxism/Neo-Marxism, Functionalism, Feminism and Late Modernists/Postmodernism, as well as Left/Right Realism, the New Right etc. Look at what these theories state on their own, and then read on how they apply to different areas such as crime and education.

In terms of having different topics and theories, yes, Sociology is similar to Psychology. Research Methods overlap too, but that is where the similarities end. Psychology is much more scientific and individualistic, whereas Sociology is more qualitative and focuses on society on a whole. There is a lot to know, moreso than Psychology in my opinion, but the content is not difficult to grasp (I would say it is easier). You just need to be able to articulate yourself in the exams, as it isn't just a case of 5 A01 and 5 A02 points and that's that - it all needs to link in and cover a wide range of points.

If you work hard, both on subject content and on your exam skills, you should do well!

Well thank you that truely was an uplift :)

My experience in teaching suggests that few...

My experience in teaching suggests that few people who choose to drop out actually finish the course. It requires a lot of self-discipline to study on one's own. It can be a lonely experience trying to work without the support of friends and, dare I say it, teachers. There are many temptations to take it easy and not bother.

Once alone, If you are lucky you might just be offered a job that eventually leads somewhere; if unlucky, boredom and lounging around in bed or in front of the TV can seem attractive. Eventually this can lead to depression. This is perhaps more likely than a job offer in today's climate. I suggest you think carefully before you go this route.

Dropping out is very different from choosing to take a gap year when there is a definite and secure path ahead and life looks rosy.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

It really depends on what your work ethic is...

It really depends on what your work ethic is like.
Your teachers do try to prepare you for the giant jump in workload, and you cannot underestimate that. I did, and the first year of my A-levels were a problem. I didn't dedicate enough time to getting work done or studying and reading around the topics. I worked thinking "i was fine at GCSE's, i should be able to get along fine with this". Once you get behind on your studying, it's murder to catch up again, so for your sake, do not make the same mistake I did! Really go for it! Don't half-arse any homework or assignments, essays, coursework. Put every bit of effort you can into it, and in a couple of years time you should come away with a few very good qualifications! Well worth the effort, in my opinion :)

My dad, who's a biochemical scientist in pharmaceutical development, tells me that for him the jump from GCSE to A-level was more difficult than the jump from A-levels to university degree and his doctorate.

So as I'm sure many of you have done and suffered through I'm currently on the first page of my AQA EPQ.

I chose my EPQ title as "How have the technological advances in clothing affected sports performance and does it give an advantage to today’s athletes?".
Suicidal I know and it turns out I now have to find out what clothes they wore in 1912 and what these clothes were made of (trust me that's tricky) and now I immediately regret this title as I have no interest in fashion in general (I do like to dress nicely however). So I know I'm waffling now but any help AT ALL would help like anything please I'm begging.
Thanks

Hey,I'm currently at secondary school and I opted for Level 3 sports and AS drama, for college.I was also thinking of taking media studies or film studies into consideration and I was wondering which 1 is easier media or film studies ? thanks

okay so i've only just seen this, and to be honest my whole choice in what i wanted to do has changed completely i ended up falling in love with my courses and dropping law halfway through the year after getting a U in the first exam, but never the less, to answer your own question I love them both however film studies I find to be more essay writing, and media is more practical so in my view and experiences media has been easier, but i found my film studies exam much more easier as I knew what the questions where roughly going to be, however for media studies, the exam, like any other subject could've been about anything we had learnt over the year, overall i have preferred film studies, hope you make the right decisions for yourself, even though this reply is 6 months after you asked me, hahah!

cue cards and post it notes are useful around revision time but you don't need to worry about that yet

Hi there
Yes you will be able to go to uni with a BTEC extended diploma level 3 in business, coz thats exactly what ive just finished and im going to uni in september.

Personally, id say it is much easier than A levels (i did AS for a year, got bad results and switched to this).

When you start the course, you should be told by your teachers about the course or if it isnt, just ask them. The UCAS points is different for BTECs... heres a link to explain: http://www.ucas.com/how-it-all-works...ables/#btecqcf

Hi,

I'm applying for a September entrance to CCSS. I'm doing the fast track courses of Maths, Biology and Chemistry.

Has anyone studied there? What was your personal experience of the college?

I'm really interested in the extra curricular sports, but I don't know how seriously they take it? I'm hoping to be involved with gymnastics. I didn't see any reports about gymnastics in their newsletter though.

Thanks!

Hi, I have a few question.
I want to ask for my choice of subjects. Maths, Further Maths and Physics
Which should I study OCR,AQA and Edexcel?
I'm not familiar with this exam board as I have not taken any A Level before.
As I'm going to apply as a private candidate which exam board would be better?
What modules should study for too as I'm aiming to study compsci?

There's no advantage in admissions terms of taking one exam board over another. Maths, Further Maths, and Physics are a great set of A Levels for us. Either a language or computing would be fine as a fourth - although remember we only offer based on three A Levels.

Modules in Discrete Maths or Decision Maths are particularly useful, but we don't have any set requirements, beyond A Level Maths (or equivalent) being essential and Further Maths being strongly recommended as the best preparation for our courses.

Not sure about MEI specifically, but Further Maths is definitely accepted, even expected for Physics at those universities, I don't think Chemistry would be any different. Check the A-level subject requirements for the courses you're thinking of applying to, to be extra sure. If you're hating biology, then it would seem slightly foolish to keep on going at it, and I think continuing with Further Maths rather than trying to learn Physics over the summer is a more reasonable and more straight-forward option. How strong do you think your maths is?

I know that you have to do chemistry and maths and then the 3rd subject generally should be like physics, biology, further maths, economics, etc. Maths is definitely my strongest subject, I quite enjoy aswell. I've been told by others aswell to maybe only learn some of the AS physics course and do alot of other further reading around aspects of chemistry, biology and physics and then put that on my personal statement because uni's like to see an interest in science. So I'll probably end up doing that, but I'll ask one of my teachers. Thanks :)

However if you want to be able to use a computer then my a means do IT applied. I think that if you want to go into business or teaching that you would get more benefit from IT as on a daily bases you need to be able to use the software such as database, spreadsheet even web design; which are all taught in the IT spec. Which is unlike computing which teaches you how to make the programmes used on a computer also computing is only really useful and applied if you are considering a career in the field.

It's said that HEFCE have worked out the equivalent A level grades for any given number of points scored on the IB diploma. I read somewhere today that 35 points, according to HEFCE, equates to AAB at A level. I can't find any equivalency tables on HEFCE's website though. Can anyone help he find this info?
P.S. This has nothing to do with UCAS Tarrif points, so it's unhelpful to just look up UCAS points for IB diploma scores and then add up how many A levels you need to match that.

I say sometimes, not always tedious - I chose to take it to A2 so I do find it interesting most of the time! Last year I did Cicero, which was pretty fun, and Ovid's Amores, which was amazing in parts but there were certain poems which weren't that interesting due to the slightly odd selection on the syllabus. Then the usual language (which I prefer and am also a bit better at). For GCSE, I only studied a portion of the Aeneid, which, to be fair, was brilliant to analyse, but felt just a bit isolated without reading the rest. It was a while ago now though so I can't give you a proper idea of what I thought about it at the time.

She took English, Maths, Chemistry and Biology at AS and now takes English, Chemistry and Biology. She was also a straight A* GCSE student and I think at AS she found the workload was no problem. If it's going to cause issues with your parents, that's probably another factor worth considering more than workload!

Haha yes, sorry, I didn't mean it that way
Hm so I should find out what texts my school's doing next year...
Oh, we're doing the Aeneid, its a bit from Book 12 (I think)- the death of Turnus. I didn't not enjoy it, but I wouldn't say I particularly enjoyed it.

Is that single maths?
Ah ok, that's encouraging. My brother, although probably not intentionally, makes it seem as if I'll be completely inundated with work...
Thing is, I'm already conceding on the Maths front- I'm definitely doing double to A2, whereas I was considering doing the same as your friend, with English instead of double Maths. They're so frustrating
And how many essays do you do in English?

@SharminaSyeda, thanks, that's what I feel too, its just a matter of persuading my parents that...

If you find physics hard now you will honestly find it a nightmare at A level cos it gets a lot harder.
Be prepared maths and further maths is a lot of exams and also some universities don't consider them as two separate subjects!
Chemistry is good, not too tricky but you need to be quite interested in it! I don't do economics but I think it involves essays and can be quite hard and a bit boring. Personally I think to stick to subjects you've done at GCSE and better the devil you know cos it would be awful to start something like economics and absolutely hate it .
Geography has social science elements to it but it is really interesting and once you get the hang of it, it is quite easy :)
I'm trying to squeeze revision in between, but wanted to know if this counts as extenuating circumstances, as I know this is definitely impacting my exam prep and is going to continue to do so.
Obviously I did do some studying leading upto this week, but I still won't be at the same level I could have been. I couldn't find anything on the OCR websites.

Thanks again, very informative and helpful! I still have while to think about it, Engineering has been thrown at me many times but I'm still not sure what is involved. I have heard things such as 'design bridges and train-tracks' which appears to me a little dull. I have considered actuarial science - looking in the financial area in an insurance company doing calculations etc but after discussing with my brother who is similar minded (currently doing Maths, further maths, chemistry and economics), he opened my mind into the world of economics (as I am currently doing business studies, in contrast I feel BS is perhaps a little more closed whereas economics is more global based - which appealed to me more and grabbed my interest (sadly economics is not offered to me at my school as a GCSE which would have perhaps helped me decide whether Economics would suit me as an A-level). I am just afraid in relationships to essay there would be ALOT of writing in economics and if you take a look at my bottom five GCSE's (enterprise, english literature , photography, geography and english language) they are all quite heavily written based. Whereas I prefer the subjects with a more 'direct answer' - such as maths and science. Despite this I feel by having a subject which is slightly more written based which still relates to maths and science (such as dragonkeeper mentioned earlier). By taking Economics I would offer universities a more developed and multi-talented approach in what I could offer. Do you feel it would be a complete incorrect move for me to take Economics as an A-level?

If you are interested in anything vaguely financially related/ business/ economics etc. then economics would be a good subject to take. It would show some essay writing skills (although apparently the essays are more straightforward and to do with logical thinking rather than the waffling on about a load of made up rubbish we had to do at GCSE english) as well as showing that you are interested in the subject. It is well regarded by universities (unalike business studies) and so would look good even if you changed your mind in the end and went down the engineering/ science route.
Again, I would recommend doing 5 subjects. This would allow you to do all the subjects you enjoy/ need and keep your options open. Also, if you find that you are struggling in one subject or don't enjoy it any more you still have the option to drop it, whereas if you only took 4 subjects it would be more difficult to drop and switch into a new subject.
How about: Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Economics?

Well I remember the easier units (C1, Biology Unit 1 ect.) but I will still need to go over them. That means its just under a month per unit to learn and revise. How long in a normal college do they spend teaching a unit? Its around 2 units a term right?

Even if I go all out zombie mode, what sort of grade will I be looking at? Are A's still a possibility?

I can't really tell whether you'd be able to get an A and it all depends on how you structure your time, although it may be possible.

In terms of actually starting, I'd say begin at the start of august (or even mid august) depending on what you're doing in the summer. If you have nothing to do though, the earlier you start, the better.

In my college, for maths we would cover a chapter a week which was pretty fast paced. I didn't (don't) do biology so I can't really comment for that but it seems it consists of memorising and learning exam technique which I guess is possible.

It seems a steep hill but I believe it's possible to get A's. :D

Just wanted to say that those considering to do an EPQ should do it. But if you're planning to do it in A2,bi recommend that you try and do it and get it out of the way so you don't need to battle it out with exams. Also, doing an EPQ is very cool for uni applications because admission teachers may see you as not the average a-level student lol.
Take the risk, it's worthwhile :)

Well, I am currently at a school where I have been offered 3 of my 4 desired subjects, but the 4th is really important. I would like to apply to another sixth form, however, most if not all have closed their admissions... Are there any that would look at your results on GCSE results day and admit you based on that?

Hi! I personally do not think that there are any sixth forms that would enrol you by just seeing your GCSE results and on the actual admission date as the whole admission and interview process where they offer you a conditional offer has surpassed. However, you could perhaps talk to your current school and express the importance of your final A-level subject (perhaps as it will help you for your future career path/university?) and perhaps see if they agree to maybe replace it with another of your subjects. Or alternatively, you could talk to one of the other sixth forms before enrolement day and see if they still have space to accept you...

Good Luck!

Hiya, I did an EPQ, and it was really useful for my application! I wrote about it in my personal statement, but I didn't actually get asked on it when I went to interview, which I was a little annoyed about. However, when offers started coming through, I and many other people at my school got offers which were a grade lower than standard offers because we did an EPQ. I would say that it doesn't particularly matter if it's in a subject related to your chosen degree path, as the skills you gain are more important and you should emphasise this in your PS :)

Don't stress :) that should be the last of your worries, be confident in yourself and if you feel that your exams have gone well then keep reminding yourself of that because in the end you might achieve what you were hoping for?

I am also in the same situation as you however I'm hoping to study Law :) If it helps one of my A2 exams that I took in January of this year, I received a very high B grade one mark off an A I kept telling myself I've probably done really bad due to lack of revision but I was really surprised by my grade.

So basically don't worry and not saying that you will but if by any chance you do miss a grade or so by a few UMS then you might still be accepted by your firm and/or insurance choice. Since they raised tuition fee's some universities could be more lenient towards students.

Thank you all for your comments :) I was learning sociology during my gcses and I thought that sociology and psychology were similar, and although I'm put off studying sociology I always thought that psychology was better option wise. I want to study something based on human behaviour and hopefully have a career in it so chose English Lit, Biology, History and Psychology for a levels but I don't know whether to swap psychology for maths and which subjects will be better to study at university?

In my opinion, although Psychology is hard in terms of amount of content, it's easy in terms of difficulty if you're science-minded. It's kind of as though in year 12, most people are either on the A/B boundary, or the E/U boundary if they aren't good enough at scientific reasoning.

If you want to study psych at Uni, then maths and biology are desirable (not Psychology A Level so much, strangely) although Psychology A Level will give you a good understanding of human behaviour, and related studies, to help you get an idea about a career in Psychology.

If you were feeling particularly daring, you could always take Psychology as an extra self-studied AS, along with Bio, History, English and Maths.
Then, say if you were particularly struggling with maths and history and got AABDD (or something like that) at the end of AS, you could continue with Psychology and drop the other two, or if all goes well continue with Biology, Maths and one other, but have Psychology AS behind you to demonstrate your general understanding of Psychology.

If you're not up for taking an extra AS, I would take maths if maths comes naturally to you (many people who got an A at GCSE struggled with A Level maths at my school, the only people who really excelled and got As were the naturally gifted maths students, or those who put in a hell of a lot of time) or Psychology if you're more science/analysis minded.

Remember, no matter what the subjects, AAA or BBB looks much better than AAE, so pick things you're good at!

The basic rule, especially for your 3rd subject where the other two are academic, is that an A in Media is much better than an E in Chemistry.

Ultimately, whichever subjects you choose, you'll be fine to study Psych at most Unis with A Level Biology.

Hey,

I've just finished my AS year, and if I don't get the grades needed I won't be able to carry on onto A2, so I just need a back-up plan if I don't get the grades (which is very likely).

So my back-up plan is to study the "BTEC Extended Diploma Business - Level 3" at College, this September. It will take 2 years to complete.

Relevant info' about the course:

!You have a number of assignments to complete and these will be assessed throughout the course. Depending on the number of credits you complete, you will be awarded one of the following qualifications:
180 credits: BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (equivalent to three A levels)
These are all nationally recognised qualifications.".

When I complete this course, will this be enough for me to go onto a course at Uni'?

For example, I'm looking at a course for Uni' now and the entry requirements are A-Level: BBB OR BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma: DDM.

Does this mean I have to get a DDM in the "BTEC Extended Diploma Business - Level 3" (along with other entry requirements) to get onto that course?

Sorry I'm just confused about all this..

Also as it says it's equivalent to 180 credits, does that mean 180 UCAS points? 'cause I have already been confirmed a C in AS Business and AS ICT which both total up to 80 UCAS points. So if I complete the BTEC course, I'll have 260 UCAS points overall?

Please someone explain!

Basically, my main question is, when I complete the BTEC Extended Diploma Level 3 in Business, will I be able to go Uni' with that achieved?

Thank you.

http://www.covcollege.ac.uk/courses/...e.aspx?@ID=854

Firstly, if your Uni says they accept the Extended Diploma with DDM then it will certainly be enough for you to apply, whether you get in or not is a different question - just as A level students may have the required entry grades they still may not be offered a place. However, you will limit your options because not all unis accept them. Some unis say it 'depends on circumstances', or they will accept them but with a combination of A Levels as well. It really depends on University and course, for example, it's unlikely you would be able to apply for Law with a BTEC in Business. (again, it is dependent on universities though)

Secondly, credits are the types of marks used in BTEC awards - they are not UCAS points. To see how many points a BTEC extended diploma is worth go onto the UCAS Tariff table and see on there - it's normally quite a lot as it is supposed to be equivalent to three a levels.

Add your AS grades onto your BTEC diploma UCAS points and you will have a good points stance for university - however, again, some universities don't take into account points and base their offers solely on grades, so you need to be careful.

Lastly, a BTEC will get you into some universities, but as a general point, if you could re-take rather than take a BTEC I would recommend that. I have nothing against btecs at all, but Michael Gove is quickly eroding the validity of them and you don't want a qualification that in a years time is going to be deemed 'easy' or 'worthless' (as he has deemed the GCSE BTECS).

Apart from that, good luck if you do! It's certainly possible to to go uni with a btec, it's just a harder journey. You need DDM at least and an excellent personal statement as you will be competing for places with A Level students. (I know they are deemed equivalent, but again, Michael Gove and other people have said outright that they are not and this is inevitably going to be something bared in mind by admissions officers - whether they agree or not)

So it actually makes more sense for me to focus on business rather than Physics?
Then again, I have resat one of my Physics units and hope for a B (Or an A would be even better) and I also know I have the 88%ish for my A" practical exam in Physics already. Do you think these will alter it much?

If you just need one B then you're better off concentrating on Business, yes.

It may do, but again it would depend on specific UMS. It also depends on which subject you find easier.

I have read the OP but just wanted confirmation specific to the exam board CIE.

For an A* do you need in economics cie do you need 180UMS across the A2 units.

I looked at the grade thresholds on freeexampapers and xtremepapers and on the spec but there is no mention of this rule.

Can someone who has knowledge specific to CIE confirm for me please?

I'm just nearing the end of A2 and I studied maths, further maths, biology and psychology in case you were interested haha. For maths, I don't think you need to do a whole lot in the summer as there isn't much of a transition but it might be useful to make sure you can still differentiate and integrate! For biology, I would really just say to make sure you have all the key concepts from AS stored in your mind as they pop up nearly every lesson in A2 and the final biology exam for AQA (if that is your exam board) has a 25 mark essay question encompassing everything from the entire 2 years. Hope this helps. :)

So yeah, what it says on the tin. I obviously don't have my results back yet but I'm quietly confident I'll have my 5 C's. I took Maths (B), English, Additional Science, BTEC First in ICT (Double D*), a BTEC First in Sport (Double P), Spanish and Statistics (Which is a foundation course). The ones I'm definitely wanting to do are English Language and Politics.

Thanks in advance.

The A-levels are not too important, but the degree subject and university is, especially to become a high profile MP. Most have a degree from Oxbridge, in either PPE, History etc. Oxbridge allows them to make connections with other ambitious students to build the 'old boys network'. However to be a low key local MP you need to have a general grounding of the political system so A-level Politics might help, but also be a good people person. Willing to campaign for long hours, deal with tough questions, which you will not learn from A-levels. Experience shadowing your local MP during the summer or as an intern will be far more beneficial.

no problem, If I was defiently to choose one of the subjects I would go for chem, but the key thing with chemistry is that you have to work hard but the good thing with chemistry is that it gets more interesting the more you study it, the first hald of the year it was one of my worse subjects and biology was my faviourite now it has changed now I have been allowed to understand it in detail and apply it to everyday things. Key thing with choices is to also go with what you are good at and something that would lead you to something you would like to do in the future.

So I hat my Law4 Exam today, I did the critique essay first which went good and then I was supposed to do criminal law but accidently did the tort section. I realised half an hour before the exam ended and tried to answer abit of the first question on the right section. I need a D in this section to get a B overall. Do you think I'll even get that? I feel sooooooo stupid for answering the wrong one, don't know how it happened, please help me!

Its an easy mistake to make, well i looked it up at last year to get a D you needed 49 marks. So it could be possible if you do well in the essay and gain the a03 marks and then some on the case study question.
I don't think they cross mark the two sections so will probably chose the one you scored highest in.

yes you can re-sit a GCSE externally. Whether you have taken it before and/or cashed it in is irrelevant. You have to find an exam centre (any secondary school or college0 to accept you as a private candidate. You pay them, you take the exam. The exam boards have advice to private candidates on their websites but it all has to be organised through an exam centre.

My subjects drive me mental around exam time and i wouldn't be able to revise for them continually if i hated them.

Hey, I'm thinking about doing maths A level which I have been continuously told is very hard. I did only get a B in GCSE but I weren't motivated and never really tried hard. The things that I did bother listening too I did understand and have never really had a problem with maths, it's actually one of my favourite subjects. Im also doing English language and history. So shall I do it, or am I setting myself up for failure? How big is the jump for GCSE to A-level? Please help!

For GCSE I got a better mark than predicted, B instead of a D, and so I though I could do it for A-level. Nobody told me that it was hard, so I though I would be okay. When the year began (having done no revision what so ever during the summer holidays) I found it very hard! the jump is quite big. So throughout the whole year I found it so difficult to understand what it was about, eventually I achieved a U in C1 exam in January. But towards the end of the year, I was so determined to get a good mark. I revised a lot, and asked lots of question and in the end, the exams seemed quite easy.

I would say take it, if you ARE going to work hard. If you can't be bothered to do the work it is going to be VERY difficult!

But if you do take it in the end, I strongly advise you to do revision over the summer holiday before school resumes.

Hi,
I will be doing EPQ next year (i.e. year 12) but I still have no idea what I want to base it on. I thought that I should do something related to medicine since I want to go to medical school and become a doctor. However, is it necessary to have to choose a topic which is linked to your future career? Or are universities looking for a student who shows other interests and not just science and maths?
Thanks, any advice would be helpful.

I'd say as long as you're very interested in all of them you should be fine, what are you hoping to do after college?
I'm doing AQA Psychology and while there was a small amount of biology in the AS there wasn't anything that I felt I understood a lot better than those who hadn't taken Biology. For instance, there were scientific names and explanations, e.g. "antidepressant drugs block the action of an enzyme that breaks down serotonin", but it's entirely possible to just learn that as a sentence without knowing too much about enzymes etc. I can't speak for A2 yet, but for AS it's a nice pairing but not at all necessary :)

I'm just starting A2 Psychology with AQA and it's definitely my favourite subject. There is a lot of essay writing and studies to remember, but I do actually find most of the studies interesting so it's not so bad (except for memory. EVERY study in memory seemed to be super dull). Haven't taken Geography since year nine though so I couldn't compare the two. Could you take a few weeks of both and see which you prefer? I would recommend Chemistry as the second though; everyone I've spoken to says it is hard work but it's very achievable, you just have to keep powering on, and it's a strong subject if you want to go into nursing :)
