WAITWAITWAIT.

So make around 9 illustrated points to get full marks in the 13 mark question?

And 18 for the 36 marker?

Oh and if for example, I'm comparing Miles Davies and Brahms' rhythm, will I get 2 separate marks for stating that Davies uses syncopation in the first trumpet melody and then stating that similarly, Brahms uses syncopation in the violin and viola entrance at the beginning?

Good luck everyone! Lets hope the essays save us from the horrific nightmare that is listening...

Literally, my school is so crap at teaching music A level, so I've had to basically learn the information all by myself! It is stressful, but if you blag and try and write as much as you know hopefully we'll be alright! Also, it's only 15% of our overall Music A level, so it's not that terrible if we completely flunk it!

15% is still significant enough to completely mess up your grade! I'm on WJEC & it's the same percentage! Try making up little songs? jingle to remember facts. Works for me :)

Its best just to go in depth on one song from...

Its best just to go in depth on one song from each decade at this stage.

I'm in a very similar situation. My teacher is so unorganised. We have barely covered Jazz (thank God I had another teacher for Shostakovich), and we were pretty much right up to the deadline for coursework (Stayed in school until 8pm the night before in order to get everything done)

Good songs to look at are:
1910's:
Original Dixieland Jass Band - "Dixie Jazz Band One Step"

1920's:
Joe 'King' Oliver - "West End Blues' (Louis Armstrong on Trumpet/Scat singing, Earl Hines on piano (good example of stride piano in some parts)

1930's:
James P. Johnson - "You've got to be Modernistic" (Stride Piano Left hand, Lots of syncopated right hand)
Lester Young - "Lester Leaps In" (7 Piece, Tenor Sax, Cup-Muted Trumpet, Trombone, Count Basie on Piano, Guitar, bass, and drums.
Count Basie (Big Band) - "Taxi War Dance" (Improvisations over the chord progression of Willow Weep for Me)

1940's:
Theres so much more stuff for the 40's what with people like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington and many others reaching the height of their fame

Charlie Parker - "Koko" (Virtuosic Sax over the Chord Progression of *I think* "I Got Rhythm")
Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie - "Shaw Nuff" (Good example of Bebop)
Duke Ellington - "Harlem Airshaft" and "Cottontail"

I know its late, but hope it helps.

Section A was definitely not my best! I did Faustus. We hadn't really done much about stage space and relationships though so I couldn't think of much to write, plus it was something I'd neglected to write about in my script... Doh! B was good and C was perfect for the play I saw, so I'm not too worried. If you do horribly on any section, probably best to be section A anyway!

I don't think they're 100% necessary, but I guess (if this is one for the start) it would include stuff like what you're planning to explore (e.g. themes, mediums), artists you're planning to look at, initial ideas for outcomes, material's you'll experiment with...

But yeah, I think it is pointless, I never got told I "had" to one as you easily gain the marks just by showing the marker visually how you've reached the outcome of your project through your pages/ annotations... or is this more for your teacher so they can see you know where you're going?

This is rough because they do all sorts of weighting and massaging to get the right distribution of grades throughout the country but it's easy to remember and gives you an idea of where you are.

You could try something to do with whether the change in the importance of the songs over time is related to trend or technology. In early films, the song sections were pretty much central like in Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. As time went on, the songs arguably became a jingle, rather than a plot feature (Pocahontas, Tarzan, Mulan,) although arguably Lion King and Little Mermaid suggest otherwise.

And with the hi tech Pixar films, the songs take a complete backseat. In the Toy Storys and Wreck-it Ralph, the songs are very incidental; in Wall-e there is virtually no dialogue for most of the film, yet not real need for songs,

Nice! Im comparing King Kong, some of Franz waxmans works and am considering Batman! I find Glass's music really hard to analyse, tips? oh and im revising Belshazzar's Feast by William Walton.

I think with Glass he's really about the manipulation of harmony and rhythm. In this, there's a psychological intensity that drives the film along, which is thematic to the film itself. And often, the music doesn't only accompany the film - it often implies something the onscreen does not. Foreshadowing, if you will.

Check out some of Glass' other stuff, it's pretty awesome. Heroes is pretty cool, and the string quartet 'Company' 's my fav. Gotta love some C20 music, aha! :D

Comparing it to Batman's great, you've got opportunity to explore the development of film music, along with development of 'classical'/traditional music itself as well. Like, what with rhythms/tech/harmony and all that.

Hey, suffragettes is a great concept. I'm doing exactly the same and went with gang culture to focus on the war aspects. I take it that you're going down the feminist route. All you need to do is make sure that you can link your choices and decisions to traditional Greek theatre and mention the similarities/differences in your exam.
What is your staging and seating going to be like? Are you keeping it similar to the Greek amphitheatre staging? If not, why not? So, if you're choosing in the round seating, is that because you want the audience to feel more intimate or included? Make sure you have a knowledge of your staging and reasons why.
It's also important that you cover your set and how it links to your concept. 1880's-1910 was the height of the Suffragette movement so perhaps you might choose to locate it in a city square etc. Remember that in Lysistrata, there are only two sets; outside Lysistrata and Calonice's house and in front of the Acropolis (the acropolis has to be offstage remember.# Also, how are you going to stage the erect phalli that these men seem to walk around with? Or how will you show the Baby that Myrrhine and Cinesias have? What will you use for the old men's fire pitchers or the old women's water? What about your cast? How many? Make sure you KEEP LINKING BACK TO HOW ARISTOPHANES ORIGINALLY DID IT
When this play was first performed at the Dianysis festival, there will have been 24 choral members but only 3 or 4 principle actors #they will have multi-rolled.# Your concept is basically a way for you to tick boxes on what you've learnt so far. I made the error of focusing too much on the artistic side and what it would look like on stage and so restarted. It's really just ticking boxes for the examiner.
Something that I definitely had to think about was: WHAT IS YOUR KEY INTENTION? Make sure you know the key themes that your interpretation includes. My intention is to highlight the devastation of war and how everyone is a loser. Also, who influences your interpretation? Brecht is one of my influential practitioners because the old comedy style that Aristophanes used is well suited to large, exaggerated characters #buffoonery et.# I also plan to have my principle characters multi-rolling #as this is what they will have done in Ancient Greece# and I will have them changing costume on stage #as part of my Brechtian influence.#
Aristophanes' original intention wouldn't have been feminism as the entire audience #with the exception of a few slaves# will have been male. #You could say that feminism relates more to a contemporary audience.# However, he does give Lysistrata a power and respect that the other women don't display #the other women are in fact shown as quite dim-witted.# How are you going to show Lysistrata as different to other women? Also, how will you differentiate between Sparta and Athens? Perhaps through costume? Accent? Make sure you have an idea for that :#
I hope this has been some form of help. 1. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PRACTITIONER OR THEATRE COMPANY TO DRAW INFLUENCE FROM #and that it's relative to your concept and the play.# 2. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW YOUR INTENTION AND HOW YOU WANT YOUR AUDIENCE TO FEEL 3. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THOUGHT OF YOUR CONCEPT FOR ALL ASPECTS OF THE PLAY #every scene, if you're setting it suffragette, how will you direct the Myrrhine and Cinesias scene where he is trying to bed her?# Good luck with your exam and concept! :);):D

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the effort you went to to help me, this is great!

I don't know.. Tbh I really want to know grade thresholds.. 91 was the boundary for A* last year, but this paper seemed, as is the general consensus, harder than 2012.

I think I got 100, but I got a high C in coursework, so that has to be thought about as well. So I think It will be 95 and above A*?
So I will get like a B/A overall.

Hi, I'm also sitting this exam. Our teacher has told us to include loads of good drama terminology with stuff like the movement of set and lighting and such. Practicing questions is probably only best to find the best structure for an answer and is probably only most useful for the bigger mark questions. Read through some example questions to see what are good answers for the smaller marked questions in Section A. Then most of all just get your concept completely secure and make sure you have all your links for the OC and all your comparison notes for Shakespeare organised and keep going through them to save time looking through in the exam! Hope this helps :)

Hey, I auditioned for Central School of Speech and Drama this year, however I hated the audition so didn't bother applying for the rest! You have to be 100% certain and prepared for it. I think I just went to a bad audition though to be honest. We had to audition for all three pathways (straight acting, musical theatre and devised theatre) however, in one of the auditions I was made to be 'barbed wire' and the colour yellow...yeah you have to be prepared. They try to intimidate you but as long as you man up and don't freeze it will be fine. I made a few friends and it was a good laugh, but it made me realise that I'd rather go to uni than go to drama school!

Hello so we have our ensemble GCSE performances coming up and we are looking for a flute trio to play.
We've gone to our music teachers but the one who would be helpful is a string player so she always refers us to the teacher than plays woodwind instruments but she isn't really helpful and always gives us Jazzy sort of pieces.
We're after something more classical, to play composers like Mozart or just classical sounding pieces - I say classical as a whole (not just the period of classical music). We are all around grade 6 or above so we aren't looking for something incredibly easy but it's good if it's not something extremely difficult. Something lower than grade 6 is alright too as you don't need to be able to play to that high a grade for Music GCSE. Actually, preferably something that is not too challenging because we don't have long to learn it.
Also, it's ok if it's a good arrangement of a piece or even if it wasn't specifically written for flutes but has been arranged. If there's like a violin trio or something that you think would work with flutes please tell me.

Please help us, we're desperate now :-(

Thank you!!

There's a list of stuff for three flutes below - just check they're out of copyright before downloading them!
But recently, I bet it's the same for everyone, I've been worried that I've made the wrong choice! I panicked that it might be full of second year LIPA students for some reason, or that there wont be many people living there. What you've just said has reassured me that it's a great place to live though, so hopefully these worried feelings will now disappear :P

If anyone could tell me if there's any obvious mistakes I've made (particuarly in Miles Davies), could you please tell me now? Also, if anyone could roughly guess what I've got, then that would be appreciated :')

I hope everyone did as well as they deserve to as well :) x

So for my foundation project we were given the brief about modular design. We can make a 3d piece, furniture and garment under this topic but I am not sure about what modular is supposed to be. Would modular be considered as individual pieces that can be joined together as units to creat one piece, do they all have to be the same size and shape? Please help I'm not sure what to do, I was thinking of making a garment and looking at modular origami, etc.

modular origami takes absolutely ages to make the triangles and then put them together. unless you're pro at designing the layout of each piece for clothing, for example, youre going to have to be prepared to spend A LOT of time. take the small swan I did: http://allthingsanita.blogspot.co.uk/ that took me about 4 hojrs of folding and then constructing

Why don't you both start with something more...

Why don't you both start with something more simple. For example, think about the media and techniques you like to use and then research artists who use them and get ideas off them. All the famous artists have some great ideas and work, it's inspiring to look at their work and interpret it in your own making it more personal. I'm currently studying A level Fine art & Textiles. It may not be a strong personal interest of yours, but I always think that marine life and sea life projects are always interesting, you could always go to pet shops and photograph them. Another idea which I think may be useful, is something to do with generations & link it to your family, a family tree idea. Even if drawing and painting humans isn't a strong point of yours, you could focus on something more simple, for example human skin and how it wrinkles and ages throughout the generations by photographing different family members hands, then drawing/painting them.
Start off with more simple basic ideas if you're unsure, as long as you're passionate enough about art, the more artist research you do and the more inspiration you get, the stronger your portfolio will be :)

Hey, firstly, I think the best thing to do is not...

Hey, firstly, I think the best thing to do is not worry. There is nothing you can do now to affect your grade so fretting about it won't change anything.

Secondly, I took gcse textiles 2 years ago but can't remember the moderation process. However, I take A level photography now and only a portion( maybe one or two people) of the class or year are moderated so even if the moderator might take marks off, there's no guarantee that they will even chose your book

Hope this helped and GOOD LUCk!
(And don't worry about things you can change, just get your exams out of the way and forget about them till results day! :) )

Hey, how did you do in the end? I've got mine tomorrow - not a fan of this exam, I must say.

Got an A in the end - 5UMS of an A* :/
If I could recommend - look at every markscheme available to get an idea of what they want. I did that for AS drama and got full UMS. It's rather worrying that AS was easier than GCSE, but there you go.

Absolutely loved the Antigone questions that came up!! I'd done the opening section to death and had done the Creon essay as part of exam practise and ended up with a high B. did Creon essay today and went into a bit too much detail! Wasn't a fan of the live production questions. Did the 3rd one on "a day in the death of joe egg" reckon I've done ok and I got an A in practical so should be fine 😃

Me too! Hip Hop was the worst bit for me too... SO HAPPY THAT ELVIS POPPED UP!
I want an A too! The drum sequencer thing was so hard! You doing it next year?

I know... I was so worried that the lesser known artists were going to come up. I did Bill Haley and Elvis in the second last section and I am glad the long answer questions went well. I got an A in the practice paper we did before (June 2009) which was a rock and roll and hip hop paper. Its just coursework that is hard to predict!! Oh yes!! Thinking about studying it at uni.

Dont worry, just retake it next year. Try and get a copy of textiles at the cutting edge book, that pretty much has everything you need to revise from. AS and A2 overlap a lot do just try your best :/ the spec is so broad it's just difficult to revise for :/

It's alright, I was planning on dropping it at the end of the year, crazy amount of coursework
