Also I'm never quite sure when to use cela and when to use ce, can you help?
Also not quite sure on the difference between Ca and Ce

Ce is always used in front of a name.
For instance :
- Ce chien est petit.
- Je n'ai pas mangé ce bout de gâteau.

While cela (that) is used alone as a word. Also ceci (this) is used the same way. You use them to refer to something you talked about earlier.
- J'ai mangé du poulet et du riz. Cela était appétissant.
- Hier, j'ai acheté deux pains au chocolat. Cela ne m'a pas coûté cher.
- Elle m'a offert une lampe de poche, ceci m'était très utile pour mes vacances au camping.
I actually just noticed I don't need them that much. I mean orally, you can replace them by "c'est" or "ça" (c'était appétissant. Ce n'était pas cher OR Ça ne m'a pas coûté cher. C'était très utile pour mes vacances au camping)

About ça, I don't know how to explain but I can give you some example. Sometimes you can translate it by "it" as a thing OR a whole thing.
- Ça m'a semble impossible ("ça" doesn't indicate necessarily something you mentionned before but the whole thing that looks impossible - the thing you see maybe? ;) In this case you can easily replace it by "it")
- Je n'y arrive pas. Ça m'énèrve. (here "ça" is the whole sentence before)
- Ça n'a pas de prix.
- .. etc etc.

Other/Not applicable Entering myself for German GCSE

If you want something to show to German...

If you want something to show to German employers, German certificates of competency in the German language would be more useful. http://german.about.com/od/gamesexer...a/gertests.htm

You could approach a school to sit GCSE German as a private candidate, but you (and they) may find it too much hassle. The present GCSE model involves two speaking Controlled Assessments, and two written Controlled Assessments. This means that you have to do coursework, but write it all out from memory under exam conditions and pretend you're not writing it out entirely from memory. Then another two exams in May or June, although they may be on the same day. Many schools and FE colleges are hesitant about accepting private candidates. This is especially the case when it involves conducting fiddly types of exam, such as orals and science practicals.

The other alternative is to actually enrol as a mature part-time student on an actual GCSE German course, in the evening or similar. This may, or may not, be an option for you in your area. The knowledge and skills gained would be transferable to the early-level German proficiency certificates.

I did the AQA Spanish GCSE Exam on May 17th..Listening and Reading of course!
I did the higher paper!

I thought the reading was quite easy and should be an easy 'A*' but on the other hand, the listening was quite hard and I found quite a lot of unknown words that I've never ever seen before! But the listening should still be an easy 'C' or 'B' Grade!

What did everyone think of it?

I agree with an above poster: don't just randomly force them into your writing/speaking.

It would be better to just think about getting 2 or 3 max into an essay, it shows that you can use it without trying to look like that's the only grammatical point you actually know. It's just a nice touch if you can fit a few in rather than over-do it.

I'm doing "Der Besuch der Alten Dame" for Edexcel A2 as well, I was wondering if someone could help me with the structure of the essay. Say the question was along the lines of 'Describe a character and explain the importance of the character in the book/play/film', would you do it in 2 big, consecutive paragraphs like that (ie. describe their part in the play, and then analyse their role), or would you do 1 short point, analyse, another short point, analyse etc.? Sorry that this isn't a great explanation, but I got taught the former and yet edexcel specification seems to describe the latter!

My teacher told us a structure that works well...

My teacher told us a structure that works well when writing Spanish essays. If you remember this structure and practice some timed essays before the exam, then you should be fine.

1) Start with your introduction... talk about what the question is asking, and how you are going to answer it. You could invite the reader in by adding rhetorical questions or linking directly to society nowadays. It's a good point in the essay to explain the situation we are living in at the moment. There should also be a punchy opening statement to grab the reader's attention.

2) Next, the main body of the essay. Could possibly be around 4-6 paragraphs. For each paragraph (you may want to do a few paragraphs in favour of the statement, and a few paragraphs against the statement) you should state a relevant point, evidence for this point, your own personal reaction (e.g. 'me preocupa el hecho que...' or 'es una lastima que...' etc.) and finally evaluate your point and link it back to the question.

3) Finally, your conclusion. This should summarise your points, without adding any new ones. You should include: how you have answered the question, your overall opinion on the matter, and a punchy ending! Apparently, using rhetorical questions and these statements relating to our society can get you lots of marks.

Remember; you get marked on your content, vocabulary, structure and accuracy. Try to include a range of vocabulary, and make sure you practice grammar to sustain your accuracy throughout the essay.

Try not to get too worried about the exam. At the end of the day, you are trying your best with a new language and that has skill in itself. I'm sure you will do great! Is your exam 23rd May? Good luck!

How did everyone find it?

I thought the reading was pretty easy and I think I've done fairly well in that. I could have confused some of the names in the matching up, but I think the answers I put in the end were probably right. There was one phrase on question two, something with "porter" I was a bit unsure of, but I think I put "unloading the packages." I don't think it's right, but I tried to find something that would fit in the context because "wearing packaging" wouldn't be right.

I don't think I did as well on the listening and I think I've dropped a few marks in that, definitely on the last question, but hopefully overall I've still done well. I'm glad none of the papers were as hard as last year!

Did exactly the same with the packages bit, didn't realise porter meant to carry as well as to wear!

Grade boundaries? Personally I found the listening much harder than the reading, but going by past grade boundaries the reading is always lower than listening... 32 A* for listening and 34 A* for reading?

The listening, it's my weakest part

My advice for the listening part of the exam is listen to everything they have to say before writing an answer, they are often trying to trip you up.

For example, the question is "what is Jean's favourite colour" then the tape will say that his favourite colour USED to be blue but then he will BUT NOW my favourite colour is green.

As soon as you hear that keyword you instantly assume that is the answer. So just take your time and be careful. They always give you enough time to play the tapes over a few times anyways.

Good luck everyone!!

Grade boundaries for January 2013 out of 110...

Grade boundaries for January 2013 out of 110 were:
A - 89
B - 81
C - 74
D - 67
E - 60

They change every year though, as in June 2012 they were much lower than that.

Advice: practice. It sounds obvious but it's the only thing that will help. Do all the past papers you can get your hands on, and practice as many essays as possible, since it's such a big chunk of your mark. Learn vocab, if you struggle to remember it then you could perhaps memorise a few key pieces for each sub-topic? Try and get one or more subjunctives into you essay if you can, and include structures (stuff like Premierement, En outre, Ce qui me frappe le plus, Je dirais que, J'en viens a conclure que)

so far there seems to always be 1 question based on character and the other theme. Meursault is the only character with enough to write about and they've already had questions on the absence of God in his life, his reactions to the public and love, so I think it will be a more straightforward question on his relationship with a particular character(s), possibly his mother or marie!

For the theme question, possibly something on the absurdity of life or non-conformism.
I will probably choose the character Q because it's somewhat easier!

Hello! I'm in the process of writing a farewell...

Hello! I'm in the process of writing a farewell message for my Spanish teacher (it's my favourite subject). Below is a copy of my first draft. Would somebody be able to tell me if what I've written makes sense and if there are any improvements I could make?:

Sra.

Thanks in advance! :D

Good job on the vocab, especially considering you...

Good job on the vocab, especially considering you didn't have a dictionary :) You do need to watch your grammar though, as there are several basic errors.

Some things I noticed :

- verbs go at the end following dass : viele Leute denken dass, Wissenschaftler zu viel Macht haben / die Leute denken, dass es nicht ethisch vertretbar ist.
- conjugations : niemand weiß
- verbs should be in the second position : jedoch könnte
- plurals : die Risiken

My German's not brilliant either but I'd suggest something like :

Viele Leute meinen, dass Wissenschaftler zu viel Macht haben. Medizinforschung ist notwendig, aber niemand weiß genau, was die Risiken sind. Zum Beispiel scheint Stammzellenforschung erfolgreich zu sein. Allerdings könnte sie mit dem Klonen von Menschen verbunden. Die meisten Leute glauben, dass dies nicht ethisch vertretbar ist.

I'm currently doing A2 German with Edexcel, but I think this also applies to French, and maybe even other languages with Edexcel. I'm slightly confused about the Unit 4 paper! For the literature part (part 'd' of the research section), what's the structure meant to be?
For example, if the question was describe a character and it's significance in the play/film/book, would you write it in 2 consecutive sections like that, or would you do 1 point about the character, analyse it immediately, then another point, analyse it, and continue like that?
Sorry this isn't the best explanation, but if anyone could help that'd be great thankyou!!

hi, can someone please help me with what this means:
'te empiezo a querer y mera yo'
thanks!

Yes, make sense "te empiezo a querer y me rayo"

Well the first part is easy, "I'm starting to love you".

The second part is a colloquial expression, "rayar" means "scratch"...

...but have another sense in colloquial language, widely used, a synonim in spanish can be "agobiar", in english maybe "overwhelm" is similar...

If you say "yo me rayo" (yourself), you say that you think too much about it with concern, you can't get it out of your head...

Otherwise, if you say "tú me rayas" o " me estas rayando" (another person"), means that you are annoying me, bothering me...

bye!

If you do fast-track A-level Spanish, as well as Biology and Chemistry that means you're basically doing six subjects. Would you sign up for six AS-levels in one year?! Of course, if you do find it's too challenging you could just drop A2 spanish before February and only take the AS exams in May/June.

Could depend on the exam board, but generally A-level modern foreign languages are as follows:-
AS-level: one speaking exam (15 minutes), one exam paper, comprising a reading section, a listening section and a writing section
A2-level: one speaking exam (15 minutes), one exam paper (composition thereof may be variable between boards)

Me too!
For listening and reading it's important to learn the vocab because without this exam technique is useless.
For translation make sure not to translate literally but to try and recognize the structures that they're trying to test you on.
For the essay ensure that you revise your topic thoroughly and different sub-topics within it because you never know what the question will be on.
Remember just because we're doing WJEC doesn't mean we can't do the AQA/OCR past papers (except maybe the OCR essays) because the level is still the same meaning we're practicing the same skills.

I agree, most people I've spoken to found the reading a lot easier than the listening. I hope the boundaries are lower for listening because I know I've probably messed up with some stupid answers, definitely the last few questions. Whatever I came up with probably doesn't even make sense, but I guessed and that's better than nothing. I was also writing some stuff down as they were saying the next answer, so although I had an idea, I might not have been fully accurate with everything.

I'm at QMUL in my 2nd year and I recently submitted an essay worth 80% of a German module. Because of personal issues and (stupidly) constantly restructuring what I was writing, I managed to get it in on time but way under the word count (3000 words limit, 10% under would be 2700 - mine was 2300).
I was wondering if anybody (at QMUL or elsewhere) has done something similar before and what happened when you got it back? I can't stop worrying about failing the class now, because I don't know how essays under the word limit are marked (if anybody could shed some light on that too, that'd be awesome).
Thanks in advance!

At my university, you lose 1% for every 100 words you are over or under the word limit. So if an essay had to be 3000 words, then you have to write between 2900-3100. I don't think you will fail the class but you will be penalised.

They've helped me feel more confident with what the questions will be like, for me I was always worried about the listening part :) Also go on the aqa French a level website as they have exemplar material such as old writing answers which scored well are on there and they're good to look at if you're a bit worried about the writing part :)
Hope that helps a bit! :)

You can actually study one of a few different things, such as a book, film, a region, an artist or history. It seems a lot of people choose a book, drama or a film, which I would definitely recommend. You get given a long list of questions, but you only choose one to answer. Have you had a look at the past papers? They're all on this website (except for the Summer 2012 one); the essay questions are on the insert like this one. They're often to do with themes, characters, plot, main events, significance etc. You will need to have a think about what your main ideas will be, as you get a lot more marks for content than for language skills and so need to be making relevant and varied points.

I studied Good Bye, Lenin! and Andorra, but some people do Das Leben der Anderen, and other plays and films (sorry, brain is too tired to think at the moment). Basically, past papers are your best bet to see what the questions are like, as they don't vary much from year to year. Remember in your speaking exam you will be questioned on similar things, so just have some ideas ready :)

I did goodbye lenin too! But the questions usually ask for the works of the director rather than the film itself. I'm a little confused about that.

I think technology being this advanced is a long way away in the future. To be able to speak a language is one thing, in the sense of communication, but to speak it fluently or to the level of a native, that is something else. As anybody who knows a language to even a basic-intermediate level, tools such as google translate, which are fantastic, make the most basic of errors. Beyond this, the speech recognition technology that is required is even less advanced than this.

Also, try and think about what a language gives you apart from a professional advantage. Learning a language is beneficial for the brain and doing so gives you a chance to access a new culture. There are even people who argue that the brains thoughts are limited and dictated by language, so you can literally free your mind.
Personally I would have a look at Japanese for Busy People I, which seems to be reasonable priced and has a CD included. Get the 'romanised' version if you are just interested in learning the language without learning too much about the writing system. Get the 'kana' version if you want to push yourself a bit with Japanese reading and writing.

Yeah same, we've been doing reading/listening/writing papers, but never got to the actual essay bits and normally did them at home. Whenever we do a timed essay on the spot i get like C/Bs, my accuracy is always so terrible D: But, i think for the essay, shove as much content in as possible because that's the highest mark (out of 20!) so if your accuracy and stuff is crappy it shouldn't matter too much, that's what happens with me anyway :3
Basically i'm nervous for everything french and exam related.

Hey Silverwing,

I haven't really understood...

Hey Silverwing,

I haven't really understood all the A2, FN2, etc part but all I know is you have to improve your french.
Well, you still have 11 days (Have you any other exams coming?). The thing i'd recommend you to do is to practice your french every day. When you wake up or at the end of the day. Idk if you'll have some topics in particular or how this exam is but you def should read some real articles. I mean something more interesting than some texts on your french books at school. Maybe on http://www.lemonde.fr or just listen to a french radio online to get the accent. You can check on itunes or just look for it on Google (NRJ, skyrock, voltage, ado, etc). The positive point about listening to radio of course is you can do something else at the same time, you don't really need to focuse on it. Turn the radio on when you're getting ready for example then you can just pronounce what they say even though you don't get all of it.
There're many different way to learn french word everyday. Perhaps switch your cellphone language into french or your social network page.

Good luck for your exam!

I remember hating that book at school. :p The easiest way to find a copy would probably be if you can get hold of the ISBN (unique number that every edition of a book has) from an existing copy (try asking your teacher), and then search using that. Amazon will likely have it, or Blackwells also do a good range of foreign-language books.

Hope that helps. :)

I'm not really learning the vocabulary from the specification like that, i'm just continually doing listening tests, reading past papers, reading resources i've got from my teacher. Any questions I get wrong, I pick out and find the key words. From here, you just need to regularly test yourself on those words you found. By regularly i mean a few times a day, it becomes immersed in your head. Also by doing these tests where you get the words from (resources + past papers) you just find certain words come more frequently, and tbh you only need 35/45 in reading for an a* (ROUGHLY based on previous years) and around 28/45 in listening for an a* (again based on previous years *all raw marks*)

The characters and social themes were fairly easy, however I'm struggling with the techniques.. any ideas?

We're doing that too! The main technique to write about is the use of "El Realismo Magico" i.e Magic Realism. Basically Esquivel uses it to create humour and is used to combine the supernatural with daily routine
You can write about the presence of "los fantasmas de Mama Elena y Nacha" and the effect of the food on people (e.g "la vomatina collectiva en la boda de Rosaura")

The above book is very advanced and is for aimed at undergraduates, but would be a very good investment if you want to continue studying French.

If however you only want to do the A Level, a good book to buy is 'Help Yourself To Advanced French Grammar'.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Help-Yoursel...french+grammar

Schaum's Outline Of French Grammar is also very good and each grammar point is accompanied with exercises. Personally, I prefer this one to the previous one but both are good.

Can somebody please help me a bit with the subjunctive. I know the basic reasons for using and am fine with the conditional style element. However when it comes to expressing what people have said I'm confused with using ,dass and the difference between sie sagte, sie haette OR sie sagte, sie habe and then the whole sei and sein thing!

Grüss Gott!

In German we have two forms of the subjunctive, as does English!
However, we use them slightly differently. German has one present subjunctive and one past subjunctive. Here's an example of English/German.

Present subjunctive of the verb 'to be'/sein : be/sei
example sentences:
The King asked I be knighted.
Der Bundesrat glaubt, die schweizer Arbeitslosigkeit sei zu hoch.

Past subjunctive of the verb 'to be'/sein : were/wäre
example sentences:
If I were the King, I would eat an apple.
Wenn ich der König wäre, ässe (würde) ich einen Apfel (essen).

As demonstrated, the past subjunctive and the K2 in English and German are the same.
However, the present subjunctive and the K1 are different. Basically, one uses the K1 to express ideas that aren't one's own.

Also, please note that the dative of 'eine' is 'einer', not 'eine'. :)
