I'm 15 and in 4th year and I'm choosing my subjects for 5th year in June. I want to be a physiotherapist when I'm older and I don't even have a clue what to pick.I want to choose an IT subject like administration or computing: which one is best? Are you even allowed to choose a subject you haven't studied for before? I was thinking about taking chemistry but I haven't studied it before.

Thanks! :) x

I'm not entirely sure what's best for physiotherapy (someone else will know :)) but here's some advice on the rest:
I've done Admin, but not Computing, I think they're really quite different. :p
Admin is more general office things - like spreadsheets, databases and word processing - and you do a theory paper as well.
I think Computing is more about creating programs, I know the folio is quite important.

You are allowed to take subjects you haven't before IF your school lets you - every school's different. :)
For example, my school would let people 'crash' Chemistry if they had a good enough Standard Grade in another relevant subject, like Biology.

You'll have to speak to the Head of Department for the subject you want to take and they'll tell you the information you need/grades required. :) If you're really stuck, your guidance teacher could also help as well!

So why does the incident photon/electron have to give the atomic electron an exact amount of energy?

Posted from TSR Mobile

Think of the atomic electron having to hop up a flight of stairs, with one stair representing one energy level. The atomic electron has to take an amount of energy equivalent to exactly one or two or three (or etc etc) stairs as it cannot stop halfway up a stair, and those amounts of energy depend on the atom (i.e. the element).

For example, if the difference between n=1 and n=2 is 10eV, both an electron with 11.2eV of Ek and an electron with 12.1eV of Ek will have to transfer that 10eV of energy for the atomic electron to get there. :)

One of my acquaintance was in America with his wife some years ago and he showed me his pictures which he made during the travel around America. I took the exam because I wanted to see if I was OK in the first two sections (being a law grad) otherwise why attempt the science. I did no science revision as I solely wanted my results from the first two sections. Got my results this morning:
S1 72
S2 72
S3 42

Obviously very pleased with these as it means all I need to do is up that science section and jobs a goodun. Hope every else did well.

don't do your syllabus so don't know is there's a specific method for these.....

It looks like a binomial probability problem where you need to find the probability of 3 success from 7 trials but complicated by the fact that the 3rd success must be on the 7th trial.

My approach would be to calculate the probability of 2 success in 6 trials (don't forget the number of arrangements) and then multiply that result by the probability of success occuring on the 7th occassion.

2) I have bipolar, and everyone in my family has had post natal depression, which puts me at a massive risk for getting it, and in bipolar women it's more dangerous usually. Planning the date would enable me to plan with my therapist whether to start medication as a preventative measure and how regularly to have appointments.
3) I have endometriosis and the pain is horriffic, and if giving birth is anything like that I'd rather have a cesarean.

Except intelligence is different from other human traits, it isn't purely (and so simply) hereditary, and I'm surprised that Flynn acts as though it were.

What's more, associating education and number of children, education and IQ, and then taking that to an association between number of children and IQ is jumping the gun a bit.

What's more, you (and Flynn) are assuming the direction between any possible correlation. You are assuming that education dictates number of children, rather than number of children effects education.

And what's more (despite trying) I've yet to find any direction relationship between IQ and number of children.

Finally, speaking of the Flynn effect, that would seem to show that the whole concept is contrary to evidence anyway.

1. It's a quantitative heritable trait. Steve Hsu, has a nice summary here of the findings from behavioural genetic studies, and more recently molecular genetics. So a significant amount of variation within the population is due to genetic variation in addition to environmental variation. Hsu is involved with the BGI Cognitive Genomics Project - I'd recommend his slides from this presentation to Google about their project looking at the genetic basis of cognitive ability.

2. There's a pretty robust relationship between cognitive ability and academic outcomes. It's not the only factor, but there is a significant relationship (see Deary 2007).

3. The thing with the Flynn Effect is that it is only on certain sub-tests - which suggests people are getting better at certain things as a result of environmental changes. But overall ability - or the g factor - doesn't appear to have changed.

4. There's a reasonable summary of the research on the relationship between intelligence and fertility on wikipedia. A recent paper by Meisenberg summarises:

Quote:

Although a negative relationship between fertility and education has been described consistently in most countries of the world, less is known about the relationship between intelligence and reproductive outcomes. Also the paths through which intelligence influences reproductive outcomes are uncertain. The present study uses the NLSY79 to analyze the relationship of intelligence measured in 1980 with the number of children reported in 2004, when the respondents were between 39 and 47 years old. Intelligence is negatively related to the number of children, with partial correlations (age controlled) of −.156, −.069, −.235 and −.028 for White females, White males, Black females and Black males, respectively. This effect is related mainly to the g-factor. It is mediated in part by education and income, and to a lesser extent by the more “liberal” gender attitudes of more intelligent people. In the absence of migration and with constant environment, genetic selection would reduce the average IQ of the US population by about .8 points per generation.

I started boarding school in September, and from the start it was awful. From half way through the first week, people would slam doors in my face and leave the table when I stood up , all because I apparentlt said something. That got resolved but things pretty much carried on , they would run away from me when they were going to dinner, and make hints for me to leave like REALLY strong ones. All of the boys caught on and were really rude, I coulnd't walk anywhere without getting abuse, and I basically became mute. I would only leave my room for lessons, until a couple of weeks ago I would only go to dinner 3 times a week and not have breakfast or lunch and eat out of the vendi machines. I've never had a roomate because no one wats to share with me and I have a place at another school , though it would mean re-doing the year. Though universities apparntly don't mind if its for 'personal reasons'. My grades aren't awful, more a couple of bs cs ds and a u . Though I should be getting all as. It has recently looked up though, i have made friends with people in different years though they are all leaving, I know although I dont go to breakfast or lunch go to dinner everyday. I just wait till they have left come late sit at a table and don't talk then leave. But this day school would mean living at home nd I went to boarding school cause me and my parents didn't get on and the school is full of really rich famous people m and Im not that. Also I have stopped getting abuse from theboys. But the quality of education I get here is pretty terrible . If i stay here I only have one more year till univeristy and I weekly board. But im really scared my new school will be really snobby as it is an all girls private school in sloane square

That's ok I don't mind helping. I saw the deluxe classic but not the premium as the didn't have one. However he did show me the difference between classic and premium and I have to say it has definitely changed my decision to premium. The kitchen and lounge are far superior. The deluxe room sizes are good, decent size bed and desk, and lot of storage. The bathroom is quite decent compared to other student en suites I've experienced. The guy that showed me around was lovely, although he was weekend staff only. I did look at the gym, it's quite small and the music was very very loud but the pool looked lovely with sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. The common areas are quite small but have everything you need. There is a lovely park across the road too and it literally is 5 minutes walk to the university. I will definitely be booking!

Hey guys :) Im torn between victoria halls and new wharf hall. The rooms in victoria hall allocated by DMU are all booked up so if I was to book directly with victoria halls I would be in phase 2 of the building so not neccessarily with many first years. I really liked victoria halls from the start but now Im considering new wharf hall as I kinda wanted to be living with first years like myself. If anyone could suggest which is better in their opinion or list why each place is good that would be really helpful :)

We do have lower rates of gun crime in Britain, but I'm not sure why people assume that this is because of gun legislation. Even before we had strict gun laws, there was almost never any shooting sprees, so that suggests the gun laws haven't really had any effect.

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘before we had strict gun laws’. We’ve had strict gun laws since the early 20th Century. People have needed a special licence to own a machine gun since 1937.
The reason we have no awful shooting sprees is because deranged malcontents can’t just walk into a gun store and buy a semi-automatic assault weapon.

Got an email this morning for the HR north west scheme, informing me that I have not received an interview for the scheme, as they had to prioritise HR stream and i didn't initially apply for that.

Pretty annoyed, as wasted 2 days re-writing CV and Cover letter - why ask me to apply if they were not going to even read it !!!!

lol - rant over - i understand why they have done it, just think its stupid, why not just ask HR candidates in the first place, then if they weren't up to scratch ask general and finance to apply. The Northwest HR scheme is obviously poorly managed :p

This isn't about Nottingham in particular, but a few posts down there's some good points about the conversion in general: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show....php?t=1959013

I've applied for this uni/course too, coming out of a Cognitive Linguistics based Literature MA. I think it depends on how long you've been out of education, if you do the course full/part-time and you're academic background. For example, I'm well-versed in the ol' essay writing with some experience in psych journal reading/empirical research, but I'm going to have to really get stuck into the statistics stuff as it doesn't come naturally to me.

Hope this helps a little bit!

Thank you :) well I have just finished doing a BA English at Southampton Uni, I'm mostly worried about the stats too really! I did Psychology at A Level but nothing since then. Did you apply for the PGDip or MSc? Have you heard back yet? :)

Personally I don't agree with the principle that,...

Personally I don't agree with the principle that, just because someone consents to something which is harmful to them, it automatically becomes moral. Nor do I agree with the principle that engaging in an action which only harms the one performing it is necessarily moral. In my view, the concept of morality (i.e. the manner in which a person "should" behave) takes into account the costs and benefits to everybody, not just to third parties. (Although this is a different matter to whether or not the action should be acceptable in society or punishable by law etc.)

As far as cannibalism goes, I wouldn't say eating human flesh is necessarily immoral in and of itself. But in general, there are only really two ways to get human flesh to eat. Either you slaughter a healthy person in order to eat them as you would do with a farm animal, or you find someone who is sick and going to die anyway, or is dead already, and eat them. In the first instance, I would consider it immoral to slaughter the healthy person, regardless of whether or not they consented to it. And in the second instance, I would also consider it immoral to eat something which is likely to cause illness and disease to the person eating - and eating dead meat like a vulture is particularly unhealthy for humans.

Having said that, there are also instances where cannibalism can be beneficial - for example, if you're stranded on a mountain with nothing to eat but human flesh, then it can save your life - in which case this benefit may outweigh most of the costs.

I have to have another MRI scan next month, and I had two just over a year ago. I was wondering if there are any adverse effects to having more than one MRI scan? Do they use radiation? They've all been on different parts of my body, but I've also recently had three x-rays.

The full name of an MRI is a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Image (they don't call it that though as people hear the word radiation and freak). But it doesn't involve ionising radiation, and there are no known side effects. They have a negligible risk factor, compared to an X-ray its infinitesimally small. Only issues could be if you have a pacemaker, are claustrophobic or wear metal in to the scanner (as it's an enormous electromagnetic which will attract metal objects very strongly).

The Crazy In Love superstar is currently performing on the European leg of her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour, but has been advised to cancel Tuesday's (14May13) concert at Sportpaleis in Antwerp.
A representative for the singer tells the Associated Press she is suffering from exhaustion and dehydration, but the cancellation comes amid growing speculation the former Destiny's Child star is expecting her second child with husband Jay-Z.

I'm not 30+ but I don't think that's a particularly fair judgement on a programme that was always made on a fraction of the budget of today's show and yet managed to deal with major issues throughout its run. Consider the politics of employment and being able to feed the planet in The Green Death (ignoring the giant maggots, obviously); the extent to which a population can be manipulated by a singular evil figure as in Genesis of the Daleks; the place of technology and the emergence of artificial intelligence which might rival humanity (something which we're increasingly grappling with today) as in The War Machines, produced, I might add, in 1966. They didn't have CGI to fill in the gaps and they had to deal with censorious policies. The programme they made, particularly in the 1960s, was ahead of its time and the fact that people can watch it today and it still makes them think suggests that it was not dire, far from it.

It's a harsh lesson, but when you turn in a piece of work which is essentially copied, there's always the risk of being found out. The consequences are logical I'm afraid. They'd be far worse at uni, so best to take the hit now and learn the lesson.

I completely understand, being at uni myself. My point is, if you are instructed by a teacher to do a certain thing in order to get the grade, that it what you would do. Because you assume that the teacher is telling you the correct thing. However him, and half of his ICT class are now in jeopardy, and most of them will not get into uni, purely because the school told them to do something ridiculous. I just wondered what was best for him to do, since essentially, it's not his fault, just like it isn't the fault of the other 10 people in his class.

Yes. Intolerance of intolerance is a hypocritical concept that loops back on itself and creates a chain of poor self-justification in a desperate attempt to seize the moral high ground when it is inevitable that it won't unless it tolerates those who don't tolerate them.

Would it be bigotry to disallow those who find people who disagree with interracial couples to have children?

Logically no, socially perhaps, but is there any reason to oppose those who have prejudice views from having a family other than the fact they hold a different view from you? Or is this view 'damaging' to a child's upbringing?

As above, if you're prepared to stoop yourself to their level then you're no better than them and you shouldn't expect sympathy.

Lost what?

I don't think it's 'hateful' to logically engage in a discussion, though you've displayed one of the typical liberalist strategies to an argument - advance and retreat, in this case the latter. If you're not prepared to engage someone when they do so with you likewise then you're only basis of justification is self-verified reasons, which hold no sway in any argument.

He means that the homosexual lobby, inclusive of LGBT only, is the minority compared with everyone else, not those from straight backgrounds who support them.

I wouldn't bring reputation into an argument on the internet as if it matters, all it shows is the amount of times someone agrees with you even if those people are mindless sheep. Look at my gems for instance, and then look at yours. If you're going to bully people on the notion of how much they're worth on a stupid little counter on a website then you need a reality check.

Chronic bronchitis is the inflammation of the lungs, caused by the damage to cilia and the overproduction of mucus by goblet cells, because when mucus accumulates in the lungs bacteria can thrive and cause infections.
Emphysema normally comes after because phagocytes move to the area to fight the infection but they produce elastase enzymes that break down the elastin in alveolar walls, reducing surface area / preventing recoil. It's basically caused by the destruction of the alveolar walls whereas bronchitis is just the inflammation.
You don't have maths/science A levels, and you need these for both a geology/earth science degree and an environmental engineering degree. So either way the foundation degree is a good idea.
I would also recommend the geology/earth sciences route, but I am somewhat biased!

I think your last sentence is utter bull****. Misgivings and bad behaviour in the "white culture" doesn't mean we shouldn't also focus on that from other cultures, especially if someone does something in the name of their religion. I think that if someone does an act that is vile they should be reported on equally but you cannot ignore something like religious or cultural influence if such a thing is relevant.

Also, I'd love to know more about how you think family annihilation is related to feminism.

Its simple the traditional role for men is to be the head of their family, to have control of their life, to have control of their woman.

Feminism has promoted a society where women cheat and leave their husbands more regularly, further more the family courts have given women absolute power over children and the finances of former partners.

So simply your wife can cheat on you with another man, then take most of your wealth and your family. Your life can be destroyed by the promiscuity/infidelity of a woman. If a woman tried this with me I would kill her.

British men need to man up and take control of their women.

I'm filling out the DSA form. It's asking my university to fill out a part. What if I don't know which university I'm going to, or if it's quite far away?

The notes says that I should include a letter saying why I don't want to pass the form to the university. Should I just write a letter saying I'm not 100% sure which university I'm going to attend?

I was 18 when i went, was a great hol. Nightlife is brilliant but you can kinda choose what you want...like theres karaoke, nightclubs, more laid back pubs, pubs with live music or late bars with dj's etc...i found there was a fairly mixed croud irish, brits, spanish, scottish! During the day im not sure what your into but Siam waterpark is AMAZING! The slides are absolute madness!!! Was a great day out. We spent very little money too you get loads of deals on the strip for drinks etc and loads of cheap but nice places to eat! Its a really good option...a couple of my friends are going back for the summer in JUne to work, i cant go as have work here but i would definately go back!

So he needs to win 2 more out of Toronto, Cincinnati, Shanghai and Paris I believe if he is to tie that record.

Can probably rule out Cincinnati - he's not had any success there. Federer, Murray and Djokovic pretty much control those ultra fast courts. Toronto and Shanghai are probably his best bets. He's won Toronto before and reached the final in Shanghai - needs to watch out for Murray/Djokovic though

Yeah but it still doesn't sit well with me and it could be viewed as an integrated masters. I have the option of transferring into MEng Software Engineering - in which case I will have only one qualification, the MEng.

Hardly. As has been posted above, these ‘MAs’ are purely honorary, and serve as a nice way of meeting your friends again a few years after graduation. Almost all Oxbridge grads do not put it on their CVs, or try to pass it off as a ‘real’ master’s qualification in any way. And if a Master’s degree really matters to an employer, they will in most probability know the relative worth of these. It’s a completely harmless tradition.

Hi, I am 17 years old and have recently been considering nudism. 2 of my relatives are nudists. I was reading about it online and then there was a list of links about info and then when I pressed one of the links it took me to a website with nude pics.

What I found worrying was that these were family pics etc, so I think there were children in them. I immediately left the website. However now I've become really worried and can't sleep because I think they might track me and then I'll be arrested, it'll ruin my chanced at uni and I'll be put in prison. The website said it was legal in US and thousand of people vied the pics around EU. That's why I clicked it, I thought it was ok.
I know many people got jobs from being on reserve last year, i think I was just unlucky with the specialism! So keep your fingers crossed but maybe start thinking of other options incase? You did so well to get 5th reserve (I know that's no consolation as people kept telling me that last year!).

I agree. It shows that the players do care about the club- kinda like that wigan gk who was in tears the other night after being relegated.

Obviously finishing 4th and coming in the top two is different- and I'm unsure how we're going to approach next season- but the players have every right to celebrate as they did themselves proud for the last 30% of the season.

Also it's hilarious hearing some of the spuds comments. Their best team couldn't beat one of our worst, and yet they're giving it all that talk about how they have ambition. Even if they did have that, it wouldn't mean anything with their inferior revenues and custard cream stadium. Also bye bye Bale.

I support MPs having a universal pay rise, as opposed to a dubiously covert expenses system that was contrived in the first place to avoid the political fallout of raising MPs' pay. To balance, MPs' ability to claim second homes and expenses should be put under more scrutiny, with regulation becoming transparent to the public. This may actually help politics in the long run, because the more simplified the system becomes, the harder it will become to exploit, and the easier it will become for us to scrutinise.Hopefully this is step one in a rebalance that Westminister desperately needs.
Ok, few points I'd like to put forward for consideration here:
1) Older students have paid significant amounts into the tax system during their working lives. My already paid tax is helping to train the younger students as well as the older ones.
2) How do you measure someone's professional 'worth'?
3) Just because someone is 'training' doesn't mean they are contributing nothing to patients during that time. Certainly, once in F1/F2 doctors are making a significant contribution. None of us ever stops learning/training.
Posted from TSR Mobile

1) So you're suggesting admitting medical students based on how much tax they have paid in the past? As a kind of reward for paying tax? Because that is certainly not what happens now. There is no guarantee whatsoever that any given 50 year old has paid more tax than they've benefited from already.
2) Its difficult. One objective measure would be time though, which is exactly why i'm surprised that med schools are happy to take on someone with less than 10 years worth of career prospects.
3) Sure, but they are not worth as much as a trained consultant doing the same job. You will get some value out of a 10 year career, but much less than a 40 year career clearly, which is the point.
