Simply by thinking back to what it was at school that I really enjoyed, what I seem most interested in these days as far as spare time is concerned - you want to be working at something you'll enjoy, after all. Bits of work experience helped, too... and attempting to read about/study subjects I had thought about studying, then realising it wasn't for me. Some people might see that as time wasting, but for me, it was exactly what I needed.
