    I was trying to show them that by seeing if they would get that if they understood ho the signs worked. Thanks for the feedback though

    Just the fact you didn't mention "-2 < x or 3 > x" is not equivalent to "-2 < x < 3" which is kind of the root of the problem posed by the OP. Though the crocodile thing is useful (it helped me), as first poster omitting mentioning the error isn't that helpful.
