Haha when you say it like that it sounds so big-headed!! Yes, it has happened before, although I must stress that it was only really at the very end of my year abroad that I managed to get to such a level! My Spanish is still good but I've lost some fluidity and it's become more accented subsequently, it must be said - inevitable when living outside of the country. To answer your question though, I started studying Spanish at university when I was 18, and generally they don't prescribe a variety of the language to teach you, but my teachers have always been Mexican. But we didn't use just Mexican materials, but a mix of Spanish and Latin American. The year abroad is really your best shot at fluency and authenticity - but it really depends on the individual. Some people live and work in a country for years without acquiring a good accent.

I enjoyed your sig. That is all.

There are other ways to do it, as I personally have neither (well, my parents are generous with what they have, but they're not rich so I can't live off them and would probably feel too guilty even if I could), but had I known how hard it was going to be financially I would definitely have thought twice about it as living off bar work wages isn't easy.
I would say I'm very proficient but I haven't achieved native level fluency yet, my accent scares French children I'm really enjoying studying here, I love my course, my uni, my friends and of course the city itself
You're welcome, and good luck with the rest of college and UCAS stuff

Thought I'd write here so the thread doesn't go off topic I'm not an expert on applications for all foreign unis as I've only ever applied in the UK and France, but basically just apply directly to the university in question or use the country's centralised uni application system (like UCAS) if they have one. No government funding unfortunately, so unless you find a scholarship or your parents are very generous, financially it can be extremely difficult (tuition fees in France may be free, but rent is not ).

- Should you learn Mandarin? Yes, according to geetar:
(Original post by geetar)
When China and India have teamed up and royally dookied all over the West, an ability to speak Mandarin will enable you to get a job as an interpreter to our new overlords, rather than forced to do hard labour in a diamond mine on the moon, which is what will happen to the rest of us.
It is never too late to be what you might have been.
