Yeah found out about a month ago that I was unsuccessful. They took 10 off the waitlist possibly out of over 1000, so can't feel too hard done by I guess. I think it'll be Durham in October

I just found out I've been waitlisted by Harvard, so they can't just look at SAT scores. I'm far from an expert myself, but from what I have read, they look for an interest across a variety of subjects, although a passion in a particular subject won't hurt you (my admissions essay was ALL about maths), and your extra-curricular activities are a HUGE part of admissions. They want to know if you'll fit the mould of the students they want at their college. Aside from that, it helps to get lucky

yeah, unfortunately didn't get into MIT, still waiting on Harvard...though kinda lost faith. My SATs are pretty poor.

Even if you're not 100%, I'd recommend you like apply now and get your application filled out and sent off, cos the good placements are gonna run out pretty quickly. Then if you get any job offers from firms, you can make your decision then.

Oh actually, have you considered doing the Year in Industry programme? It pays reasonably well and is absolutely amazing to put on your CV. I was gonna do one myself but decided not to cos of the tuition fee rises (among other reasons...), but if you're taking a gap year, I'd strongly advise going on YiNi.
