    You can use clamwin to scan if you really want. All the other things are possible as well. You may like to check out virtualbox also. And yes NTFS is compatible,

    Re: the antivirus, I know Linux is secure, like OS X.. but as I'll be passing files around and stuff I still need to be able to scan the files and make sure they're all safe

    All those things are possible. Just ask for help if you need. Also the antivirus stuff is not needed as Linux is secure by design.

    That is indeed a good strategy. You can do a dual boot of Windows and Ubuntu on the same computer actually. Have a look here . Experiment with the livecd. The next version of Ubuntu and variants comes out on the 17th, so do try it out. There are always people there on #ubuntu and #kubuntu channels on freenode chat. Its the best way to get help.

    Anyways incase you want a peep. Out Kubuntu 11.10 release should look like this
