  1. Hi mate, I've spotted that you're willing to give advice to Oxford applications for the HAT test. I was wondering on what questions you are permitted/supposed to include quotes from the extracts? Question 1C for example, I'm not sure of whether you're required to include any, as it's asking for your own historical example.

    Thanks a lot in advance,

    Simon

Mansfield is a small but beautifully formed college, situated in a quiet road (Mansfield Road!) a few hundred yards from the city centre. It's not old by Oxford standards; it was built in the 1880s. But it has the same honey-bricked look and feel that most people expect of an Oxford College. I mean, it's basically a castle.

Everyone is very friendly here, tutors and students, so interviews aren't too intimidating. We have the highest proportion of state school students of any Oxford College, so there is a wide range of backgrounds and accents. Our Principal, Baroness Helena Kennedy, is pretty famous, so we get some really interesting high profile speaker events.

I'm reading History here, in my final year.

Let me know if I can be of further help.

    Best Wishes

    Martin

  3. Oh, there is a virtual tour? No, I have not visited/seen the college at all yet!

How was your interview there? Were the tutors nice? ..

What is your major there?: ).

Thank you very much 'Shoshin'! . .
  4. Hi there! Sorry to bother you, but I understand that you are at Mansfield college in Oxford, which is the very college that I am applying to, for PPE!

I was wondering if you could tell me more about the college itself, and what you like/dislike about it?
Any advice and tips you could give me about applying would be very much appreciated as well.

Thank you very much in advance!

    Selina.
  5. In that case then, the 2008 paper really must have been the worst I could imagine.
  6. That was a lot of help! Thank you. Definitely agree about imagination in Q2. I haven't actually looked at the 2010 HAT, but is that the one with the question 1c about "political ideas"? I glanced at that once and wanted to cry. I'm mostly a medieval/early modern historian so most things modern I find difficult.
  7. Hello there, I read your post in the Ox. Hist. thread. It was really useful.
Do you have any more advice? I'm really stressing out about this exam; I just fear that it's going to let me down
  8. oops my bad! sometimes find it difficult to keep track of whos who on here! Yes, I saw that. Pretty pleased with the changes; as a post-A2 applicant, I fear I may be slightly rusty (despite my attempts to alleviate said rustiness) on deploying school topics for the essay so any weighting shift towards q2 is welcome in my book.
I had a crack at a paper yesterday and used a topic I've been reading about for my 'topic with which you are familiar'. I've never been taught specifically on the topic, so do you think its dangerous to use as a basis for q1c? Should I stick to stuff I've actually received teaching on?
How's the infamous work load treating you?
  9. Hi! How is everything going? Sent my UCAS form off last week and I find out which college I'm given on 22/10 (I opted for an Open Application!). How is HAT preparation going?

Good stuff. Well I'm also looking at applying for the History of Medicine Master's programme so I guess that might be one of your areas of expertise? I'm keen to get into Cambridge postgrad medicine but obviously need to work on academics which isn't an impossible task. Nobody said it would be easy! I have looked into having some science essay papers published which I scored full marks on for special study units at university. Perhaps that could go some way to proving myself academically and passionate for Medicine?

I'll apply to Exeter for the Contemporary India MSc, wouldn't mind Linacre though because if I did get an offer, Linacre is the sister college of Hughes Hall at Cambridge which is the college I want to apply to for Graduate Medicine. Not sure if that would help.
